If memory serves me correctly, Shaq went to the finals 6 times and won 4 but apart from that miss everything Unc said was spot on.
This was what Kobe used to always say. If Shaq would take his fitness seriously they would’ve won 10 championships.

It's funny because I've been seeing a bunch of hoopers that had amazing skill and potential sharing their deep regrets online lately. Basically acknowledging that they could've been in the NBA had they taken their gift more seriously. And I agree with alot of them

No matter what you do or don't do, the simple fact that you have to choose one thing over another (since you can't do everything) means that regrets are inevitable. Critical Thinking won't shield you from regrets in the same way that it won't shield you from death. Sure you can harness critical thought to live longer, but you will still die. And, you can use it to limit regrets but you cannot avoid experiencing regrets.
Every serious athlete experiences this kind of regret. I bet Jordan looks back at his years in baseball and thinks “I could’ve passed Kareem”… LeBron will look back at the Miami vs Dallas playoffs and think “I could’ve won that”. Thanks Shaq for being honest about what everyone thinks.

Ironically it was Phil Jackson who encouraged him to gain weight, because of the way the Refs were not calling fouls against him when he was in the paint. He told him to lift weights and get bigger so he could absorb the contact. Shaq got bigger and it was not necessarily just by weight lifting, it was because he chose to incorporate a bad diet and poor workout routines. He felt that he would get in shape when he went to training camp, rather than maintaining his conditioning during the offseason.

Watching old school film of Orlando Shaq transitioning into Laker Shaq you can see that at 7FT 300LB+ he really was a freak of nature. Dude could run coast to coast like a gazelle, grab rebounds and dominate in the paint just from size and power. Even the more underrated things like his handles were damn solid, It's a shame though his prime ended prematurely. If he had taken care of his body, he EASILY could've pass up Wilt in points to solidify him as the most dominant big man and probably pass up MJ and Kobe in points too.

Shaq just didn’t have that killer instinct drive that guys like MJ or Kobe had where it was work work work. And it’s still impressive with what all Shaq did but he could’ve done so much more. Shaq became a personality and I honestly think it took away from his game. Which is saying something cause even 80% of Shaq's potential and he is an arguable top 10 player. It's wild how many great players have one or two things missing that could have put them over the top. Giannis really can be what Shaq could have been. If he can stay healthy.
The Shaq conversation is so interesting because he’s in just about everyone’s Top 10 all time, in most people’s eyes the 4th or 5th best Center of all time, and yet there’s still a prevailing feeling that he never reached his true potential. Some of that is because its probably true, but some of it is because Kobe was maybe the most insane hardworking athlete ever so he skewed the “Shaq doesn’t try her enough” narrative to another level. But it’s interesting to me what his legacy will be 30-40 years from now as the details become less important to future basketball fans

Truth. In order to be the GOAT at anything, you have to sacrifice something. Whether it's cheeseburgers, or hanging out with friends, or hobbies or whatever you gotta give something up to be the absolute best. It seemed like Shaq enjoyed his life. Can't fault a guy for that.

I have been watching Basketball for over 40 years. I have never seen a player as unstoppable as Shaq. His speed, skill, and strength was amazing to watch! If he took his training seriously and worked relentlessly on his free throws, Kareem's record would have been broken a long time ago, and would be the G.O.A.T

As a casual kid hearing about basketball (not even watching) I Shaq O'neal was one of the first names I remembered. Maybe because of his cool name but he definitely had goat potential
That's something about LeBron that doesn't get talked about enough. He lives and breathes basketball. He's committed himself to basketball in a way that no other player in league history has, with how much he spends to keep himself in the best shape possible, how much work he puts in in the weight room, and how much work he put into his game.
He could've easily had a dominant career with just his freakish athleticism and natural gifts, like Shaq did. But he added every conceivable facet to his game that wasn't already there and became the arguable greatest player of all time when he still could've probably finished as a top 20-25 player ever without doing that

I think something that gets missed during these conversations is that there is a genetic component to mental attributes also. Maybe Kobe/Lebron/Michael have the 7 ft equivalent of determination that not everyone else had.

LeBron is truly great because he managed to enjoy his life similarly to how Shaq did, but he got as much out of his talent as he could by putting more work in than anyone not named Kobe (Kobe probably overtrained). Shaq should’ve realized he could still enjoy his life while putting in that work.

As a fan whilst it's frustrating that players can dip in and out of form, it makes the sport and the story so much more interesting. Shaq was a legend who entertained us off and an the court. Personally I wouldn't have wanted him to change to become an MJ because you'd lose one of the best characters the sport has ever had to offer.

People don’t understand the physical beating Shaq took night in and night out. Even though he was the biggest most dominating force ever those licks take a toll on you. He could’ve took his fitness a little more seriously towards the end of his prime but I think he came close to maxing out his potential. It’s impossible to be more dominant than he was in his prime. It was borderline illegal how dominant he was.

Shaq made 2 mistakes in his career.
1. Leaving Orlando, him and Penny would’ve had a clear path to the finals every year after the Bulls dynasty ended. Although Shaq and Kobe was more dominant as a duo, him and Penny had better chemistry and would’ve won more titles as the East was super weak in the early 2000s.
2. Not willing to stay in shape or improve on his game. Imagine how good he dominant would’ve been if he was fit like Hakeem, could make free throws consistently, and had a wide range of post moves.
