    The relationship between these 3 is amazing. Seras and Integra being besties and the only main women in a world of men who can be themselves amongst each other. Alucard and Seras having a relationship beyond human understanding that can only be best described as love, family and mutual emotional security. Alucard being the only person Integra trusts as he, and later Seras(we need more material of Seras and Integra during Alucard’s absence), is the only one who always stayed loyal to her even when he returned and saw how old she became.👍👍👍👍👍🦇🦇

    It helps that Seras still has her soul. Proof of this is that she has a reflection. Despite having all the powers of a vampire, she is a human. Pip volunteering his life allowed him to maintain his own humanity, despite his death. Pip is exactly the sort of man that Alucard respects, even if he doesn't know it at the time. An absolute Chad. Especially for being a Frenchman.

    • @Nopeasaurus
      @Nopeasaurus Před 2 lety +24

      The reason vampires didn't have reflections was because back in the day they used silver for the reflecting part of the mirror. Most modern mirrors don't use silver anymore.

    Hellsing has a reputation as being a silly, over-the-top, ultra-violent thrill-ride... which it most definitely is! But I think it doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the subtlety beneath the surface, I genuinely believe it to be vampire fiction at its apex, a celebration of the genre, that asks some deep questions about the nature of humanity and monsters, all without sacrificing entertainment, its truly special.
    An excellent video! 👏👏👏

    • @princeoffools1058
      @princeoffools1058 Před 4 měsíci +1

      I think the reason so much of the subtlety gets lost is because so much of the story feels like it’s just trying to show you the next cool thing. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but it’s kinda hard to reflect on the meaning of humanity in world of monsters when I’m watching a literal mountain of zombies crush two armies at the same time.

  • @saitouhajime3

    You can also call Pip Seras's familiar, explaining another way that his individuality survived in her. He's able to protect her from Zorin's mind attacks, guides her through the fight with the Captain and is able to manifest to assist her as well, in a similar outline to how Alucard summons the Hound of Baskerville. He's a very integral part of Seras because he challenges her without the might of a vampire, or the authority of Integra. He respects her enough and tests her limits, only to find that he could settle down with her because he respected her.
    Seras is indeed the glue for the series. I agree with all your points. I compare Alucard and Goku in how they are teachers and people that nature those around them, but with the key difference that Alucard had more to gain and growth as a person to be had or regained. Whereas I don't see that in Goku. Probably a weird tangent, but I think it's a decent one to think about.
    This was well done, well thought out, and well put together.

    I kinda like how the OG anime handle’s the vampire priest scene, even if it’s very similar.
    The same standoff occurs, but Alucard almost directly tells Seras “hey I’m gonna shoot you through the heart, if you don’t wanna die, lemme turn you into a vampire”.
    It seems a bit more friendly than “hey you a virgin? Aight dope”. *BANG*
    “And BTW this vampire thing is sick, you want in?”
    It also handled Seras’ initial shock to becoming a vampire much better, as well a lot of her characterization. But, as a trade off, alucard is basically reduced to “badass McImmortalguy” and Integra gets very little time to shine by comparison.

    I wouldn't say that Seras put some extra effort into sustaining Pip's existence. We see that Alucard at level 0 also has people he consumed at his disposal. Sure they don't speak in those scenes, but it's heavily implied that Alucard consuming them dillutes his will which would mean that they still exist within Alucard to some capacity. I think Seras in this regard works the same as Alucard with the only difference being that Alucard has consumed millions and Seras only one.

    We really don't see Anime of such absurd high quality anymore, it's an outright extinct breed.
    So many layers of narrative depth in such a short series of episodes, cleanly presenting it's characters as competent without relying on cheap narrative tricks like fridge logic or "Because I'm just that good", nor presenting narrating events as if the audience was brain dead.
    It never fails to satisfy in action or presentation along the way as well, presenting the gritty detail of it's subject matter in no uncertain terms, even as it was forced to carefully dance around the technicalities of hyper-conservative Japanese law.
    Yet, not a single moment is wasted on padding or frivolity. Held frames are reserved only for the most dramatic or impactful moments and used to fully showcase the impact of it's reveals, even at massive production expense. It is by all means visual and narrative art, executed with shocking perfection, and on only the second attempt no less.

      Eh? There's plenty of crazy anime out there. Even during the 90s and early 2000s stuff like Hellsing wasn't normal. I kinda like how people always go "anime was cooler and wild back in the day" and name like 5 shows that were spread out over several years meanwhile everything else is safe and bland like majority of the stuff today. I saw a recentish show that had an alligator man eat a man head first and showed he had another dude already living inside his throat and then spat him out asking "what did the guy in there say?".
      I also like how you say only on the second attempt. Most series don't even get a second chance. Yeah there's plenty of sequel series and reboots now but way more shows based off of manga and books don't get a round 2. It's actually astronomically rare if you take the whole medium of anime into account.

    That might a dumb question, but...I am dumb myself, so...

    • @Ozunoda
      @Ozunoda  Před rokem +8

      It's questionable how consensual Alucard turning Seras into a vampire was; being suspiciously manipulative on Alucard's part, who could have dealt with the situation in a way that didn't mortally wound Seras, and him being ambiguous as to what the 2nd option, other than death, Seras could take entailed.
      So that's point one: she didn't just become a vampire, she became one as the alternative to death and without really knowing what she was getting herself into. The major point, however, is that after becoming a vampire she consistently refuses to feast on anyone's blood, innocent or otherwise. This may unearth Alucard's guilt, or exacerbate whatever guilt was already there, for having either condemned her to the same monster fate he has been living or, in refusing to drink blood and awaken her vampire powers, become his slave.
      Only when blood is willingly offered to her from Integra's finger - as another sort of blood-pact, not of slavery but of mutual benefit - does she attain that true vampire status, and she got there without stooping to the actions of a monster.
      It's not being a vampire that makes one a monster, it's the actions one takes, whether they are vampire, human, or machine.

    Really majestic video. You voice is perfect for this type of narration, the choices of the tracks were perfect too, which obviously include the choices of the pics. Quick question, do you think that Walter was only jealous of Alucard's immortal life? Because barring his pride as a Vampire Hunter, the only reason fot Walter to do all of this would have been his desire to prove himself superior in a fight. In fact he couldn't have desired the power of Alucard because Walter proved himself to be stronger, so Walter really threw away all of his life for proving that he can beat him huh.. guess that he did it, but he failed to kill Alucard

    • @Ozunoda
      @Ozunoda  Před rokem +3

      I think Walter was more skilled than Alucard in combat, and so his jealousy of Alucard's immortality twisted into feeling he was more deserving of it than him; unconfident whether he could equal Alucard as a mortal man, his prime years long gone. He knew he was missing out on what immortality would chiefly provide him with: a forever endurable, youthful body. He and Alucard had fought side by side for decades by this point, and through that time an aging Walter has had to look on as his rival stays the same. I dunno how old Walter is, but it in some ways comes across like a midlife crisis, where he's come to fully realise his mortality and that his body isn't capable of what it once was. He just wants to always be at his absolute best, and immortality gives him that. When he was payed with his pseudo-immortal body, Alucard was the obvious opponent to test himself against, finally answering "would I have all along remained better than this monster, if only we lived on a level playing field".

    I love this video, and am sharing it with friends of the show, I will have to disagree on your take with the major to a slight degree.
    I personally took it away that he hated Alucard, for as you said, sacrificing his humanity, and as he, and Alucard said in the show, it takes a man to kill a monster, the Major just looked at the task of killing Alucard, from another angle, as he already came to the conclusion that "taking his head, like one of the teutonic knights of old?" was doomed to fail. And took it upon his own way to slay the monster without selling or sacrificing his tarnished soul.
    also from a cultural period perspective, he was a German of the post WW1 era, and held the most utter disdain for 'defeatists' which he views Alucard as, someone who just gave up worthy of nothing but his loathing and contempt.

    the scene where anderson dies, and gives a speech about alucards crying always stuck with me
    the series always provoked questions about what it is to be human, or a monster but in that scene it was the primary focus, not secondary to the action

    Genuinely curious I'm halfway through right now and I totally understand why you say Sera's is the actual main character. Would you also say that in say Dragon Ball Z Vegeta is more of a main character than Goku? Seeing as how he goes through much more character development and growth than Goku.

    • @Ozunoda
      @Ozunoda  Před 2 lety +7

      I haven't watched Dragon Ball Z so I won't comment on that, but when it comes to Hellsing: I think Seras does actually go through 'more' character development than Alucard does, partly because Alucard is, as we see him in the present, at the final stages of his development (having already gone through a long history that we only see snippets of, such as his defeat at the hands of Van Helsing).
      However, whether a character goes through more development than others isn't indicative of whether they are the main character. At least in the way I mean it in the video, even if Seras went through less development than Alucard she would still better suit the main character title, because the development she does go through better suits those archetypes.

      I would say Gohan is the main character of Z. He is the main focus and has the most character growth. Dragon Ball Z as a whole is about Gohan taking Goku's place as Earth greatest warrior and his unique struggles in doing so.

    Not really a fan of the Japanese dub (something if a rarity for me). Hearing a bunch of Brits, Germans, and a Scottish guy speaking Japanese is weird.
    On another note, Hellsing is surprisingly deep on the character study. Despite all the flair of monster mayham, it's a great character study on people who are in power and what they do with it. Alucard wants a good fight, Integra wants order, Millennium wants violence. It's interesting.
    Integra Hellsing is probably my favorite female anime character. Her never say die nature is what makes the show for me she's like the end result of what Hollywood tries and falls to do with female characters.
    There are narrative reasons for why she' the way she is. She's cold because she's the only woman, besides Seras, there, she's the first and only female head of the family, she's also the master of Alucard. So her being a cold hearted "girl boss" is what makes narrative sense. She's supposed to be this way because she has to be.
