- For Witold Glinksi, his Siberian expedition would be the ultimate test of survival. He was sentenced to serve in a labor camp in Siberia. From the moment he arrived at his Siberian gulag, shackled and in chains, Witold began meticulously formulating an escape plan. He was acutely aware that failure to escape would result in certain death. Their immediate objective was clear: escape Russia and reach the border, situated 1,600 miles away to the south. Their journey would take them through the Siberian tundra, south through Lake Baikal, one of the world’s largest freshwater lakes. Further south, they would need to traverse Mongolia and the treacherous Gobi Desert. Further south through China, they will have to trek through the highest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas to reach freedom of British-controlled India. An almost impossible expedition of more than 4,000 miles on foot through diverse terrain and climates.

I can’t wait for the end, “If you’re ever stuck in a Gulag, make sure to wear layers…”
😂😂😂 exactly what I was thinking
"Try to find a prison guard who is sympathetic to your cause, or at least willing to accept a bribe."
Keep an eye out for maps and hand knit socks. Wait for a storm and confused guards to make your escape.
😂😂😂 Hilarious. You guys are awesome LMAO
These comments are gold! I heard each one of these comments in his voice, which makes it even funnier 😂😂😂
As someone who does long distance backpacking all I can feel is complete humility for what these men did and endured. I have the finest gear, maps and supplies they had next to nothing but incredible drive and the will to live. This was a very moving story and what is truly possible. Thanks for sharing this story, it truly needed to be told and I will always remember it, especially when life gets hard. Take care
Drive and will to live alone wouldn't fill their stomachs or warm their feet. Witold's knowledge allowed them to survive the journey.
Wow. 1600 miles in that landscape, in those times, and 4 survived.
Incredible story! Though, as a Canadian who's familiar with how searches in the ocean, amazon, tundra, and outback usually go, I'm willing to bet the Soviets didn't actually look for them that hard...it's such a vast area that's so hard to survive in, not only are all of the escapes almost certainly dead (especially after a storm), you'll probably never find the corpses even, and some of you might die looking. Yes, I know Canadians and Russians are very different, but in my experience "this shit is not worth it." is a universal response to the situation. So at least they probably had a bit of a reprieve from being hunted because the Soviets probably just assumed they were dead.
Dude, you’re hitting these out of the park. This is easily one of my favorite channels this year. I guess I do have a morbid curiosity.
I've read the book The Long Walk a couple of times. Truly amazing.
This great channel provides us with insights and tips, dude. The morbid curiousity that you mention concerns other channels that depict survival as horror stories - which is not the case here.
Have a great day !
Most of the "re-enactment" footage shown here is sourced from the 2010 film "The Way Back" directed by Peter Weir and starring Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris and Colin Farrell. It's a marvelous film and highly recommended.
Unbelievable and captivating movie. I also highly recommend.
Thanks for the rec., I will check it out. This story was so captivating. Is there a book?
@@dolphinbear661 The film is inspired by _The Long Walk_ (1956), the memoir by former Polish prisoner of war Sławomir Rawicz.
What an inspiring story. Sadly, my great-grandfather was either just killed outright or sent to a gulag but didn’t survive. My great-grandmother was later told by Russian soldiers he’d died of a heart attack, which was obviously a lie.
He was a Russian Orthodox priest and he refused to give up on his congregants or stop practicing his faith. My Dedushka (grandfather) was similarly targeted, but because he was an artist and university professor who was considered an intellectual. Thankfully he was tipped off by a friend that he had to get out immediately (“Michael, I hear you and your wife are going on a long trip”, is what he said) and they both got out that night and fled, which led to them becoming refugees in Germany. My mum was actually born in a refugee camp. This was just a few years after the war ended.
I’m always to heartened to hear of stories of survival from the many dreadful chapters in Russia’s history. My family are Russian and they were persecuted just as ruthlessly as the people who were not from Russia like the men here.
Russia is an incredible country. It has some truly wonderful people who bravely resist injustice. I hope one day it can find peace within itself and with the surrounding countries and territories that deserve their independence.
I sometimes hear guys referring to other guys as 'legends'. Now this guy was a real legend!! 👌
Absolutely unreal. I can’t even imagine what they had to face. Again, fantastic work.
We all admire you Witold.
My vision has deteriorated rapidly over the last few years from injuries early on which makes reading almost impossible no matter the reading glasses. Most of my recreational reading was behind bars as a result of using various drugs. That being said, this channel takes me away like I'm reading a book that I can't put down even with 14 years clean and with much help from family and friends, in my own little spot of paradise in the mountains of New Hampshire. You have a gift that I can't put to words that I never thought I'd experience again so thankyou from the deepest part of my being that feels no pain and knows no time.
I'm happy that can help in any kind of way. Thank you very much for your kind words.
Yay!! You made my Sunday! Thank you for these stories. You are really talented, it’s like watching a show on the History channel it’s of such high caliber! Bravo! The movie about this called The Way Back is really worth the watch as well!
A great movie. What's crazy is when I researched it, this is when I found out that original author was a fraud main character in the movie should've been Witold.

Like any video project, I immerse myself in the lives of the individuals I'm spotlighting and the challenges they faced. Several years ago, I read the book after enjoying the movie, and I believed I had a good understanding of the story. However, during my research, I was surprise to find out the author Slavomir Rawicz was a fraud and the real hero behind the story was Witold. Glinski's account shared the same core story with a few minor variations and was happy to retell this story from his perspective.
As one of my all-time favorite tales of survival, creating this content brought me joy. I'm deeply grateful for your unwavering support throughout this journey. Thank you all!
Wow! Impressive journey. These were REAL men. I'm buying the book, it's on Amazon. Great video. Thanks
Witold, may you forever walk in the light.
As always, another great video! Keep up your hard work ! ❤
Many dispute this story but there is a note from British intelligence officer stationed in Nepal about 4 white individuals appeared from nowhere in the town of Kathmandu.
Damn/four made it !! 👏👏👏
...when knowledge is VITAL !! 👊👊🦾
Welcome to India ❤

I’ll say it. The most badass dude EVER
Already listened twice! Just love your storytelling, you have a special art!
Always thrilled when a new video comes out !! Please do a vid on the Andes Mountains Uruguayan Air Force Flight 57 survival story.
Yes, I believe I have to do that. One of my favorite survival stories of all time.

It's so good!
This story is incredible!
Amazing. Thank you so very much. What a wise man and extraordinary life.
Amazing. Thank you telling this.
Oh wow I didn't know the guy that wrote the Long Walk was a hoax! I read the book and is one of my favorites. The movie is pretty good as well. This story is unbelievable. To walk that long in those environments is stuff of legend.
It's videos like this that make outdoor disasters the best disaster/survival channel on CZcams. You're entertained and learn something in every video.
Always appreciate your kind words OJ!
Thank you for another great story , really hit home as i am listeninig from Poland . Awesome channel .
Absolutely gorgeous and such a professional work my friend. Shots, composition, music, narration everything here is pure perfection! 👏
Thank you very much!

Another great episode!❤
Excellent presentation and story.
Wow
Great storytelling and videography ! Thanks for your hard work. I enjoy your channel !
Much appreciated!
Wow what a story need to listen again as I missed parts. Very sad with the 18 year old girl dieing at least she was surrounded with good kind people
Its unfortunate that her story ended that way after barely escaping with her life.
You have a way with these stories of heroism and pure dogged determination. This amazing escape was told with compassion, too. Really, what I'm trying to say is that this one was outstanding, but they all are. I don't know who is doing the voiceover, but you certainly have a way of telling it, a certain cadence, which is in short supply on CZcams these days. Fantastic episode, thanks for sharing.
Appreciate the kind words my friend.
@@outdoordisasters you are more than welcome.
What do you mean voiceover?
@@Katie-vy5rd voice-over? Narration. The talking on the vlog. I just think his voice is really relaxing and soothing whilst being able to describe things and covey the information in a sensitive way. And the cadence is perfect for me. You get some CZcamsrs who are loud or talk fast or make silly remarks all the time. I just find this channel so professional and a joy to listen to. I know that the topics are tragedies, but the gentleman (I don't know hus name) will always give safety tips at the end, too. A very well thought out, well narrated, perfectly constructed oratory. I hope that helps. Perhaps voice-over wasn't the perfect word. In hindsight, narration would have been more fitting. Have a great day.
@@chrisbentleywalkingandrambling thanks, one time o commented on his unique voice and someone commented back that his voice was AI generated, which I do not believe, so I was just checking.... I think it is very real , 😊
Good thing he stocked up before going on this daring trek. The Soviet Union was a harsh, Bud Ice-less place
I am amazed they didn't all die and how did they not get lost.??? No maps etc. Amazing
Like cockroaches in a bakery!
Thanks OD!
👍
Pine needle tea would've staved off that scurvy issue
That's correct. When melting snow to drink, adding pine needles to the hot water will also help your body absorb the water.
The commandants wife actually gave him an axe head, the most important item of all
All 7 slipped the bonds of the gulag
I've had a CZcams notification saying that something I've said on here goes against community standards. I can't see why because it's a great video. I'm wondering if you have been notified? Thank you. I'm confused.
No idea. Haven't received anything. Hopefully everything is cool!
I thought " the long walk" wasn't confirmed to be true?
Watch to the end...
I read the book THE LONG WALK
I was shocked to find out the author was a fraud
Shame to hear they had access to plenty of snakes but wouldn't eat them regularly because they thought they couldn't eat poisonous snakes easily. Snakes and small birds are my survival plan food choices for where I live.
COMMIE SHARKS!!
Tradition of giving Russians an F sign is long in Poland's history. There is one famous gesture that is literal - check "gest Kozakiewicza" lub Władysław Kozakiewicz. It's not a sory for your channel but worth learning.
The story probably isn't true. And it is maintained by ppl who have an interest in the narrative of "the freedom of British India" (after such a flight).
For many ppl british rule is not connected with freedom, on the contrary. For example the indians who fought for freedom of british rule or the irish who did the same or those iranians who supported the democratization under Mossadegh, which was brought down by an "operation" of GB & USA
My grandfather escaped from prison in siberia,he used burlap bags for warmth, he's Ukrainian and he "found" A cow and slaughtered it n had a party, Stalin didn't like it.
It's stupid propaganda of savage people to think that Russia is very cold and Mongolia is hot. Do visit Mongolia in winter time and say after what is really cold and what hot
It's not correct to say Russians but soviet! Shame
