      In ancient times some cultures (mostly from Middle Europe/Balkans) practiced "vampiric burials". There were many practices involved in this process, like:
      - cutting head off, only to put head between foots,
      - mentioned stake to heart, or chest damage in general,
      - binding of hands, specially with aforementioned head between foots,
      - putting coffin upside-down,
      - putting heavy weights no body/coffin (like big rocks, etc),
      Archaeologists are finding from time to time this type of burials, so there are some articles at this topic.

    Something I think you left out is how a vampires must be in the coffin that hold the dirt of the earth that they were born and died in. The creator of hellsing, Kouta Hirona, has actually that’s the secret of how Abraham Van Hellsing defeated, Dracula by destroying all of his coffins, that included the 16 he sent London, when he planing to invade, and the rest in Romania, do to not getting his vampire sleep he became too weak to fight at his full extent(another reason why he won was because Dracula didn’t know how to use his powers until he was captured by Van hellsing and the Cromwell infarction was something he was trained to do, the creator actually described Alucard experience at hellsing was “was like being train like a dog to tricks, know how to shack, and not shit on the floor”)even Walter explains this to Seras because she refused to drink blood. Also I know in the books it said Dracula can turn to a wolf, but like think in hellsing it meant to be a dog because Walter calls it in their fight “The black hound of Baskerville” that and it reminds me of Gut’s beast of darkness and it might suppost to be Alucard own inner beast because the creator said, that it’s not a different entity or soul because Alexander Anderson purge all of his souls and was Alucard inner familiar.

    The Millennium Vampires are described as “two bit imitations”: the ranked officers (Luke, Zorin Blitz, Rip Van Winkle) have only one thing that sets them apart from the stock standard vampire (which is what the other Millennium fodder represents: enhanced speed, basic regeneration, enhanced strength) and even then those things come across as cheap gimmicks, take those away and they’re nothing special (Luke has enhanced speed, Zorin can create illusions and Rip simply has a musket with magic bullets).

But to kill him proper he'd need to cast out all of his millions of souls, which he almost did when fighting Walter. Only the Valentine brother was left and it saved him.

    It's interesting to think about that idea you brought up of the fact that no vampires have *actually tried* crossing water, and so they might be able to if they tried...
    this idea is explored in one of the Discworld novels "Carpe Jugulum" in which a family of vampires (something odd on it's own as vampires are usually solitary predators) have decided to "go modern".
    and the father is introducing nuanced ideas such as telling them to eat normal food and secretly adding small amounts of garlic so they develop a tolerance.
    or he forces his kids to *memorize* the shape of each religious symbol of all major religion, so that they won't cower in fear to the sight of them, claiming that religion is just superstition anyway. =]
    and he has kinda the right idea because it does actually work to some extent. and his goal is to overcome all of their weaknesses eventually.
    The vampires in Discworld in the first place are really interesting.
    they can completely reform from a single speck of dust, and a single drop of blood.
    There's a character of a vampire that works for the newspaper as a photographer. and in his spare time he tries to develop ways to have a "flash" effect (using enraged salamanders) even though whenever that happens he crumbles to dust (as it produces frequencies of light that are close to sunlight or something).
    i'll quote from an article about him:
    "The inherent problem with being a Vampire Iconographer is that flashes of bright light will cause Otto to shriek in pain, and more often than not reduce him to a pinch of dust on the floor. Thanks to a suggestion by William de Worde, Otto finally solved this problem by wearing a vial of blood around his neck, creating an automatic reconstitution mechanism -- whenever he crumbles to dust, the vial breaks, reconstructing Otto. The entire process happens within a matter of moments, allowing him to pick up the picture he undied for before it hits the ground. "
    because that's how dedicated he is to his passion of photography. XD

      @pliskenx51mm83 Před 3 lety +3

      I think he stores additional souls inside the coffin too. When he enters level Zero it opens aboard the carrier from inside the Blackbird and it leaks the same energy and multiple red eyes Alucard himself does when entering his release states. Eyes are considered a window to the soul. I have always theorized why Alucard has so many eyes during his transformations, I believe they are the physical representation of the millions of soul trapped within him. When he absorbs Schrodinger all of his eyes start to close showing they are losing their own self awareness and by extension so too is Alucard. I imagine, even though its never mentioned, the many, many eyes probably increase Alucard visual acuteness by leaps and bounds on top of the third eye of the mind he already possesses. This is all my head canon though, I just pieced it together from observations.

    Another enlightening (and hilarious) video, Ryan. Vampires are super hit or miss in terms of their presentation in recent popular media (especially Western media, I truly believe Twilight singlehandedly set back Vampires but who doesn't?) I truly felt that Hellsing was a perfect amalgamation of high octane action, a seinen target audience, and a genuine respect for Bram Stoker's original work. I often reread the manga - this is a deep cut but I still have the original scanlations from the Maximum 7 team that pioneered the early days of online scanlations (they also did the entire run of Trigun too, which I feel is right up your alley in terms of tastes! -) on a thumb drive I've had since friggin high school.
    I remember around the time the Hellsing Ultimate OVA was announced my friends and I damn near died. The original TV anime diverged so damn hard I was afraid we'd get burned again, but by the time the 3rd or 4th OVA released the manga had ended and my fears were laid to rest. 10 episodes of a damn near perfect page-to-screen adaptation with very few and if not welcome changes in regards to pace and timing. Studio GONZO went *off.* Even the dumb animated shorts on the dvds inbetween episodes were straight from the tankobon publications of the original Hellsing manga run. Each episode was about 6 months apart, released over the span of 6 years from '06 to '12. Truly a fucking love letter to the series.
    Now imagine if *Berserk* got nary a fraction or a *sliver* of the love Studio GONZO was allowed to give to Hellsing.

I think it’s worth noting all of the occult imagery associated with his character: the seal on his coffin, on his gloves, the verses on his pistols, the seal above his tomb, the illuminati eyes that cover his body... he’s been augmented in some way. In the Helsing Anime, Alucard's (and later Seras's) regeneration & "demon" are them calling on the trapped "souls" of their victims. Seras's "recovery" after losing her arm only happens after she "eats" the leader of the wild geese.

    • @tau-5794
      @tau-5794 Před rokem

      Rather, it is an inherent ability to them because they are true vampires, Seras only couldn't do it before because she hadn't drank any fresh blood. As long as they are not "killed", true vampires can regenerate serious wounds, even including decapitation as seen with Alucard when he fought Anderson using the nail. The souls are just spare lives in case they are injured in a way that would kill them.

  • @Hei_Darkfire
    @Hei_Darkfire Před 3 lety +18

    There's a couple of things you left out. First, there's a point where Integra mentions that the normal weaknesses of decapitation and staking through the heart was removed from Alucard because the Hellsing family had modified Alucard as a vampire heavily in the time Alucard was with Hellsing using occult knowledge (She mentions this during the first encounter with Anderson. So Alucard is basically been modified into one of the most powerful vampires in the world by Hellsing over the years. It is also worth noting that Integra mentions to the Wild Geese that they should put a stake through the vampire's heart, burn the corpse, scatter the ashes at a crossroads, and to consult Bram Stoker for more details. Now this could have been a joke on Integra's part, and it probably was, but it does imply that at least some of Bram Stoker's methods for killing a vampire do work in the Hellsing universe. Alucard is just the exception to the rule because Hellsing basically modified him to not be able to be killed by that kind of ability.
    I also noticed you didn't mention his ability to create familiars from people, and specifically he has the ability to summon all the people he's eaten to fight for him. I assume this is meant to be included in the "consuming blood" part, but I think it's worth mentioning that he was able to summon those he'd consumed blood of as familiars (which we see mostly when he's in his full power form). And while we're on the blood consumption, it's also shown that Alucard can manipulate blood outside of people's bodies (though there's no point where we see him manipulating blood within people's bodies so we don't know if he can or not), so it is snow that he has blood manipulation to some degree. There's also points where he's shown to have telekinesis abilities to some degree as well like when he knocks back two guards of the Queen without actually touching them. And although it is not explored, it seems like Alucard has the ability to control darkness and insects as there are multiple points (mostly when he's regenerating) where he seems to manipulate the darkness and collections of worms (or centipedes? I have no idea what kind of insects they show masses of at times). He also seems to be able to shapeshift into other human figures (you did mention shapeshifting, but Alucard seems to be able to do more than just change into animals and bats). Now how much of this is the result of Alucard's modification by Hellsing or how much is normal vampire ability is unclear.
    Now... I know some people aren't going to see some of this as legit, since I'm sure some of this is probably Anime only, and before anyone tries to say I'm going by the old Hellsing anime, keep in mind I am going by Hellsing Ultimate's anime, nothing I've said was taken from the original Hellsing anime as that's a whole other beast entirely in most cases.

That would mean that if one were to have an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and they were a vampire, then all they would need to do is drain geniuses and researchers and occultists. Imagine what kind of implications this would have if Bram Stoker Dracula had that ability. All Dracula would need to do is drain Johnathan. Also I believe the rice thing is because of Irish Mythology. Fairies, or Fae, are said to have that same OCD-esque weakness. Hellsing never explained what are the differences between the process of 'siring' (turning a human into vampire), ghouling (turning a human into ghoul) and soul devouring (consuming the soul of a human so it an be used later). We know that only a virgin of opposite gender can be sired, but let's say a vampire don't really need to sire anyone yet and just want to take their soul.
    In my headcanon, it worked like how siring works in White Wolf tabletop RPG. A vampire drain their desired virgins dry, then injects a small amount of their blood into the bloodless corpse.

    this was pretty thorough explanation of vampires in the hellsing universe but there are a few things you missed like how alucard got his vampirism from drinking human blood while being human (this was referenced a few times in the anime as a way to become a vampire by taking the essence of another human) another thing is that in the first episode of the anime seras who was recently turned into a vampire was given a mirror to look at herself and she could still see her reflection
    theres also how vampires heal which you touched upon in this universe, while advanced healing is possible after a vampire drinks human blood the only way in order to heal consistently is by consuming more human blood, in fact that was why in the anime major wanted alucard to use level 0 in order for all of the blood he's absorbed in the past 500 years would be out of him making him extremely vulnerable which is why both anderson and walter took a shot at killing him but they failed you can tell he was weaker because he healed slower than normal and would protect his chest as much as possible during the fights even going as far as creating a decoy to fool walter, also alucard himself mentions in the first episode to the rogue vampire after the priest "you haven't learned how to turn your body to mist or heal your wounds" which implies its a learning process as well and not something that comes naturally (exceptions being seras in the mansion after getting blinded and having a arm ripped off) another thing i can think of is the weakness to sunlight alucard said to seras very specifically that "you chose to be a creature of the night so you must avoid the sunlight unless you want a slow and painful death" the last thing i also remember wanting to mention to you was how vampires are made while everything you said was true you just missed the fact that newly made vampires are still in control by the vampire who made them until they drink their blood which is what alucard was encouraging in the first episode. but outside of those few bits this was a good video i appreciate the use of real world mythology to explain the vampires in the hellsing universe

    As I understand it in Hellsing a vampires power is tied primarily to how much they have abandoned their humanity. Someone like Alucard has essentially gone full "lol humanity who needs that? Pass me those orphans" while Seras clings to her humanity and refuses to drink blood for most of the story.
    Alucard revels in what he is and has little regard for humanity. While Seras sees herself as a human until the final acts where she starts accepting her own inhumanity.
    So Alucard is able to freely hang out in sunlight and ignore the whole sleeping in a coffin packed with the dirt of his homeland thing which is also used as the loophole to cross oceans. Which is why he's able to chill on that plane while Seras has to be stashed in the cargohold in a coffin (presumably packed with english dirt)
    Basically the less human they perceive themselves as the more powers they get and the more weaknesses they get to ignore.
    So how does this play into the artificial vampires? Tough to say. Could be theres a hard limit for them. But it could also be that their inhumanity of the soul/mind is less genuine. Rather than genuinely turning their back on their own humanity they're instead putting on an act, which falls apart the instant they run into something genuinely inhuman.

    As such he is composed of shadow-y demonic energy as well as the blood and souls of those he has consumed over the centuries. Naturally this energy has no fixed shape, allowing him to shapeshift, form shadow constructs out of himself like the hound of Baskerville, or melt into shadows to travel through them or even walk through walls.

In addition, Alucard's capacity to stand back up may SEEM infinite, but I've heard what's actually happening is that if he should be killed by a means that is actually lethal to vampires, he can sacrifice a soul in his inventory to face his death for him, freeing him from the afterlife because his toll for death is paid.

But Alucard had a goal in Bram Stokers Dracula and being defeated a by human wasn't one of them at that time. scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/83269/what-were-dracula-s-true-motives-in-going-to-england

    I'm only ~4 episodes or so into Hellsing Ultimate right now, but I'm here, as I do, devouring everything I can while I wait to be able to keep watching later. Alucard is so insanely cool, and, though I've never been interested in vampire lore before, I'm fascinated with him and his lore. The only vampire thing I've ever mostly completed before this is the Twilight books, and I only did that because the movies came out when I was in college and my girlfriends wouldn't stop recommending that I haaaad to read it. I read it, it's not that good, there are no hot takes here. Anyway, I love Hellsing so far, and really don't think I'll come up for air from the lore or character studies for a while.

    As far as I know, the idea of vampires obsessively counting things comes from their immortality. After a while, they become so bored that they just count things to fill the time.

    Actually the reason Dracula is does not die in sunlight is because that weakness wasn’t introduced until the movie Nosferatu and vampires existed in folklore to make sure parents got their children baptized or else when they died they would come back as vampires and kill them and vampires being nocturnal had to do with the fact that humans don’t see well in the dark and so you become more aware and you become nervous and ready for danger so the idea of going for a walk at night becomes terrifying if you believe there are monsters in the dark but the day feels safe because you can see clearly.

    The legend of undead or unholy creatures having to stop and counting / picking up cereal / rice / weat is common.In Romania there are folk tales of devils need to pick up weat that is thrown on the ground before they can pass.As the stories go, brave men could go out and see actual devils in some nights, but they would have to have a bag of wild weat and throw it on the ground behind them as they walk to stay safe.

      Those aren't really proper vampires since they are more an actual species that in some ways far surpasses what vampires were capable of....then again the Pillar Men were amped up version of their own people so maybe they count as vampires as well. hard to say.

    weird thing, it might've just been a mistake, but only full-fledged and artificial vampires don't get reflected in the mirror, after all, seras did when she woke up after just getting turned into a vampire in ep. 1, but luke didn't when he was attacking the mansion in ep. 2

  • @kestrelswatchingchannel

    I know this is a few months late, but I had a contribution that I thought was cool.
    So with the whole "Vampires can't be seen in mirrors" thing, a theory came up that it didn't actually have to do with vampires not having a soul, but with how the mirrors themselves were made.
    Mirrors back in the day were commonly made using silver as it was a highly reflective surface. I don't need to explain the whole thing with vampires and silver since you did in the video.
    Nowadays, mirrors are commonly made using aluminum. So in theory, vampires would be able to be seen in reflections.
    Biggest counterpoint I know to that theory is that because werewolves are also weak to silver, they also should not be able to be seen in silver-back mirrors.
    The reasoning for that might be that it's a combination of silver-back mirrors and the vampires not having souls, but I digress.
    It's still cool to consider.

  • @DStrormer
    @DStrormer Před 4 lety

    Alucard's transformations are his familiars, souls that he's consumed basically. The wolf you reference is a dog called Baskerville (obvious reference is obvious). It's complicated, but I'm not sure you'd ultimately equate that to the transformation into a wolf, bat or rat. Transformation into mist would likely line up with his discorporation though.

    I mean Dracula in the novel was stabbed in the heart with a kukiri knife and had his neck slashed with the neck wound being the killing blow from Quincy Morris. It's also stated in the novel that if vampires don't sleep in the dirt of their homeland they cannot truly rest and regain their strength. Basically they can't sleep and become weaker overtime. Overall good video though.

  • @moonlight1393
    @moonlight1393 Před 3 lety

    Hey! So, about the vampires having no reflections--back in the day, like Victorian Era, mirrors were always backed with silver. As you've stated yourself, silver is bad for vampires and most monsters of the night. So silver backed mirrors would never cast a vampire's reflection. But nowadays, aluminum is used to back mirrors! Although, some modern mirrors still use silver backing, most would show a vampire's reflection!
