1955 Mercury Mark 25 Outboard Tear-down

  • In this video I'm tearing down a beautiful 1955 Mercury Mark 25 Outboard that I have hopes to get running again at some point. Fair warning that I don't yet have the service manual for this motor, and I definitely have a lot to learn before I start getting it back together. In editing this video, I realize that I'm complaining more than usual about all of the tough bolts, tight clearances, and inconvenient placements. In part I was probably just a little salt that day, but it really did seem that inconvenient at the time - especially since I was trying to figure it out as I went.
    It may be a while before I get working on this, but for now I hope you enjoy the video.

    Dude you are a life saver, my dad gave me an old Mk25 and its been sitting in my garage for almost a year while I try and figure out how to take it apart without wreaking it.

    I have a 1957 mercury mark 10 I've been restoring. Fortunately mine was in good shape other than needing a paint job. I did replace the plug wires and spark plugs and get a tiller handle. The motor had a remote control assembly for a boat with a console like a small boat or mini hydro. They are fun to work on plus all standard tools can be used. Glad I kept mine

    You have a great attitude and appreciaition for this old motor.I stay away from them old Mercs that are salted up and seized.You are very,very lucky the pistons came out of the motor to get it apart as it would of been a wall hanger for sure.Ive used 25 ton presses to get salted ,frozen OMC pistons out and their still stubborn to achieve success. Unfortnately you just cant press the pistons out as there is no way of doing so hydraulically or manually with their closed chamber head design. Roundstock thru Plugholes are a possibility but the pistons would most likely be ruined. Dont think this one will ever run again from my years of experience.You can cleanup most of those needles,journals & free up the main crank ballbearings if you cant find them if their not pittied too much. I do it all the time anyhoo Good Luck to you..

      Yeah for now, pretty much. It'll take some machining and a complete rebuild if I want to get it back and running (far more than the engine is worth, but would be fun to do as a side project)

    Invest in the parts you can FIND ! Most of the repop stuff today is all NFG and the orignial parts have been long gone for decades.

    Salt water motor, Your screwed. Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery difficult to drill & re tap them broken bolts out even on a really nice Bridgeport Mill. Also100% of all the new bearings are NLA. no needles, no top or bottom balls or top needle bearings at all, and you will have to hand cut all your gaskets yourself as there all NLA. The new repop gaskets they sell now blow out the first time you run the motor on gas & oil. BEEN THERE. Oh and them coils for the ing, system are $140.00 EACH !!!! Yeah, it's a wall hanger. Should have looked for ALL the parts before you laid a wrench on it.
