    Everybody wants to know why and wants a background to this movie. it’s very clear. Was there a background for slavery to begin with?!? NO. They did it because they felt like it. Past and PRESENT! All of the characters that were place in this situation were obviously strong BLACK LEADERS or Influencers, and whoever the “President or Owner” of this reenactment plantation choose who he wanted. Trying to hush and control them again to regain “White Power”..... I totally understood this movie and I honestly loved it! Modern Day SLAVERY! That’s still happening today

    • @MovieFiles

      So you personally feel that the directors feel that we live in a present day slavery?What's the call to action in the films message?

      @April Shae...I enjoy the movie as well.. refuse to go on field trips to plantations (from the boot) when I was younger because I had the exact same plot of this movie in my head and to see it I feel I was right not to go on these so call education trips.

    • @MovieFiles
      @MovieFiles  Před 3 lety +4

      Yeah but what’s the call to action and I’m sorry, we live in some insane times and the injustices going on are completely ridiculous but we are comparing slavery back then to now in my opinion isn’t a comparison.

    • @nailzbyshae9289
      @nailzbyshae9289 Před 3 lety +15

      The fact is bigots and narcissists hides in PLAIN SIGHT everyday. The owner who Janelle drugged in the cremation house said something very important. Quote: “We’re NOWHERE but we’re EVERYWHERE! Now that’s a major fact. He was literally the mayor of the town they were in “Government”. He made a whole Civil War Reenactment Center “The Cover Up” and had a WHOLE real life slavery plantation in back of it😳 The purpose of the movie was to make people feel, what would it be to have a free life of your own and then out of nowhere get snatched up without any regards and be treated and handled with no respect and owned like property. That’s the comparison for the Modern time. Again Modern Day Slavery. We’re getting shot down in the streets, killed by the police, etc etc and your going to tell me that you don’t see a comparison in the movie?!?! Hmmmmm ok. Well to each their own. I respect your opinion. Everybody haves one💯

    I actually liked it! It had layers to it. When I think of this movie I will think of “Make America great again” I think they gave us Get Out...a blk man, his story under white supremacy. Now you have a blk woman... her story under white Supremacy.
    I liked how in the beginning you were lead to believe it was one thing, then you saw it really wasn’t that thing. Also I don’t believe it was a movie that you necessarily had to take something from. It was what it was. Just like with Get Out. Something to make you think. I actually liked that her friend wasn’t the typical fat girl, but very confident/ arrogant. I could go on and on, but no spoilers. I will be honest and say I don’t think many will like this movie. I really liked it and will be watching it again to see if I missed. I didn’t like the ending!

      H2Finest I can specifically lay out three things to make the movie tie up their loose ends. Lol. The beginning is the first thing! Start with missing black influencers, leaders, etc. Then you go into the plantation. After that flash back to missing people searches and THEN to her early life. Also, maybe they add in some memory deletion? Something to take away why these intelligent leaders couldn’t effectively communicate and organize (outside of no talking). Then explain the young lady. Was she a young activist? A doctor? Who was she? We need to care about her, outside of her being pregnant. Lol. And then the ending...give us a little more.

    Yeah, this film was a big no for me. Mainly for two reasons: the way the film almost maniacally enjoys showing black women in pain as shock value. This is even more disturbing when you realize who wrote and directed the film. Let's not get it twisted, slavery was horrific but I don't want it to become commodified for entertainment value.
    Secondly, this film was marketed as sci-fi/supernatural horror and it has absolutely none of that in the film. There is nothing worse than realizing a trailer lied to you, as an audience member. BTW, my friend and I called the twist within about 15 minutes.....Janelle is great but she deserves better.

      Listen I saw the two guys who are the writer/directors in an interview. Real talk- the Black man gave me a Lee Daniels vibe. (You know that ain't good. Lee only writes destructive things for sisters.) And the white guy doesn't care. Showing black pain means nothing to him. He's just trying to build his resume. They both are.
      I've decided that whenever possible I'm going to vet filmmakers who make movies with Black people.

    • @Cina-nae
      @Cina-nae Před 3 lety

      @@jesushateswood OMG that's so terrible. Yea, if I hear Lee Daniels name I'm running away. His films are very under the white gaze, and I just don't understand how someone can traumatize your actors like that. If you can find it, can you send me that interview?
      I've seen some truly great films with black people, but when a movie usually only had the same one black writer involved it's troublesome. Not to mention that they really deceived us in the marketing.

I do think there was a message to the movie but it was incredibly subtle... and for the level of brutality and psychological trauma you have to watch the characters go through, it could have been presented in a much better way. It is psychologically horrifying because it deals with the reality of the past in a very present way.

    The editing was terrribblee. They should have pulled a "The Village" and only revealed present day until the end. And the "twist" was so cheesy. Also, where is the back story? Why do the people do what they do? What was the point of their actions? This is why people are saying that they are sick of Slave films. When you don't present a coherent narrative and just dwell on the pain--it's just torture porn. What a dud.

    I feel like no one did the homework, lol. The "twist" was the freebie it was given in the trailer. In my opinion it was a means to highlight ANYTHING that was not the twist. (a) why was Janelle or the "Sapphire" personas targeted for societal removal (b) why or how could an atrocity be play dressed as "entertainment" and succeed in hiding this way?(c) What were the captors"Denton Blake" hoping to esteem his followers into reclaiming by rape and murder (d) What does it say about a collection of people who only feel they can remain the dominate power by government sanctioned suppression, rape and murder? (e) What does it mean for the future of ally advocacy if as long as "does not challenge the grand ole' party" structure? (Hello Constitution, that I love) A group of people were "play- acting" (re-enactments) at maintaining and butchering a captive society WHILE KEEPING AND BUTCHERING A REAL CAPTIVE SOCIETY. Literally that is a snuff film. OMG. OK I AM DONE, LOL.

    The movie starts off strong, but the characters and storyline were under developed. Certain parts fell flat, like it seemed at one point they wanted it to be horror, but didn't go anywhere with that plot. The visuals, costumes were great. The friends were annoying as heck. It became a bit predictable. The movie kept my interest, but it was just okay.

    This film is part "get out + hostel + The Village" + a dash of Westworld with a Tarantino-ese revisionist spin to drive home the specific historical symbolism in American history. A haunting premise of a story on factual truth about slavery, but didn't hit the mark. I also thought there was going to be a Sci Fi angle here but no...juked by the trailer. Save your $ on this.

I just thought the film had too many plot holes and way too many convenient moments to move whatever plot there was supposed to be. Hi Elliott, thank you for sharing your review on this movie. I want to explain what I think the white characters motives were in this movie. The white characters are racist. They do not want to see Black people be successful, happy, healthy and progressive. I feel that some of these white characters owned the Antebellum Civil War Re-Enactment Area which was only supposed to be for the re-enactment of the the Civil War. I feel as though the other area where the slaves quarters are and the master's house is was "added" or maybe it was already there, considering the location of where the characters are but maybe that part of the area was closed and somehow some of the white characters opened it. I do believe, only "certain" white people knew about it, like the white elite or something. I believe that the white elite wanted to take down any Black person who they think is successful and progressive, who they think is a threat to them, kidnap them and make them into their slaves. I wish the screenwriters would have explained this stuff instead of us having to play Nancy Drew, lol.

    Antebellum...what can I say after having struggled to continue watching this hot mess? This movie is the visual definition of 'wish fulfilment' for a particular demographic. I just kept thinking...Oh NOOOO don't give Trump and his base any ideas! What was the message of this nightmare fuel supposed to be? White people are jealous of successful African Americans? We don't need a lesson from this film, we have Tulsa and Rosewood for that. It felt like they made this JUST to show the brutality of slavery in graphic detail... I mean WHO is this movie for? Is it to train us to be quietly subjugated? Or maybe to teach us not to be so 'uppity'. Is it a blueprint for White people? Or perhaps its message is more insidious...that in our (black people) quest for justice, self improvement, both financially and intellectually we have inadvertently put targets on our backs. I have no idea why this was made but I'm sure it can find a home, being screened before all Trump's rallies while his sycophants chant "Chain them up!"

You carefully craft your words by saying people when in fact it was black people be specific. The character Veronica did provide a five-star performance throughout this film, however I suspected early on given the first scene when the woman who was attempting to run away carried herself in a modern fashion with the nose ring and the gold necklace. I suspected at that point this wasn't a typical slave film.

THE PLANTATION STILL EXIST, IT NEVER LEFT. " Just like today they are trying to keep us black people quite and not speak up about the truth or standing up for equality." Bottom line WAKE THE FUCK UP! This was a beautiful movie. In my opinion, WE should never be tired of slave movies; we need to be reminded so we don't slip up, because we are still in slavery. We need to understand we are being brainwash everyday. We are so distracted by entertainment and social media pages that we don't realized what's going on around us. IT WAS HARD TO WATCH! People don't understand this film for the same reasons they don't understand BLM. The backlash is in direct relationship to the point of the film. What seems obvious to those of us who love it, is the very case the film is trying to make.
    People call black lives matter stupid because it calls into question the most plain understanding we have about race relations in North America. It's overwhelming to see so much of our perceptions of reality smashed by those who stand up and speak their truth. People don't understand BLM because to understand it means to reconsider your own relationship to your own story and your role in history.
    The backlash to this film is because it's too easy. It's much easier or simpler than previous films in this genre like US, or GET OUT. Simplicity is sometimes the most difficult thing to catch on with. Is it so hard to realize that the point being made is that structural racism is real and lets people get away with anything, even the systematic murder and imprisonment of bipoc at an unparalleled rate to that of whites? Police murdering bipoc people happens everyday, yet many americans question the victims, not the system. Modern slavery is real. Black lives are being taken and exploited in every avenue available. And this includes avenues that seem on the outside to be about "never forgetting" our history. No matter how famous you are, you're not too famous to be black in America.
    White America (and a small segment of bipoc America), is so clearly blinded by structural racism that we are in an Antebellum. We are on the cusp of another civil war. And it's because we are being held captive by hidden, silent, and unaware supremacist ideologies that shaped our nation.
    The "twist" isn't a twist because reality isn't a twist. It's just reality.

    • @ccanary3133
      @ccanary3133 Před 3 lety

      Also, being confused is part of the story. People don't know what anyone is trying to say about "repeating" the past. Literally everything you're saying is EXACTLY what white nationalist are saying about what black people are trying to say to the WORLD. Don't you understand that the fact that it's an "identity crisis" is exactly the point? The "text book" quality IS what it has to say.

    Just finished watching this myself. All I could think was this movie wishes it was Get Out. The depiction of slavery while likely accurate was over the top for the message they were trying to present. The twist was not very surprising. If the message really was going to be the past repeats itself or we can't shed our past it could've presented it in a modern way which is what Get Out achieved. Instead they went hard on the white people cosplaying traitors and gave no motivation whatsoever. The villains of this film did what they did for fun? Because they could? They seemed to have no ultimate goal at all. No end game. I only found the ending satisfying because the villains were brutally murdered. So if anything the message I got was gratuitous violence and revenge will make you free and I don't think that was the writer's intended message.

    The twist was given away in the trailer, I am nearly 100% we can agree but that is not what made the movie interesting or horrific. The horror is psychological not in slavery but in the FACT that people living in current day, harbor a DESIRE to return to this (a) a lifestyle that robs another group of all the rights and freedoms due them EQUALLY and it is celebrated 😳 Do we go to Auschwitz reenactments? or Hiroshima blast zone reenactments? or Japanese internment camp dinner theater? (b)Also, the film puts to test the mental "arrogance" of escaping bondage when as a singular human when you have no agency in controlling your decision/planning/recon to escape. Where to? How to? With whose help? By what means? Often, people are quick to screech "that could never be me if x/y/z". The characters do not know where or how they got there! Janelle's character could have met ocean when escaping on horseback, then what? which ocean? (c) Lastly, I am curious and somewhat mildly insulted by your assessment GB's character being tied to a troupe. What made her such? Was it because she raised her voice once? She was being provided subpar service and seating near the garbage/dirty dish collection station with a reservation while three vacant tables of better seating are empty. No, the failing action is found within the skill set of the hostess. No sir. No. She was confident, assertive, flirty. If this character was cast as actress Rebel Wilson (whom I adore) or Jennifer Lopez, would your opinion be the same? Or if her character was cast as a male, Nathan Lane (who I also adore) would the performance have been declared as a "Tyler Perry" troupe? Or would she be seen as "witty, funny, caring, a boss? I apologize for this being this lengthy.

    The people in the film are still connected to the pass.
    There are some who would love for that time period to come back again.
    The oppressor's class went beyond and recreated the horrific reality
    Melinated people who go against and speak out are "the enemy"
    The lack of lines/script allows the viewer to think more and pay attention to details.

    Excellent review Elliot couldn’t agree more definitely is a convoluted mess that has twist and concept that’s seems decent but it ultimately falls flat in the grand scheme of things. Not a good psychological thriller it’s could’ve been executed better.

      Yeah the twist got in the way of the film having a actual plot. Thank you for watching my review.

    The 1st trailer showed "the twist" so I don't know why ppl are jarred (unless they don't have deductive reasoning skills). The only thing I didn't understand was @the end... she ran towards the sound of gunfire. I don't understand that choice by the character, I know they include it because it made a great cinematic scene on film. Outside of that it wasn't a bad film. It's an unpolished Get-Out. A B- at worst.

    I strongly disagree with your take on the film. I thought it was among the innovative thrillers I have ever seen. The cinematography and the music were very well done. The storytelling was fantastic. It established a setting, heightened tensions and provoked a lot of questions until the point at which the narrative pieces were assembled to provide a horrific picture. I expected a strong speculative fiction foundation to this movie. What I received was unexpected and shocking, with a gratifying, pulse pounding payoff at the end. Kudos to the filmmakers. As for a message. I don't care if the film had a message or not. Seeing Klansmen, Nazis, white supremacists of any stripe getting their *&^% handed to them is enough message for me.

    Just saw the movie and it was good to me, don,t understand why we as black people don’t get this movie. The “Re-enactment set was enough... the movie opens with the quote about the past, do you want to kidnapped and enslaved! Veronica was taken because was an intelligent successful black leader, they were killing them then and still killing now. The ending could been better but the cinematography was outstanding. A lot of great messages in this film, from whites trying to control, intimidated by us, wanting to be us and fear if we actually fight back. And was a thriller and horror, slavery was and still is a horror story.

      its not about not getting it and just that we all take the message or for me the lack of a call to action, differently. Either way thanks for sharing your opinion and for watching my review.

    this was great ..the fact that they could have a farm somewhere to do shit like this to missing pple was genius.. simply bc u have kidnapped movies but not ones that make real statements like this one. Moral of the story is be careful who you offend an you may think you free but in the wrong place, huh.. an the fact that they took her after they warned her...makes you think why snoop dog went on jada red table to cry an apologize so he wont end up missing..they say Gucci mane cloned ..well maybe he just on a farm somewhere 🤷‍♀️

    I didn't think the message was convoluted at all! "Make America Great Again" This is the time period some of them devils want to revisit. This movie just showcased one of those scenarios. Hell, a couple got away with keeping 10+ kids chained to beds for years. Anything is possible in this evil world. It's simply a think peice. Not that confusing. lol
