- For Steve Callahan, his sailing expedition would be one of the greatest survival stories in human history. Steve Callahan, then a 29-year-old from Boston, was in the midst of an extraordinary sailing journey. On the night of February 4th, 1981, suddenly, a tremendous impact struck the boat, and water flooded in rapidly. He had no idea what he had hit, but the hull of the boat had been torn apart. Steve scrambled to escape the sinking boat. In a desperate attempt to survive, Steve made his way to the life raft on deck. His boat, once a symbol of freedom and adventure, was now a watery grave at the bottom of the Atlantic. Steve could only watch as he drifted away from not just his vessel but also his dream. As Steve drifted further into the Atlantic Ocean, the reality of his situation began to sink in. He was alone, isolated, and adrift in a vast and unforgiving expanse of water.

Premiere stream this Saturday at 4pm PST/7pm EST! New marathon release. We had such a good time during the 50k sub event, want premiere streams more often. So I hope to see you all this Saturday! I appreciate you all for your unwavering support!
As many of you know, I Shouldn't Be Alive is my favorite show of all time. And this story was my favorite of all of the episodes. Truly an amazing story of survival against all odds. His book Adrift provided so many details I never knew. It has to be one of the greatest survival stories ever.
It truly is amazing!
I loved watching "I shouldn't be alive" on discovery channel when I was in high school. My favorite episode was the one about the "khamir rouge" in Cambodia abducting the contractor. Pure nostalgia. Back when History Channel still showed history. And Animal planet had "Meerkat Manor"
@@veronicasolis1286 that is s great episode.
Love that this guy had a ditch kit. Super important in any boat…even worthwhile in a truck.
I have one in my home, just in case. Having one in a boat is of the upmost importance.
For Steve, coming across the solar still I believe was what ultimately saved his life. That was some awesome rationing for the over 70 days he was drifting in the Atlantic ocean😊
I once came across a story of two perivuan (maybe Chilean) fisherman that set put one day and got swept out to sea. The younger of two perished but the other on survived for 14 months a drift at sea before being rescued! Absolutely amazing!
Steve is a true sailor. He's an example to all of us who own a vessel, to never quit. Gid bless this brave man. No one will ever onow how scary that was, but him. He's a true sea creature that survived. 🙏 🌊 ⛵
I am so proud of this channel for how quickly it became recognized as a top notch CZcams channel and how quickly his subscriber count has grown 😁 It is so well deserved due to the quality of his content in each and every video he puts out for us 🥳👏👍💪
Thank you for the kind words. It's folks like you that made this possible. Your support drives me to make the best possible content for you and the many others that watch. Impossible to convey how appreciative I am.
In my head you are an experienced outdoorsman, someone who has done all the outdoor sports you talk about in the videos. You make the videos to encourage people to go out and pursue activities, but always want to warn us how not to get in these bad situations at the end of every story.
Im sure thats not true, you probably just like to make videos about interesting things, but the way you tell the story and talk about what to do and not to do, thats how it all comes across.
Thanks for the videos. 😊
Happy Sunday! Excellent video, I really enjoyed it! I'm glad that Steve survived and was rescued after being lost for 76 days. I can't imagine what he went through while out in the Atlantic and it's a good thing that shark didn't destroy his life boat. Hope you have a good rest of your weekend, and I look forward to seeing the next video!🙂
Wowsers!! What a story! I love what he said to the fishermen......well, I wasn't working on my tan! 😅 He was so courageous.
This man is the ultimate survivor. I can't imagine diving under the water in the dark, only to hear the hatch close on me. That's the stuff of nightmares.
Old story heard before. Very brave man with one fascinating dinner story to tell for the rest of his life.
Have a safe Sunday OD and everyone😊👋😃
👍👍❤️
This poor man was forced to play Raft irl. I'm glad he made it out of this ordeal and went on to experience success.
Excellent story
Many many thanks
In the book "ADRIFT", Callahan said the fish were his friends. And the Dorados saved his life, to the point where the Dorados gave their life to save his.
This too can be used for everyday life as we all navigate circumstances of situations. This story is a reminder of what the human spirit is all about. Stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.
Well said!
This one really boiled down to the fact that survival skills are so dependent on the most important tool in your survival arsenal ---- The WILL to survive. You can't buy that.
I hadn't heard of this incredible story. Thank you OD, you are awesome👍
Thank you so much for watching! Yes, it's an incredible story.
❤ Many thanks for sharing another outstanding story!! Always interesting and educational!!!🙂
What a story of survival! Just stumbled upon this channel and I'm hooked!
I remember reading his book 'Adrift' years ago , fascinating read , remarkable story.
It's stories and production like this that makes the channel one of best on CZcams. I know this story, watched it on i shouldn't be alive. But you telling it OD makes even more compelling. Amazing job as always! The survival chances for anyone in a similar ordeal I'm sure is less than 5%. Steve is the man.
I appreciate the kind words my friend! Yes, it's probably my favorite episode of ISBA. 5% may be giving it too much. 70+ days on a life raft in the ocean with very limited water, food, and a punctured raft? I can't imagine many making it over a month let alone more than 2 1/2 months.
Good video, but a suggestion. Make them into a podcast as well. Even through on an ad for podcasts if you want. I enjoy laying down listening to you. I dont neccesarily need to strain my eyes. Keep up the good work. The podcast can direct people to CZcams as well if they want to see visuals.
Noted!
Second :)
What is your favorite platform for a podcast?
Thanks for making these videos!
I've found a particular interest in outdoor survival stories ever since I had to call search and rescue after almost dying on a mountain last year. You've introduced me to so many cool survival movies and stories.
I'm so glad you made it out! What those people do are amazing. There are many more stories to come my friend.
life of Pi was soo intense. I loved it.
LESSON: If you tell people not to bother you for 5 weeks they won't bother you for seven and then you might be up the creek at week 3. Allow others to care for you, even if you have lived a life of independence and aloneness.
And Wow Steve! Wow!
💯In a number of these stories, people would have gotten help so much sooner or at all if they just either told someone where they're going/the planned route, and/or set up a check in time/day to contact a designated someone(s). You can still be independent and alone while having someone who has your back from afar.
I bet this guy will never ever go on a solo sail again. Also the cameraman what a complete jerk, just filming and watching how poor Steve is suffering over weeks. Heartless 😢
Thank you for this post! Very informative!! I’ve heard stories about people who got lost out at sea/ocean.
Thanks for watching!
Amazing story ❤
Great story again ! Some people are just blessed to live and come back from the impossible challenges 🙏 I enjoyed again your amazing video and Steve story !
Another great video - story well articulated with a great voice, great inflection to keep it very interesting - your videos flow so well and tell the person's story respectfully. Love the pointers at the end also, thank you for the obvious preparation and effort put into these!
🙏🙏🙏
almost beyond believe that ordeal !!!!!
Whew, he wanted to be alone. Be careful what you wish for.
Great one O D thank you enjoyed it 👏👏❤️
I had major anxiety listening, while the ship was sinking
Such a nightmarish scenario. Ugh
@@outdoordisasters terrifying!
I'm pretty sure Robert Redford made this movie.....I have seen it twice!!!
17:14 I'd pose for pictures like this if I'd survive off of Bud Ice for 76 days
😢😮❤
Interestingly bizarre; most of these cases were upon free will ..
☝️☝️☝️
The story in Steve's words is much better then this collection of cliches
I’m calling bs on this story. If his supposed to be shipwrecked, who took the photo of him at 11:53 mark. Anything for a book deal.
That was taken a days after his rescue.
You really think the images accompanying these stories are day-to-day documentation of the ordeal? Some are recreations. Some are unrelated photos that illustrate similar equipment or situations or people. OD labeled the image at 17:09 specifically as an actual photo of his rescue. All the others are illustrative, not documentary of the events in real time. I think you should be more careful about accusing survivors of lying based on the sort of flimsy "evidence" you were citing.
