  • How many people does it take to start a 1958 Mark 58E?.....
This one gave us problems because the Quicksilver controls and boat that came with it were tampered with. The previous owner rigged up a choke switch to a key installed on the instrument panel and the key switch for the ignition didn't work. We had to salvage some parts, like the rectifier and some other stuff from one of 2 Mark 35a's to make this old Merc run. Al, my brother ended up hot wiring it to start it.
The battery that we used for this was falling apart. That's why you see me standing at the back of the boat with my foot on something. The negative terminal was broken and heating up. I need to put weight on it for a better connection LOL. Though I was going to melt my running shoe.

Still running my 18 horse Kiekheafer Super Hurricaine on my 16 ft flat boat to this day . No problems at all ! 28 to 30 MPH loaded up with my stuff ! one pull and I'm off . Change the plugs every 2 years or so and either buff the points or replace them ! Strongest motor I own .

The starter was fine. The wiring was "customized" on this boat/motor combination. It was really Mickey Moused. The battery was damaged and it was heating up. The post was broken and that's why I was standing on it. I thought it was melting my shoe.

nrrds the typ of gas tank that has the button near handle to pum up. It pressurizes thr fuel and forces fuel into the motor.

Yeah, now that you mention it, it doesn't look like it works. All of his motors will be completely restored.

It's my brother's. The guy at the keys. He's still got too many other projects but wants to restore most of his old Mercs. He's got I think 20 or 22 vintage Mercs. Could be more now. I've lost count.
