    1960 V-75 on a Glasspar was my first “car”, my ride to and from the marina to work on my summers off school.

    My parents had one in red, exact same set up. They used to put me under the bow when I was an infant and sleep. My father was a PT boat captain right after the war in Hawaii, that how we ended up with a boat

    Beautiful boat and outboard brother. It is very similar to my Australian made 1968 swiftcraft 1500. Its actually 14ft 4 inch. I have a 1978 Johnson Stinger 75hp. Unfortunately i dont have that stellar hardtop though. Best wishes to you from Brisbane Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 ❤️

    I had a '60 75 and it really ran on a 16' wooden Milocraft.
    Over 40, maybe 42 mph.
    Milocraft was a very light boat, they called it molded plywood, made in Chicago.
    Varnished top.
    I have a '68 100 h.p. Meteor Johnson in storage about 25 years. Looks like its about 5 years old. Just needs to be gone through from sitting and starter be rebuilt

    I have that exact motor on my boat. 1960 Glasspar Citation. I wish mine started up that easily. It did sit for 10 years. I got it cleaned up and running last summer and was out on the rivers and lakes of north Idaho as much as I could be.

    Hi Chris and Natalie. We just loved your video of the Johnson 75. We have a '62 Johnson 40, which we've so enjoyed over the years. Now I'd like to find a '63 Johnson 75 for my 60s Whittrem wooden boat - but I'm in the United Kingdom, where not many were sold, so I don't know where to start. Keep up the videos of those super old boats and outboards. Best wishes. Andrew

    I had a V-4 75 like that on a 16 foot StarCraft. The engine ran really well, but it would cave in a 6 gallon tank with the poor fuel consumption.

    Super sweet boat and motor! I have the same exact motor on a 1960 Johnson wooden boat that I bought recently. I was wondering if you know how much gas you use in an hour at full throttle, or at half throttle? Just trying to get an idea for how long I can stay out on the river.

    • @christate1974
      @christate1974  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the comments, I've never kept up with it because it's really not that bad. I have a 24 gallon tank in my boat and at the end of the day I usually have a half tank left. Don't worry about fuel go have fun 👍

  • @januaryc9508
    @januaryc9508 Před 2 lety

    Are you running at 24:1 fuel mixture? I have a 40hp seahorse and mixed at 24:1 as recommended at the time it spits a lot of unburnt oil into the water. Heard there is a debate on if new better oil you can cut to 50:1. Don’t want to blow it up though.

    Hey, this is great! I am also restoring a funliner in Tennessee!! My transom was cut down to fit a short shaft way back when, but I am looking at building it back up and using a long shaft I found. Can you verify that the long shaft is what it was originally supposed to use?

    • @christate1974
      @christate1974  Před 6 lety

      Kane Flinchum congratulations on finding one they are neat boats! I was lucky to find one that didn't need restoration. Mine is in great original condition. What year is yours so I can confirm transom height? Mine is a 1960 and it originally had a 20 inch transom.

    • @kaneflinchum3885
      @kaneflinchum3885 Před 6 lety

      Chris Tate I honestly do not know the year.. couldn't find any identification plates on it anywhere. The motor that was on it was a mark 78a which were only made in 58&59 I believe so I think it will be very close to 1960 as well. Thanks!

      @@christate1974 Hi Chris! it has been almost a year and much progress has been made. I now have a 1964 Mercury 1000 with the appropriately sized shaft on it which has been supposedly fully restored, but I am having an awful time tuning the idle out on it. Seeing as how I am also in Tennessee, I was wondering if you do your motor restorations professionally and would be willing to help me out a little bit and show me the ropes of these antique motors. Apologize for the public message - it seems CZcams has eliminated private messaging.

    What is good compression on one? I have the exact same motor and need to know what is good and what is acceptable?

    • @christate1974
      @christate1974  Před 5 lety +1

      Well good would be at least 90 PSI. All 4 cylinders need to be within 10 pounds of each other. If one is 65 and the rest are 85 that is no good. Has your engine been sitting a long time? If so the rings could be stuck in the piston grooves giving a false reading. If you have been running it and they are even and at least 80 your fine. If it has sat for years squirt some oil in the cylinders and pull it over to distribute the oil. Sorry for such a long answer I just don't know anything about your motor.

    • @PowersPlays97
      @PowersPlays97 Před 5 lety +1

      @@christate1974 no please don't be sorry, I appreciate it. My motor has been sitting for at least 3 years more likely longer. I got about 72 psi on #1 #4 #3 and around 65 on #2. Just deciding if it's worth putting more money into. I got spark going on it last night it will need a complete fuel system rebuild. And some hose replacement. Starter and everything else works great.

    • @christate1974
      @christate1974  Před 5 lety +1

      @@PowersPlays97 it sounds like it's tired. Get some outboard oil or transmission fluid in all the cylinders and pull it over several times with the plugs out, squirt some more, pull it over several times.when checking compression make sure all the other spark plugs are in the holes when you check each cylinder. See if compression comes up and evens out. If it doesn't I wouldn't put any money in it. If you can get it to 80 in all 4 your fine

    • @PowersPlays97
      @PowersPlays97 Před 5 lety

      @@christate1974 that sounds like a good plan to me also. Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it. I'll let you know what I can get out of it. I really like the old motor and it would be a drop on for my current boat without any control changes. Thanks again.
