  • I bought this motor in parts and put it back together in my 1 bedroom apartment. It's done up as a 1959 Mark 58a in the 1959 Mercury colours of Canyon Copper and Cloud White even though it's a '60 Merc 400 and should be entirely Cloud White if you are a purist. With phone calls to help from my brothers, Dan and Al and members of www.johnsoldmercurysite.com who were invaluble during the restoration process, I managed to get'er done. Mechanical "hands on" help was all from Dan. The original powerhead apparently was "rebuilt" and it didn't take long to break down. One of the reed stops came loose inside and jammed the crank. Good thing I was only trying to start it up at the dock. Anyway my brother and I bought another Merc 400 for parts and we took the best of both motors to rebuild the powerhead. My brother Dan is a great mechanic and swaped parts to make a "new" motor.

Good for you ! excellent motor to fish with or customize n race . I've owned many motors now n that little four has been one of my favorites . max advance is .235 for stock motor . recommend dial gauge . n check impeller every couple years . yearly for salt water use . great motor that was way ahead of its time .

Hi Kevin. Thanks. I did set it up with a dial gauge to the specs in the Kiekhaefer '65 And Prior Manual. The closest I get to salt water with my boat and old Mercs is when I drive away from it where I live in downtown Vancouver BC, on the way to the lake. :) One of the carbs doesn't have a seat where the needle goes into on top of the floats. Gas is coming out of one carb and it idles rough obviously. Runs GREAT on the fixed high speed jets. So I need to either need to install a seat or put on another carb... and I have 2 spares.

Hey Tristan, I bought the paint from Barry Ferrari at www.effenaco.com. They do everything there. As far as what was available back then, the Deluxe models were in all Cloud White without the stainless trim... for example the Mark 35a and Mark 75a were only available as a Deluxe model. The 55a, 58a, and 78a were all available in the Custom Deluxe model with featured the stainless trim, Dyna Shocks, Safety Tilt Switch and your choice of Cloud White, Holiday Red, Bimini Blue and Canyon Copper according to a Kiekhaefer Mercury brochure from '59 that I saw. Having said that, I have never seen a 58a in Canyon Copper either.... a Mark 78a... yes not to mention the 28a. So I did it because it technically was available back then.... plus it looks cool and matches the wood on my boat. The cowl was originally Holiday Red which is like more like an orangey pink. Think 1993 Isuzu Coral Reef. I'd love to see your Mark 28a. Could you send a picture via email of a link to a video?

I built a 350 with AJ carbs into an 40H .had an original H crank Reed cages rods and piston assembly. Ported it .060 towards plug as the H was.
Drilled and tapped the front half for KA carbs and blended intake track to match Reed cage opening. Believe put boysen two stage reeds in it also.
Used later 58a top and bottom cowling in white with chrome bands.
Also used later 44 exhaust divider instead of flat plate as original.
Sitting in race trailer still. Have a D gearcase housing ,prop shaft and drive shft plus water pump cartridge and bearing housing.
No gears and threads need attention as many did.
I run Mac Minnerilli 250 cc alcohol motor built by Pete Helston on an old 85 Gary Pugh hydro. Pete built engine crankcase on his Bridgeport and used a Koning crank modified wrist pin location so both pistons are at TDC at the same time.
Mikuni flat slide carbs. Yamato down housing with a B gearcase ( all I could get at the time ) 12: 15 gear ratio rather then 12:14. Was told it wouldn't work on an A motor ( 250) especially with the prop I had which was to stiff for an A.
I did some port work and 1/4 inch spacer between Reed cage( Yamaha 250 with carbon fiber 2 stage reeds) and crankcase.
Cleaned inside of pipes to get rid of old oil residue so popes had a ting sound rather then thud to help expansion chamber function properly.
It was wicked fast at the last race in winter haven Florida in 2005. I wish I had Pete's old 250 " For Pete's Sake " hydro.
I would dedicate the outfit to a museum.
The family as far as I'm concerned will never own there dad's engine ever again

Do you know how to remove the gear on top of the magneto? Do I need a puller like the flywheel?

Not that I remember. Mine has a small bolt and a cap. The gear just comes off.

Hi Victor, I'd start by cleaning up the points and checking the condenser with a 9 volt battery multimeter as well as cheking the coil for spark. It is also invaluable, when owning these old motors, to pick up a "Mercury Outboards 1965 and Prior" manual. Check spark plug wires for continuity with a multimeter set to ohms. Clean all contact points to assure good connections. I'm still learning. Good idea to go to : johnsoldmercurysite.com for help. it's also a good resource for anything to do with old Mercs

Hey I have a question regarding reinstall of the lower unit if you have time.

I’m no expert but I’ll try. What’s up?

    • @sammartin4692

@@Kiekhaefer6 thanks! So when you reinstalled the lower unit, what gear did you have it in and how were you certain the lower bit was in the same position?

    • @Kiekhaefer6
      @Kiekhaefer6  Před 11 měsíci +1

@@sammartin4692 I’ll try explaining. It’s been a while so I’ll do my best.
I normally make sure the engine is in forward gear since it has a tendency to pop into it anyway. Plus in forward gear allows for tilting of the motor. Putting it back on, if something has accidentally moved or whatever, I use vice grips to make sure the lower is in forward gear. To test this, while holding the drive shaft still, the prop will rotate and click in one direction and won’t turn at all in the other direction. Neutral, it’ll spin freely and reverse it won’t turn at all in either direction. Make sure that the shifter rod that goes up to the cowling is in the right position and also position the cam properly and everything should work properly once reassembled.
