Rorschach is the best character because he's a mess of contradictions, hypocrocies, virtues and vices, who is introduced as looking down on the vast majority of New York city as degenrates beyond saving, and yet at the end of the tale, he, and he alone is the only one who cares about justice for all of them. Its a great, thematic arc for a incredibly flawed yet somehow likeable character, even if it didnt involve too much direct character development to get there. Sometimes characters dont need to change, you just need to put them into a situation where they have to actually stand up for what is right and wrong when the going gets tough and you have to sacrifice for it. Also the fact that the invasion of afghanistan is ultimately what destroyed the ussr in real life tells us that Ozy entire scheme was unessesary. There wasnt gonna be a nuclear war, cause the soviets didnt want armageddon any more than the americans did. Ironically enough, real life validated Rorschach. The fact the americans didnt compromise and funded the afghans against the soviets ultimately led to their destruction despite how such an action could have provoked a nuclear response.

The prequel left me confused about how The Thing actually works. It creates a double from any sample it gets, or gets inside you and starts replacing you from the inside taking over? Because they say it can't replicate in-organic matter. So by that logic it needs to be the taking over infection from inside, because if not you'd have a bunch of the thing people running around naked. But that then contradicts the test with the dental things. If it takes over your body the dental pieces would still be there...

I would like to point out the similarity between the mark of the beast (the sing of the antichrist according to The Bible) and the brand of sacrifice being both placed on the sacrifices' forehead. According to Revelation 13, the symbol "χξς" will be placed in either one's right wirst or forehead. I believe the resemblance with the brand of sacrifice is relevant and obvious.

Great video! Some thoughts from a random fan, maybe of value, maybe not; Focusing on Carpenter’s versions, I always, since first viewing in the mid 1980’s on tape, FINALLY with VCR (nobody wanted to take me in ‘82 and I was 14Y.O.…) was that it was amazing and smart. I absolutely loved it. You pointed out the very things that did it for me as well, including but not limited to the intelligent construction of situations and directing. The way it’s filmed without a clear leader at first, the way they used the original story, all the players are great, the pacing as they learn about their problem is perfect. The effects…. I mean, in the 80’s? Jesus, I was squirming in my couch a few times. I also feel a bit vindicated and jealous at the same time with all the attention the film gets now, with excellent videos like this and many more decent ones and waves of new fans building up…. when I was PLEADING for people to give Carpenter’s masterpiece a chance decades ago. No, I wasn’t alone, there were other fans and some critics gave it love, but it was rare hearing compliments about it let alone being included at all whether peers or strangers discussed movies. I want to yell at the world; “I told you so!”. The first film- I also love this film because it’s actually older yet better than countless monster movies that followed. The Hawkes’ trademark overlapping dialogue (you pointed it out!! Bravo!), is a good touch, and though it feels a bit forced and staged back then, I know it’s mostly because it was extremely rare (as you mentioned) in films prior. The third film drove me nuts because I love that actress M. E. Winstead (relatively new and young yet solid in everything I’ve seen her do); I loved the concept of a prequel; (always had great curiosity about that situation, which compliments the second film and story); and being new technology, had the chance of making it look amazing. I couldn’t stand the very things you complained about either, plus the way they omitted the stealthiness and intelligence of the creature used in the second film. What predator, anytime or anywhere, roars with announcements that it’s trying to stalk prey? An idiot predator. I also wanted to see if that creature was actually a stowaway, parasite picked up from somewhere…. and ALWAYS thought that should be the case whether intended or not by Campbell or filmmakers. Back in the 80’s upon first viewing, I figured it was the reason for the crash on Earth in the first place- the original beings trying to get rid of it caused chaos. Finally, I actually found the paperback including “Who goes there?” back in the 90’s while snooping around book stores in northern California, after the military stationed me at Travis AFB. I also found “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” AND “We can remember it for you wholesale” during those years of hunting for things I found cool yet most didn’t care about back then. It was disappointing many years later when using the internet to learn more about Campbell being sort of a jerk-turd, especially knowing I thought his story “Who goes there?” was genius. And I still do, actually. Sure there are better written, far better written sci-fi… but there SHOULD be because that was written BEFORE so many other authors were able to learn from each other! That long ago, limited science to work with, and coming up with something that terrifying? Holy sh-t! It unofficially means we should always give everyone a chance unless imminently dangerous. They might be trouble, but I take a look at their work for something good that came out of it. Thanks again for the great video.

This film shows the stupidity diisplayed by scientists who should know better and shoukd be protecting humanity not poking around an alien organism which should have been thermited and turned to ash before it came to life . Quarantine protocols shoukd have been in place to stop any possibility of infection by destroying the alien . They have no protocols they just blunder into the danger and place the whole world in jeopardy! Idiots !!

  • @jasoncaldwell5627

Everything about the prequel was awful. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is horribly miscast as the lead- a decision that reeks of studio meddling. She's supposed to be some hotshot paleontologist but she's only like 21 years old? And, naturally, she's "Hollywood beautiful,". Part of the Carpenter movie's charm is the believable actors that, for whatever life events, found them manning an isolated research post at the end of the world. All of that is tossed in the prequel. There's a pretty big continuity issue between the prequel and Carpenter's movie regarding the spaceship. In the Carpenter version, we see video of the Norwegians using thermite to get to the saucer- not so in the prequel and not with the ending of the prequel where they crash the ship again.

I would love to see another movie with Mary Elizabeth Winstead character "Kate" arriving at the Russian camp and then they head out to the American camp and find Childs & MacReady and the rest of the American camp in the way that they found the Norwegian camp in the original (Carpenter's version). From there the paranoia can start over again with Childs and or MacReady being the start for the members of the Russian camp.

This is my favorite horror film of all time. Out of the 3, this is number 1, 2011 at number 2, and the 50’s version at 3. I have the original story and enjoyed that novella. There was a short damage story that was told through the POV of the creature. 36:11 I was away from my phone at this part and thought Donald Trump was talking when it was JC.

I agree with some of your picks and disagree with some, it's kinda 50/50. For me, Escape from New York is a masterpiece while movies like They Live and Big Trouble are just okay. In the Mouth of Madness is amazing though. I would rank it as one of his masterpieces. It's neck and neck with Silence of the Lambs as the best horror movie from the 90's.

I did play the game as a kid, and it was never a masterpiece, but far from a catastrophe. It was a tad more ambitious than what it could reasonably pull off, but I won't hold its lofty aim against it. For example, the idea of your crewmates possibly becoming assimilated without you knowing and having to administer tests to them in order to find out, or use the test on yourself in order to make them trust you, it all sounds good in theory. However, the points at which random characters can get "infected" are pretty obvious, and some characters are outright scripted to turn into monsters at certain points, even if they have been tested and proven to be human immediately before the script trigger. And the usual issue of certain bosses being pretty broken, with one of them being completely unable to do anything to you if you stand directly below it, allowing you to kill it at your own pace without a care in the world. Such was the gaming world before day one patches. The plot is not particularly interesting, but entirely inoffensive. Spoilers to follow: Your character, Blake, is sent in to check on Outpost 31, and finds Childs' body. Some crewmembers get infected and the baddie, Whitley, is introduced. He leads some sort of mercenary team and wants to go all "Umbrella mode" on the Thing, which they call the "Cloud Virus", I think. Turns out, Whitley knowingly infected himself with a sample of modified Thing-cells that gave him its abilities, but allowed him to keep his mind. It also made him flame-resistant. So Blake has to stop the monsters running amok, the military goons, and prevent Whitley from getting off the South Pole. It is, I think, heavily implied that Whitley at this point is long dead, and his imitation just claims to have kept his mind. So in a way, it's the Thing using Dr. Faraday's research to improve itself by lessening the threat that fire poses to it. Dr. Faraday was this geneticist that Whitley had modify the Thing. He was modelled after and voiced by John Carpenter himself. MacReady also makes a surprise appearance at the very end, alive and well.

Bleach is pretty fuckin elite. I've been a fan for ~7 years so I'm somewhere in the middle of new and old and I agree on the anime not being the best adaptation (pacing and weird changes namely, filler is a non issue imo) while I also sympathize with the lack of ambience and gravity to some moments in the manga by comparison. Bleach has the best soundtrack in anime and it's a crying shame to miss out on that, and I just really love the sound design all together. Ichigo is my top dog MC, even over Guts, because of how relatable and down to earth he is; he doesn't wanna be some God King, he just wants to do right by his people and became the man that could've saved his mother no matter the personal cost. I could spew on and on about the series tbh but I digress

You lost me at Vampires. That's actually a good movie and John Carpenter's hidden gem. Saying Ghost of Mars is better is just an insult. I would rate it way below Starman. James Wood is badass as the leader of the vampire hunters and Thomas Ian Griffith is quite intimidating as the head of the vampires. That massacre at the hotel is shocking and terrifying.

I also enjoyed this saga. Also I agree, the way people treat filler as something that should be disregarded is absolutely ludicrous. When I watch anime I don’t treat it like some kind of homework assignment crossing out information that new to this version. I just enjoy and take it in as It’s being presented. Writers, voice actors, and artists put in that work and these ingrates just pretend they don’t exist just because it wasn’t in the manga? I mean without filler what would we have? Even more months of dry spells and nothing as we await for the manga to finish the next couple of chapters so the anime could continue completely unaltered? I am and forever will be greatful for everything and I mean everything the artist, writer’s, composers, and voice actors did to give us everything they did. Filler is no different in that regard.

Cant believe endo made this like 23 years ago, amazing manga which covers a wide range of topics still as relevant as ever. Seriously never thought i would see japanese media covering topics like religious tensions in india. the cast of characters being so diverse really allowed this manga to showcase so many different perspectives im still astonished that a piece of media like this could come out of a homogenous country like japan. Does anyone have any reccomendations to manga that are similiar ? the only one that comes to mind is black lagoon
