Even something as simple as conveying that it's so stressful of a situation you can't think straight, but vaguely remembering something, and then further refining that with them in conversation until they get it correctly.
Now that's unlikely, but it is a non zero chance. Given enough exposure, eventually all of us are susceptible to being scammed. Just as all of us are flawed, none of us are immune to being exploited. The best thing to do is collectively alter the environments that create the motives to do things like scam others. There was a TikTok about a girl who was tricked into sending money to scammers because they "called from her sister's phone" but it was a spoofed number. @gnarthdarkanen7464 Před rokem

Just a set of plans "A, B, and C" in case of "the bad sh*t happening"...
Like a call from Jail? You can call the local courthouse offices or jailhouse directly and get sent to records for a role call check, to find out if someone specific is in custody... OR the Sheriff's office usually gets that kind of information... SO even if you can't get to your loved one on the spot, you don't have to trust fake police showing up at your door, which police don't do for bail anyway...
When you wish to post bail (in most states), you meet with a Bail Bondsman, and you sign off for 10% "collateral" and fill out a bunch of forms, listing friends, acquaintances, business contacts, addresses, and other information about how to find the "arrested person" in case they "skip bail"... Thereafter, so long as you (and they) make SURE to get to court on time, you get that collateral BACK. Court doesn't have to cost much of anything, especially for the innocent. Obviously, that comes with the caveat of "Keep your nose clean"... and relies somewhat on EVERYONE following the rule of law... BUT this is largely how it works to bail someone out of jail (in case it's real)...
SO when cop offers to come pick up the cash? It's BULLSHIT!!! AND now you can know that up front...
Okay... I know not everyone gets intimate enough with their State and Federal Laws and Judicial Branches to know they only risk about $200 and a 3-day stint in the county-clink for punching the SH*T out of someone who needs it... I can understand how mine is not the only way to grow up... It STILL PAYS DIVIDENDS to go find out HOW things work, so insidious f*cking people don't bullsh*t you into something stupid...
AND you can put the "safety phrase" or "password" into a Plan B or C if you think it's wise... Even a specific "Third Party Contact" can be an option... That's someone either of you can call to "check in" so you don't necessarily have to share all the most intimate (and sometimes icky) details of life with each other, just to avoid a scammer... I've had friends who could tell my mom the "code"... If I was busy knocking boots with a girl, they'd tell her I was "on a plumbing job" or "walking the neighbor lady's dog"... Different friends had different sets of code, and that also told ME where and how frequently my mom called around JUST to find or follow me...
Yes... My mother was occasionally a ROYAL pain in the ass... but I digress. ;o)

My dad fell for one of those scams last year. A guy called saying one of his kids was in an accident, and my dad automatically said my and my sister's names (big mistake). Then it turned from concerned citizen to "Well your daughter saw something she shouldn't have and now she's in trouble," which was also plausible because she and I worked - at the time - in two different cities not known for their safety. Dad said he could hear "a girl crying in the background." The scammer proceeded to threaten harm if my dad didn't send several thousand dollars via money orders from various stores around the city, all of which the scammer threatened anytime my dad wasn't talking or couldn't hear anything, which made it almost impossible for him to check to see if one of us was ok - even staying on the phone while he drove to different stores. My dad has that money, so he did it. It breaks my heart imagining how frightened he must have been running around for HOURS believing either of us were in harm's way. I was with my mom and my sister was working and had talked to us that day, so we were all ok. He never filed a police report because he felt ashamed that he fell for it.

Weekly, if not almost daily, I am engaging with older members of our community in identifying and avoiding these kinds of calls. Around our area, the calls are actually second to email scams, but they are coming more and more often. Educating people is the best option, but it only works until they change their methods again. Then it is up to those of us who are more able to learn and adapt to figure out what they're doing and reconfigure the education to match. It is a state of almost pure reaction. Thanks for giving some coverage to the issue. I might have to clip out your piece on solutions to show to some folks.

@@Nolascana and the majority of us in the industry believe this one is going to be so much worse….she is not a good candidate for release, even the pervious curator of the facility she is currently at has said as much in no uncertain terms. But these decisions are being made by the new ownership who doesn’t have the best track record. Killing Keiko is a book the does a decent job at explaining why it failed the first time.
It’s not why SeaWorld ended breeding but it definitely didn’t help the situation, SeaWorld made the decision to stop breeding due to misguided activists pressuring then to end the Orca program but that is a different argument all together.

    • @Nolascana
      @Nolascana Před rokem +2

      Ah, fair enough.
It's just a shame that water parks like Sea World aren't, yaknow by the sea.
I know a couple of seal rehab places and whatnot that are essentially a hop skip and a jump away so they can release rehabbed animals somewhat seamlessly, minimal intervention n all that.
It's a shame from a conservation perspective that facilities aren't like... made in open water. I mean, accessibility would be the main issue for such a thing. But, honestly it would make more sense than a tank.
I mean, to some degree. But, having wild animals perform is just cruel, always has been.
I mean sure there's enrichment and training an animal to open their mouth on command for dental checkups, but, outside of that...
I know it's where the funding comes from, n all, but, I wish there was a happy medium.
Some facilities, like Longleat in... South England(?) Do wonders for captive breeding and future release, but, they have ACRES to keep animals like Elephants and Giraffes in. They get traded to affiliated zoos before some get sent on to reserves abroad.
So, not every facility is bad n all. But. Still. Many were built before we understood the actual needs of the captive animals.

4:40 as soon as Phil said "the police said they had to collect the money" was the time to call real police, and I recognized it was a scam. Any time one is told to pay any legal related expense to anyone except your lawyer or directly to the court is a red flag. Further, bail is either paid to a court or, if the bail is high, to a licensed bail bondsman, not to alleged police officers or any other third party.

  • @ndawn90

Oooo, that scam call story makes me so damn mad.
Something similar actually happened to my Grammie about a year ago. I don't think it was AI, but someone called pretending to be my uncle (the one uncle who my Grammie would believe would be in trouble) saying that he robbed a drug dealer and she needed to pay his debt or they would kill him.
Fortunately, my Grammie lives with my other uncle and his wife, and my aunt was home and with her when the call came in. She was able to convince my Grammie to not act rashly, she was able to get law enforcement on the phone, and eventually they got in touch with my uncle (while my Grammie was still on the phone and extremely upset as the scammers were screaming and pretending to be my uncle crying and begging her to do something) and he was fine and had been at work. My Grammie even started driving to go get the money, but my aunt insisted on going with her while she was contacting law enforcement and my uncle, and my Grammie was so upset she took a wrong turn and eventually pulled over because she was too worked up to drive. They kept telling her to hang up, but she wouldn't, just in case it was real.
My Grammie is seriously the nicest, sweetest, most loving and giving and supportive person on earth. Yes, I'm biased, but it's 100% true. If I ever found the people who scammed her, I genuinely don't know what I would do, but it would almost certainly end in jail time.
Adding AI to the mix is genuinely terrifying. These scams were already really convincing and upsetting, so between caller ID cloning and AI, there are going to be so many more people falling for this garbage. Especially since the people who are most likely to fall for it are the ones who are the most loving and trusting and giving people. My Grammie was really the perfect mark, but fortunately the rest of my family aren't so trusting. They didn't get any money from her, but they broke her heart and that's unforgivable.
I'm not religious at all, but stuff like this makes me wish that there was a hell, because people who do these scams deserve to suffer for eternity.

So I have a bit of a scammer story. It happened to my best friend a few weeks ago. Hes on the SO registry, been on it since his teens and hes been a model citizen as far as I know, tells me hes never missed an appointment with the sheriffs office. He gets a call from someone claming to be from the federal branch in charge of the states SO registry saying hes missed an appointment to provide a DNA sample. Apparently they guy told him it was totally different from his regular check ins and he would be allowed to go to the sheriffs department to give DNA as long as he FIRST pay $2,500 to lift the warrant they had to put out since he missed a scheduled visit. He got scared and paid. Said he fell for it because he missed a residency check which is normal since they arent scheduled, they just show up, but he assumed that visit was also the one to schedule the DNA thing.

It was a few years ago, so I’m not sure if it was AI, but my grandfather, in his 80s, got a phone call from who he thought was my brother saying he was in jail and needed money (despite my brother never getting into trouble with the law). He was so convinced, that even after we sorted out the whole scam, he still thought my brother had just lied to him to get money and didn’t trust him for months. My brother was heartbroken.

That imposter scam happened to my grandmother! It happened when I was in college and the scammer called her and was crying telling her that I was in the hospital with a broken nose etc and I got in a car accident because I was drunk driving. I needed money so I wouldn't go to jail and to please not tell my parents. She said she'd see what she could do, then they called her again and it's was the "officer" telling her how much money I needed to avoid jail time and a decent lawyer. She said she'd have to talk to her husband, but THANK GOD she called my mom and told her the situation. My mom called me worried and upset and I answered and told her I was totally fine and that's bullshit. So I was able to call my grandma and stop her from sending any money, this was back in 2019.

Late last year a friends family got a call from someone claiming they had their grand daughter and if they didn’t pay a certain amount they wouldn’t see her again. They had a female child crying in the back and the grandfather got so worked up yelling at the scammer he ended up having a heart attack and passing. The police said it was happening a lot but they probably would never know who the caller was. It’s a horribly scary thing to have witnessed from the outside I can’t imagine for the families it’s happening to.

I live in Canada and every few months I get a call from a fake Duct cleaning company. It's a long con, they ask if I want my Duct's inspected for free, then set a call back date. A time and day is scheduled. The day before the appointment they call and offer a deal on the cleaning that can be done the same day as the free inspection. I rent so, I don't clean the ducts, but wanted to to play it out to see their approach. I ended up giving them a fake address and when I was asked for a deposit, I told them I knew it was a scam and the guy congratulated me on figuring it out. And said he would never stop calling. Pretty sure it was from India, since all the people who called spoke with an accent. Warn your friends!
