Thanks for the tips. All 11 Mercs will have a complete tear down and restoration with the 6 cylinders having top priority. BTW I am just the camera guy. However I do own a Mark 58a and 35a which will be used on the boat in the video. The fellow in the white shirt is my brother. He owns the 11 Mercs including the Mk58 seen here. That day we were just starting them up to see if they all ran. They do.
Got to stay on top of them waterpumps ! they don't like sitting much on them old mercs . part number 47-89983 for small four cylinder . Good motor though . new impeller every few yrs n fuel pump diaphragm .n it will keep you in a good supply of perch !
Hi again Kevin. This is my brother in the video and it is his motor.... he has 25 old mercs. We know about the water pumps and this one is hooped and of course needs replacement. This day we went through 8 of his motors that had sat for YEARS just to see if they worked.... and they did because they are old mercs :) This one already had a little bubbling paint on the outside of the cylinders when it was purchased. The pump was working but not very well so we didn't run it for very long to avoid over heating.
when these motors sit for a long time the rings stick in the ring grooves on the piston, running one like that when the rings stuck can score and scratch the cylinder walls and could also catch in the cylinder wall and break, causing a catastrophic malfunction. so when running an old motor like this you need to make sure that all the rings are loose
The boat is a Playboy design home built and drawn up in 1959 by a man who is now 89. I am restoring it and is almost completed. My goal is to take the old man for a ride.
Hi Jeff. I recognize you from the forums. I'm sure you're right! This motor and five others sat for years! We spent two days getting them all running. This one was no problem. Sometime in the next few years all these will be restored. The Mark 78's are the first on my brother's list. Most likely he'll start on them sometime next year. Too many things on the go right now! How can you tell by the sound that there is not enough compression? Thanks for the comment John
Nice! I don't know if you took a look at my site but I have a similar looking boat, a 1962 Ideal Craft originally manufactured in Philadelphia PA and used on the cover of my amateur CD project. Take a look at johnnycg site and his Gentlemans racer, he's got two beautifully restored Marc 58s and boy do they pur. Good luck with your restoration.
@@Kiekhaefer6 thanks for the quick reply! First boat, hoping to get it running! It was free so fingers crossed. Haven't been able to find too much info on it yet. It seems to have good compression.

Curious about what brand of boat it is?
We just bought a boat with this exact motor on it. Do you know any where we can get parts or specifications?
Marineengine.com, johnsoldmercurysite.com , Facebook - Vintage Mercury Fanatics, Maxrules.com..... This is a good starting point
What is the hp ?
45
where can one find a guy willing to completely restore an old Mercury?
Good place to start. johnsoldmercurysite.com/portal/index.html
I just picked up a 1965 fiberform 17' with a mercury 58a on it. The guy had no info on engine. Is it 2 stroke? He said it ran 2 years ago.
Yes

@@Kiekhaefer6 do you know the proper fuel mixture?
@@richstartin6459 I would pick up a "mercury service manual 1965 and prior".
don't use at Niagara falls up stream...
