  • Spider-Man and the Amazing Spider-Man are two similar--but very different movies. Raimi launched a new era of superhero films, while Amazing Spider-Man struggled to forge a new way forward for the franchise. In Scene Fights we break down two similar scenes, that highlight the successes and failings of each film.

    It's only now i figured that the two movies have different aspect ratio. The height of Raimi's Film is adding more to the "epicness" of a superhero story as it leaves room for "larger than life" characters like spider-man. I'm more fond of this apect ratio rather than the "flat" wide shots, which is more common in cinema.

    • @alexmikhylov
      @alexmikhylov Před 3 lety +11

      both are good in their own right
      the western set in the great prairies will look better in 21/9 - it would be a "horizontal movie"
      another good example - scenes from Interstellar set on the water planet
      spider man is set in a skyscrapers filled NY - a very much a "vertical" landscape, and spider-man literal and metaphorical up and down swinging makes it a "vertical movie", so it benefits from a higher frame
      I made this all up
      I actually love when movies change aspect ratio throughout a runtime - it's a very simple yet powerful visual instrument

      Short version: in this world "spider man" is just a cross species plan that wasn't ready.
      Long version coming up!

    • @isaiahbarton7507
      @isaiahbarton7507 Před 3 lety +11

      As seen in tasm 2, those spiders were being used because they can heal themselves, oscorp wanted to find a way to apply that to humans, and in the process, Richard Parker made a startling discovery which prompted him to disappear. Now how does that disprove your opinion? Well, let me explain.
      Since Richard's disappearance, oscorp has been tinkering with cross species genetics, as seen in tasm. Skipping the obvious stuff like the lizard and shit, the spiders were kept alive and then Peter gets bitten and doesn't seek medical attention. Meaning that oscorp was still working with the spiders, but their work wasn't ready. But what does this have to do with Peter? Nothing. Here's why.
      Oscorp made it a point to keep anything related to his father's work secret. So Peter is just a kid with questions about his folks. So when he finds that his pops worked at oscorp, he follows the bread crumbs, and yeah spider bite happens. This doesn't show that you have to be the child of uber cool scientist to be spider man because the huge plan was to keep specifically him away from this. Why? Here's why.
      "Spider man" is just the cross species oscorp was planning for, they just weren't ready. Peter's courage and his journey throughout the movie is what makes him a hero.
      In Tobey version, it's an inspirational story about how anyone could be spider man. In this darker version, spider man is really just a cross species that work. It's just an oscorp plan, nothing more than just an experiment. In this world Peter is not special, he's just an experiment. Let's say Peter never found that his father worked at oscorp. Well, eventually oscorp would've perfected the spider plans and made spiderman and scientific breakthrough. Not a hero, just an over the counter drug.
      To sum up, it sucks. It's not inspirational, it's just bleak and unnecessarily sad, but it's real. Spider man is fun because he seems special, but in reality no one is. And it's a truth we need to accept. This version of spider man does. The truth in this movie is that no one is special, the lesson is that we don't have to be. We have our flaws and our losses, but if we can overcome it we could be better than special, we could be happy. Isn't that what spider man is all about? In the end, it doesn't teach us that you have to be someone specific to be spider man, it teaches us that we have to greater than what we suffer to be spider man.

    • @amon8977
      @amon8977 Před 3 lety +14

      @@isaiahbarton7507 That's what makes TASM's version sucky. They overcomplicated the origin story. A Spider-man movie can be dark, sure. But why overcomplicate the origin? Spider-man is relatable to his audience. He is not like those other superheroes that are rich or born with powers. Spider-man is fun because he is relatable. Relatable in a sense that his problems are what we experience daily. School problems, love life issues, small wage earnings, etc. Look at what they did with Tobey's version. Simple yet relatable and fun. That's why we love it. MCU took a different route without showing the origin but it's fine since we know it already but we saw what we experienced when we were in school as awkward teenagers. It's fun.

    • @isaiahbarton7507
      @isaiahbarton7507 Před 3 lety +5

      @@amon8977 there was more to it than just those two movies. There was sinister six plans, and other oscorp stuff. Tobey was simple because it was just spider man and friends. Tasm was going to dive much further, creating a bigger world. Yes it's quite complicated, but it would have covered it's tracks and delivered. Maybe in over complicating the origins was to ensure that it's a different incarnation, not a lazy remake. Like the dark knight, there was so much more to that origin than other batman. They could've simply done a much similar origin as Tobey, but where's the individuality? Plus, the paradigm for superheroes is changing, not just movies, as a whole. The demand for complicated stories is growing. Honestly, this can be compared to daredevil series. This was made to be a much bigger world.

    Issues or Tropes with the Raimi Movies that I personally find kinda untrue-
    1) MJ being a Damsel in distress- Somewhat true, but she was a living breathing character, and actually stood up for herself in certain situations. Remember, that she came from a Broken home and it's fine to be relying on a particular heroic figure.
    2) Goblin Suit- I like it a lot, but u can understand some people not liking it, and I can see that it is a little "Power Rangery". But it's still better than what they initially had in mind. 8 year old Me bever minded it back in 2002, it looked sick af! The green did have a Purple sheen to it. It was like the colour coat that was popular amoung Import Tuner guys back then. There's an argument that they should have given him a military themed or a distressed cloak, but that would feel Outta character.
    3) Venom being bad- Also disagree. Venom was pretty good and well-done, considering how forced and unwanted Sam felt about him. The Symbiote animation was so good, Venom 2018 can't even hold a candle against it.
    4) Eddie being a turn-off- I liked Topher Grace as Eddie. I think it was a perfect contrast to Peter. Rather than being a Buff, Punkish, cocky Guy, he was more of a Smooth, Overconfident, Fast-talker. Kinda the opposite of Peter. I liked Eddie up until the Symbiote Takeover.
    5) Spidey Suit looking old- Just shut up. It looks extremely beautiful, and it still is my Spidey Suit even after all these years. That would be the only suit which will be considered 'Vintage' in a couple decades.
    6) Organic Webs- I actually didn't mind it at all. Of course, I was a kid so I didn't care much about these things. The only reliable Spidey media I had was the 1994 Animated Series that was dubbed and telecasted in my country since 1999. That's where I one of Spidey having Web-Shooters. We had Spidey comics, but they weren't organised properly, since the Comics were Printed by a company who collaborated with Marvel, DC etc. See "Gotham Comics"
    7) The Black Suit- Okay, this is where I'm at 50-50. I like the one they used in the movie, but it isn't even a competition compared to the Classic Black Suit. They could have done something like 2-tone colours (like they used with Goblin) maybe a Black with Purple or Blue Highlights.
    8) CGI- I think it was pretty brilliant, especially everything in Spider-Man 3 (The Sand and Symbiote Physics). There were some occasional duds, but apart from that it was great. Just check out the Burnin Apartment Fight Scene from the First one (2002). The Scenes here Spidey dodges the Pumpkin Blades is entirely CG. I could never make it out. I ways thought a person was dodging some projectiles in slow motion.
    9) Relationship between MJ and Peter- I think it rather mature, along with the tone of those films. They simply weren't just Superhero Movies, they taught life lessons too. TASM series was pretty much teenage fantastic fan-fic.
    10) Aunt May- Rosemary Harris was a natural in her role. She was very Motherly and always full of wisdom. That's what I want an Aunt to be. Aunt May from TASM was Bland, and the one from Tom Holland makes me want to stuff her like a Thanksgiving Turkey. Not exactly the appropriate emotion for that character.
    11) The implied Rp Scene in Spider-Man 2002- Not many people talk about it, but a bunch of my friends do. It's a little creepy to think about it, and I always feel slight discomfort watching that scene as well as the fight. Spidey and MJ share the Classic Up-side Down Kiss within 3 minutes of the Scene. Don't get me wrong, that kiss is a beautiful moment on its own, but just a little uneasy compared how MJ almost got Rped had Peter not happen to change two damn busses just to meet her.
    12) The Uncle Ben Killer retcon- This didn't bother me back in 2007, I even got shocked to find it. But after a while, I started feeling weirded out with it. Uncle Ben's death is too Classic, and I realised they probably did that to make Sandman feel more substantial, but it adds in a movie that already had too much going on already. Still, I loved Thomas Haden Church as Sandman.

    Those two would talk about your mother while giving you a beat down, that was the only thing that threw me off with Toby's portrayal, even the MTV cartoon had him talking smack cause that's one of Spidey's main parts of his persona.

      @kevinjmccloy5865 Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, but just because it works in the comics, doesn’t mean it’s going to work on screen. Raimi’s action scenes don’t really call for quippy one liners, and anytime there is, it’s dorky like the established character in those films is.
      In these movies, while there are some genuinely good quips, I think the lizard fight has the quips utilised well, but for a majority of the movie and in TASM 2, Peter’s just a bit of douche. Which isn’t spidey. Yeah he quips, but he doesn’t just let innocent people die to tell his joke, the guy’s a superhero not a Stand up comedian. Was he hoping that the Rhino would feel so roasted that he’d stop the truck and get out to rethink his dodgy life choices?
      I feel like people jump on the quips far too much, but comics back in the day were filled with pointless dialogue, that works for comics because you read it. A film is a visual treat, if you can show something about your character without saying a word, then do it. Raimi gets this as a filmmaker, Tobey doesn’t need to quip during his final battles, and that usually signals to the audience that the situation is being taken seriously. And when he does quip in a fight, it shows he’s a bit more relaxed, like when Harry saves him in 3, he has a small quip after it, but it’s there to get us to smile at these two friends fighting side by side.
      Probably a longer comment than needed, but anyway the point is, Quips doesn’t equal great Spider-Man.

    The news woman didn't know Spider-Man was heading to Oscorp because the script said so. She knew because the Lizard was at Oscorp, and Spider-Man was clearly heading in the direction of Oscorp. Not in that particular shot, but considering Spider-Man seemed to be moving in the direction of Oscorp, Oscorp was evacuated, and the Lizard was inside of Oscorp at the time, it's not that hard to put the pieces together.
    Also, the point of the cranes was so Spider-Man could swing, and didn't have to wall-run. This movie was going in a more realistic direction, and Spider-Man can't do his classic swinging by shooting webs onto the side of buildings. There are a couple scenes that break that rule, but that was still the intention.
