- I noticed that the normal light on my Samsung Dishwasher, model number DW80M2020US, was flashing. This error code usually means there's something wrong with a leak, drip pan sensor, or other drainage problem. Doing a bit of research and troubleshooting, I figured out the issue was with a jammed impeller. Please consult a professional before attempting to do any sort of repairs. Thanks for watching and please like, comment, and subscribe for more videos.

5 years later and you saved me a repair man visit. Mine was a piece of glass!
That's outstanding, well done for successfully troubleshooting it. Also, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. It really makes my day knowing I was able to help someone 👊
Boss. You just saved yourself about $300 and helped me out to do the same. Thank you my brother.
Excellent, that's a significant cost avoidance. I'm happy my video could help. What ended up being the main issue with your system?
Omg this saved my dishwasher! Maintenance never showed up to my apartment so I took matters into my own hands. Was a success from this video!😄
Outstanding :D I'm glad you were able to get it working. Self reliance for the win!
Your video saved the day! Our dishwasher works again! Thanks so much!
That's awesome you got your system working. Was it a piece of plastic jamming the impeller?
Same as below, 5 years later and you saved the day! Great job, great video and thank you so much!
Thank you for taking the time to share a comment. It always makes my day when I hear that my video helped someone. Also, that's crazy how quickly time flies. Seems like it was just yesterday that I was troubleshooting it. Anyway, thanks for checking out my video, and I'm happy it helped 👊
thank you for posting this repair. my dishwasher wasnt draining. had an olive seed stuck where the impeller is. your video saved me a service call. thank you again
That's outstanding that you got your system working. It's interesting how something as small as an olive pit can disable the whole dishwasher. Thanks for checking out my video 😀
Great video. Great description of your thought process and on top of that you got right to the point without alot of extra talking about things that werent pertinent to the problem. Best video I have seen regarding this problem. Thanks
Thank you for the kind words, this comment just made my day 😃 I'm happy I was able to help out.
Thank you so much for creating this video. We are in the UK and have a different model of Samsung to you but the principles still applied. We have just fixed our dishwasher by finding a blue gemstone (! we have children..) in our impeller. We are over the moon at not having to call out the plumber.
Hi Camilla, that's outstanding that you were able to get it fixed. There's nothing like the feeling of figuring out how to get something to work again 😁
thanks for a great video!!! i have a different model, but symptoms were the same, the culprit in my case was the end of a chopstick stopping the impeller…
dishwasher is back up and running…
took me maybe 30 minutes!!!
thank you again!!!
Awesome, well done for getting things working again 👊
Had the same problem with my Samsung dishwasher. It's a different model but the same idea. No screws to remove on the bottom panel and the pump housing turns to the right to remove, with no locking devices on the housing, just a friction fit locking system. I also needed to disconnect the water supply line and remove the drain hose from the drain under my kitchen sink due to the way my dishwasher is hooked up.
Turns out it was a piece of glass that was in the impeller. The vanes have slight damage but the pump still works.
This video was a huge help before I took this project on. There was nothing I needed to guess at while disassembling it. For anyone with basic mechanical aptitude this is a do-able repair.
Thank you!
That's awesome you were able to get it fixed. It's crazy how one component can stop the entire system from running. Good thing that troubleshooting and repairing it is reasonably doable. Take care, and thanks for checking out my video :)
Thank you so much! Dishwasher stopped draining, looked up the error code and ended up here. As soon as I saw what the problem was with your dishwasher, I knew that had to be an impeller issue with ours, too! It was honestly kind of suspenseful to see what we would find in there - opened it, and voila! A tiny chip from a ceral bowl. FINALLY the dishwasher runs again, with NO money spent on the repair. Thank you for teaching at CZcams University!
It's a wonderful feeling to get something working on your own, and the relief of not having to hand wash so many dishes. Thanks for checking out my video, I'm happy I could help 😀
First time ever breaking down my dishwasher, this clip saved me so much effort! Thank you for this clip!
I'm happy the video helped. Were you able to figure out the specific issue? Was it a piece of plastic jamming your impeller?
Thanks to you I fixed my dishwasher without needing my home warranty or much of anyone else’s help! No obstacle too big for this independent lady! 💪🏻☺️
Outstanding, Alexa. There's nothing like the feeling of getting things working again. Just out if curiosity, how did you get the system working again? Was there something jamming the impeller? Thanks for checking out my video, glad it helped 😀💡
@@karatefox lol, I guess the only obstacle that independent lady finds too big is replying to yt comments
@@madmattlikesgreen I'd like to think it's because she's been too busy fixing dishwashers to reply back 🤣 In any case, I'm just happy I've been able to help people. The replies and comments are just the icing on the cake for me.
Great video. My dishwasher was unable to work for a year. I was actually getting ready to buy a new one. I figured I’d follow your lead as one last stitch effort. To my surprise there was a huge rubber band wrapped around my impeller (damn kids). It’s running as we speak. Thanks for posting. Huge help.
Holy sh!t, a rubber band? That's awesome you were able to extricate it and get the system working. 👊
@@karatefox yeah i have 3 boys. They put rubberbands around their cups to tell whos is whos throughout the day. I guess one broke in the dishwasher and got wrapped up in the impeller and swelled up over time. But im thankful for your video. I almost gave up. I appreciate you posting this fix. You're the man.
@Warmageddon Music
Ooh, the struggle is real. With our kids we tried getting them different colored cups so they wouldn't fight with each other. I like the rubber band idea, but that's a good insight in terms of the risks to the dishwasher. In any case, that's awesome you were able to get the system working. 👊
I completed the first 2 steps of this video and my dishwasher is up and running for the time being. Thank you for your help!
That's awesome to hear, happy the video helped 👊
Thanks for saving me the cost of a new machine which was what I thought was needed. A little porcelain chip from a broken bowl was the culprit. Thanks again!!!
That's awesome you were able to figure out the issue, thanks for checking out my video.
Mine had a piece of broken glass! Not the same model (mine is DW80K7050), but same problem. I had to figure out some steps by myself on my model, but I would never had go that far without this video. Thanks a lot!!!
That's awesome you were able to get it fixed. It's crazy to think that a small piece of glass, or in my situation a piece of plastic, can make the entire system shut down. Thanks for checking out my video.
You just saved me a dishwasher. I found glass jamming it up. Amazing job.
Awesome, I'm happy you were able to figure it out. Just out of curiosity, how do you think the piece of glass got into the dishwasher system? Is it possible that there could be additional pieces?
The layout in my machine is completely different, but the components look similar/the same. Thanks a lot, you saved me money and time from having to get it repaired.
My obstruction actually was wedged in the hose directly AFTER the impeller. No idea how it got through the pump, but it explains why it pumped some liquid but not all of it.
Interesting, that's great that the parts were similar enough to help troubleshoot your system. What was the obstruction that you removed? Do you know where it likely came from?
Did the same thing and worked.
The impeller was squeaky clean and no broken plastic debrids.
However, it seems that this procedure reset the dishwasher and now it's working.
Thanks alot!
Interesting, perhaps just turning off the power somehow reset the warning sensor. It's probably a good idea to still keep an eye on it just in case the sensor trips again. Please let me know how it's working or if you figure out why the sensor was tripping.
Thank you for posting this!! Saved me $900, or a repair cost! 🤙
Outstanding, congratulations for getting things figured out. It's an awesome feeling to be able fix things on your own 👊
Thank you! My dishwasher wasn’t draining and I was planning to go through all the steps but then my garbage disposal stopped working. I used vinegar/baking soda, and boiling water to clean it, reset the garbage disposal and then tried the draining cycle on the dishwasher and it worked! I could see the water draining into the garbage disposal drain. If it stops working again, I’ll be sure to refer to this 😊
Awesome, I'm happy you were able to get it figured out and working. Likewise, thanks for sharing the troubleshooting steps utilized. Hopefully people will see this comment and feel less stressed. 🤔💡
Thank you. You're video got me through this after trying a few different things 🙌🙌🙌
Glad you were able to get it working. How did you end up fixing it?
Thank you so much for posting this video! We followed your guidance and found the blades completely off! Dishwasher fixed!
Outstanding! I'm glad you got it figured out. What do you think caused the blades to fall off?
@@karatefox there was a little piece of a dish that had chipped in there as well. That’s my suspicion.
You're not going to believe this but I was watching this video and when you popped off the impeller and that white chunk was in there I was thinking "I wish it was that easy. There's no way I open this and it's that obvious." But, I popped off the impeller (mine went counter clockwise) and there was a chunk of broken plate sitting in there. I was amazed. I put it all back together and it worked like a champ! Thanks so much for this video!
Thank you for the kind words, friend. I'm glad you were able to get things working.
Hey, thanks. Had a flooded kitchen. Used your hints, dishwasher is back to working. Awesome.

Hi Salomi, that's outstanding. I'm happy you were able to get it working. What specifically was the issue, just out of curiosity?
I really enjoyed your video. Going to troubleshoot my dishwasher this weekend- thank you!

That's awesome you were able to get it working. Thanks for checking out my video. It's a great feeling knowing I've been able to help someone navigate through the process. Hopefully now it'll be easier to troubleshoot if a similar issue happens again.
My guy your video saved me money had something blocking the impeller as well. Great video.
Excellent, I'm happy you were able to get things working. Just out of curiosity, what did you find blocking it? Was it glass or hard plastic?
@@karatefox it was a plastic piece
@jwylde7 Interesting, it seems like hard plastic fragments are fairly common. Once again, excellent work for getting your system working again. Feel free to reach out if you need help troubleshooting in the future 👊
yep, there was a piece of glass wedge in the impeller Stopping it form moving. your video was the first one to show the motor pulled apart and something crammed in it. Thanks much.!!!!
That's awesome you were able to figure it out. Thanks for checking out my video and feel free to reach out if you need help troubleshooting in the future 👊
Useful video. It might help some people to know that exactly that same pump is fitted to quite a few machines - including my 5 year-old Teka, and can be purchased as a spare part for less than $50, and then fitted just as you show in your re-assembly.
That's good to know. Perhaps it's like an industry standard to use that part. It's a sturdy little impeller, and mine has weathered a few jam-ups already. Perhaps Samsung should evaluate their drain design and add a better filter to further prevent foreign material from colliding with the impeller. It seems to be a common failure mode.
Yes, but I suspect the only way something big gets from machine chamber to pump is if the filter is not absolutely secure in its housing - it's easy to leave it loose, then the water jets will probably move it around. We've had glass fragments get through ours when we have left it a bit loose. That model pump does seem to be used a lot and (oddly..) it's price seems to vary with manufacturer of dishwasher, even though the part seems identical (and I'm sure it is). I see that some US stores ask almost $200 if you are fitting it to a Samsung but I can find what seems to be the same part in Europe for less than EUR 30! Thank goodness BMW don't make a dishwasher. If anyone out there looks to do a replacement, it will be well worth digging around a little. I did something even more miserly. My impeller shaft had corroded and the impeller sheared off - everything else was OK. I found a new pump for less than $15 and realised that the electromagnet internals were almost identical - a bit of sawing with the Dremel, and a little patient epoxy application and it's as good as new. It took a few hours and I would have preferred to replace the whole pump if I could have found one with quick delivery but I couldn't, and I don't like washing dishes.
@johnhorsfall9623 That's some next level MacGyver stuff right there 👊 I think that's awesome. As far as I'm concerned, as long as a repair works it's good. How's your water inlet valve doing? Those things seem to break pretty frequently too. But yeah, it's always a good idea to shop around for parts because the price can vary quite a bit from one website to another.
Thank you so much! This just helped us fix our dishwasher!
I'm happy I could help ^_^
Thank you! Helped me out big time. Great video
Thank you for the kind words, you just made my day :D
Awesome, Ben! You're such an amazing teacher!
Was a little different for my model, but absolutely worked. Thanks!
I'm glad it worked out for you. Mine's still working for now, but I think it's normal to have the machine breakdown every once in a while. Thanks for checking out my video.
Thanks for the great video! Mine is a different model, but the inside was nearly identical. Rocked out the repair this morning before the kids woke up… thanks for saving us some money!
That's awesome you were able to get it figured out. Was the impeller jammed like in my video or did you find a different issue?
It was almost exactly like you laid out… we had some chipped porcelain in there.
@zackery773 oh dang, that seems to be a common failure mode for these systems. Well, if it happens again in the future, it's nice having that peace of mind knowing that you can get it fixed on your own. Thanks for checking out my video, I appreciate you leaving a comment 👊
My problem was the impeller. Thanks for the tip. I used another video to figure out how to pull the impeller off.
Wow well done. my Samsung dishwasher, and washing machine both had issues, after 2 weeks they decided to tell me there was a re call on my washer. Now we tackle the dishwasher
It can be stressful when multiple appliances have issues at the same time. Hopefully things will be up and running for you soon. Thanks for checking out my video :)
This is great information and advice. One other thing to check before disassembling the dishwasher is the drain vent at the top, usually located on the sink. Sometimes that will get clogged with hair and lint and prevent the system from draining. The indication of this is that when you disconnect that drainpipe it'll still be full of water. That's a pretty good sign that the drain vent is plugged.
Absolutely agree. There have been times where I've let dishes hang out in the sink for a while and food debris has gotten washed into that opening. I've used a chopstick to clear the clog in the past. Is there a tool or technique that you'd recommend?
@mikefromwa - I disassembled the dishwasher tube from the sink drain and a small dime sized rubber tab fell into my bucket. It still had adhesive on it, so I knew it detached from some item we washed. It looks like a rubber sticker that is found under a cutting board to keep the cutting board from sliding. The heat from the machine loosened the adhesive and it ultimately became stuck where the dishwasher tubes connects to the sink drain. No more draining issues. Thanks @karatefox and @mikefromwa.
THis was exactly my problem
@@jonpaul3075zçc
I watched this video and thought for sure this was going to be the issue, but it did turn out to be my air gap on top of the sink being clogged. Definitely would have saved me hours of work and dissembling the dishwasher if I had thought to check that first.
Check air gap first!!!
Samsung dishwasher dw80k7050ug not draining 5E error. Quite a bit different model than the one in this video but the exact same issue. One of the screw tabs that mounts the dishwasher on the side was lodged in the impeller. You saved me a crap ton of money good sir. Thank you.
Thanks, Shane. Your comment just made my day. It's great that you were able to get things figured out.
This video really helped me. A piece of broken glass just smaller than a penny was stuck in the impeller. Like you said, I could hear motor humming but not turning. The pump came apart easily and the impeller housing is shredded from the glass. Now that it's all put back together this gleaming, practically new machine I got for free will replace my crusty old one. Thanks a lot! Wonder how the glass got past the filters......
That's awesome you got it fixed. I'm guessing a glass may have been dropped in the sink and a piece broke off, washed down the drain and went into the drain tube of the dishwasher. Especially if the garbage disposal was turned on, as the spinning blades could have flung the piece of glass around in the drain until being flung into the drain tube of the dishwasher. In any case, thanks for checking out my video 👊
Thank you, thank you. I just use your video to fix my dishwasher. A piece of broken plate was in the impeller!

Thanks, Pat, I appreciate the kind words.
Thank you, it worked! I have 3 kids so our dishwasher is a necessity. But now I can't get the braces back on to secure the dishwasher!
I'm happy you were able to get it working. Hmm, in terms of the braces to secure the dishwasher, perhaps try these things. First, carefully insert the metal clips into the top slots of the dishwasher frame. Then, carefully slide the dishwasher into the space it goes. Once it is most of the way in, slightly open the dishwasher door by its horizontal handle. This will cause the unit to pivot back slightly and allow the metal clips to slide under the counter top. Then, it's just a matter of wiggling the dishwasher side to side as you guide it all the way back into its space. For the screws, try to find the holes in the wood underneath the counter. Worst case scenario, you could just make some new holes and use a sharpie to mark the area so it's easier to find in the future. Please let me know if this works or if there are specific challenges you're experiencing. Always happy to help 🤔💡

Great video I enjoy it.

Thank you I have the same dishwasher, same issue
Thanks for checking out my video. What did you end up finding inside the impeller? Was it a piece of plastic similar to what I found?
Great video man! Really helpful! I still haven’t found the root cause of my dishwasher not draining properly but I did remove the impeller and it was actually pretty clean. The only concern I have is that my impeller did not want to spin like yours did. It would only spin about half a circle on both directions. I didn’t want to force it because I thought that maybe that’s how it was made but do you think something is causing it to not spin freely ?
Interesting, it sounds like there may be something jamming the impeller from the inside. How old is your system? When was the last time that it was working? What does it feel like once you turn the blades of the impeller? Is there friction after the half turn or does it just feel stuck like something isn't allowing it to make a full revolution?
It might be the magnets in the motor that give fairly stiff resistance every half turn - that's what they are supposed to do? But not rigid resistance. If so I guess one of the plastic waterproof seals has broken. It's fairly easy to dissemble and simply have a look inside. Take off the large grey plastic ring by prising gently with a large screwdriver, then grab the white, plastic seals with some suitable grips and pull.
Wooow quick fix There was a piece of wood from the brochettes from that diner with the inlaws huh! No more diner with the inlaws🤣
That's what happens when you invite the inlaws over for dinner...chaos ensues 😆 Glad you got the system up and running again 👊🔥

My impeller blade just fell off. Wife was ready to drop a grand on that Cafe double decker. Hell no!
Dang that's crazy. Were you able to just slide the impeller blade back on? Did you have to do anything else to make it stay on? Thanks for checking out my video.
Other solution: I got a new sink and garbage disposal. After that, the dishwasher suddenly stoped drained. Perplexed me. It might seem obvious that this is where I should have focused on. But hey, I followed the instructions here and still didn’t work.
Lo and behold, with a flashlight this time, another look at where the hose hooks up to the garbage disposal and i discover the culprit: The new garbage disposal had a little blocked hole (kinda like a plug but semi-permanent) that has to be knocked out when you first get the garbage disposal. So it would be like trying to a pee with a blocked p-hole (sorry for the visual lol).
Knocked it out with a screw driver and hammer. Bam. Drains like normal. Sheesh!!
Oh dang, I made a video where I installed a new garbage disposal and I remember seeing exactly what you described. I guess the idea there is sometimes people install garbage disposals but don't have a dishwasher that they want to hook up. But yeah, that darn plug needs to be removed prior to hooking up the dishwasher drain tube. Thanks for sharing your experience and checking out my video.
Had no idea that thing was the pump. I pulled it and my issue was fixed
That's great you got it fixed, thanks for checking out my video :)

@@melquemcleash6607 That's awesome you were able to get it fixed. What ended up being the problem with your dishwasher?
@@karatefox I removed the housing you showed and I noticed the house were clogged.
Thank you for this awesome video. It helped me alot with the disassembly. Mine is doing something similar, after 7 min of working, Normal start blinking and no the water stays inside (no draining), when I first tried to lift the float senor I didn't hear the drain motor humming. Opened it up and the impeller was clean. Dried everything down there but unfortunately the same issue is still there. Any idea? Suggestion on how to troubleshoot the drain motor.
Thank you again!
Thanks for checking out my tutorial, I'll see if I can make some recommendations. When you turn on the dishwasher, do you hear any sort of humming sound or is it completely silent? Also, if you look inside the dishwasher, have you tried unscrewing the drain cover to see if something is stuck clogging the drain? How long have you had the dishwasher? Hope I can help.
@@karatefox thanks for your reply. No there is no sound of humming, its completely dead. However, today i disconnected the drain pump and read the ohms reading across the two terminals. No reading and then I supplied AC 120v to the pump and it didn't move at all.
@@karatefox forget to tell you, I bought from Home Depot less than 2 years ago ( Dec 2017)
@@nawraswardia interesting, it sounds like the impeller might be burned out. I'd recommend ordering a new impeller and seeing if it works. If it doesn't, you might want to return it and try some additional troubleshooting. Another thing to take a look at is the drip pan sensor. If you remove the drip pan, you'll notice a circular plastic part with a wire coming out of it. If you unscrew it you might want to check it out; there's a piece of Styrofoam with a sensor on it. It might be stuck in the on-position and is giving a false warning of a flood. When you turn on the dishwasher, does the normal light still flash?
Thanks for this!
Happy I could help, thanks for checking out my video. Did the issue end up being related to the impeller?
Luckily ours was just taking out the twist off cap, metal screen and filter tube and then cleaning everything out. We used a wet dry vac to suck out the cavity and that seemed to make it work again. The water drains completely now. That was the first time we cleaned it out since we got it about a year ago. It's going to be a regular maintenance thing now. Probably once a month hurry and clean the cavity out.
@@MakeItMike That's great that cleaning the filter and drain worked. It makes a lot of sense to create a formal preventive maintenance plan. An ounce of prevention saves a pound of correction 🤔💡
Thank you for this video! Found a peach pit in my impeller.
That's awesome you were able to get it figured out. Dang, a peach pit. That's crazy.
Hey bud, thanks for saving me time and money.
That's awesome you were able to get things working. What ended up being the main issue? Was something stuck in the impeller?
@karatefox It had a metal screw and some rice stuck in it. Once I cleaned it out and put it together. It worked like a charm.
@just some Gamercat Excellent, it's great that it was something easy to clear out. It makes me wonder though. Where did the screw come from? 🧐
Thanks for the infor am a signal women learning how to be a home owner 😝
Happy I could help, Brenda. It's great when we can learn how to do things on our own. It saves a bunch of money and it's fun being able to see how things work. 🤔💡
Hey man, I know it’s been a while, but when you were in there, did you notice if there was styrofoam under the cover of the leak sensor?
It's been a while, but yes, I remember there being a disc of Styrofoam there for sure. I think the purpose of the Styrofoam is to float up when the drip pan is full of water, in order to trip a sensor. It's worth noting that it's possible for the Styrofoam to float up and then get stuck in the up position due to food residues-might be good to clean out as part of the troubleshooting process. Thanks for checking out my video :)
karatefox Thanks!

Thanks for checking out my video, glad I was able to help :)
Hi, i need to know the size of that rubber oring around the drain pump!!
Do you know what the model number is for your dishwasher? I'm not sure if they all use the same type.
Pre-rinse you dishes better, for future reference, and to prevent it from happening again.
Thanks for the recommendation, prevention is key
Mine would drain the water but still run the motor for a minute with the light flashing. I realized the washer was no longer level. The feet must have vibrated loose over time.
That's really interesting, I never considered the possibility that not having the machine level could affect its functionality. After adjusting the feet, did the flashing light go away?
@@karatefox yes it's working so far . After you explained the leak sensor I remembered reading that if it's not level, the machine can drip. Thanks
