ORLANDO, FLORIDA 32867 - Hudba
Paul Weller is the most honest and untouchable artist in the crazy world of popular music. His soul is not for sale.
I think this was the album where Paul Weller established his legend as The Modfather and a prime inspiration for the Britpop generation.
Finally you have discovered one of the best singer songwriters out there ?
Nice request whoever suggested it. I love this song and Paul Weller always brings it live. Didn't notice anyone else coz I was too busy noticing how fine Paul was looking, Wooo.❤ "Uh Huh, Oh Yeh" is a cool song -his first solo single. Also. "You Do Something To Me" is a lovely ballad. 😺
Yes yes. Nobody talks about his self titled solo album. I listen to it more than any other. Amongst Butterflies. Above the Clouds, Into Tomorrow and Bitterness Rising are tracks so good that if another band wrote and recorded, they’d be celebrated as godlike. Not Weller. Just another days work for the modfather. Pure class. The 1992 solo album deserves way more attention.
I only have Wild Wood, Stanley Road & Heavy Soul by Weller but they're all brilliant. A fabulous period of his career.
I agree, these are his best work, "Stanley Road" is brilliant, and I love "Heavy Soul" guitar sound, and overall sound also!
All great of course. But, if you haven’t picked up his 1992 debut solo album (self titled) you won’t be disappointed. It’s probably my favorite of all his solo stuff. It sneaks up on you rather than hits you with huge bangers. It’s just solid from start to finish.
Paul Weller 100% great!
My favorite artist of all time. The Modfather!
Thanks for doing this one, JP! This was one of my requests on the video survey 😀 A storming live performance from the early years of the Later With Jools Holland music show. You can just feel the energy coming through the screen. Weller entering his Modfather phase. The whole album, 'Wild Wood' is superb and well worth exploring as are the ones that followed, 'Stanley Road' and 'Heavy Soul'. Can also recommend his more experimental 2008 album '22 Dreams' too. By the way, that's Steve White (the drummer in the Style Council) playing behind Weller on this performance. Whitey also plays on the 'Wild Wood' album itself.
ps - I think the audience on that show are asked to blend into the background. In more recent years, they've been asked to wear dark clothing, so when the lights are dimmed either side of the stage, they don't detract from whatever band is playing. There's a host of classic performances on Later with Jools over the years. Bands play in the round, surrounded by their peers, so there's always the pressure to bring their best performance! That said, I've seen Weller play live many times and he's always full of energy.
At last The Modfather! ♥He is a great, great musician, singer/songwriter. "That's Entertainment" and "You Do Something To me" are a must, and "Stanley Road" is an almost flawless album, to start.
I think I've recommended this song, but not the video so thank you to whoever did! Paul has a fantastic voice with that soulful warmth, and he always puts on a great live show. I'm still bummed I never got to see Style Council live, but have been to several of Paul's shows. He has so many great songs from ballads to rockers like Sunflower. I bet you'd really enjoy a lot of his catalogue and I would love you to hear Above the Clouds, The Strange Museum, You Do Something to Me and Fly on the Wall.
This was a live performance on an excellent show called Later... with Jools Holland (of Squeeze fame as well as solo artist in his own right). The show has produced so many fine live performances from up and coming as well as established artists, one of my favourites was KT Tunstall - Black Horse and the Cherry Tree - her very first live TV performance, and incredible solo performance - highly recommend her. For good quality well recorded liver performances, this show has been around a long time with an enormous back catalogue to choose from. Introduced me too so many new acts, like Ragu Dixit and Hanni el Khatib
Very nice! Pulling influences from the '60s blues, always love Weller's touch & tone. Peace & Love.
Big Jam, SC, Weller fan. You just cannot go wrong with *anything* Weller.
Great song! Really liked The Jam then Style Council in the 80’s so guess it’s time to hit the old musical rabbit hole!
Fantastic! This is one of Weller's greats. Most of his solo albums are worthwhile. He doesn't reinvent the wheel but is just a great rock songwriter. During that time his drummer was long-time fellow Steve White who had quite a punch, but could also veer off into a jazzy style.
The proper starting point. This single & the Jools Holland performance were the big Rock comeback after a decade of Cafe Pop & Acid House. Weller is the definition of prolific with a _deep_ solo discography post-1992. Everyone has their fave tracks. More:
"Who Brings Joy"
"You Do Something To Me"
"Dragonfly"
"Love-less"
"Blink & You'll Miss It"
steve white is his drummer…was his drummer during his days with the style council also…his brother alan white who’s drumming is shall we say less comparable to his brothers managed to secure the oasis drummers job after the departure of tony mccarol…just incase no one pointed this out yet 😊
Weller is so so underrated. And his band is so fucking tight. They can hold their own with anyone.
Thanks, Justin, for featuring a live performance by "the Modfather". That video is from the "Jools Holland presents" TV show in the UK.
I enjoyed seeing and hearing Paul Weller with The Jam in concert about 40 years ago, and saw him again in concerts in 2015 and 2017, all three times in Vancouver. He is always a dynamic live performer, and he continues exploring different facets of that soulful side of rock and pop music. Wild Wood and Stanley Road are classic albums, and 22 Dreams has some great songs, too. There are plenty more albums of his to explore if you want to do some listening, and a number of his live performances over the years are available on CZcams.
The jam- down in the tube station at midnight is proper good.✌️
Outstanding track from the Modfather of Blue-eyed soul. Wildwood is a perfect album, IMHO, with this as an opener. 🌻
This is when he really came back to us. Pure passion and fire n skill. Brilliant live !
Later with jools Holland performances are always good as artists play in the round amongst Their peers. It is unique, there are other bands watching this being played.
I love wildwood it’s a great album
Thanks for this. More Paul Weller please. Wildwood is a fantastic album. I wouldn’t be mad if you did the whole thing.
I love wild wood (the song) so much! It was quite a hit here in the Netherlands
Love Weller's work... Truly a "Jam" as you mentioned... ESPECIALLY his marvelous work with THE JAM. ("Check out "Man In The Cornershop," "Funeral Pyre," "Tales From The Riverbank," and "Liza Radley."
REQUESTS: BEULAH "Emma Blowgun's Last Stand," THE SUGARPLASTIC "Soft Jingo" or "Montebello," (If you love XTC, you'll LOVE The Sugarplastic)... GUIDED BY VOICES "Space Gun" or "Surgical Focus"... THE MINDERS "Frida"... Cheers, JP!! (from another "JP"...)
Good stuff. Moving forward to his next album after Wild Wood, a favourite track of mine is Out Of The Sinking. Very infectious.
Thanks for the reaction to this great song. Surely reminiscent from Nights in White Satin, but with an irresistible groove. If you like this performance, you'll love Woodcutter's Son, from the same program (Jools Holland). I think it's from 1995 or 1996. I strongly recommend you dive into the Wildwood Album, one of Weller's great achievements. Stanley Road is also great and in the same soulful vein. But his entire discography is top notch.
Great choice. Bluesy, rock and attitude while keeping it polished. Maybe the lady in the back was going to have to follow this act. I can't remember what videos I rec'd on this poll... indeed I don't remember the poll but it was likely awhile back.
Drummer is awesome it must be in the genes as his brother drummed for Oasis as well.
Guys, you’ve no idea. Live he was always blistering. I saw Weller giving it maximum in the Jam days. Absolutely brilliant live!
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Rock out. Great stuff.
Paul Weller always held a special kind of attracion to me. I knew the guy from The Jam and Style Councile, but as a Heavy Metal fan I always kept an eye on him, like, what the fuck are you doing out there, I need to keep an eye on you. And I liked the guy. Had a beard at some point and had a speak with him after some sort of concert in Germany in the mid-nineties. He was okay, the beer wasn't; remember I'm from Belgium, right. We know how to ferment a brew. My girlfriend sucked the foam off his lips and then later went down on her knees to the visage I don't even want to describe. But we survived.
I think the Wolverhampton gig is legendary, a little piece of perfection.
Footage is from BBC’s Later with Jools Holland which might explain the lady in white. There were (are?) several stages set up and the acts take it in turns to perform. Audience is in the middle. Lots of pressure performing in front of other artists and it’s possible whoever that is was also on the show. Definitely a great rabbit hole to go down. Pretty much every big act and hundreds of smaller ones have been on it over the years.
The groundhogs -cherry red.... Might want to check that out at some point.
MORE FROM THE MODFATHER PLEASE! MORE WELLER MORE WELLER MORE WELLER MORE WELLER MORE WELLER MORE WELLER MORE WELLER MORE WELLER! Try "Have You Made Up Your Mind" or "Echoes Round the Sun" from the 22 Dreams album. Featuring Noel Gallagher from Oasis.
Love this kind of descending riff with crashing chords slashes with emotional personal lyrics… I think he misses her. Love that Casino.
Ever since The Style Council's Cafe Bleu came out, always have been one of my favorite albums.
Bassist is Yolanda Charles. Check out her CZcams channel. Amazing bassist!
I thought that was Yolanda! I've seen her play with Squeeze too - that was a real fun show.
I LOVE PAUL WELLER!!
intro-ed with the style council and i actually prefered them to the jam (yeah, whatevers, i put "walls come tumbling down" against ANYTHING by the jam). paul's 1st solo LP was bloody AMAZINGGG!!
just more paul weller, please! and i wouldn't mind if you covered the afore mentioned "walls..." by style council, js 😏
thanks, jp! ❤
I grew up with punk. My 2 fave bands: the Clash and the Jam. I called those prog punk. Good job on the recommendation and the review. Rock on.
Try shadow of the sun from the same album, there is also a wonderful live version of it on CZcams
The Mod God, skol!!
paul weller is not the modfather. he is after Paul mccartney the best songwriter in england.
Paul Weller is such a great artist, I likes him a lot!
Really recommend you to listen to his album “On Sunset”, I think it’s a masterpiece! The album reminds me a little bit of progressive rock, the first song of the album especially.
Please check out Paul Weller - Kosmos. It's fire
Tuco tight lol!
Kick out the style bring back the jam -- TFF
More weller please.
Very Jack Bruce vocal wise
Above the clouds ?
My boy, don't forget my request... Seru Giran "A los jovenes de ayer", the best Latin American band ever.
Good, rather listenable in a repeatedly kind of way.
However, I always get the impression that Paul Weller is a serious, very intense sort of bloke. Like, if you met him at any point in normal life, he'd wouldn't crack a smile and he'd tell you he can't stop long to chat because he's got some urgent (and very important) business he needs to get on with elsewhere. And then he'd leave.
I don't know... he might be the most warm-hearted, open, friendly, approachable person in the world, but this is the impression I'm always left with when hearing anything by him.
He's actually very funny! Most of the daft ideas in the Style Council videos were his, for example. Very serious about his music and politics, but definitely up for a laugh and ultra supportive of young musicians.
Quite the opposite - A couple of decades ago, he was recording at the same studio as my old band, so we bumped into him quite a bit and he'd often come over and have a good chat while we had our breaks. Even helped us unload our van!
@@FuzzWoof Your and Jeremy's reply before you were good to read, giving me a better idea of what the guy's like when you meet hm. Thanks for that!
That performance was a real coke-fest...
It was ok. But that mid break was weak, and half the chorus sounded like lifted from Nights in White Satin...
You are tone deaf 😒
@@Katehowe3010 I've got tons left. My lemons like the Tardis, bigger on the inside.
@@Katehowe3010 Aye. It's only banter 🙂
