The close up on Nick’s face when Joseph was talking about how other people would have “a box of wine, some edibles and some pills”, was gold.
I get it. When I hit that open storm drain on the highway, I was so upset thinking about all the crap I was going to have deal with the next day, that adorable 3 ounce pour was not going to cut it.
The facial expressions say it all, haha
The side eye and "hmm", 😄
Yes! Great editing! ❤
Hahahah that description was a bit toooo specific 😂😂☠️
“But if it’s a hit, it’s going to be a franchise now.”
LMAO Nick exactly knows how the business works
Joseph killed me at, "it made it seem like ground shipping". Y'all never fail to entertain and inform.
The stuggle between waiting to watch the movie or see your review first in case it’s not worth it.
I do both... I watch the review then the movie then the review again
Just watched. It’s really good
If I'm super excited for the film I'll watch it first..Flux Gourmet for example lol..if I'm meh on the film I'll watch u gais first XP ❤
Stupid movie. This proves that they are just running out of idea. Couldnt even come up with a ending....
DITTO
Thank you for a SPOILER review. Spoilers ruin nothing for me, and sometimes finding people willing to give them is difficult.
Loved the zooming in on Nick😂❤️. You two are a good time, I don’t care that it’s spoiled at all.
He’s so easy to agitate lol
Oh my gosh. Yes! Watch for the facial expressions alone.
😂😂😅
That shot where the body is on the table in the morgue and all you see is this big red ,what looks like a smile, but is where the girl slit her throat bleeding 🩸 through the starch white sheet
Great shot! 👌🏼👏🏼
I told my friend this movie felt like an It Follows/Ring mashup
Exactly! I liked Smile but can’t love it as I think it’s a tad overhyped when it wouldn’t be here without Ring/it follows. It’s one of the most derived horror films I’ve ever seen. Also taking from (don’t know of Truth or Dare counts) fallen, lights out, badabook, drag me to hell.
This reminds me a little of Fallen, with Denzel too! Especially the ending you described. Just a theory…that Rose had that tiny sip of wine because she has a fear of having the disease of addiction, like her mom. Her entire career could be an attempt to maintain control, as opposed to the childhood she had. Maybe I’m just making up my own backstory! 😅
I was thinking more like it follows
@@marlenestewart9112 yup! Also truth or dare
Thanks guys, most of your reviews help me to determine if I'm going to theaters to watch a movie, waiting to watch at home for free, or passing on watching the movie.
Something missed is everyone who died at the hand of the entity, they already had first hand experience with trauma when they were younger, not just Rose (both grad student and prof saw loved ones die). The line "your mind is so inviting" is a nod to their weakened minds and how the suicide they witness in their adult years at the hands of the demon compounds their trauma, they are not as equipped to handle it, as say a normally developed adult who has an advantage in processing things without having PTSD triggered. Another thing is, Rose and us go through most of the movie thinking of the entity as am external presence that is coming for her, rather than at the end where it masquerades as Joel and tells her it will always be with her, and it's in her mind, you come to fully realize it was never external, always internal, and ready to kill her whenever it felt like. The scene of it entering her at the end wasn't actually depicting it entering, more like it was taking control where it had already been lurking.
Well said
Interesting theory. I still think it's an outside thing thou, till to the point it crawled into her. Something similar happened with her patient. She starts choking and after Rose calling for help she just stands there and she reacts the same way too, like something coming towards her. You even can hear the entity going in on the recording, assuming it's real. Only watched it once thou, finished 5 minutes ago so might be wrong 😌
@@RainisaurusRox It’s both.
It starts messing with their head (interior) after each victim witnesses the suicide, and then it enters each victim (exterior) right before it destroys them mentally - when it takes over their body - and then physically - when it forces them to commit suicide.
As Rose says, “maybe it’s not suicide [explanation of how grad student was not suicidal and terrified (she didn’t want to die)] and then at the end, everything about her changed. It was like the person I’d been talking to was gone.”
The evil entity wears the victim’s husk and forces their mouth into a smile, which is why it’s a Duchenne smile plus the evil glimmer;
it’s feeding off the eye witness’s trauma.
There’s a lot of parallel and mirror shots (two of Rose in front of a mirror, the side shot of her talking to the imprisoned accountant, and it symbolizes a lot of things (the private, vulnerable self/ the public, masking self, etc.) but one thing I think of is how before the entity jumps from one person to the next, two traumatized people face each other, psychological twins, and then one further traumatizes the other. Traumatized people traumatize people, without meaning to sometimes.
Sometimes Kevin Kleppy made them do it! (He was CREEPY af in this movie. So glad they didn’t go CGI with the demon.)
I never jump at scary movies but this one had me almost fly out of my seat
Only way you can’t jump is if you don’t predict the jump scares. So jump scares must’ve been predictable for you somehow in past movies
You probably skipped the trailer which spoiled many scares
@Akbar Karimi lmao no
Yeah, gotta agree with Nick. It was a good horror film in a sense of how we view and handle mental health, the ending was depressing all by itself.
Yah. The mental health subject was this movies BEST asset. But everything else is derived from many other successful horror films that Smiles owes credit to. It even took a specific scare out of it follows
The zoom in at 8:16 is the best work of shade I’ve seen 😂. ❤ you guys!
I honestly didn't expect this to be THAT good so I'm on board now. Thanks guys as usual.
After the lil disagreement in the “Blonde” review, it’s a relief to see our parents back to agreeing 💕.
I enjoyed this one. A movie doesn’t always need to be original if it makes me care about the characters, which this does.
You both mentioned a ton of other good horror films during the review. “The Empty Man” was criminally ignored when it was released 😔
Oh! Great editing👍👍
Yes original doesn’t really matter when it comes to how it will affect the viewer personally, but it’s MORE of it affecting how the film or franchise will hold up in the future generations
Just came across you guys’ channel and I love the review ! You guys seem to be super soft spoken, respectful, but still be realistic to the film’s flaws. No loud edits, no over dramatic sound effects. Will come back for future reviews !
I swear, since I started watching your videos, I may never enter a theater for a long time because your vids are so entertaining that I can't imagine having a better time in the Cinema 😂😂😂
The zoom in on Nic at the "crack open a box of wine comment" LAWL. Joseph ur so shady
Great review as always.
I just wanted to say that I usually binge listen to your reviews every week, while working (I work from home)
And I actually listen/watch your reviews first before watching the movie.
Thank you for always taking the time to break down these films.
I really love the long reviews 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Even though rose received the entity through the trauma of her patient she also had trauma from her mother. But if you listen carefully it seems like every single person was already dealing with a previous trauma before they saw the person commit suicide in front of them that passed on the entity. The grad student saw her grandfather die. I wonder if that plays into how the entity says that her mind is so inviting. It seems as though it decides to kill itself in front of those who are already dealing with trauma so that this will push them over the edge.
There's absolutely no trigger warnings on the film itself, and both me and my friend who I went to see it with, experienced a visceral reaction to the overall trauma themes of Smile. In an empty theater, just a movie showing a breakdown with steps you've seen yourself take and almost go down, with no positive ending. If you're anyone who has experienced self-destructive thoughts or past actions, the portrayal of her striking out and scaring away all of her loved ones; that's what's still scaring us way more than any of the jumpscares
(。ŏ﹏ŏ)
Not to mention surprise punches in the gut of stress, paranoia, denial of help, minor self harm (she nervously bites her cuticles and it was too visceral sitting there without expecting it), isolation, plus the dude figures out the secrets of the movie for us, with 0 payout on that :^/
See, I forgot the spoiler already. Thank you for everything you do. Listen to their podcast!
A poor memory is not always a bad thing lol
I live for how Nick says every title of a movie 🍿 😂
then joseph's eyes LMAO
Joseph!!! Yes! Kal Penn is gay 😂 it's funny how that thought also crossed my mind when I saw him in this movie
Hey i really like the style of review you guys give & the fact your actual critical horror fans wit respectable opinions & even actual notes i just subscribed & will be watching way more regularly so keep up the good work & hopefully reading this comment inspired you guys to keep going!
First time viewer of your channel. You guys do a great job. So nice to hear a review without F bombs strewn throughout. Subbed 😎👍🏼
I don’t agree with the part about the cat. That was the most intense scene for me!!! To the point I bursted in tears
Me too
It was so realistic
Omg the babadook, a master class on diminished returns. By the 5 minute mark after the kid starts to scream....by the end I wanted to crawl into the story like sumara from the ring and end that character. Screaming for no reason throughout the entire run time. Movies are a suspension from reality not a curbstomp to your nervous system. Great review as always
Thank You guys for your honest reviews on movies. There’s been a few I disagree on but it’s nice that you guys present a clear reason of why that is which I find myself going, yeah I get that.
I JUST LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH! thank you !
you are both excellent reviewers, I'm so happy you discovered your combined talent and started making youtube videos !!!...and you have so many descriptive details on films A++++
You guys are both very very good at verbalizing the details of the film. Very helpful in understanding. Good job fellas 👍🏼
Not ground shipping 😩 it’s also the Zoom ins! A Smile would have REALLY sent me 😂😂😂 I’m def gonna see this
It felt like It Follows needs The Ring. Really enjoyed this movie. I loved the non-stop dread felt from beginning to end.
Something I really enjoyed was the marketing for this movie, could have been more of a worldwide thing though
All I could think while watching this was that compilation of Jamie Lee Curtis saying “trauma”
I've seen this in multiple videos now and you've got the comedic zoom DOWN haha
omg I just discovered you guys and I love your dynamic. subscribed in the first 5 min
This might be the first film in years that could possibly scare me. LOL. I used to have a repeat nightmare as a child about everyone smiling at me all creepy like and chasing me, so it looks particularly sinister to me. You guys crack my shit UP! When Joseph talked about cracking open a box of wine and edibles and pills, the look on Nick's face was priceless! LOL And yes Joseph, Kal Penn is gay. LOL
I took psychology a while ago and I learned that repeat nightmares are called night terrors and it only happens to children. I had a reoccurring night terror that took place in the basement of my now childhood home. Kept having the SAME darn dream to a point I was afraid to sleep. These pair of small brown legs (shaped as a toilet seat) with hair in between them…wobbled as it walked and had a weird walking noise . Had NO eyes but could somehow see me and would chase me. Sometimes my dream would start with me already in the basement and I could hear it coming down the stairs. Sad I remember this.
I had some nightmares as a kid too that triggered me when I saw this movie. I would see a man staring at me with a demonic smile and I would be frozen in terror. This made to movie so much horrifying to me
@@lessismore8533 You must be right, because I've never had a repeat nightmare as an adult.
It reminded me of It Follows. Great review!
Wow - I had no idea - saw it advertised and thought just a slasher for Halloween (which has a place in the genre I just wasn't in the mood) this sounds like it has some depth and amazing visuals. I am going to check this out. Thanks for the review :)
The theaters in my city are closed cause of the hurricane over here in Florida so I can't watch this yet. I'll definitely check this out soon.
Stay safe!
That party scene had me Screaming 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Eeee this movie actually got under my skin, which is pretty rare. Glad yall enjoyed it too.
I had the same thoughts in comparison to The Babadook, and that the mother trauma/grad student trauma aren't really related in the storyline. For me, this made the entire "face the monster" sequence a distraction. As good of a movie as Smile is, it could have been far better if the director had picked whether this was a movie about Rose's personal trauma, or if this was a movie about a monster-curse-chain mechanism. I would prefer the former, as the opening scene and Sosie Bacon's performance align so well with it.
Exactly
I saw a good review of this so I went to see it in the theater even though I was on the fence (plus that crazy jumpscare in the trailer where the sister's head swings upside down 😳). Completely agree that the cinematography and sounds design were great. A lot of tension and the ending was a lot (and not where I thought it was going). Kinda wish I waited to rent it but I took my niece and we had fun 😁
This movie felt like a remake of "It Follows."
EXACTLY! I liked Smile but can’t love it as I think it’s a tad overhyped when it wouldn’t be here without Ring/it follows. It’s one of the most derived horror films I’ve ever seen. Also taking from (don’t know of Truth or Dare counts) fallen, lights out, badabook, drag me to hell
Great review gents!!
My question: Did Rose actually kill Mustache? My friend thought the spirit did it (while inhabiting someone else?).
Thank you so much for this review I saw this in the theatre and I missed out on so many little details because there was an obnoxious group of teen boys yelling out jokes over the entire movie
Same. Always annoying
I stopped watching a minute in so I could go watch it and come back and watch your review. I’ve seen the trailer but I wasn’t sure if it looked good enough to go to the theater but since you two liked it I’m definitely going to see it! I’ll be back
Okay I watched this movie last night. And HOLY SHIT I can’t believe how much I liked it! It was creepy, not corny at all, like you guys said it was very smart and I loved the commentary about therapy and how mental health is treated with this sort of patronizing arrogance. The end SHOOK ME. They really had me thinking a horror film was about to have a good satisfying ending and no. I was right there with rose baffled that she was still at the same house 🥲 amazing. When it comes out on streaming I’m definitely rewatching.
Just watched this tonight and just found you guys will be watching more of your videos you guys are too funny! ❤
I thought I was already subscribed to this channel. Kickin myself 😩
The wine commentary 😩😹
I just watch it so I could see your review! love two!
Are y’all together? Not trying to be disrespectful but you guys have an amazing chemistry and I am glad to have found you both after this review after seeing smile… Not that it really matters because you guys have a whole bunch, but you got a like and subscribe for me today…I wish you both a healthy and prosperous career, have a wonderful rest of y’all’s day/Evening, and don’t forget to smile :)))
Really had fun with this one. The only scene that felt unfinished to me was when her therapist gets all smiley and comes for her. That scene just cut off mid attack, and we never see how it resolved. They just cut to the next scene where Rose is just fine. The edit just seemed lazy and unfinished. Nice review, guys.
Yah I agree
Agreed, it seemed way too abrupt. It felt like there was maybe something cut there? It was weird.
The trailer intrigued me, but I don't do horror, As always thamks for the amazing review!
Thx 🖤:)! I had y’all’s review to watch after I viewed the film. To me, the demon reminded me of Annabelle Creation’s tall demon. Good movie tho
One funny detail, when she's in the hospital, we can see Rose has a smiley face mug 😅
Thank you for reviewing this. I love The Ring and the trailer for this movie made me think about that movie. I’ll probably see Smile now. BTW, Kal Penn is gay in real life.
Yes I’m a huge Ring fan myself! Samara is my fav horror villain
I haven’t laughed like this forever🤣 When Joseph edits Nick in frame discussing wine box drinkers!! Haha! You two are awesome and make my day! Ps - was Nick mad at you later Joseph?
Nick is always mad at me.
🤣
Let's go!! I don't mind spoilers if I'm interested, then I again I do mind spoilers if I'm interested😂🤦♂, anyways I loved It Follows, You're Next, and so many good horror, so I will be looking forward to this even w/spoilers.
Also, your review pretty much tells us it's not as original as the studio says. As you said it's kinda sound like the Ringu. Oh well still looking forward to it. Thank you both❤❤
Yup! I like Smile but don’t love it because I think it’s getting too much praise when it wouldn’t be here with It Follows and Ringu. So it’s annoying to me. It’s like how the youngest sibling in the family gets things the easiest just by using what they’re older siblings went through before them. Ugh! It’s like an unfair advantage
I have a list of movies to watch because of you guys 👍🏾
great review, I think for sure this movie is going to have a sequel..
I’m so glad you brought up her pouring the wine bc that bothered me 😂😂😂😂😂
I can’t tell you how many movies you saved me from seeing with the thorough efficiency of these reviews. I can’t believe the studios let you guys do this. 😂
"...And there's an interesting scene with a cat in a birthday party..." Lolz, such an innocuous line. Great review of the film!
Ok, so I’m in the middle of watching Fallen cause Nick mentioned it. I’ve known about it, but never bothered to watch it cause it didn’t get very good reviews. So far I’m entertained. I love me some Denzel and John Goodman. But when you get Donald Sutherland in what seems like a really peripheral role- you just know he’s gonna have a major role to play in the big finale. And the weird pov color changes, dramatic music and camera angles. So cliche now. But, I’m still havin’ fun! Thanks for reminding me.
it’s seems too scary. i still have flashbacks from the movie split released in 2016. these psychological horrors are too much for me. 😳 at least in split her traumas saved her…
LOVED FALLEN!!! Wouldn’t that be interesting for Denzel to revisit?!!!
8:20 DAY FREAKIN MADE
UGH I LOVE IT
10:30 Nick knows everything
Whwhat do you do mean you don't know his sexual orientation?!?!
Truth or Dare + The Ring = 😃 Smile.
That's what I was thinking, it reminded me of Truth or Dare. They had that smile theme too.
Also It Follows. One of the few criticisms I gave for Smile. Too derivative
“Ground shipping…”
😂
I was hesitant to see that movie, I thought it would be stupid, but after seeing you to two so enthusiastic at the beginning of the review, I stopped the video and went to see the movie. I enjoyed it, and only then I watched your review, which I always enjoy as much as the film itself
Finally got around to seeing this and always have to come here after I watch a new film to see what you guys think! I LOVE this film, might be my favorite horror movie of the year. Take care :)...ok I wrote this as I was watching. How you going to do Nick like that?! LOL
Oh, I had to stop watching after you both said it's pretty good. Will have to check this out first!
The whole smiling thing had me thinking it would be like that Truth or Dare movie from a few years ago (& that was rough).
I watched this movie at night and it was scarring me so I came to watch this video so I could laugh and go to sleep.
I’m so excited to watch this one!
I went to see this movie today - I really got scared! I give it a 7 out of 10. I thought it was very good and unique.
Really jazzed to see I was not the only one getting Fallen vibes from this film.
Looking forward to this with the wife on Sunday to kick off Halloween month. I figured it would have a downer ending… that’s actually become cliche…it’s expected. Fun review…
nice that you mention it the Movie Fallen
I’m so glad they mentioned empty man. That movie is scary! Anything involving cults creeps me out
Hi girls! I have recently discovered your channel and ADORE your takes on horror films. I wonder if you'd consider doing some "spoiler free" reviews for those of us who've not watched certain titles? Lord knows there are so many to watch and I like to cull my watch list based on critics I trust!
You guys are great
I really enjoy all your reviews but....8:14 in.....dying....thank you for being you
I also noticed the wine pours it annoyed me so much
Visuals were good. Audio was definitely added to the disturbed feeling. Ending really sucked we were rooting for Joel to survive!
Good review!
so “The Happening “ & “The Ring” w/ a weird smile emoji?
The first half hour was a bit scary and I was interested but by 55 minutes I gave up on it. I was so bored by then. The problem is this isn't a full length movie. It's a short story. It's painfully dragged out and I ended up not caring what happened in it. Basically it's a sort of 25 minutes Ghost Story for Christmas type thing. That's it.
@Fish Jelly Movie Review thank you for reviewing this before I made any decision too see it. Bc I WANT it to be BAD bc scary smiles are trauma material for me. Just the right smile can just represent evil.
this movie scared the crap out of me! also I have long PTSD so it also hit a nerve and made me pretty sad for Rose.
I think a sequel could explore how the curse would work if the new witness was someone so dead inside that they’re not really capable of being traumatized by new experiences. Like someone who is either at the absolute edge of clinical depression and just too detached to even register new trauma or even someone who is naturally resistant to trauma like someone on the psychopath spectrum. Like that’s a question i genuinely have for the screenwriter-what does he envision happening if the new witness observes this horrific mutilation suicide and is just like not at all reactive? Might be a neat way to break the “wash, rinse, repeat” horror franchises usually follow.
Smile feels like an Italian horror movie esp. from the opening and the birthday party scene. I was totally ok with that. WHY does SMILE and BARBARIAN share so many of the exact same elements. I was hoping for more from Smile and not an almost (without giving any spoilers) copy of the last act of Barbarian. The "you know what" in both movies is almost identical. I'd love to hear your view on what I've brought up about this movie.
I think they should do a sequel to "Fallen" with the song "Never gonna give you up." by Rick Ashley.
Thanks!
Thank you!
I can honestly say I enjoyed the movie. I'm quite critical, and quickly pick up on small plot holes, and character development flaws, and I saw plenty in this movie, but not enough to trash it completely. The One thing I need to point out is how Clearly Gay the fiance was. It detracted only in the sence that it made it Funny to see him attempting to play it straight. Lol! 😏
But overall, a decent piece of storytelling.
The ending made me upset but maybe they wanted a part 2 😩
I thought that some scenes were a little too loud. Which scared me more than the movie. I did enjoy the movie though; it just made me extremely uncomfortable.
