Starfield was stuck in development hell for the good bit of 6 years, no progress was made.
Todd was just too busy to handle his dream game so at some point he handed it to his right-hand man Emil Pagliarulo the incompetent doofus.
And so they spent too much money and time to just outright cancel Starfield they decided to just make do with what they got and released a basically mediocre rpg.

01:00 I think its remarkable that something like Enderal which was built on Skyrim's engine by two people working in their bedroom is infinitely more interesting than anything Bethesda is capable of creating. People talk shit on the creation engine a lot but I don't think its even the main problem, its like their games are designed by committee to be as bland as possible. I can't think of a memorable NPC they've written since the effing Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion.

Mainstream devs like to focus on objective things like higher quality textures and whatever the new light transport method that 90% of players will need to turn off by default because subjective things like narrative and gameplay are too hard to grasp and may take more time than predicted to get right.

ONE guy can cook up an incredible inventory/HUD mod in 1 year, but Bethesda with 400+ people, 7 years and unlimited money just copy paste the UI from the last game. Starfield also has recycled animations and sounds from Fallout 4.

I don't even think the issue is the "chosen one" style story they go for. It's just that it's so boring. There's no heros journey. You don't ever feel like you're building your power and legend. It's "here you are. Oh look you're a mundane person. *BAM* Now you have to save the world"
Let me build to that. Ironically a game that does it right is RuneScape which is ironic given it's an MMO. You start off helping a cook make a cake and doing very mundane things but at the end of it you've slain a dragon. It FEELS like you're building things. That's the issue with Bethesda games. They don't build you, you just are

I agree that. Lets take the BOS questline in f4. You come in and help Danse and after one quest youre already a fucking knight, something that BOS members have to work years for no matter how fucking good or genius they are, it needs to be earned. Now i dont think i need to go on a grind spree of 30 quests to get my knight title but at least let me prove myself PROPERLY to get rewarded somehow. And its like this with all the ufcking factions, you barely enter the faction and you get rewarded inadequently. Oh btw im dying and ure gonna become the institute chief now(wtf did i do to deserve that???), first they set up father as this calm and rational scientist and now hes a fucking nepotism freak and/or mega retarded?? I dont think the BOS questline in FNV is anything special either(sure we can talk here about lack of time/budget etc) but at least you feel more appropriately rewarded compared to what youve done, you get the power armor only at the very end of the questline when youve fully joined the BOS as a member, it makes SENSE.

2:00 speaking of not committing, it dawned on me that in starfield they basically tried ripping off a lot of popular sci fi works. The UC is star trek, Freestar is Firefly, Neon is like a mini cyberpunk with an Arasaka at home faction, House Varunn is Dune with a religious holy war and everything, the MQ seems to be an amalgamation of Star Wars and 2001(?). The synth story would be good and it reminds me of Prey by Arkane Austin. You play as an alien and are fed memories of a scientist who had a former girlfriend and brother. You work on a space station that's actually a simulation designed to test whether you can develop emotions and feelings towards humans in disaster situations. All your actions on the station, whether you helped or killed people, and the manner in which you did so, are highlighted at the end. It's an absolutely amazing game. However, Bethesda seems to be running on old ideas that are poorly executed.

i'm pretty sure this is exactly what they did for FO4's story, you are a synth, i have played the game many times to come to this understanding, i will admit it took me some time to consider it because the game makes you really feel like you were the only survivor in your vault, but when meeting Dima in far harbor, he brings up the question of memories and how your memories could be manufactured as for some reason you only remember the day the bombs dropped with no memory prior.
i think the synth story is intriguing as it's never been like this before, not only this, but Shaun tells you releasing you was an experiment of sorts, meaning you are not really his father, you are a representation of his father, the memories may have been real but like the synth Nick Valentine, these were downloaded or uploaded into your mind, or the synth body and everything from the moment of waking up was all programmed into you to follow the bread crumbs back to him.

You know, I have observed the gradual increase in bethesda's reliance on radiant systems and proceduralism every single new game they put out (granted procedural design was always part of their games, in different implementations and scales), but what really grinds my gears in starfield is not the barren landscapes and repeated flora and fauna assets across thousands of planets, but the fact that there's a total amount of like, 3 interior layouts for outposts and caves. I was p*ssed when I entered a cave in a godforsaken planet and it was the EXACT SAME CAVE you find Andreja in the main storyline.
Like, why they didnt do procedural interiors for caves and outposts? I really wouldnt mind all that much if 90% of these interiors werent all that brilliant if at the very least they were different from one another.

One of Bethesda's issues is your choices don't matter the majority of the time. Fallout 4 has you siding with 3 out of 4 factions to get the same ending. Only siding with the Institute gives a slightly different ending.
As for the voiced protagonist I get why some dislike it. On the other hand as many people like having their character with a voice. What we need is some way tell your character what to say and have the character say it via something like text to speech.

To see how much they massacred the lore of the universe and just casually saying through Pete Hines “we don’t really give a shit lol”(paraphrasing I know, but that’s basically what the dude said), and how much thought and creativity were in the West Coast fallout titles, it bothers the hell out of me, because the entire story, settlement system, factions, lore, the WRITING, the weapons and armor, it’s all just a spit in the face by Bethesda themselves

to be honest that seems more like a low iq idea, because that would mean they did this to destroy their own reputation, when they were attempting on doing the opposite.
they want to make money, but if their product is shit due to incompetence on their part, they end up losing out on that money because the update screwed them.
i think it was a mistake to not test the update first on PC, because from what i hear, it works perfect for all the console users, there are some PC users who have noticed improvement's, but the vast majority are feeling the pain of this update causing the game to be worse.
bethesda are more than likely being lazy, they don't beta test themselves so they turn their user base into the beta testers whenever they release an update.
of course, they never tell users they are beta testers, but this is what it more than likely seems to be.

They kind of correctly elevated it/made it the focal point of all fallout related marketing and merch in the real world, but they don't shove it down people's throats in the actual games/try to do the stupid thing and canonically justify the character/overexplain it.

Dude did you play Fallout 4? Even before I tried Far Harbor where they blatantly explored the possibility that you've been a synth this whole time, there was this question in the back of my mind that there was at least a chance my character was some kind of avenging angel ala Luv in Blade Runner 2049, sent from beyond the grave to take the place of Shaun's dead parent, and ultimately to take his place as well - and to find my own place in the world of the future which was mine to shape. It's meant to be a lingering question. The possibility is right there, and the game is actually written well enough to not smack you in the face with it (at least until Beth listened to someone like you and shoehorned it into a DLC). That is precisely what makes the game good and leagues above any other Fallout plotline. There are subtleties to the game which most people simply don't pick up on and so they think it's bad. Yes, there's no page in your pipboy telling you you're evil, and this is a GOOD thing. You have to actually stop, take a step back, and look at what you're doing to realize when you're being evil in this game, and you can be extremely evil, trust me. Even rebuilding the minutemen and doing all kinds of good in the Commonwealth you can be incredibly evil.

While the game has its merits (best gameplay in the series hands down), its unmistakable "distinctiveness" sets it apart from its predecessors imo. Even if someone came up with the perfect narrative fix, this unique character would still remain. Whoever is currently in charge of the IP should really consider bringing back some of the original writers, even if it's just as consultants or advisors. They'd bring valuable insight into the franchise's lore and tone that is very much needed.
