I started with craft paints. Although I paint much better now,...with all the plethora of custom colors the one skill I lost is actually mixing shades, highlights and special colors. As I started with only 10 paints and now washes I use to mix a lot to get what I wanted. Now I just go for what’s available.

I've been painting on-and-off for more than 25 years (more off than on…) and whenever I tried to teach a youngster the hobby I always faced the same problem: where to start, what kind of materials to use. And that's because during the many years I've been on the hobby, I have hoarded quite a lot of different tools and paints, and you cannot say to a newcomer "hey, spend more money than you actually have in order to have the bare minimum tools to start, and if for some reason you later don't like the hobby, tough luck!". This approach, with cheap materials, easy figures, etc. is the way to go. Thanks a lot for this video and the many others in your channel.

Even the more advanced videos I didn’t feel overwhelmed- but it makes sense you can use every tip and try everything on your first model - you gotta just play with the paint and get a feel for what’s it’s like to put it on and each mini after that gets better.

I wish I'd gotten into the hobby sooner, that I wasn't so afraid to mess up as I was. I am so glad to be trying this myself, and have been enjoying every minute. I may have only painted a contingency of Templars and a giant wolf so far, but I am already planning my next project.
Thanks for having such approachable and easy to comprehend newcomer friendly videos. I am happy to say they gave me that final encouragement to jump in, and I look forward to how things go.

As someone who painted the entirety of Imperial Assault using these techniques, this is good stuff and very valuable to new painters.

Hey, Brent, I have a Pupil-tip: use a cocktail stick, dip the point only a bit in the paint and hit the target with the point. Real easy method, works always for me.

Oh thank god. As a 50 year old, trying miniature painting for the first time in decades and seeing a simple video to explain simple things is brilliant. Apart from the advice on caffeine - that's filthy talk.

I absolutely love this; those books and characters look like they'd be perfect for my great nieces and nephews, and the minis look like some great first "real" prints to try out on the resin printer I got for Christmas. Thank you, and keep on making these awesome videos! You're a huge inspiration!

I like the style you've chosen for the minis! The vibrant, one-per-part scheme matches the sculpts nicely.

Dar Brent, Thank you very much for your videos. I've recently taken to painting miniatures after years of fighting the urge to plunge into the rabbit. I've been watching lots of your content and have learned a great deal from you already. I've painted three so far and they all look phenomenal. Thank you for everything and I appreciate your work and content. I hope to keep watching & learning from you for many more rotations

  • @crestfallenwarrior6996

Thanks for this. The pros out there make it look so easy , and with all the techniques it can get pretty complicated. I needed to see this!

Hell yeah! Super great beginners guide! Not everyone has the confidence or the cash to get miniature paints while starting out.
Thank you for creating a guide on how to make use of cheap and more widely available paints to use for mini painting!

I'm not a beginner but I love this kind of tutorial. Thanks for doing it.
I feel like if I had found this tutorial when I begun I would have had the level I have now faster.
It's a great thing for beginners.

I decided I wanted to start painting minis because I want to paint my monsters from Monster Hunter World: The Board Game. This isn't the first video I watched, but it is absolutely the one that has helped me determine that I won't be overwhelmed by the fear of "screwing up" my minis and not painting my monsters. "Just start painting." Thanks Brent
