  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Iron Man 2 are both sequels to successful origin films, and they each set the stage for the next Avengers film. But Winter Soldier is widely praised as a political thriller that moved the genre (and the franchise) forward, while Iron Man 2 is widely regarded as a stumbling block. In this video, we tell you why.

      @masoodjalal1152 Před 3 lety +13

@@ScreenCrush that's true. Been arguing over it for too long. Both changed, one became selfless the other became selfish, they were their opposites from begging to the end. Though, iron man transformation was felt, while Caps transformation was way to slow and static. We didn't even anticipated him staying in past with Peggy. Nor was it ever shown that he intends on doing something similar. That was just a dumb move that destroyed what Agent Carter achieved.
But I have to say that Captain Americas triology is more connected to the whole story(shield and hydra) than iron man's triology, which is mostly centered around Tony stark(iron man). Maybe that's is why we see slow transformation for Captain. Captain Americas trio was one of the core stories in the grand scheme second only to the avengers. The others focused more on the characters.

    • @Ari33sa
      @Ari33sa Před 3 lety +1

@@masoodjalal1152 Also I agree tha CA trilogy is more connected to the MCU. I personally really like IM3 as a mostly standalone movie and I don'T think connectivitiy - or even scale - make a movie better or worse by itself. That said, it'S clear that the CA movies were much more connected, but I think that's mostly because they spanned over a longer time. IM itself is a standalone movie, that sets up the broader universe but you can easily watch it by itself and then leave it at that. IM2 is still a phase 1 movie, so again you can mostly watch it by itself, though much like Age of Ultron it suffers a little from 'setting up the sequels'. Half of IM2 is to prepare us for the Avengers. But as it'S still quite early and there were many creative choices made after IM2, ultimately there's little it can really connect to as well. IM3 is one of the (if not the?) first phase 2 movies, right after The Avengers. It's in a way an Epilogue to both IM1+2 and the Avengers, but again this is where the connectivity ends. The further we move along in the MCU the more connected we get. CA WS is a late phase 2 movie and CA:CW even phase three, at that point the characters, sets, powers etc. are firmly enough establihed that you can just move the pieces from prior movies across the board.
The IM trilogy is pretty much the tirlogy that sets up the MCU. It lays the ground work. CA can take that and carry the story along.

"Winter Soldier" is not just a good MCU film. It's one of the GREATEST SUPERHERO FLICKS EVER PUT TO FILM!!! It stands alone! It needs no real connection to any of the other superheroes to work! It transforms the foundation of a Cinematic Universe, without completely taking a dump over all the films that came before it!

Iron man is a great trilogy franchise and had its potential but its just poorly written. Ironman 2 & 3 had little to nothing contribution on character development and the MCU as a whole. Meanwhile, CA movies have been very integral to the MCU. First Avenger introduced Hydra and banished Red Skull, Winter Soldier dismantled SHIELD and made cap doubt about authoritarian control, paving the way for Tony to create Ultron (surprisingly, cap's character development between TFA and TWS is deeper than it looks like) and CW made half of the Avengers rogue that led to Thanos getting the stones. Irom Man 2 and 3 feels like a standalone sequel

I feel that Iron man 2 & 3 don't have "character" development. But, instead. "Perspective" development. Of course, this could count as character development - however! Tony changed his mindsets and functions in iron man 3, which was a bit before Ultron and civil war. It's what led to Iron man not just being a "lone man with tools to function against every situation."
That's why all of his suits were destroyed, because in the end - Iron man decided that it wasn't his suits that were important, but the people around him. His family. That's what developed Ultron, he wanted to make a shield of iron suits around the world, so that *his* family wouldn't have to suffer anymore and eventually, with how he saw the situation in civil war, that is why he took to the sovokia accords instead of the captain's side. He wanted to protect the team as a whole because they were his family. This would lead to regulations at that point due to the accords, and it led up to him taking Steve's words to heart.
They would all lose *together*, as a family.
So, whilst it might not have much to do with the overall MCU universe, it certainly did have development on tony, at least in my opinion - thus it is why he saw things even more starkly (hehe, puns) contrasted with Captain America's views on what to do. But, it's possible I'm wrong pretty much entirely on this. I just think that tony did have development as a mindset.

I think that W.S would've done just fine without any source material. On the surface level, it didn't look like Iron Man 2 at all, it was more complex and bits of the story were splashed here and there but formed a cocoon in the end. Iron Man 2 was a must more average story without any moral message and was only focused on the main protagonist instead of the narrative. W.S feels like an entire different ground, it was such a unique entry in the MCU that is still deemed as the best MCU solo movie by most fans. If Iron Man 2 was the source material, then i wonder how it's the worst MCU movie on so many people's list. Considering that you are saying it took most sotry engine from the IM2, it would've failed nonetheless but it didn't.

Iron man 2 as not the best movie, but it was still very good. the action sequences were very well choreographed, and the villain made total sense, as well as helping to set up for homecoming. some of the transitions were clunky, yes, but they were also a very realistic way that at least Nick Fury would have info-dumped on tony. in addition, we don't know hardly anything about Howard stark. there was probably an agent in shield who he trusted to get the info to tony, and several fail-safes, especially if he has any similarity to his son. I would say that it is underrated, but far from the best.

Actually, looking from a perspective of finished storyline of Tony Stark, Iron Man 2 had the best possible keypoint - Tony's growth. His growth from a chldish "Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist" with little to no moral sense into a man who saved the whole universe. Both movies are good, and nether one is better. Because they're different and have a different scale. WS was about world-scale events and IM2 was about growth of a world saviour.

Strong in every way from open to close - great characters and acting, complex plot, but not overwrought, anchored in the real world but still "super-heroic" enough to satisfy. Tons at stake for each character, and for the MCU as a whole. As close to a perfect super hero movie, IMO, as I have seen.

I know I’m watching this really late, but what if Howard Stark knew what kind of father he was. He knew he was super busy and his mind wasn’t on raising his son. He scolded tony in the scene but then said he loved him and made all of that for him because he had big dreams for his son one day and their relationship just wasn’t one that was super affectionate. Which made the scene in End Game that much more impactful. And to your point about him dying when tony was an adult, by that time I’m sure Howard saw his potential but also saw that he was being reckless and maybe wasn’t ready to pass the mantle to his son. Not knowing he was going to die before he had a chance to pass the torch. Which leads to Tony getting worse and becoming the man he is in iron man 1. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m new to this but after seeing your take on the scene I felt like you could have gone a little deeper into the relationship. But I agree that SHIELD ruined the movie haha

All Captain America films involved story arcs that contributed to the entire MCU, whilst keeping CA as the central character. The film titles even suggest this - CA: The First Avenger, CA: The Winter Soldier, CA: Civil War. So while CA is the anchor to the films, the stories affecting him become more interesting. Iron Man's films are just numbered, indicating a focus on the main character at the expense of supporting characters. Once you've seen IM1, there is nothing more to learn about him or this interactions with others until you watch the Avengers films.
Captain America, with the shield being physically and literally passed to Falcon, there is clear continuity, with interesting ways the story arcs can go. We didnt see that hand over between IM and Spider-man. Spider-man has not appeared in any IM movie, so I'm less invested and a little annoyed with Spidey tasked with carrying on IMs legacy, when Spidey's own story in the MCU has yet to be embedded.
We know how and why Falcon and Bucky are CA's BFFs from CA2. After several movies, all we know about IM's BFF's - one is a soldier who wears a sub par Iron Man suit and the other is head of security - for a one man army! It didnt help that they changed the actor for WM, a change that was handed very badly.
IM2 introduced Black Widow as a stereotypical 'secretary' type, but the character was poorly fleshed out and overly sexualised. Principally remembered for single handedly beating up Hammer's security - beauty and brawn, just a capable sidekick. In CA2, we learn more about the super intelligent, highly skilled, humorous, spy, who saves and was saved by CA. They are equals. She is more than a sidekick, she is an Avenger. Cant say the same for War Machine.
CA2 is regarded as one of the best films of all time. CA2 is near perfect, with a superb cast, fantastic plot, brilliant direction - heck this movie finally put Marvel Studios on the map. CA2 was far better than CA1 - and CA1 is a great movie. IM2, while a 'not-bad' movie, isn't as good as IM1 or in the same class as CA2. It didnt concentrate enough on long term character or story development. If it had, maybe we would be looking forward to IM4, 5 and 6, with TV or film spin offs for War Machine, Happy and even Pepper Pots/ Rescue! And dare I say ... Iron Woman, the adventures of Morgan Stark.
It's telling that Iron Man will be remembered for his suits and heroic death. Captain America will be remembered for his entire story arc, the continuing stories of his BFFs, and the possibly of his return as Old Man Cap! Old Man Iron Man? No thanks.

" What is, and Always Will Be, My Greatest Creation, is YOU !" And gives Tony the clue that unlocks the secret
that saves his life. Tony Stark then unlocking the secret, working with Jarvis and building the Accellerator to

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 proved that we really, *really* didn't need an entire movie of Tony uncovering his dad's work. The reveal that Howard founded SHIELD was treated exactly as importantly as it needed to be - that is, not important at all. I thought the scene where Tony figured out the new element from Howard's model was the genius of the film - it saved his life, it reminded him that his father wasn't perfect, but loved him all the same, and I think *that* was the spark for Tony that made him realize that he couldn't save the world alone.
Point being, I obviously don't think IM2 is perfect, but I also don't think that you're giving the film enough credit.

IM2 had it's work cut out for it, Cap 1 shows his origins and the building blocks of Shield, IM2 did the same in the now day to show where things are, who the players are and Thor 1 expanded the reach Shield had thus showing the movie goer that SHIELD is a large force not to be messed with.
If this was all left for the last few min or post credit scenes then going into THE AVENGERS that movie would've had it's work cut out for it, explaining who Black Widow is and then having her meet Bruce Banner would've been a lot to have an audience not familiar with the characters to follow.
IM2 was the Phase 1 movie that really introduced a lot of players / figures / status of the world before we got to The Avengers, hell without IM2 doing what it did The Avengers would have felt more empty and lacking in areas and would have had to do a LOT of work to get everything up to speed to then tell it's story.
Say what you will about Iron Man 2, it's not perfect and the Villain is the weakest point (Venko) but Tony Stark IS that movie, SHIELD is introduced in a way I enjoyed in IM2, small scale and introduces us to the players we need to know, it was the opposite in Winter Soldier as they are shown as this MASSIVE Organization with countless players (As they really are) but IM2 made it digestible and going forward the stakes / events / depictions can be bigger and massive as the ground work was laid.
Long Story Short, IM2 had a lot on it's shoulders and it did an EXCELLENT JOB and I ALWAYS enjoy watching it over Thor 2 or The Incredible Hulk as it keeps me entertained, that Suit Case Suit Up scene is just amazing and watching War Machine being created and the characters of Rhody and Tony interact is just so fun, better chemistry with Cheadle I felt too.

another excellent breakdown, very concise and focused. I agree, thanks for the wonderful transitions like with Zola's computerized face and him looking through the magnifying glass, great edit!

I love these comparison videos. Also, as much love as I have for TWS, Iron Man 2 is okay, I'm ... I'm good with it.

I mean Winter Soldier had more drama because of the story line. Tony wasn’t fighting some ancient friend who was brainwashed and made into an assassin...like come on. For the story they had Ironman 2 was a solid and fun movie.

Did you say that Iron Man 2 didn't work? The movie was great. RDJ being hilarious as always yet at the same time is spiraling out of control cuz he's dying. His and Pepper's relationship. The introduction of Black Widow. War Machine and the expo fight scene was great. Hammer's dance on stage😂. Hard to imagine anyone not liking it

While I realize this theory is post-facto and not an excuse for fudging the scene, just another way of looking at it: a possibility for why Howard Stark arranged the Expo hall to be a molecule he invented might follow as such:
    a) It's about taking credit, but not letting anyone else know about it. Howard, like Tony, is a bit of an egomaniac and felt that he could not let anyone else - from a business perspective, not a spy perspective - get a hold of the element he discovered, so he left a message for the one person he thought would be smart enough to decrypt his shit: Tony.
    b) Creative people actually do spend a lot of time hiding references and shit in their work, so it's a least conceivable that Howard as a creative genius would arrange the expo in this fashion purely because he could make it work, and it made him feel clever and accomplished to do so - which again, its about ego.
It's not a perfect scene, but I'm paused about 14 minutes into the video because it feels like the comparison is sort of off the rails at this point.

Very interesting analysis. I've always liked IM2, even though I might be in the minority. Considering everything that Marvel mandated for the film, it's a miracle that it came out as good as it is--as another poster called it, a "fun, popcorn movie." CA:TWS, of course, is brilliant--among the best two or three films in the entire. MCU. Maybe it succeeded where IM2 didn't because it didn't have as much freight to carry. It's biggest reveal was that Hydra had infiltrated SHIELD., while IM2 had to keep many more plates spinning. CA:TWS is a far better film, but I've always found both to be very entertaining.

Tony let Rhodey take the armour because he's trusts him more than most

Which is a weird decision considering that he stole the armor for military's agenda and nearly got many people killed in the end. Yeah, I think that they would really trust issues if this movie had great storytellers but that's just me.
