As a former special needs kid I can confirm that teachers see you as much of a bullying target as kids do. Hell I've had more kids stand up to teachers for me than bullies.
Some teachers have no idea how to treat any special needs children. When my oldest daughter was in school she was on medication & had an IEP. Part of her IEP was that she did not have to make any oral reports but had to do a written one instead. One day she came home & told me her teacher had forced her to read her report to the class & had made a big deal in front of the other students about my daughter having to leave class to take her meds. I immediately called the school, got a meeting with the teacher, principal, & everyone else involved with my daughter's IEP. Long story short (too late, I know lol) that teacher left that meeting crying, got dismissed the end of that year & my daughter was transferred out of her class. Some teachers shouldn't teach, let alone teach special needs children.
I was called a reta*d for having ADHD for yearsby teachers. Now my school board is "celebrating" mental health. Wonderful!
For anyone reading Munkunstrap's comment and, like me, doesn't know what an IEP is, I googled it for us:
"The Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) is a plan or program developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives specialized instruction and related services."
@@tonichan89 yeah, my lil bro graduated with an IEP degree and is doing fine today. Luckily every teacher he had was nice, capable, and caring for every student. One of his teachers even came to my home for his birthday party. I hate that others get treated the complete opposite way, it's sickening.
i had a teacher who refused to follow the accommodations in my IEP in middle school so i dropped his class and took it online. he gave me dirty looks in the hallways for the rest of my time at that school. also the accommodation was literally just letting me use coloured pens to colour code my notes but that’s the hill he wanted to die on
I don't see many comments talking about it but that story of the poor woman who died really hurt my heart. Imagine driving home and then boom, that's it, you're dead instantly because some dumb teenagers were bored. I can't imagine being a parent and hearing that bs on a phone call. They said it'd be hard to charge them harshly, but I genuinely hope they do manage to.
She was only 20 and that hurt my heart to hear she died young due to stupidity of others .

where we live there was a time period (maybe 15-20 years ago) there where a lot of young boys were throwing rocks off overpasses and the same thing happened here, as well as other crashes. Feels like all young boys go through a throwing rocks phase (I know my younger brother did), but to actually go that far and not care about the consequences, is just sickening in the heart.

Hey Phil let me tell you about the kid in the vomit story so you know that it is actually worse. The young lad lived in my town and was babysat by my folks until the family relocated to Indiana. The reason for this was his father passed due to cancer. Forcing his mom to sell their home and moving to be closer to family for help. He is a very sweet kid who has issues communicating but loves to chill and watch curious George. He was probably my 80 year old dads best friend and they would hang for hours. Literally a kid that deserved protection above and beyond much less what those monsters did to him.

yup i live in the town and i have been in the school district my whole life. there has been something sketchy about the elementary staff for a while, if not the entire education staff. it is sad to see but they really couldn't care less about the students' well being and a lot of the teachers have some sort of power complex. its disgusting to see. im glad these teachers are actually getting criminally charged. he didnt even mention one of the teachers recorded the kid eating his own vomit. RECORDED IT.

My roommate got death threats on twitter for saying that arming teachers would only lead to more deaths because teachers are either overworked and underpaid OR violent psychopaths with anger and power issues and there's no inbetween. :/ People don't want to hear that...

when i was less than 4 years old, i went into foster care and my 'guardian' tied me up to a chair and force fed me rotten food because she mistakenly thought i left it out to rot. seeing these staff face charges for what they did and seeing your reaction to their actions makes me feel so much relief. Wow! That story is chillingly similar to mine. I wasn't tied up, but I was the same age and in foster case and I wasn't allowed to go to bed until I ate this dessert I didn't want and all I wanted to do was go to sleep, unable to stay conscious tired. It was full of overripe berries and pineapple, maybe rotten, but to me it may as well have been because it was absolutely not edible to me. These people constantly berated me for things I couldn't comprehend and treated me and the other foster children like problem children and purposely displayed how much better they treated their own children in front of us. The husband was a cop who had nothing to do with us most of the time other than to just be on his wifes side. They did a lot more than that too.
PSA: Every symptom Tate described is that of an allergic reaction. And just because at one point he had no allergies, it doesn’t mean they didn’t develop- which they very much can. Not saying this because I care about that man’s well being, but to let others know that you can develop allergies later in life that you didn’t have earlier in life. Happened to me and almost killed me, I didn’t realize I had developed an allergy to cold temperatures, well after being allergy tested and told I was only allergic to pollen and mold.

Context is everything, kids are terrible. They asked the kid nicely to stop gagging himself, when he kept doing it they said when you throw up I'm going to make you eat it. Then when all the kids laughed at him he got butt hurt and told his mommy all the terrible things the big mean teacher did. I'm guilty of doing something similar at school when I was a kid and he got fired.
Kids aren't dumb, I knew I could push teachers buttons as much as I wanted and I knew they wouldn't hit me. I bet that kid also has a pretty rough home life.

The story about the three teens being arrested for the rock throwing hits home because I went to high school with the girl who was killed and knew people who were friends with her. It was just a very surreal moment realizing I knew who she was. It’s good that they got who were the ones who did it because who knows if they would have kept going and injured or killed another person.
I really hope they get put through the ringer in prison for a good 20 years, they robbed that poor girls life for such a dumb fucking reason

Thank you for bringing up the Zooey Zephyr situation, it's completely ridiculous that they're being so blatant with their abuse of power to silence representatives. Just blanketly deciding "these people don't get their voices represented in the legislature".
I'd highly recommend reaching out to Erin Reed, who is directly connected to Zephyr, as she's been a key voice in highlighting these actions against trans people. She pointed out just recently in Nebraska there's a representative who is going to be "investigated" for "conflict of interest" because she has a trans kid. The GOP is making up whatever reason they can to silence critics of anti-trans bills.

Even years after school, as a disabled adult my heart continues to ache for disabled kids, they face a never ending upward battle and i remember situations, abuses just like that one happening to me. The fact it continues to go on, from the most extremes to the perfectly legal standards set in school insitutions that fail all kids, but especially already vulnerable students, its infuriating and heart breaking.

When I was a kid my family was driving and some kids threw a small log off an overpass and it hit our windshield. Thankfully no major injuries, but my mom had glass all over her that had to be picked out of her face and arms. It was truly terrifying as one minute you're driving and then suddenly the windshield explodes. I can only imagine a tiny amount of the terror that poor woman experienced. Those little scumbags deserve the worst punishment possible so they can suffer like their victim suffered as she bled out in that car.

cornell university did a large peer-reviewed study, of 56 studies, 52 indicated transitioning has a positive effect on the mental health of transgender people and 4 indicated it had mixed or no results, though none of them indicated a negative result
AAP did a study with transmen and transwomen with the mental health pre, during/introduction and post hormone/puberty blockers, the study showed positive mental health results
socially (not physical ie puberty blockers) transitioned children, in a study from AACAP, were found to have similar rates of depression to their peers who were not transgender, meaning if anything their mental health improved when it's easy to see that mental health of trans people is lower than average

Zooey Zephyr is the type of rep we need. She was calm, collected and able to give her words meaning to a movement. The fact republicans are trying to silence her is a damn shame. Them trying to say there was an " insurrection" is funny since they deny the one done on the Capitol .

The fact that half of a huge ass (claiming to be a "first world") country take republicans seriously is insane to me. Watching these people exist from across the globe is surreal. It's as if a cult has invaded a government, and nearly the entire country runs like a scam. Everything I hear about how things work in america (broadband, cable, food, infastructure, healthcare, housing, etc etc) runs like a scam. It's insane that more people aren't on the street.
The school thing makes me so furious. My nephew has special needs and ever since he was a baby, he struggles to eat certain things and often gags. I would be going to jail if I found out someone at school did that to him, no question. Evil people. I hope their lives are filled with horror and heartbreak.

If you've ever listened to various senators and representatives, what Rep. Zephyr said was incredibly mild. As a Montanan since birth, and someone who was a military representative of Montana...I'm sick seeing my state slowly turn into a state I can barely be proud or supportive of. Even to the point that I, a Retired Veteran, have not had one single response from my representatives about any questions I had about their choices. Even being sent multiple "How was our response" questionnaires from the state government after all their silence. Sadly, I'm looking forward to moving out of the state, and possibly not looking back.

Zephyr is my representative. It is insanely frustrating to see how awful she has been treated for doing her job. Republican law makers have not only silenced a representative, but all of her constituents as well. Said republicans have said and acted far worse during hearings and it's incredibly frustrating to see the blatant transphobia and apathy they have towards other people.
I feel like this is the next step of gerrymandering. They got away from silencing so many voices that they can pretend they're the majority now. With that power, they can now directly target representatives, silencing thousands at a time, much easier.

So why is it so important for children to transition?

The thing going on in Montana is extremely aggravating to see. Even though Zoey Zeyphyr does not represent me, she does represent some of my friends and family in district 100. It has been increasingly angering to see representative Zephyr get discriminated against, berated, and belittled by her colleagues in the house, all while being articulate, thoughtful, and extremely strong in this difficult time. I am extremely proud of representative Zephyr and her continued commitment to her constituents even though she nor they can be properly heard in congress.

I used to go to the school (and still live in the town) where the teachers were horrible to the special Ed kid. Obviously I was in elementary when I was there, but I remember always hating the older woman, Debra Kanipe, because she was overly rude to anyone she came across. When I heard this story from my mom, I wasn’t necessarily surprised to see her face connected to this, but more surprised that she was even still hired there. For a school district that I continually believe to be very good and I’m very thankful to attended, it was horrifying to see this happen.
The only person I can even somewhat understand was one of the onlookers who was only 24 at the time working with a separate company that the school hired to assist within the class. While there is very little excuse for not reporting something so disgusting, I can see how she might be afraid as those teachers seem to have been effectively her superiors.
As someone who calls Montana home, I'm so glad to hear someone covering the situation with Rep. Zephyr and the cowardly, bullying behaviour of the GOP legislature here before, during, and ongoing.

Rep Zooey Zephyr speaking frankly, without sugar coating, on the real pain they are causing, was a breath of fresh air.
As a Montana born and raised seeing this happen hurts so much. I grew up and questioned who I was and what I wanted to be. now that I'm comfortable with that part and being LGBTQ, it's painful. I was so happy to see her get elected but the entire Republican party is broken and confused. wanting to save kids and yet doing the opposite
I don't think it's ever been about saving kids. I think they want to stamp out all those that oppose them and are starting with the most marginalized and misunderstood group they can find. If they succeed with banning Trans people, gay people will be next.
I hope they can be pushed out of power before that.

I am a resident, and I find it dismaying to see how deeply those bigoted roots reach. But, it's also a breath of fresh air to see that this state isn't entirely stuck in that mindset, there are plenty of us who are willing to be open minded. I pray that Zooey can continue to raise her voice to speak for those who, like her, don't adhere to the strict black and white the republicans like to claim is reality.

My perspective, they do not think of what they're doing as wrong, but as difficult. Giving them the greatest benefit of the doubt, they see being transgender and being treated as transgender as fostering illness, and their measures are to course-correct. But this is just the gay "conversion therapy" all over again, that these people's narrow sense of reality cannot account for people just being different than they are, that they must deny anything to the contrary as illness and willful malice. They really would see us dead before accepting us as queer.

Zephyr is so incredibly brave and she has remained so calm, well-spoken, and dignified in the midst of all they're doing to her.
I was a "special needs" child in school and I'm now studying and training to become a student advocate, because stories like today are WAY too regular. Children being treated as less than human so that damaged adults can live out some sick power fantasy, or to meet the ridiculous demands of admin who only care of standardizes test results. Lack of funding all together and just a severe lack of respect and trust going both ways. Something HAS to change when it comes to our educational programs. We aren't training factory workers anymore and we need to adapt our learning modules from the industrial era.
@ARW1234567 a student advocate doesn't focus on one group alone, they are there for every student on the campus, though I do see the points you are making a lot of what you were talking about boils down go lack of funding. Sped programs have been so stripped down there's no other choice 90% of the time other than to force the school to withhold sped accommodations. The school I worked for had this exact problem, not enough budget for a proper special Ed program, so it meant a bulk of students with behavior issues were in regular classes. Have to commend Zephyr for remaining calm, cool, and collected in the face of abject bigotry. They want her to act out so that they can have an excuse to silence her, but she won't give it to them. I doubt that I would be able to maintain my composure as well as she did.
