as a person who started working in a factory at 14, it doesnt matter how much training or regulations you put in place. My workplace got me to do many illegal things, I was moving 50lb boxes on shelves that were atleast 15 ft high. I was never given a WHMIS before working with dangerous herbicide. I knew these things were dangerous, but I didnt question them because I was 14, and $11.80 seemed worth it. Child labour laws protect kids from themselves, because they will be coerced to ignore the regulations.

It makes me feel blessed that I had parents that made me not do the dangerous jobs on the farm , even if at the time it mad me mad since all the other kids got to do it. As someone who was a high schooler with a part time job during the covid labor shortage- these labor laws are a terrible idea. Me and my fellow high school part timers were constantly worked the maximum amount of hours possible to make up for the lack of adult workers in fast food and often had to clock out in the middle of shifts because we reached the 40 hour limit for our state. Since this was during the school year, our grades suffered and one person I knew couldn’t graduate because of it. These teens don’t know that they are allowed to advocate for better hours because it’s their first job and are consequently exploited for their labor. This bill will just make it worse.

It sounds like they also might need to look at laws surrounding how young workers are informed of their rights and how their rights and dignity are maintained at work where you guys are. I genuinely wonder though if there’s a chance that a reasonable balance between the two could create future adults who have a much healthier approach to work not only for “the company” but for their own well-being. The idea of letting children work at my job, an industry also high on the labor deaths, is so freaking terrifying. There are dangers that people don't really think about until you get into it- operating machinery on steep slopes, the risk of lightning hitting equipment during storms (because, yes, not every job site takes storms seriously), and in general, flying debris. This potentially meaning that instead of the possibility of a VO program or whatever it is having the responsibility to make certain children are safe while doing the work they do as a voluntary learning objective, leaves them at liability for anything that goes wrong, while a parent signing off on a teen job may mean that any sort of liability that may pop up could be left at the feet of the parents, nothing to the workplace that could have unsafe conditions. People definitely do not always follow safe working rules/guidelines. There are people who learn the job, then learn all the shortcuts, cutting out the safety aspect because speed is valued above safety. The time "saved" by those unsafe working habits then become the benchmark as to what the employer expects in production, and then you have a situation where people can't always keep up, so unsafe working habits are taught to others in order to maintain expectations. My husband used to be the cleaning crew for multiple airlines, and yes they do have tight turn arounds. As a pregnant woman myself I can see both sides here and the fault lies on both sides.
      1) to the airline, Don’t serve popcorn if you don’t want a mess (if this was an adult with a medical condition, like Parkinson’s or cerebral palsy, this is going to be an issue too)
      And
      2) Parents do have a responsibility to watch their kids. If the child can not handle a snack like popcorn or if they are known to be messy, perhaps you pack extras of non messy snacks or hand your child the snack in smaller portions to insure a cleaner experience for you and your child.
This is a shit situation all around and both sides are at fault.

I purposefully moved out of the state so I could start a family because some of the abortion laws could have put my life at risk because of a medical condition. I had to move back with my family for financial reasons, and it feels like every week I hear about news laws being passed here that could be detrimental to my children and others in our community. If you can't even buy alochol until you're 21, why in the hell should it be legal to serve it under that age?!
And agreed, you open the door to kids working more hours, it's not going to be an option for a lot of kids, it's going to be pushed upon them as a mandate from their families. I don't want children, but I used to think that when I did, I would never allow my child to work in their teens, unless they absolutely wanted to and I would be fighting them on that at every step. School is exhausting enough as is, and summer breaks are precious.
As adults, we don't get those anymore. We have bills and responsibilities. Only if you're fortunate enough to get vacation time or can afford it do you get some time off and in most cases, it damn sure isn't going to be three whole months. I feel kids should enjoy their summers as much as they can because never again will they have both their youth and legal freedom to not work during those weeks. Oh and these companies/corporations don't even have to pay the kids minimum wage, so instead of hiring one adult at a reasonable wage they can instead hire 2-3 kids. No this is intentional. This has been the business interest's agenda ever since tobacco/smoking was heavily regulated for public health concerns. Since then business has been intentionally fighting in an effort to bring global business practices back to the gilded age. That is their goal to bring society back to those conditions. Everyone that is playing their part does so knowingly and intentionally. And their biggest point of leverage is everyone assumes they have no ill intent and are just ignorant. So they continually bring us closer and closer, step by step, to that goal, all the while playing the part of the well intentioned fool preying on society's forgiveness to not make them face the consequences their actions should demand.
These are things I discovered when looking into the federalist society and lobbying efforts against climate action. The tobacco industry pretty much convinced all of American business onto this plan shortly after they were regulated. That popcorn thing makes me think of all the warnings on united states products. I can just see it in the future: "By purchasing any food on the flight, I agree to not intentionally or repeatedly throw said food items on the floor, nor will I let a child in my care do so. If this term of service is broken I agree to pay a fine of $1,000 per instance."
The difference between a child repeatedly throwing popcorn with a mother not caring to stop them and a person throwing up is the difference between deliberately putting your responsibility on someone else and failing to perform your responsibility despite best effort due to illness or injury. Context matters.
5.5 months pregnant may or may not be visible depending on several factors like body type and clothing. If a random Karen who refuses to stop their kid from throwing popcorn around claims to be pregnant but it doesn't look like they are pregnant then people would just unanimously celebrate the flight attendant that makes them pick up the mess they *themself* let happen. Context matters.
In this case, with them really being pregnant it might have been a bit over the top to have them get down on the floor to clean up their mess. I wouldn't have seen an issue if she was provided a floor-brushset however. Of course, there's a lot of assumptions going around, it could literally be anything from a fit young healthy mother who laughed at their kid making a mess all the way to a kid spilling a whole bowl of popcorn at once with an airsick mother simply missing the opportunity to stop the mess from happening. On the schedule I'm listed as "Grocery", meaning I stock and organize shelves. But they always have me on register even when the other cashiers are right there not doing anything. I kept complaining about it until a couple weeks ago when I went to HR and complained about it. I formerly worked production for a reality TV company (not Kinetic, but actually a larger network that airs a lot of reality tv. Think hard, but not too hard lol). I specifically was responsible for taking “story notes” - which meant that I sat on set with headphones and screens in my face listening to everything said and watching everything that happened and taking real time notes of anything noteworthy - drama, conversations between cast, funny looks, possibilities for cut always, etc). The amount of pot stirring I witnessed from crew and producers was astounding. They definitely pushed alcohol and kept people from being able to have private conversations or any kind of situation diffusion. For example, if one character was talking about another character, possibly cheating on her, she would want to take out her phone and immediately call or text the person to see where they were, and confirm or prove it wasn’t happening. However, crew and producers would either not let them, or refused to give them their phone, because watching them spiral while thinking about, talking about, and worrying about the situation was far more dramatic. At times, I felt so incredibly terrible for the people involved. I felt like some of the things that happened were probably technically illegal, but they happened so fast and we were on such a short timeline, there was no time to ask questions or raise concerns. I know the people involved definitely signed up to be there, but there’s absolutely no way that they could have fully understood what they were signing up for. I totally believe that the LiB set was a hot mess and that they feigned incompetence to create a hostile environment that produced more drama. Kind of terrible :(

Oh God, no. 14 year olds shouldn't not be able to vote, there's no way that doesn't end poorly. And making their income tax free is just going to smack them upside the head when they suddenly start making less money because of needing to pay taxes.

@Xyex I think you're missing the point here. The point is that it's ridiculous to have kids both work and get taxed without giving them the rights to utilize the services that should be given in return ie. Voting.

It was the wife who took the picture. 28 weeks is 7 months by the way, as in limited mobility and a large baby bump. Forcing her onto her hands and knees to clean up popcorn with no tools is fucking ridiculous, they sweep the plane after EVERY flight and as it was just popcorn, it wouldn't even create more work for them to do - They already need to sweep that spot AND they have brooms/standup dustpans

@@carterdickinson5804s someone who has been 7 months pregnant, your mobility isn't that limited. I still worked as a CNA both times I was pregnant. The difference is that I would have instructed my child not to make a mess in the first place. My child would have also picked up the mess that they made. I now have 2 adult sons who know what is required of them as grownups. It's never too early to teach your child responsibility.

Because its the job of the flight crew to clean it up, its a service industry its part of the services you pay for. i mean the hotel staff doesnt make you clean up your bed do they? what if sick child vomits in plane, do they make you lick it off the floor??? i guarantee you no one would be out here saying this if a white flight attendant made a PREGNANT black woman pick up stuff their child spilled. its amost like once y'all see its a famous person, all common sense goes out the window and it quickly becomes a case of rich vs poor flight attendant. They are in the service industry, cleaning up little stuff like that is PART of the service. Werent we all disgusted at how flight crew handle disabled people without care because they are not their responsibility, i mean why would someone give a fuck about that if cleaning up after a pregnant woman is too much of a hassle.

Honestly. I've read the contracts for these shows and all the fine print, I was considering applying for The Circle because it looked fun, and it's intense. The contracts are strict, and that dissuaded me from it but nowhere does it say anything about having to deal with the living conditions that they force these people into. It doesn't tell them they'll be starved and sleep deprived. It doesn't tell them they won't be able to receive medical attention when they need it. It leaves out the parts where they'll be basically tortured for weeks because if people knew the truth, no one would sign up.

Love is Blind is the prime example of why I full stopped watching any and all "reality" TV, be it contest like this or the other sub genres of it. It not only is rarely depicting reality (because the editors will make whatever story they want by splicing the real footage) but it's also so often abusive to the few real people (eg. the non-show business people) that it's absurd to not think that they're gaining anything but pain from the experience. The Voice, America's Got Talent, Biggest Loser, even back in the day with Road Rules and Top Model, all of them were TERRIBLY abusive to all the contestants even _after_ they stopped filming. If you want what's good for people you shouldn't watch these shows because it's just monetizing people's short and long term misery.

I haven't given up on Reality TV but I am picky about the shows that I'll watch. At this point it's essentially down to Survivor, Top Chef and The Amazing Race. Each of which doesn't seem to be the sort to abuse their contestants with only Survivor truly pushing their contestants far beyond what they might experience in normal life, but they do seem to have a good support system in place for the players.

I just somehow grew out of my reality tv-habit, but I sure agree. Entertainment shouldnt hurt the makers of it, how am I suppose the enjoy something, when someone lost their autonomy over it? The more I learn, the more I loath the industry. And its so cheap to produce, sometimes I feel like tv and streaming services are just filled with different reality shows, one crazier than the last. “Watch as 10 contestants climb in a pot, that starts slowly boiling. The last person in wins a cool million. If they are boiled to death, so be it. Who will take the heat, whos the ultimate champion? Come and see it for yourself!” I fully expect to see that show in the listings someday. Or Gordon Ramseys naked cooking show in the remotest of jungles, where he has to hunt his ingredients and build his kitchen, with Bear Grylls.

I work for a women’s clothing retail company, we have around 10 stores and pretty large online presence. Each week all store managers are on a conference call with our owner/CEO. I’ve never seen a company with the level of on the ground involvement like this one. We got hefty raises last year and it’s just not in the cards this year… (I’ve never made as much as I do now so I’m okay with this) the CEO waited to tell us to our faces on Zoom and explained the situation and her action plan to get back to raises next year. She listens to our feedback WEEKLY no matter how small and is so involved and appreciative of us. She has even given us her personal number during tough company times in case we feel we have concerns that need to be addressed. I feel super lucky to be apart of this company. That CEO could take a few notes.
