I give Eli Roth props for at least trying to do something different because we know what we're in for. He's campy and fun which i appreciate.
This movie sounds more like a horror movie about Black Friday than thanksgiving because people involved in a black Friday riot are being killed. So it shouldve been called Black Friday: Bloody Revenge 😊

The Trampoline Kill is an homage to Roth's fake Thanksgiving trailer he made for Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse in 2007. That's why it feels out of place because it is more of an Easter egg for those who watched Grindhouse. The movie is based on that fake trailer. Great review as always.
I remember watching that back when I was 18 and that trampoline fake preview still hurts my crotch, just the whole thing where she's about to jump right on the knife has been forever burned into my mind every time I see a trampoline

This reminded me of the 1981 movie Happy Birthday To Me with Melissa Sue Anderson. The dead bodies sitting at the table at the end was spot on.
Correct Eli Roth cited it as an influence on the Video Archives podcast with Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary. They discussed Happy Birthday To Me on an American Giallo two part episode.
The second they named who the cast was prior to filming, I placed my bets on Patrick Dempsey being the killer 😂

I just don’t understand how the Sheriff was at two places at once. He was outside talking to a fellow cop but also inside the school kidnapping the jock and his girlfriend and then he was at the parade in uniform and then walking in the parade in a clown costume? 🤔
It was a poorly written and executed movie. There was no logic or consistency. You just had to accept things as fact because the scene said so. It's fucking lazy as hell.

Everyone was praising Addison Rae’s performance and Joseph says “the girl who has nothing to do but be pretty” 🤣🤣🤣
I thought she did a pretty good lines. She said her lines naturally without all the woodiness. I saw clips of her in another movie, and she definitely did better here than in that one. And she was the main character in the that one.
Some clarification on the reason why Patrick Dempsey was all bloody next to the cop car (spoilers). He had abducted Bobby and threw him in the back of his cop car. He opened the trunk to dress him in the killer’s clothes to frame him, but he woke up and hit him with a tire iron. And that’s right before Jessica finds him.
His character clearly spells that out…. Some people just don’t pay attention
I really liked this movie. I thought that Gina Gershon was gonna be the killer. I WOULD have been disappointed, but when Patrick Dempsey was like, “She was carrying my child!” I had to repress a cackle and I forgave it right away.
Gina G is suppose to get knocked up at 61?!?!? Um, 20 years ago would’ve been, like, a stretch biologically speaking.

And that two young couple who announces that the store is open even though it wasnt yet. And people ramming in the store that causes stampede.

I definitely agree that the Black Friday riot was the most effective moment in the movie. Other than that, a few of the jokes made me chuckle. Shes been cooking all day, lol!

Loved it. A clear homage to the slashers of the 80s, in particular and quite clearly My Bloody Valentine and The Prowler! Eli Roth brought the camp and gore he grew up watching, he’s truly a fan of the genre.
I liked how they poked fun at “influencers” who like to all real deep and caring, but only get attention cause they are hot…. The essay scene with the guy showing his abs….
This was more of a 90’s homage, the original trailer was more 70’s/80’s

The fact that I got excited thinking we were actually getting the original product that was teased in the 2007 mock trailer, I was thinking that is quite ballsy considering the kills shown in that trailer would not fly in the sensitive social climate today. I wanted to see Michael bein as a sheriff on discovering the fluid leaking out of the turkey mascot was blood looking deadpan and saying "you sonofbitch". Or all the decapitated kills in the woods. And the girl on the trampoline landing in full splits on the butcher knife. Not to mention the human that is manipulated and trussed like a turkey and on the table under a huge tablecloth. Sadly this is not the same film.
I just got back from seeing this, I thought it was pretty cool, the ending is a little wonky but over all it was fun!

I was so disappointed in this. This should have been over the top ridiculous fun. It started out that way but instead it became a paint by numbers, playing it safe borefest. I was taken out when they cowered out and didn't do the trampoline scene the way it was in the original trailer ha
YES. I wanted over-the-top, extreme, SUPER fun, and VERY well written. Dude has written close to a dozen films and he shits this garbage out? So embarrassing but I guess reviews from people who think Netflix's original Chainsaw Massacre was a "great film" liked it??

My read was the blunt force trauma of the cart hitting her head killed her; the scalping was just extra pain and trauma.
I loved that this movie let/made us spend time with all our key players before people started dying.
The killer was so obvious but I thought the new bf was the second killer.

Yeah you miss a lot of little details the group passing talks about that guy who looks too old to be a teenager, failed twice and was dating a cheerleader…also there are soooo many Easter eggs for the new look in the sequel.
Omg the Christopher Pike name drop is so accurate. Idk if you guys have ever read Chain Letter this movie sort of reminds me of that.

Glad you guys are reviewing something popular, but I feel that you should expand on that. Art house films are great (thanks Nick), but we would really also like to see more mainstream movies reviewed like the David Fincher's movie The Killer.
Thought it was ok ish … actually thought he should have edited it more in the grind house style or the original trailer from Tarantino and Rodriguez grind house features. Of course Eli Roth directed that spoof trailer

I enjoyed this movie as a fun body count, but as someone else mentioned a pregent Gina Gershon is a bit much. Like there aint no eggs left in that basket!

Wait you are smiling on a slasher. I must pause and come back *AFTER* seeing. *back* (a) Any -sales- stores starting on Thanksgiving Day, Let folks have the DAY!! I am empathetic to the slasher. I was always like one step too far. (b) IT was not lost on me that the man (Party-Marty Gun Dealer) gave a *high school kid* a Sig Sauer the weapon of choice for Crumbley, if I recall. It saddens me to recall that detail ....(c) Act III parade scene switcheroo was a breath of fresh air for horror loyalists 😮 (d) That's the oven from Tales from The Darkside, ..always wondered what they did with that ol' witch's oven, lol👩🍳

I thought Dempsey was convincing as the killer but it doesn't make up for the fact that his character was poorly developed up until the climax. Part of the fun of these movies is trying to establish the killer's motive but how can you do that if important information is withheld up to the very end? I suppose some people would have guessed that it was him just by virtue of him being one of the few recognizable names in a cast of mostly unknowns. (Spoilers for Scream 6) It's similarly underwhelming for those who have just seen Scream 6.
The film was still mostly fun. The kills were appropriately gory and the stalking scenes were suspenseful. I did prefer the trampoline kill in the trailer. The one featured in this movie did feel pointless and was my least favorite kill in the movie. The parade kill where the guy's face got impaled was the most fun while Evan's head getting repeatedly smashed in at the dinner table was the most shocking.
All in all, I think the film works best as a one and done slasher however I wouldn't mind if Eli Roth took a stab at another holiday. With a little more humor and some more interesting characters, I think it could be even more fun.
How was the trampoline scene pointless in the movie? The killer was targeting her (Amy) from the riot along with her boyfriend (Lonnie) due to their involvement. Unless you didn’t realize she was the one with the pink jacket in the riot scene that was part of the group that smashed through the fence caused by her boyfriend. The trampoline scene was a direct hit on her and the boyfriend.
@@user-ls7fo1fb8y I meant the scene felt overly contrived for the payoff we ended up getting. I can understand why it's in the movie given the notoriety of the original Grindhouse trailer, but by not including the part where she lands on her you know what, it's missing the thing that made it so memorable in the first place. It's also one of the few kills that is entirely CGI.
All the characters were poorly developed. The story was poorly developed. It was trash.
I wouldn't call it pointless but the single stupidest kill scene I've scene in a decade? Yes. The reason? It was a moment that was completely force and setup for the kill. The writer was so fucking lazy he couldn't come up with a plausible set up for why the girl would be on the trampoline so came up with the most contrived "seduction" scene. It was actually cringey. I thought Gina's kill should have been more too. Like something wild I totally agree. Maybe she had a heart attack too idk. Also the dumpster thing.

Yeah, as usual they're not great. They go in and out, with the characters that even are attempting it, that is. Most of the main characters don't even bother.

I was disappointed that the final girl was Jessica. She was the most "ugh" character to me (flat acting). It would have been better if Bobby was framed, exonerated in the third act via the cell phone live steam, then cleverly dispatched The Sheriff with some Thanksgiving themed implement.
Not a fan of gore… but the film sounds fun… I bet it does bank .

I just finished watching the film. I would have liked it more if it was done as a traditional murder mystery. There was enough substance to the story for that. But I am sure that there will be a Thanksgiving 2; however I won’t be watching.
So Gina gershams death wasn’t the slight scalping she was already dying from hitting her head and that security guard is the hugely successful Tim Dillon (Dillon was my reason to watch) it’s based on a fake trailer from years back. I stopped watching after a few minutes as I didn’t want anymore spoilers before watching the movie. It’s actually better than any scream movie 🍿

That’s just failed creativity when you can create real deaths, it just takes longer than 5 mins to think of.
It’s funny it seems like you didn’t watch the movie lol The killings weren’t random the cheerleader and that guy were together when he stole the microphone from the sheriff and started the riot by saying the store is open and that’s what kicked everything off… waitress was the one who rammed her cart on the chicks head over and over all the killings had a purpose the kid who got his head smashed in got killed because he posted that video that went viral.

I saw the film and didn’t much enjoy it. A lot of the kills looked so papier-mâché fake. Everyone’s running around cursing in New England accents is supposed to be funny?
I guess kids will like it but idk scream had a bit more tension

I had a hard time believing the killer was the killer because he was too old to be that knowledgeable about technology. It should have been set in a college not high school.
I didn't like the ending of the movie because it seemed a bit extra maybe they want to make a sequel amdbj just wanted a peaceful ended after all that killing.

I thought the killer's motivation for targeting the friend group (especially Evan) was set up pretty clearly in the beginning.
The main jock Evan clearly taunts the outside crowd from inside the store. This is probably one of the reasons the mob got so riled up.
And then later Evan posts a video including footage from inside the store making light of the situation and actively mocking one of the people who died.
Like... that's some pretty important context to just gloss over
I don't know why they keep calling this a 'slasher' movie. It's exactly as I predicted...nobody will make traditional slashers anymore.
