Lisala Folau, a 57-year-old Tongan man claims he swam for more than 24 hours after he was swept out to sea by the tsunami waves the eruption triggered. Folau was painting his house on Saturday evening when he heard from his brother about the incoming tsunami and climbed up a tree to seek refuge. He and his niece climbed down during a lull, but were caught off guard by a massive wave and swept out to sea...

Sadly, neither Lisala's son nor his niece were ever accounted for. It is believed that his niece, Elisiva, had drowned only a few moments upon being carried out to sea - most likely when the sound of her screams had grown silent. I couldn't find much else about his son other than it is suspected that he had probably died sometime shortly thereafter, most likely drowning searching for his father and Elisiva.
This such a bittersweet story. On one hand it is an amazing, inspiring and uplifting story of one man's fierce determination to reunite with his family despite the overwhelming odds, but on the other hand, it is a truly heartbreaking and tragic story of loss and unanswered questions. I had hoped so badly that his son and niece would be reunited with Lisala, but unfortunately the universe had other plans😢

I love outdoor and survival content both to watch/listen and to do in real life as much as life permits (got little kids running around now haha). I've always been a bit gear-obsessed but man, one thing I Shouldn't Be Alive reinforces for me is to carry some crucial gear on your all day every day. Even in just blue jeans you can easily carry a flashlight, knife, compass, lighter, and whistle. There are so many horrible stories that even the most basic gear would have (or did) made all the difference. I'm sure Lisala was using primarily upper body strength. And obviously, he's not standing so he can move his legs enough. I think the people of Atata are born on the water and likely everyone on the small island are excellent swimmers.
