- The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the world and is known for its extreme climate, characterized by scorching daytime temperatures that can exceed 120 degrees in some areas, as well as bitterly cold nights. Rainfall is exceptionally scarce, and the landscape is dominated by vast sand dunes, rocky plateaus, and gravel plains. Marathon of the Sands, or the Sahara Marathon, is hailed as the most grueling foot race on Earth. This annual ultramarathon spans six days, covering a staggering 156 miles - equivalent to completing six standard marathons. Set against the harsh backdrop of the Sahara desert in southern Morocco, it's a relentless multi-stage adventure through a legendary terrain, one of the planet's harshest environments.
Mauro Prosperi's journey across the Sahara desert was progressing smoothly. The fourth day of the Marathon des Sables was the longest single stage, spanning 57 miles between campsites. On April 14th, 1994, scorching temperatures reached 115 degrees as Prosperi reached the third checkpoint, which was 20 miles into the day's grueling trek. When he began to pass through a section of the race that was dominated by small dunes, the sand around him started to lift and swirl. A huge sandstorm engulfed Mauro. Once it had finally subsided, there remained nothing discernible to guide his compass. The sandstorm had obliterated every conceivable point of reference. The once-familiar landscape was utterly transformed. Mauro Properi was lost in the middle of the Sahara Desert.

Remember there are ALWAYS jealous people who try to discredit anyone who does anything great. THEY SHOULD BE IGNORED.
God bless amazing Prosperi
I hate when people do that
great storytelling
Another lovely share,I was late to the 50K celebration but still watched. Thanks for another lovely share, I always watch your videos from the background.
I had so much fun last night! Thank you for the 50k celebration, I look forward to the next video and live chat 🙂
Thank you Timber! Definitely a lot of fun.
@@outdoordisastersyou're welcome ! It was super fun! I had a blast! I look forward to seeing the next video and chatting about them again! Have a good week 😊
I can get lost very easily in my own neighborhood! Definitely wouldn't attempt the desert😳
Your neighborhood has dust storms?
Really ?!?! 😮😦😁😬
On deaths door for $ and popularity…. A champion like this man, no chance. What a survivor . Winner
Thanks for the Sahara survival tips. Now, if I ever have a dream that I'm in the Sahara, I'll know how to survive the dream until I wake up. I'll sleep better having this information.
😦😠😬😁😁
😂😂😂
If I was him I would not give a shit what other people think. Remember "What people think about you is none of your business " live your truth guy and ignore the idiots that doubt you. I have much respect for you and God bless you.
I doubt he would do it if he was the last person on the planet. Don't have kids if you'd rather risk your life setting records for the fame and glory of it all for yourself.
I'm not sure that is what he was doing? I do think that a race like that is unnecessarily dangerous and it's shouldn't take place. Just like climbing mountains you know the risks so if something happens it's on the person climbing or running no one is to blame if it turns out devastating. I do want to reiterate on your comments. If he was a mother she would have been slammed every way to Sunday. Let a father do it and he is a hero. Just saying.
I remember this one. One tenacious guy and a story beautifully told. Thank you for sharing. The narration is what makes it for me.
Love your videos❤ 🤜🤛
Appreciate you!
Congrats on the 50k!
Thank you!!
👏👏❤️
Amazing fortitude of this man!
Another great adventure from outdoor disasters taking place in the Sahara Desert alone, lost and starving Maru Prosperi beat the odds and survived his harrowing attempt at running a marathon! The story is told exquisitely by this channel and if you enjoy stories of this nature you should check out the other great stories Outdoor Disasters offer! Always top quality!
Congratulations on your 50 kilo!!!
You are doing an amazing work!
I hope many people learn from this. In fact, these things should be tutored at schools!
Wow!! That was crazy!! Many thanks for another awesome video!!! ❤
Yet another great one O D thank you 👏👏❤️
Thank you.
THE DESERT IS HOT. AND COLD. AND SANDY.
That helicopter pilot saw him but chose to ignore him. I mean he was close enough for Prosperi to make out his helmet, they could see each other.
Gonna watch it again so you get credit for 2, besides I liked this one.
Thank you for joining last night SF. Had such a awesome time chatting with you
@@outdoordisasters It was fun! Your audience is so diverse from folks that actually partake of some of these skilled "adventures", to others that just like to watch others do them, and then to people like me that love the outdoors and a good adventure but can take the kids, lol. Let's do it again!
Very good video !
Great channel i love how detailed with thehistorical context you inform in these videos absolutely fantastic
Thank you for your kind words!
The best channel for this content
🙏🙏🙏
He made the mistake of running during the sandstorm, got lost and people will never really believe his survival story.
Wow ❤
Seems to me the grave physical condition he was in, the weight loss, liver failure, lends plenty of credibility to his story.
Agreed, as does the presence of his belongings and bat skeletons in the shelter. It's an incredible story, but I believe him.
Absolutely. I wonder if the doubters think he faked that? I PRETTY SURE NONE OF THAT COULD BE FAKED. My issue is that I believe one
Of the haters was associated with the race? I can't believe that guy had the nerve! What a d%^k.
the worst part - almost - is that people did not believe the ordeal.
Also it's a miracle how he didn't die from disease after eating the bats.
20:41 Inspiring.

I remember this story. Why didn't he use the sun to set his bearings? He just needed to keep heading east or at least northeast. I mean, common knowledge is the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. He was near the end of the race and I'm sure he knew roughly what the course looked like. So, why not head in that general direction? Even if you miss the checkpoint you'd run into civilization or the coast. It's just mind-blowing.
@@eyedentity66 apparently he didn't. Thus why the story happened
That's probably why there are doubts around his story 🤔🤔

I live in the Arizona Sonoran desert which is the hottest desert in the world and I can tell you running with shorts and a t shirt is not a smart idea. I understand why they're running dressed like they are but the desert is one of the most unforgiving places on earth. They should be running in white baggy shirts and pants so there is no direct sunlight on their skin. Their clothes being baggy can actually do the opposite of what you might think, it can cool them off to some degree while they sweat.
People come to Arizona all of the time and do some of the dumbest things because they don't do their homework. People try hiking out here with flip flops, no hat, very little water and think that they're going to be okay. I saw 2 people hiking in the White Tank Mountains about 35 miles or so west of Phoenix and they had no water. The woman had a baby in a front carrying baby carrier and no hat on either her or the baby. The husband was just as ill prepared. If this woman trips and falls forward, she kills her baby. I talked to them and asked them what they were doing. My wife and I were a quarter of a mile from the parking lot so I gave them all of our water because they didn't have any.
I was actually pissed that I had to explain to 2 adults that they were in grave danger being unprepared but I don't care. I am sick and damn tired of hearing random stories on our local news stations or getting a notification on my phone about another stupid brainless tourist that had to be rescued because they didn't do their homework!
You are very kind. You may have saved a family.
The villagers gave him warm goat milk because they didnt want to waste the Bud Ice
🤮
They didn't want him to get a race time penalty with too much water?
Wonder why they rationed the runners water - i drink more than 2 litres a day if it goes over 25 Celcius?
Whether his ordeal was as he described or not it was harrowing I’m sure. Thank you for the video.
I like for videos, but many images I N this video are from Namib Desert. Very far away from Sahara... 😊

Didn't know this story at all! Great video as usual, only one little thing: right pronounce of the surname Prosperi has the accent on the "o" (Pròsperi) not on the "e".
Thanks for the info!
Tell that to Goggins! Stay hard
What may be impossible became possible with this man. Determination and God decided otherwise. Water is Life and yet in the USA a black pipeline is more important than water. The Native Americans tried to tell the people that water is life and the only way to sustain, and yet black oil is more important. Wait till it is not here or elsewhere the moans and crying will commence. This man realized it was not his time so he did something that others could not wrap their head around and yet there is proof. People need to realize that if the run can be dangerous and there are elements that can cause to be lost take all the precautions to survive. Stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.
I don't mean to be rude, but couldn't a compass have prevented this kind of trauma?🤷🏽♀️🎭
Can’t help but notice… If it was a woman, the comments shaming her for taking such a selfish risk as a parent, would be relentless.
What makes you say that?
@@ArizonaGunsDaveprobably the commonality of exactly what moonwacha said. Watch some videos where the lost adventurer is a woman. Check the comments. Many of them will be hate towards her because she went on a risky trip when she had kids. Those comments are faaaaaaaar fewer when the parent lost taking a big risk is a man.
This is what happens to you when you don't have a horse with no name.
So selfish
i wish this channel would just get more to the point instead of all the filler sentences and statements…
You can always go to the description section and skip to the story. Thanks you for watching!
Rude
Maybe he did inflate it !! 😮
Man; a marathon in the Sahara desert ?! 😮😦🥵💀
Sahara Sharks!
