Like it so much I did another video! Shrink tubing on the hi tension wires and put antique champion plugs in it. Great engine!

Beautiful job guy . Good on you
These motors were a great step up from the 35's at the time. Yes they had a ton of torque and were great on heavy boats. Loved gas though.
My parents had one in red, exact same set up. They used to put me under the bow when I was an infant and sleep. My father was a PT boat captain right after the war in Hawaii, that how we ended up with a boat
I have one in Argentina
One of the ugliest and beautiful motors I have ever seen. Today's motors are sad and boring, not like the ol girls. Well done sir. Best wishes to you all from Brisbane Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
Had one on a 10 footer with steering and controls on the Merrimack River when I was a kid. Boat was basically me, gas tank and the stern lol . Had a ball with it, great motor but I did hang over and change a few cotter pins while I drifted with the current a few times.
Beautiful boat and outboard brother. It is very similar to my Australian made 1968 swiftcraft 1500. Its actually 14ft 4 inch. I have a 1978 Johnson Stinger 75hp. Unfortunately i dont have that stellar hardtop though. Best wishes to you from Brisbane Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 ❤️
You have awesome videos, wish you were still making them. 👍
Thank you for that. I'm not completely done I just took a break
@@christate1974 sounds good, I’ll be looking for them. 👍
I remember these engines and they really punched beyond what 50hp would suggest.
They sound even better with the cover off.
Just picked one of these up at a yard sale yesterday for 20$!!..its locked up but it is 100% complete
I have a question could you contact me. I know it's been 7 years, but possibly you might could answer a question.I pulled a shift pin out of the lower unit. How do I get it?Put back in.I thought it was the oil drain plug
Just picked one of these up today. Unsure ast to exact year, and mine is a pull start, but it's in good condition.
That is one sweet motor!
Love it.
Stunning. Pure music for the ears. Well done!!
Wow !!!hahahahahaha That engine is a billie bad Ass !!!! It kicks Ass !!!! Very Awsome
I grew up with one of these pushing a 1950’s fiberglass P 17 . Amazing torque could easily pull up Multiple skiers . Owned through the 1970’s with frequent use in California. She never broke down or failed to start and run perfectly. That sound brings back so many great memories
How do you get the cylinder off there's one nut at the bottom underneath I can't seem to figure out how to get at it does it require special wrench
Guy up street tossed on of these in the trash I went an grabbed it never seen one this old lol no water needed I take it air cooled
Guy down street from me tossed out in the trash a motor that looks like this I went an grabbed it have no idea the horsepower but it looks like this one the propeller is about the same size as a 30-35hp of today I've never seen or worked on an outboard this old lol will it run again no idea but I'm gonna try anyhow lol
Which Alumacraft model are you in?
Sexyyyyy!!!
Love the old engines ❤
Nice good to see it run, I picked up a S45 can’t wait to get it on the water
I have the same motor on my original 1958 Sumark Gull Resorter (you likely have never seen nor heard of one), and the motor is tired. It had very low hours on it, but a few years back I accidentally blew up the powerhead (holed a piston) after 30 seconds of running at full throttle, likely for lack of water despite a new water pump. I was heartbroken, but installed a 1959 Evinrude powerhead from a parts motor I had. It worked fine until the driveshaft broke a few teeth off in the gearbox. Fortunately, I had a spare lower unit from the Evinrude parts motor and it worked fine until last year when it had trouble running at anything above idle speed; it wouldn't take any throttle. I had all new electrics in it, and it ran fine for the few hours I used it before that. Just depresses me. How about selling me your motor? And by the way, your motor is not achieving maximum rpm whatsoever (5000). Maybe too much prop?
Runs perfectly. Beautiful.
That is one sweet motor! I’m looking at one I may buy
Hey i have 3 boat motors you'd probably be interestered in. Two 5hp from 1947 and a 1953 Johnson 25hp
beauty...with balls!!!!
She sounds good Chris
What oil do you run in your old stuff? At 8:1?
Nice video thanks for sharing this. One for sale local, think I shall pick it up.
How many cubes is that puppy ?
Nice and man does that ever rock and roll.
What oil and ratio do you run yours at? I noticed my cylinder heads run pretty hot
Do your cylinder heads run kind of hot? I have the same motor it seems to run hot maybe I need more oil
Eltos cool different than Johnson. When putting your hand on cylinder heads check the freeze plug area I bet it's cool. The outside gets really hot
@@christate1974 I think I remember it being cool maybe less water around the heads?
I have the same one really great running motors. Gear case leaks a little water but I just stuff it full of gear lube. I plan on cleaning it up and getting it a decal
Any idea what your WOT speed is/was?
Yes, I can watch this over and over right video
I had the twin to this motor on a 16 foot Jupiter Starcraft for years. Great running motor but I NEVER EVER seen any Outboard eat so much gas!!!!! It got gallons per mile.
Just bought 1957 RJE-19 35hp Johnson, boy is it rough looking, but I was able to fire it up. definitely needs impeller, wires, fuel lines, carb rebuild, just everything more then likely
How many piston’s
Thanks for sharing! I would love to have a Evinrude rowboat motor one day. How rare are they?
And that was back when HP was rated at the flywheel, not the prop. So that's really more like a 35.
How hard are these on fuel if when your up on top & back over to about 2/3 throttle?
I never seen ANY outboard eat so much fuel in my life! , not just a gas hog, nope, a gas PIG ! but they do run great.
@hydroy1 a new merc 500R probably uses less gas , for those who say that they don't make outboards like they used to ,thank God they don't 😅
We had a '58 Lark 35 on a Glasspar Avalon. It had a single rack and pinon steering. We later added a '62 Starflite IV that was hard on the steering system.
That's awesome. I have a 1956 25022 Big Twin 30hp I'm starting now. It's cherry. I probably could put fuel too it and go but I'm gonna totally overhaul it back to factory specs so I can run it as a daily and know I wont harm it. I bet it doesn't have 50 hours on it. Do you know if there are steel bearings for the crank available so I can run 50:1 ?? It gets expensive running 24:1 lol
I had a 57 Johnson with electric start and remote throttle on a 1965 Larson 16 ft speedboat. That 35 Performed more like 50 Plus HP...what a great motor! It kicked that boat around very nicely on the St. Croix river back in the 80s. It was similar in performance to my Bayliner 17 ft with a Mercury 70 HP.
