  • This is a tutorial for beginners on how to paint miniatures. If you are new to miniature painting or warhammer, this guide will help you start this hobby so you can paint some great models yourself!
Miniature painting is a hobby where you are in control. That's why I love it, you can fix anything you want and do whatever you want. Even though the sky is the limit when it comes to painting models, there are certain techniques and certain knowledge that will help you get started on your way. Learning these fundamentals in this complete guide to painting minis will be useful for sure!
This tutorial should be a great resource to not only help you get started on your miniature painting journey, but to also paint to a very solid standard. It doesn't matter if you are painting just for fun, for a game or competition - some techniques are usable for all of these cases.
I have selected several miniatures to show you variety of techniques - there is a very round miniature without too many details (Charizard). Then there is Emelda from Warhammer quest: Cursed City, which has perhaps too many details. The last miniature is spider man from Marvel Crisis Protocol, which is a bit round but also has some details. All of the mentioned techniques should cover the start of your painting journey. If you are looking for a way on how to start painting miniatures, this is indeed THE tutorial for you!

Agreed. I’m just getting into the hobby because I miss painting on canvas. Well… my house, my painting area, and my time are much more constricted from before. Not to mention the price of canvas is 400% more than it used to be! If I wanted to paint a bunch of postage stamp pictures, it would be great, but seriously, who does that?
Thank you so much for the comprehensive tutorial. It makes a world of difference!

You've managed to show the good old fashioned basics here that are so easy to lose with everything else these days (oils, inks, airbrush, even contrast paints etc...). So well done, and thank you again.

I've subscribed to your channel because this particular video (I've watched a couple others) is essential, in my humble opinion, for people wanting to start painting miniatures, maybe not as a full-featured tutorial but as a very wide guide of principles and (for me the most important and valuable part) giving a clear image of what are you going to find when you start painting miniatures.
The only think I miss in this video, which can be seen in some of the takes like the belly of the Charizard, is miniature surface preparation to make sure all surfaces are smooth and regular so relatively large areas of single colors with no texture do not reveal flaws in the manufacturing process. I've been painting for a long time (not as well as you, not by a VERY LONG shot, you're a very good artist) and one of the things that clearly improved my results, since I was not able to spend a lot in high quality miniatures, was surface preparation. In short, filling and sanding surfaces.
Of course, now with 3D printing the surfaces are usually very good already, and for some high quality injected models even mold lines are barely visible, but I have spent quite a good amount of time preparing the surfaces of lesser quality miniatures so they appeared much better than they were at first.
I understand that this video could not stop at those details, and I've seen your miniatures and you do some surface preparation or you are AN EXTREMELY GOOD painter and can disguise some surface flaws and blemishes with your paint (I can't, I'm not that good 🤣), so don't take this as a negative criticism of the video, which is GREAT, it's just it's something I missed and that took me some time to learn when I first started painting a veeeeery long ago.
Nice video, really, I liked it VERY much 😊

Thanks for the tips. I paint Nolzur minis for D&D with Army painter stuff and use some Citadel metallics which Army dosent have. Im also using the Citadel mini holder to some degree. And whys theres a lack of brass metallic colors? Gold, silver even bronze and copper are easier to find. Brass color FYI is the color usually found on trumpets, tubas etc. Copper with zinc gives brass, copper with tin gives bronze.

When it comes to painting bases i tend to do the model first and base after when it's for army painting with the texture paints, since I find it to add some more "realism" when you accidentally get some (read, SOME) of the texture paint on the shoes and stuff which kinda makes it look like there's some dirt and shit that's been kicked up on the feet/boots/whatevs while, you know, fighting an other army.
