I LOVE JJs take, It drives me crazy when people don't understand that the illegal defense changes were far more important that the fouls. For the same reason, Kobe Bryant's career is horribly underrated, as the game took a while to adjust to the new rules and add a lot of shooters to space the floor, Kobe faced constant soft double and triple teams, something that Jordan just never had to deal with.

Best take of JJ’s career. I wish I could describe what I’ve been saying for years, but I’ve never played basketball at that level before. I appreciate JJ articulating this reality. I dare those guys from the 90s to play at this pace. Guys like Hakeem and MJ could have did it with others. Those guys and others took care of their bodies, which I don’t think the majority of the league did so like this before Kobe/Bron/Steph era. People love to talk about the 80s-90s as the best defensive eras, but it was really the early to mid 00s when Lebron was young. Watch those Pistons/Spurs/Pacer teams, they were barely allowing 90 pts per game. That Pistons/Spurs finals was basically a first to 80 pts series, and Bron was still averaging 30 during that period.
And there was zone defense compared to the times before where you had to stay on one man during the possession. Just a different way of playing

JJ brought up a very valid point about the pace of possessions. As an exercise science/kinesiology major, we learn that the leading cause of injury across the board is “wear and tear” and stress on the tendons/ ligaments (micro tears) without a proper and lengthy recovery. Your body needs proper and quality time to recover especially in joints with the ball and socket mechanism due to them having great mobility, but less stability. Exercise at a high intensity/pace day in and day out is incredibly taxing on the body even with proper strength and mobility exercises. You must also think about cartilage degeneration with repeated action over time. Staying healthy and on top of your game for as long as Lebron has is mind-boggling and many suspect him of taking/spending millions on researched steroids without significant adverse effects to enhance his recovery to an unprecedented degree.
So, that's why Jordan broke his foot in the 80s. Wear-and-tear amid a higher pace of play. Got it.

LeBron has 19 straight seasons with 25 or more points. 10x top 3 in ppg, 13x top 5 in ppg, 8 seasons in a row with the 2nd most total points, and later the 1st most points in the league. It's not longevity alone, but very high points per season as well.

Those same hall of famers that say the game is softer now won't talk down on how that would mean they would've been worse defenders if they couldn't use hand-checking and physical contact with their bodies to impede their opponent's progress. They don't talk about how fewer steals, blocks and rebounds they would have if they only had to rely on footwork, so I would take everything they say with a grain of salt. It goes both ways, by their logic, it's more difficult to play defense today because you rely strictly on your footwork so wouldn't that mean these defenders would be more elite if they played back then considering they would've not only had great footwork and athletism but also been allowed to use their bodies and hand-checking.
Agreed with JJ on this, I have also noticed that during 90's, while it's a bit more physical, there are many times the players are just standing doing nothing. The sports today have evolved to continuous movement which is more physically demanding long term. JJ somebody with a different insight of the game. Nice.

One thing that is not considered is that the league is way more talented now, and kids are playing basketball more and at earlier ages, which contributes to a lot of injuries in the game now. The fact that Bron has been able to play this long and be this good for this long is nearly impossible, and it’s a testament to his greatness
Also, the spacing that is given now allows for more points. Unlike in the 90's where you could hand check people. I think if the NBA continues like this someone will catch Lebron's scoring title eventually.

This is more of a recency bias issue. Younger fans think Lebron is a better scorer and that’s their right. I saw both their careers like Kobe’s. Just because Giannis is averaging more than KD and Steph, doesn’t mean he a better scorer. Those guys can beat you so many different ways. Giannis is all raw power, but to his credit his jumper has improved. I also think he deserves MVP or Embiid not Jokic.
I don’t agree with Russo, because Kareem’s scoring was limited to the blocks. MJ, Kobe and Lebron could score from anywhere on the court. In terms of big men and just putting points on the board in the paint, then it’s Wilt. Kareem played longer than Wilt. Lebron played longer than Jordan. Doesn’t mean they were better scorers, they just accumulated more points.
