Can't even explain to you the rage I feel when I ask someone what happens in a movie and they're reluctant to tell. They don't wana ruuuiiiin it.. I WANT TO KNOW! GIMME THE FUCKIN DETAILS! I literally Wikipedia every single movie I have a slight interest in and its as if I got a whole 2 hour movie handed to me in a nice little 5 min box lol. Buuttt I just found the channel, so I'm hoping it's as great as it seems so far.

I so get that, thats how i found this channel as well. watching a movie is like reading a book it's a big commitment and a significant amount of time your giving to something with TV it's different if your not hooked on an episode your not stuck watching the entire series to see if it gets better or resolves in a satisfying way. I think you can find out what happens and then still go watch a movie if your onboard for what it will be depicting, if a movie's success is dependant on keeping spoilers quiet, that means it's never going to stand the test of time.

I have to be honest, I didn't see the twist coming and it took me a while to fully get it even after the scene where the "General" talks on his cell phone. I personally loved this movie too and am glad not everyone's tearing it to shreds in their reviews. Yes, it's not perfect but I think it's strengths outweigh it's flaws

This film isn't amazing and it isn't perfect, but it doesn't deserve the
hate it's getting. I am so bored of jounalists and commentators
complaining that depictions of slavery are too violent and traumatic.
Amistad, 12 Years A Slave, Django Unchained, just to name a couple in
recent years, have recieved the same criticism. 'Pain and torture'? Yes,
that is what slavery was. I thought this film did a very good job of
juxtaposing modern, subtle racism and the visceral brutality of the
past. Yes the film suffers from some poor story choices, structure and
especially lacks input from more of the other 'slaves', but the hate it
has been receiving is ridiculous. I have seen this film panned by a
white man in the Atlantic and Roger Ebert, this proves the film's point
that black women and their narratives are invisible or conveniently
ignored as they are 'too violent/problematic'.

Isn't it quite amazing why critics have no problem with insulting as a matter of fact I think they couldn't wait to have the opportunity to strike down this movie they gave them an opportunity to actually perform some of the rituals that were actually in the movie they're more subtle but it's the same exact meaning

Let me begin by saying this was the best spoiler review ever! The complete flushing out of the story and all the undertones was spot on for me. I was going to watch it until I saw a bunch of reviews saying it wasn't good and it seemed noone liked it at all. Now I believe I would like to see it. A lot of people believe this is a horror movie and in that they see the little girl as a ghost. Then another reviewer said it was a time travel movie. I guess they didn't want to give it away but they were all wrong. I would of been mad if there was so sci-fi or ghosts because that's what I'm expecting. Now that you have both done such a fantastic explanation I can now watch it and understand what I am watching. I got popcorn and wine thinking ohh let me light candles I'm gonna get scared. After this review perhaps not. I need to prepare like I did for Precious. Thank you very much. BTW have u noticed almost all new movies n tv shows are exploring this topic? i.e. Lovecraft country. Just a thought, cause my dad hates to watch things like this, as Joseph mentioned in the beginning. It's a bit triggering for him. What a world 😔

But then I said to myself NO black people would kill me for some shit like this. Don't get me wrong the racists got fucked up in the end but still. It was going to be a tribute to wes craven and his style of horror. When I was writing it came off as gore porn So I just throw it out.

Janelle Monet is also very good in the movie Harriet, about Harriet Tubman. It's a very under-celebrated movie that is really worth seeing. It's much more than an historical reenactment, the characters are quite nuanced and complex. You see and feel the different psychological effects that slavery created. At the same time the history is very well researched and there is nothing to take you out of the feeling of being immersed in that time and those places.

Right! People keep asking for an explanation for what led up to the plantation when it’s sitting right in front of you:
It’s a bunch of people still holding onto “Old Glory” to its extreme form.
The one thing I would’ve changed is having her books be about the people who went missing and where are they - especially if these are influencers and leaders both young and old.
Second thing is to add the horror - you can add in “A Clockwork Orange” type of brainwashing which would’ve explained the lack of communication and organizing by the victims already at the plantation. Eden/Veronica could’ve still had flashbacks and distant memories, which would’ve sparked her escaping.
I would’ve also added a scene of the villains explaining or talking about how this place came about and their plans and whatnot.
The young lady played by Kiersey Clemons should’ve maybe like met Eden/Veronica before at one of her speaking engagements or maybe been portrayed as an upcoming young activist so we cared about her a bit more.
Lastly, I wish the ending was still the same, except she ran out into a viewing crowd to their astonishment. And I wish it was everybody - all the victims.

I just saw the movie and thought it was brilliant and was surprised by all the negative reviews. I What I found the most horrifying about the film was that the events depicted seemed so possible in our modern world given the current political climate and systemic racism that infects our culture like a cancer eating away at its soul.

The message I got from this film is simple to me: "They are watching you and if you do not keep quite they will come and get you and bring you back to the plantation. THE PLANTATION STILL EXIST, IT NEVER LEFT. " Just like today they are trying to keep us black people quite and not speak up about the truth or standing up for equality." Bottom line WAKE THE FUCK UP! This was a beautiful movie. In my opinion, WE should never be tired of slave movies; we need to be reminded so we don't slip up, because we are still in slavery. We need to understand we are being brainwash everyday. We are so distracted by entertainment and social media pages that we don't realized what's going on around us. IT WAS HARD TO WATCH! As hard it was to watch the first 15 minutes of the film, it needs to be told like this. SLAVERY WAS BRUTAL & PAINFUL.

Just subscribed, always hella awesome reviews! For the past 2 years this movie has been one of my top movies just because me personally I've been to some of these backwards f'd up Confederate State's here in the USA while I was in the military, and we all know what State's I'm talking about, there's still sooooooooo many hateful human beings that believe in that way of life / bullshit flag, that's why those States still encourage those racist events at those parks to happen still to this day, that's why I could hella see this movie happening 2day in real life. 5 out of 5 movie still for me

Though the endings are similar, I think this movie is better than The Village but I wish the trailer didn't have those silly CGI edits on some shots that didn't appear in the final film.

I actually enjoyed this movie. For me as a black woman, I was watching my worse nightmares on the big screen! I do want to urge everyone, in life I you must learn to form your own opinion especially, and particularly when it comes to art. "It is of and for this moment". And I agree. As far as the violence depicting slavery, it is what it is part of American history.

As I said when I first watched this movie, this is not a movie for or about our ancestors. There are many movies already made that seek to understand their experiences. This is a movie for and about us. There has never been a movie that delved into this subject in quite the same way. It was a needed contribution. I found the slavery scenes necessary to understand the brutality that could exist if those with enough hatred and money are given enough power. There could be a part of the world where this could actually happen to people. People who feel like the slaveholders do in Antebellum do exist. It is an excellent cautionary tale of what could happen if we fail to excise the hatred from our hearts and from our societies.

This has become my favorite movie review channel because I love spoilers, most of the time.
Subbed What the Flick?! for years before Young Turks cancelled the show, and now watch Breakfast All Day, the same critics' new show.
Anyway, as a conservative film lover really couldn't care less about a critic's politics.
Would just like to point out during slavery, the Republican party, created in 1854, was the abolitionist party.
    The slave owners were Democrats.
The GOP was hated in the South for 100 years for destroying the South in the civil war.
So no, being a modern conservative isn't some pro-slavery "we were on the wrong side 160 years ago" thing.

@rose d That's why I mentioned Nikki Haley & Tim Scott. The civil war started in South Carolina when they attacked federal Fort Sumter. Flash forward 140+ years, South Carolina elected an Indian Sikh Republican Governor & a black GOP Senator.

Possibly the worst film I’ve seen in years (besides Death in the Nile). The concept was fascinating but the execution was terrible. The decision to lean into rape and slavery porn for the first hour made it virtually unwatchable for me. God bless Janelle Monae for basically refusing to promote the film after a point-I saw her do an IG live one day before the release where she was basically like-I mean, this film isn’t for everyone, so yeah you don’t have to watch it. It’s okay if you don’t. LOL. Talk about an icon

Saw a virtual screening today and I missed so much. I kept looking at the clock and was like damn its 40 mins in and we're still on plantation, whats about to happen next....but yeah, when I saw the airplane ✈ then the hair gel and a few other things I knew this had to be modern times...and why was it such an emphasis for the slaves not to speak, we all know slaves spoke and sung but on this plantation they hum....all very different and tricky. I initially gave this a C+ but after ur review and the things I missed as well as the hidden messages ill give it a B. Left a lot to be desired and I wonder what more established producers and writers would have done with script.

I think they don't speak because in the real world they are famous/successful for their words. Writers, professors etc. It's also a good metaphor for the reality in which you and I live in which if we say what we feel we are told to be quiet or tone it down.
