Paul Weller puts out new records every year or two. He has an enormous catalog. Brilliant performer.
Many years ago, my wife and I were listening to this song in the car, with our two year-old toddler in the back seat. My wife said “oh, I love this song”. Months later, we played this song again. My song shouted out loud: “it’s mommy’s song!!”
Great story, Manuel! Thanks for sharing.
Wild Wood is a phenomenal album, you could pick any track from it and be impressed. Weller is exceptionally talented and it just amazes me how little he is recognised in the US.
Unfortunately true. But never too late to dive into his stuff. - Greg
Weller is the man that kept the flame burning, the link between the 60s British invasion, ( beatles , who, small faces ) and the 90s bands( stone roses , oasis etc) proper ledge
This track is on my absolute favourite album of all time ever.....tread carefully gents 😀
Weller is an extreme talent and pioneer. I check out every new album he releases. I was lucky enough to see him live in LA during the Wild Wood tour and again about 10 years ago.
Love Wellers work full stop but his Early - Mid Nineties Output for me really cemented his Legacy as a Recording Artist. His self titled Debut...Paul Weller felt as different to the Style Council as that had felt to the Jam previously. Then came the Expansive more coherent almost moment of clarity album Wild Wood & its introspective follow up Stanley Road evoking his Childhood memories of Growing up in Woking (Surrey) are all Brilliant and well worth checking out. Jools Hollands(ex Squeeze Keyboardwizard turned tvMusicshowWizard) show btw is Recorded at Twickenham Studios West London a venue known for its excellent accoustics.
Yeah, sound seemed really exceptional.
Great memories of this album - saw Weller live 3 times on the Wild Wood tour, and many times since. It's probably my favourite work of his. Somebody who knows about guitars can correct me, but I believe he played a Rickenbacker that has that distinctive sound (like The Kinks, Beatles, REM). The drummer Steve White is a legend (brother of Oasis drummer Alan). Fantastic request.
I saw him in 97 at Manchester Apollo, Noel Gallagher joined him for 3 or 4 songs as well
It's an Epiphone Casino that he's playing in this period, although he had played Rickenbackers for many years before that. I saw him on the Wild Wood tour twice too - absolutely incredible!
Great review. Paul Weller is a legend.
Whirpools end from jools holland 96 is my favourite weller live performance ever. Full string and brass section. Drum n bass interlude is unbelievable and the guitar interplay with Steve craddock is brilliant. Worth a look.
Will do! Thanks, David.
fuck yeah that's a tune
Couldn't agree more. I keep going back to it. Possibly my favourite live performance of any artist ever.
Thank you so much for choosing this performance. It's one of my all-time favourite TV performances of Paul Weller (and I remember, as a little kid, seeing his first TV performance in 1977 with The Jam). Also this performance was the one that convinced me that he'd got his mojo back and was making great music again. The energy, in particular, that he's putting out there in his singing and playing is incredible. And I'm really glad that you liked it too!
The modfather as he's known is in my opinion the GOAT. Dive into his back catalogue. You won't be disappointed. Lovin your work over here in London guys. Keep up the good work.
Will do, John. Thanks!
can't argue with a single word of that well put the Modfather he is
Try broken stones, and wild wood, 2 really good tracks.👍👍👍
For people of a certain age, ie me, we couldn't believe it when he broke the Jam up at the height of their fame, to go and form the foppy Style Council! Over time the Style Council has grown on me but I, like most, love it when when he performs Jam tracks at gigs. He's not quite Van Morrison like that, but for a while, wasn't far off. I'm sure you must have reviewed the Jam, but if not, you won't go wrong with Down In The Tube Station At Midnight. It is one of the all time great songs and he wrote it when he was only 19!
Have a listen to English Rose by Paul weller, from the days of speed album, live acoustic version,so so good 👍
Dude..if this is the start of The Jam journey you are in for such a treat..i envy you..must listen tracks..When your young, Strange Town, Going Underground, "A" bomb in Wardour Street, Start, All around the world, In the City, This is the Modern world, Thick as Thieves, Billy Hunt, David Watts, Thats Entertainment, Ghosts, All mod cons, Precious, Beat Surrender, Eton Rifles, Private Hell, Smithers Jones..a lyrical and musical tour of pure quality..take note..The Jam are about to become YOUR band..trust me.
Thanks for the suggestions!
That drummer is amazing...played with the Style Council too.....he's about 15 here .
The Wild Wood album that this tune is from is great, I used to be able to play the album title song on guitar, not for a while though! Paul's next album 'Stanley Road' is fantastic too.
Fantastic song. Above the Clouds is my favourite of his though. No reaction videos of that masterpiece.
Wild wood is one of his classic albums, but only last month he released his 16th “Fat Pop” which hit Number 1 in the UK. If you have the time you have a mountain of classic Weller you could get through.
The song Sunflower itself is actually about 'E Kysp' which was highly addictive low grade heroin from SE Asia that flooded Europe and the UK in the mid to late 80s that carried a sunflower logo on it's packaging.
Amazing how some songs seem to be love songs, only to be about drug. Or perhaps love for the drug. - Greg
did not know that but that line im afraid to say why just became a little clearer
It’s that 10538 overture riff by ELO again or is it Dear Prudence speeded up?
@@MrRolandgent weller did say he wanted to write a song like dear prudence and the opening riff is just a tone higher.
@@1878kevin I didn’t realise that, love this tune although it nagged at me for ages just what that riff was
God prays to Paul weller each night
Ah, yes. Love this comment!
Just sayin' , the pure energy and emotion of Weller in this performance would have been my first comment, not how good the drums and guitar sounded. While being decidedly not The Jam, it has that energy and edge. 110% for this performance.
That's a fair statement.
Americans just don't get Weller!
You wnat to see some angry Weller, watch Peacock Suit live at Southbank.....
The whole album was good, as was this track. When it came out it was well listened to by people, who were at that time, not really enjoying modern music. The only problem with it is that it did not add an inch to creativity for music as a whole.
Interesting.
