The OceanGate Titan Submersible Disaster | Titanic Dive Gone Wrong in the Atlantic Ocean

  • The 23,000-pound Titan vessel, owned by OceanGate Expeditions, went off the radar about one hour and 45 minutes into its descent off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on June 18, 2023. For days, the world could only imagine the grim scene: five men cramped in a cold, dark tube, knowing that they were about to run out of air. In reality, those aboard the Titan submersible most likely died instantaneously in what officials called a "catastrophic implosion." On board are five passengers, including Hamish Harding, a British businessman, aviator, and space tourist. He had previously descended into the Mariana Trench, broken the Guinness World Record for a circumnavigation of the Earth, and flown into space. Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a former French Navy commander, diver, submersible pilot, member of the French Institute for Research and Exploitation of the Sea, and director of underwater research for E/M Group and RMS Titanic, Inc., which owns salvage rights to the wreckage site. Nargeolet led more than 35 expeditions to the wreck, supervised the recovery of thousands of artifacts, and was widely considered the leading authority on the wreck site. Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani-British businessman. He was one of the wealthiest people in Pakistan and was joined by his son, Suleman. And Stockton Rush, the founder and CEO of OceanGate, the company leading the expedition.

    There's a reason why this story has fascinated the world over. A nightmarish scenario in a tiny submersible with rich people on board. One thing is for certain. Safety is not a waste. Rush was like any explorer. If there wasn't men like him, humans wouldn't had discovered new lands, uncover earth's mysteries, etc. But unlike these earlier explorers, there were plenty of evidence of what happens when you don't follow proper protocols. He paid the price. Just horrible that others had to pay that price with him.
    RIP to all that have pershised and I pray for their families to have peace and have solace in knowing their loved ones didn't suffer.

    Thank you for the implosion simulation. It’s pretty much what I thought. I never believed that they were stranded on the ocean floor. One hour and 45 minutes into their descent is when it happened. As soon as comms were lost. • @invernessity
      @invernessity Před rokem

      Generally, when communication is lost, it does not necessarily mean that a disaster has occurred. Usually, the explanation is more benign - and the Titan had a history of losing comm. So this alone was not particularly worrisome. That is why those on the mother ship waited until the Titan was due to surface hours later before calling the Coast Guard to report it lost. The more ominous factor was the failure of the navigation system (which tracked the Titan's location) which, when coupled with the loss of comms, indicated that an implosion had likely occurred.

    "Designed to go 4000m". Claimed to go that deep. But not properly designed, to go that depth, repeatedly. As found, "the hard way", in recent days (late June 2023).
    To indicate Stockton Rush's ability as an engineer, were his comments on safety, as a binary option. Any competent engineer, will tell you that numbers matter ! Its not "yes" or "no". There are different levels of safety. Yes, you can slip in your bathroom, and get "brained" against your bathtub. And you can also survive running across a freeway. But the level of safety between these two scenarios, have vastly different NUMERIC levels of survivability ! Numbers matter. I have money, and so does Bill Gates, the amount matters.
    Regulation, does not guarantee safety. Government official often can be the biggest idiots. But you really have understand the physics, and the properties of materials. Carbon fiber is great in tension, but not in compression. Rush apparently didn't see the difference. And if he thought he knew better, then he should have run experiments, including many repeat cycles, to test for "fatigue". But he didn't ! If you don't know, that's fine. You "ask mother nature", by running experiments.

Why it imploded this time is because CF and the other materials used erode from sea water faster. Each dive down wore at the integrity of the Titan.

While I know the Titan isn’t directly associated with the Titanic, I would imagine that the proximity of the debris being near the Titanic may further add to the complications.

    This company's mission statement cobtradicted itself the second they fired the engineer or 50 year old white guy who raised concern about the ribbon of carbon fiber used to make the pressure vessel or hull. Let this tradegy be an inspiration to proper safety protocols and the creation of a reglatory body encompassing vessels that endure environments harsher than anything else including space travel. If a wireless game controller fails in a military use the protocols are already programmed into the device being controlled like a drone for example. A spare is readily available as is an engineer. When you're hundreds plus meters deep with no communication too, neither are available so using X as an excuse or Y uses them so just shows that they haven't thought through the scenario of what happens when their controller fails.

    The Weight of them Buildings didn't even scratch the surface, yet the Ocean Gate Titan went into the next dimension of pressure, depth and the whole shebang.

    Have to give credit….some dude said I want to see the Titanic. And then did it. That is freaking awesome! But to charge people to go with you in your little home made pill box is unbelievably ridiculous and dangerous.

    It is unbelievable that Stockton Rush had little regard for safety. I just hope that they pass some international regulations that makes it mandatory for certification for all submersibles.

      No problem! Glad you enjoyed it. Definitely wanted to condense the information and vocalize it for everyone to understand. A lot of details floating around and can go over people's heads.

    He was using cheaper materials and cutting corners. OceanGate was well known for that. He being dismissive and not caring about safety is the Titan's demise.
