  • Brett Archibald was on a surfing holiday with nine friends but had fallen ill from food poisoning during a 10-hour journey along a stretch of water known as the Mentawai Strait in Indonesia's West Sumatra province. He had gone to the side of the boat to vomit when he became dizzy and blacked out. When he woke, he was in the water - the boat already 10 or 15 metres ahead of him. Breat was left stranded in the middle of the Indian Ocean in the dark, with no hope of survival.

As always, excellent script (takes effort that), narration, and supporting photos and video! And you’ve got the volume of the background music at the right level now. I was trying to work out what these stories reminded me of and then remembered - National Geographic documentaries of the 70s and 80s! Keep going and consider being a narrator for ebooks - you have the voice for it. Greetings from Switzerland.

I think it's different when I'm listening through a sound system I have connected to my CPU compared to people who are listening through headphones, TV speakers, etc. Also, personally, I like the bg music kinda high. But that's me. I think there's a happy medium so everyone can enjoy it. You're exactly right about relaxing if stranded @ sea & about the body's natural buoyancy. I "discovered" this while as a kid swimming. Also, if you take a deep breath & hold it, then lay on your back, because the deep breath fills the lungs like a balloon, you'll definitely have even more buoyancy.

I remember when this happened it was covered on Surfline, it was shocking that he survived that long. But if there were a place this type of ordeal is survivable its in that strait. The water is fairly calm and very warm. I have been on the same trip (different boat) as him, and at night to get to the bathroom you have to walk outside and next to the railing to get to the bathroom. I remember thinking how if you fell off no one would know. I made sure to be very careful.

Great comment. Yeah, seems like that water was very ideal. And him being a surfer and an endurance athlete, definitely helped. Seems like all the skills he acquired led to him surviving. Thanks for watching!

Western tourists have come to expect that others consider their safety but that's not a thing in Indonesia like a lot of other developing countries. Not just in natural locations but in cities as well. For example if someone in a Western country saw an exposed electric cable hanging off a pole or the side of a building they wouldn't think it's probably a live wire but that would be a mistake elsewhere. Nice sidewalks often have a manhole cover completely open. Don't text or make selfies while walking!

Why tf did they eat the rancid food in the first place?? Why go up on deck if you felt like you were going to black out? A lot of people in these stories seem to lack all common sense and self preservation.

I would like to make videos if I got to go on a boat in the ocean but I would always be wearing a life jacket. And if they have AGPS on them you bet your ass somewhere and I don't care if it doesn't look cool. I'm from Louisiana we all know how to swim. But I'm NOT TOO COOL TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET (WITH GPS) & SATELLITE PHONE. MAYBE 2 SATE PHONES & hand crank generator. & water purifiers.
