This movie gave very much Stepford Wives + Truman Show + Get Out. It was beautiful to look at the cinematography was awesome but the script sucked. They could've cut out a lot of those repeat scenes and added more substance and depth to the story and characters. The last act was all over the place and the end was hot garbage.
Between the moronic "spitgate" and" Flo" drama mixed with Style's girl-band following, I think this will be your highest viewed video yet. Well deserved.
Boy-band technically
It’s a bummer that Joseph didn’t watch this film. Would love to hear his notes
Exactly 💯
I really needed his take on this movie. Love nick but nothing beats Joseph’s sass and facial expressions
Yes agree and this really seems like a love/hate film by the reviews.
Ugh! So it’s literally ‘The Stepford Wives in The Village on The Thirteenth Floor’, just as it seemed it would be!
Great review as ever guys! 👍
It’s also a little bit Matrix
And Vanilla Sky
I really wish they would of done a quick flashback sequence showing what each woman left behind….I also think it was interesting that the black woman was the first “defector” of the project. They could of delved more into her storyline since black women have the reputation of being very independent and outspoken ( I’m a black woman)…. Overall , the pacing was very slow until the reveal. Only then is when I really started to become more interested in the plot….Plus Florence and Harry have zero chemistry. I wish Shia wasn’t such a creep, he would have been amazing.
yes to your first point!! i was waiting for a flashback to all of the women, i think it would’ve added a lot to that portion of the movie. sad that they didn’t do it
The first person to die in most Hollywood films is a black person. As soon as I saw her I knew it. Just did a countdown
“With Ursher?” I lost it 😭😭😭😭
Nick explaining the drama to Joseph is exactly how it went down when I explained it to my partner. 😂
I love the balance between you two between book/film smart nick and jo genuine personality . I can always expect a authentic review with a hint of personality or sarcasm.
I LOVE that you made a Strangers With Candy reference. I nearly fell out my seat when you said “hobo camp?” One of the most wrong, ridiculous, funniest shows I’ve ever seen. Jerri Blank is an American treasure.
I actually quite liked the movie. Had me scratching my head for a while in a good way. The only bit that made no sense was why Chris Pine’s character’s wife killed his at the end. Never saw a reason for it. Unless she’s was actually the creator of the world controlling him and she saw him as having failed.
She too was kidnapped......?
Right they didn't explain that and did the wives all remember? And did Alice escape was she able to get her life back. I hate movies like this. It's what makes me give it 1 star
I can't wait to hear you all's perspective on this one! The behind the scene drama has been crazy. To me, having not seen this yet, the movie premise is based on a community at an atomic test site with a force field above keeping them "safe" from nuclear fallout. Or, the whole thing is an early version of The Sims video game. We will see!
You're close on one of those guesses.
Both ideas are more interesting. 😆
Thanks everyone, Having seen it now, the "twist" was so underwhelming and unexplored. Nick eloquently explained this aspect.
@@lexis4490 Thank you for your encouraging comment. As a starving artist myself, I appreciate any and all feedback about my work. LOL
A way this movie could of been more interesting is the lead actress being accepting of entering this alternate role and feeling like she did need to leave her stressful life, instead of being forced to do it. I know I would of at least been interested, if someone told me you can leave in a neighborhood where you don't have to worry about anything, except making dinner and cleaning the house. That's when you could of seen her start regretting it because she gets bored or whatever, and instead of leaving, she was forced back by being brainwashed. The moment you forcer her into this world, it feels like every other move we seen of this similar concept.
I also wanted to know more about Gemma Chan's character. She seemed like she was orchestrating the world too, but she would of done it differently. I'm just assuming on that one.
Useless factoid: Dita Von Tease is naturally a blonde.
I’ve been a fan of the channel for 3 years now and I always chuckle at the intro when Joseph’s name is said and he does his iconic face expression.
I just really love you guys. Thanks for your review. I’ll wait until it streams. ❤
12 hours, I'm very excited to hear the review!
Really looking forward to this one 🙌
I've been looking forward to this review and I'm not disappointed. Well done, guys.
Yaaassssss! This is what I was looking / waiting for. Thank you! 😘
Ughhh me tooo
That picture alone says it all. 🥴😄
Another great review. Thank you!
I just went to see this pretty good review yall. It felt slow-moving they really dragged it out before we got in on the gag. I felt like the Nicole Kidman movie did a better job of letting the audience in on the gag sooner so you could analyze the characters better. The only part of your review I disagree with is your feelings on Harry Styles. He gave me more than what I was expecting of someone with not as much acting experience they had really great chemistry as a couple. I hated the ending and also, I couldn't tell if the wife of the Chris Pine character was the actual mastermind kind of like Glenn Close, or what was going on with that scene, it was way too vague. Thanks for reviewing!
Thanks for the quick recap of the drama lol 😂😂😂 the movie recap was great as always
I was waiting for y'all to do this one!! It's awesome Nick got to go to Venice ( even if it was work) 😀
Heard Pugh was in Venice at the time but didn’t show to the festival….ouch.
I have been waiting all day. I must know y'alls take! lol
The Matrix meets Stepford Wifes! Loved this movie. The beautiful cinematography, and ability to convey Alice's mental state by showing the walls actually closing in on her was so well done! There was subtle insights to convey mood and vibe. The music and 50s clothing, even the food and cocktails really set the tone. The scene at the dinner party between Alice and Frank was tense ...you can see Alice/Florence actually bristle and put on her game face when Frank said he expected more of a challenge from her. Florence was amazing and had a stand out performance. I will watch Everything she is in going forward. THIS was such a well crafted movie with very blatant insights into the wrongness of their situation with strong rules governing any action outside of the what's required of the community. I definitely see Frank/Chris's character framed after someone like Jordan Peterson with his 12 Rules For Life🤣😂🤣 Harry created a believable Jack! I was surprised and happy with his performance. Overall I enjoyed this film ...could there have been more character development for some of the support characters like Shelly and Margaret: Yes! Was their characters essential to the flow of the film: Not really, but it would have been nice🤣
Only a tiny bit late to watch! But yes I’ve been waiting to hear from you two about this!
I was waiting for this one!!!
First off you two are great. I look forward to listening to every new episode. Without having seen the movie and only trailers this seems like the comic book Hex Wives.
I don't plan on seeing this movie. I just love 💝 to hear you guys talk about anything!
Was not expecting a Strangers With Candy reference on today 🤣🤣
Omg I just saw this cannot wait for my Fish Jelly fix!
I’m counting down to your review!!! Is this really just a remake of The Stepford Wives or what? I haven’t seen the trailer but that’s what I’ve heard.
Florence Pugh never ceases to amaze. Thank you for the amazing review🎉
Oooooo! I can't wait to hear this review.
I feel like I have and haven't seen this film at the same time. Thank you for your review. :)
Great review❤
“Wanda vision sh!t” 🤣🤣🤣😂
One of the things I like about your work are the spoilers…I’m rather old…and I need to know if a movie is going to be worth my time… I almost always read the last chapter of a book in the book store before I buy the book… I’m not gonna spend all that time reading a book to be pissed off at the end…same with a movie…thank you for the spoiler service…I really need it….😁
100% agree. Movies have been so disappointing lately (years). So grateful for these two saving me hours of my life watching garbage.
Joseph had some real burns in this one 😄
Had to wait FOREVER for this review...
And it did not disappoint.
Very happy to learn the twist, since every other review I've read they didn't spoil it.
Don't think every town (especially not in the South) in the USA was segregated in the 50s.
One of my parents went to high school in the late 50s, early 60s with Richard Roundtree, Shaft, in New Rochelle, New York.
great review.
So looking forward to your thoughts! I read the script and I have... minimal... expectations but you never know!
Breezy how did you get a copy of the script?
@@marshallhughes4514 I searched for it
@@breezey1643 OK so my other question is after you read it how did you know you had the final script? I am assuming you read it before you saw the movie.
@@marshallhughes4514 I don't recall and have since deleted it. The main plot was trite and predictable, if it's changed for the better great, still is built on bad bones.
I never watched Booksmart and thought “wow I think that her sophomore film should be a dystopian film “so I’m going to watch your spoiler review instead of seeing it because I trust your opinions.
Speaking of M Knight!! There was a trailer to his new movie that hole we waited for this movie to start.
Will you be reviewing my policeman, the other Harry Styles movie ?
Definitely
I can see why there was so much cooked up drama around this movie: because the actual product was crap wrapped in a pretty package. I loved that the movie was filmed in Palm Springs but the story was just not that interesting. I also think Shia Labouf would have done better than Harry Styles but we know Harry got the role because he was porking the director. Love that you guys are fellow Strangers With Candy fans ❤
I said the exact thing after I watched the film about Bunny😂 Wanda vision shit
I don’t get how if you die you die irl. It’s a simulation so why do you die??
I can’t stay up until 11 for the premier!!😢
A funny reason why I figured out the twist is that I saw a trailer for the new Shyamalan movie, then I saw a trailer for this movie.
Seeing both trailers made me think: "Are they in the present? Is this 'The Village'?"
Thanks!
Thank you!
I was hoping you would review this.
What I couldn’t figure out is how was she going to be the doctor/breadwinner in the real world if she was stuck in a coma state? Where was their money coming from?
Jack tells Alice at the end that she gets to stay in the simulation all day while he has to leave the simulation and go to an actual job (why all the men leave to go to work in the sim) in order to afford staying in the simulation
strangers with candy!!!
Lol I knew it! Saving my money. Thanks guys 😅
....once again EXCELLENT REVIEW. I liked this film, but I agree that it could have been so much more and it lacked the originally that I hoped for....it could have been better, but Florence carried this film and made it worth seeing. "She's on some Wandavision shit"🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jus love the "wandavision sh!t"
Im currently at the movie in Imax at Alderwood AMC with the live stream q and a the theatre is only about 1/4th full. Im predicting its gonna be a flop.
Really? Mine was packed full of teenage girls. Do not underestimate the pulling power of Harry Styles. Lol.
@@edwinv196 It got to about half full yes there was many younger Females there.
i actually liked the film Sort of a far fetched spin on Stepford wives mixed with the Matrix and The Thirteenth floor.. The male cast was way to good looking for the plot twist. Id give it a 7 out of 10. Im so excited for the review.
I love Florence Pugh so I've been wanting to see this, then the drama happened and I wasn't sure. Now I wil definitely check it out!!
She was amazing as always in this. Absolutely carried the film.
I love you guys
I sat in an near empty cinema in London tonight to see Pugh but lost the will to be interested in this derivative story early on, less of a movie and more made for TV/streaming, Relieved when it finished and also felt bloated on the music score, I left thinking this was a lazy Truman Show rehash with some Matrix thrown in, resented the time I spent on this and travel time.
Can you review Glass Onion (if you’ve already seen it)
Great review as always, I appreciate the thoughts. Only thing I began to think about critically was the commentary questioning why any minority would want to participate. I think Franks vision didn’t have anything to do with the actual historical context of the 1950s, just the singular fact that women were more or less subjugated at that time. There was no hint that black people or minorities were to be second class citizens in this simulation. It was strictly based on catering to men who wished to control their female significant other. As we know, any person can have a desire to control their partner,
it’s not based on race or any other intrinsic quality. This was based on toxic male desires for control in an intimate relationship which we have seen represented on screen countless times. As controlling behavior is not limited to men, I think it would be more interesting for the story to be told in a different way, with the villains being women, especially with a female director. Would be more unique at least. Was still a cool movie imo, and very creepy. Florence Pugh killed her role as always.
So i keep hearing that Harry Styles is the low point of the movie. Completely outshined by Florence Pugh. U seem to have the same sentiments nick. This ones intriguing to me. I love weird sci fi thrillers. Do u think its worth the theater price or it can wait for a rental? Side note, my 16 year old daughter is a huge Harry Styles fan so I guess ill b paying for a movie ticket whether i c it in the theater or not lol
A little warning. The movie deserves its R rating. And it’s all due to Harry Styles character.
he's not completely outshined by Florence he hold his own part pretty well for it to be his first big role
I trust... this review .👍
Nick is so on point.
10:50 - 11:19 Interesting!
12:27 - 12:45 Very interesting!
What I'm hearing is that OW is her character Bunny and Bunny is one of those women who sell out other women. I think FP peeped this out about OW. OW started promoting this movie focusing on the sex scenes and never mentioned other themes in the movie. FP didn't like that and said as much in the Harper's article.
Some Wandavision shit! Hahaha!
The twist was a massive dissapointment for me personally
Made alotta the film feel irrelevant
I enjoyed the movie, but it felt like there was originally more to this movie that got cut for time. Instead of reworking the script they just left stuff in with no follow through or explanation. They should’ve added more time to flesh out some parts, or spent less time on imagery and Alice’s psychosis. I really think there was supposed to be more about Gemma Chan’s and Chris Pine’s characters but we knew almost nothing about them.
Jack was a loser, but it could’ve spent a little more time on him in the real world. His character was very delusional, but I think he truly thought he was doing Alice a favor by keeping her there. He did all of it for her, where as the other men most likely did it for themselves, which is why Frank’s character was interested in them. I thought maybe Frank made her see the plane crashing where headquarters was on purpose since he controls the simulation.
I think the point of this movie was to have a conversation about masculinity but it cut out too much of the men’s POV to fully flesh that out.
Spoiler question , doesn’t Alice go to the office after the crash of the plane so wouldn’t she just have woken up then or I’m guessing someone grabbed her but it wasn’t shown.
i just watched this instead of the movie. thank you.
I prefer reading film reviews to watching them but I found this most adorable, relatable duo and I've since been hooked! Don't want to give my money to Olivia Wilde so I'm watching this one instead. Keep shining, Beautiful Ones 🤎
This was pretty much on the mark. I went to see it for Florence, cause shes always amazing. She literally carried the move. However, i was entertaining, i felt the tension although it lacked so much explanation that it bothered me, i needed more of what was really going on. And i do have to disagree about harry styles. I know very little about him other than he sings, but bad actors make me cringe in my seat. I thought for being a freshman actor up against Pugh, he held his own well and I didn’t cringe. Lol! Love you guys
A pass. I'll just watch the stepford wives, and enjoy all over again. Love you guys❤️
Yep.
Not sure I want to see this. Sounds to me like Wilde has gotten in over her head!!!! It sounds exactly like Stepford Wives. I saw Booksmart and it was overrated to me!!!! Great review per usual❤
Joseph is daddy af
I hope to God that Harry Styles doesn't get chosen to be the next James Bond. He's not a good actor.
This movie was so awesome, I was glued to the screen from beginning to the end. Olivia did a great job to achieve this during the pandemic. It was the first movie filmed during Covid and had multiple Covid shut downs during its production.
So basically Wilde's character is kinda like Yvonne Strahovski (sp?) character in The Handmaid's Tale? She co creates a world that suppresses women for her own gain.
Definitely some parallels to be drawn. Both serena and olivia's character decide to give up independence to chase after motherhood.
sounds alot like that Antebellum movie ...I'll pass .......I can't wait to see My Policeman ,I love David Dawson ,and the book was well written
Watched the movie just so I could watch this review
Hmm what character was Shia LaBeouf going to play in this
Jack. He was replaced by Styles
@@ginad.6917 Thanks!
Just saw this. Is it just me or did Chris Pine sound like James Spader?
I knew theyre werent in the real 1950s since the moment I saw florence nails in the trailer;that nail polish was way too dark fro the era standards🤣🤣🤣
I didn’t know about Olivia not following Covid protocols. She really is very problematic in many ways isn’t she. I’ve been waiting for this review since I definitely won’t be watching this film. Scandal aside it’s just another Stepford Wives knockoff.
I gave it the same score in my review. It’s alright.
I loved ‘The Village’
Nick should should’ve written the script. The movie would’ve been better!😎🥰
"The Village" by M Night Shyamalan does the same thing by showing a supposed back in time community, but you notice right away it's off because the "village" fails to have a religion. This movie did the purposeful diversity, so you know it's not really the 1950s - - but that made me wonder, why no gay couples?
3 out of 5 is way too generous. IMO
But why do the men even want to keep the women in the virtual reality...? Does that mean that irl Florence already married irl Harry? If so then why force her into the VR world if he already had her?
Yeah doesn't really make sense lol
Is it so the women are easily controlled and completely submissive to the men like a Stepford Wife?
@@yennefer440 He was unhappy with their real life. He doesn’t make enough money to share the burden so Florence’s character had to pick up long shifts in the hospital and it was suggested they don’t get to spend much time together anymore. He thought she was tired and miserable and decided this virtual haven was a better alternative.
It looks like they split irl. I don't think they were married irl. Jack was dead weight and Alice bounced up out. In one scene we can see Alice's feet as she's being dragged.
It was really good movie. I understand the whole part of it !! Yes end could be 7 of 10
I thought Antebellum has similar twists but it was a hot ass mess. Agree?
The nick Kroll shade.....
Lol @ Nick Kroll comments
Knock off stedford wives wit Nicole Kidmen. I loved that movie, at least it was complete
Love the channel & actually I’m not close friends with Pugh, buuuuttttt we do have mutual friends & I’ve posted this on a few reviews. I saw this movie during a private screening, after a dinner party & Pugh said a few things. One, no one ever brought up The Stepford Wives while filming or at least never to her🤷🏻♂️. She also didn’t say anything disrespectful about Wilde or anyone honestly, she just didn’t feel safe around an actor who wasn’t complying with Covid rules & wasn’t vaccinated, but everyone was supposed to be, so again🤷🏻♂️. The only thing she did say was that she wasn’t doing press because the drama has become toxic & she doesn’t do drama🫶🏼 or want her fans, more importantly, to see her in that way. She saw her fans trying to defend her against trolls & that’s when enough was enough💪🏻 & I applaud her for that. She’s an old soul/free spirit & instead of using the drama to get attention, like some people did, she just stepped back to protect her fans, which says it all🏆. I’ve only met her a few times, but she’s just a normal person, doesn’t act rich, better than anyone we’ve been around, or like a lot of famous people act. And 🧌s come, but I have the dinner party pics & oddly videos of us all trying to rollerblade down a super steep hill, where you see Chastain screaming & fall, but fell into grass😂. Pugh makes this movie & I loved it because of her acting & the cinematography, & no I don’t think I’m bias, we aren’t bffs lol. She just happens to be friends with one of the biggest PR woman in Hollywood & that’s our only connection. We see each other at parties at the house. It’s worth a watch in my opinion. I did get MCU gossip though & OMG cannot wait for Thunderbolts & a little cameo coming on Disney+ & god no. Not She Hulk, now that show is a mess & without the drama. Also, no Pugh didn’t cook lol, she did bring macaroons though😍. No disrespectful BS comments either, I’m just a fan of the channel & trying to stand up for someone I know & I’ll just ignore 🧌s. Now back to this video👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
