Anyone planning on watching Eileen (2023)? What's your thoughts on 'literary' movies? Yay or nay?
Been on the fence on catching Eileen in theaters because of the mixed reviews, but u definitely swayed the decision! Especially after watching the Actors on Actors of Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt.
Re: literary movies, many film adaptations of literary works have had quite the heavy hand on creative liberties (many good, many bad). But recent adaptations like American Fiction (2023) and All of Us Strangers (2023) have revitalized my hope for better film adaptations!
other than the obvious differences, the film stayed pretty true to the book - especially in terms of the pace. my expectations might not have been met if i hadn't already read the book.
I haven't read the full book yet (just a lot of extracts for research) but I agree, from what I read it's pretty faithful, which is not hard to imagine since one of the screenwriters is the author and the other one is her husband haha! But even without reading the book, it has a lot of of "literary" qualities, which appeals to readers, but maybe less so to other types of audiences.
I loved this film, admiring the minimalism of the writing, the purity of the direction, the fantastic cinematography and the perfect acting.
...And the ending, which is a profound and cold ending with mixed feelings, and which, in so doing, makes us realise where the important part of the story lies.
The ending blew me away and informed hiw brilliant the novel had to be.

Interesting essay and take. I, like many found the movie disappointing, thanks solely to the ending. The movie was enjoyable up until the unexpected credits. The acting was great, I enjoyed the cinematography, going back to the 4:3 ratio was a breath of fresh air, the grain in the film along with the convincing setting honestly made me forget I was watching a movie from last year. However again, the ending felt indeed anticlimactic, the movie felt short, and not necessarily in a good "I enjoyed it so much that time flew by" kind of way, but rather in a "Where's the rest?" kind of way. It feels incomplete, like after a test screening the general consensus was "It was fine except for the last 15 minutes" and instead of reworking those last 15 minutes they just bumped the credits up and called it a day. Open endings are possible to pull off, however they are difficult to do so and Eileen doesn't make it unfortunately. Like a good show with a bad ending or last season like Game of Thrones, Lost, The Walking Dead and so on, a bad ending can negate the good, making all the good years or seasons feel like you wasted your time, and that is Eileen; an enjoyable 90ish minutes of cinema that don't go anywhere and ultimately feel wasted.

PERFECT REVIEW
I hadn't managed to see this and so I'm very curious. Is the way you are pronouncing Eileen the way it is pronounced in the film? Or is this your accent? I ask as an Eileen who pronounces is "Eye-Lean" and every other Irish woman I know with the name says it like that also. I'm hearing you say it as "uh-lean" but very quickly, almost Ellen but with an "uh" instead of 'el' starting. I did want to watch this, just didn't manage. Now I will definitely get it from the library to watch. Thanks!
Haha, yeah, I think it's commonly pronounced "Eye-lean" and that's how it's pronounced in the movie.The thing is, I once knew someone who pronounced it as "uh-lean" and it stuck (and I'm kinda dyslexic so I can mess up some pronunciation anyway, especially if I can't read how it's pronounced first lol). I assumed I knew how to pronounce it because of the person I knew, and only I realised it's pronounced differently when I was editing. I added a note in the video, but yeah, it's 'Eye-lean' in the movie (and everywhere else except for that person I knew, it seems 😅) I hope you enjoy the movie 🤗

It’s crazy that this video is even more stoopid than the movie itself, wasting time watching both it’s on me tho… “underappreciated brilliance”😭😭😭 still can’t believe this opinion.
