Climbing Siula Grande presents a range of challenges, including unpredictable weather, crevasses, steep ice and rock faces, and the inherent risks associated with high-altitude mountaineering. Siula Grande remains an iconic peak in the world of mountaineering, known not only for its physical challenges but also for the extraordinary stories of survival and determination associated with it. For Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, their ascent of Siula Grande would become one of the most remarkable survival stories in mountaineering history.
Joe and Simon began their ascent of Siula Grande's west face, adopting the Alpine style, carrying minimal supplies with the aim of reaching the summit in a single, relentless push. There would be no intermediate camps, no possibility of a helicopter rescue, and no margin for error. Their three-day ascent through harsh weather conditions, snow, and plummeting temperatures was, as Simpson described it, "the most precarious, unnerving, and dangerous climbing I'd ever done." Upon reaching the summit on a sunny afternoon, they reveled in their achievement, taking in the breathtaking views and the profound sense of accomplishment. Dawn broke on Day Four, and they believed that the most arduous part of their journey was behind them. Leading the way, Joe Simpson encountered a formidable obstacle on the ridge-a vertical wall cleaving through its path. Upon withdrawing the axe, he lost his footing and tumbled down a mere 20 feet. However, the impact forced the bones of his lower right leg through his knee joint. Simon understood the direness of the situation, realizing that this was as dire as it could get, and they would be fortunate if either of them made it out alive.

People who criticize Simon for cutting the rope have likely never had to make any kind of really tough decision in their lives. Theyre the same people who will say that someone's circumstances are the results of their own good or bad choices because their lives have never been affected by having to make a decision where both choices suck. In this situation, these decisions are already made even before the climbing starts and all parties know the deal and assume the risks. Simon had no reason to believe that Joe either was still alive or would live because he knew he couldn't help him out of the crevasse at that point. The only choice to be made was whether he wanted to join him in that hole (and almost certainly in death). People worry way too much about what others- whom they don't know, never will and don't value their opinion anyway- think of them. It's great both made it through and were able to go on and enjoy their lives.

@@roderickflint1330 I will agree with you on that because he did spend the night and could’ve still tried to see if he was alive but after experiencing what he did he probably thought there’s no way he could’ve survived. I do think everything happened for a reason because most ppl would have died experiencing this and they both had the will to live.

Anytime a mountaineering story mentions “alpine style” I know that things are going to go off the rails.
Joe’s survival story is one of the most awe inspiring that I have ever heard. I can’t believe he was able to get himself to base camp with broken bones and no supplies after being abandoned by his friend. And they burned the poor guy’s clothes so he couldn’t even get changed. Smh, Joe is a bigger person than most. What a great guy. As for Simon- I understand why he cut the rope. But the fact that he didn’t even call out to Joe to see if he was alive when he reached the crevasse. That is my major issue with the way he handled things.

I look forward to each and every story they cover! Keep up the good work and we will keep watching! Joe Simpsons desire to live enabled him to persevere through impossible circumstances! There is no better example of this type of desire than this story! We all have mountains to climb, in this story the decision to cut or not I am sure was not done in haste. Luck was on both sides of these two people for they both survived. First the determination of making it down the mountain and second determined to climb out of a crevasse. Many would condemn Simon for cutting the rope, but if he felt his partner died, he needed to survive. Fate had other plans Simon and Hawkins stayed the night and Joe came down and was rescued by both of them. Everything happens for a reason, like the narrator telling this story. There is a reason you tell the stories that you do. It is not to pass judgement of the players it is to tell what had happened; these two men made a choice and, in the end, survived because of their will to live. If people have had to climb a mountain in life, would they have the will to survive. Life in itself is a mountain with valleys and peaks and yes, crevasses, yet can we as humans climb out of this. Many do not they stay in the abyss, and many do to become productive in society. Even though there are others who condemn them for what they have done. The will to change and survive is proof of the fighting spirit of self-determination that is alive in all of us. The choices we make may determine the outcome.
