I like the fact that you have the patience to let the movie reveal it's self in it's own time. I watched others get frustrated with the beginning because they don't understand, but the mystery is half the fun.
The frustration is also part of the experience, but you just have to roll with it.

I mean, that’s kinda the basic format of good story telling…to not give everything away up front. Otherwise, what’s left to tell?
I notice that with several reactors. It can be a little frustrating at times. I find myself wanting to yell, “Just relax & watch the movie,” at the screen, lol.

@@AwesomeUSMovies the movie asks us to think of life philosophy. You made us think of life logistics.
The matrix is about none of those things, but it sure likes to think it is.
What I don't like is the editing and half of the damn videos blurry you can't see nothing yeah watch this movie about a hundred times but damn he spent the first five minutes of video talking and now the rest of the video was blurred out stuff and you can barely see anything
The idea behind the true loves kiss was that it reminded Neo that the Matrix isn't real, like the spoon. The kiss reminded him that he wasn't in his real body, just an image of himself in the matrix. The rules don't conform to him because he believes they don't in that place, like Morpheus said. He has the ability to see and disbelieve beyond the others of the crew on the Nebuchadnezzar. When he came back to life he could see the Matrix for what it really was in it's complete entirety, just lines of code. The mind makes it real, but in Neo's mind he's just cemented the idea that none of it is real, including the bullets therefore he completely lets go in that moment. It just took Trinity reminding him what's really real (love) to get him back up. As long as his mind believes it's not real, it's not.
The fight scenes were choreographed by Yuen Woo-ping who is a legendary Hong Kong fight choreographer. The actors all trained for months. I remember walking into the movies and watching this on a whim with no idea of what it was about. Completely blew me away.

Blew allot of people away with it's concepts of where computers could eventually go.
I always remember the tv ad campaign “No one can tell you what the Matrix is, you have to see it for yourself.”
And it is totally true.
The Matrix was such an influential movie that all movies, shows, commercials.....all media types, are now separated into 2 categories: Pre-Matrix and Post-Matrix. It changed everything in the world.
There aren't more Inceptions but the director, Christopher Nolan, is the master of mind benders and you should definitely check out more of his movies: Memento, Tenet and The Dark Knight Trilogy(Batman).

ESPECIALLY Memento, by far my favorite from him (Inception is _proximal,_ the Dark Knight series bleeds merit over time, Interstellar is decent, haven't seen Tenet, The Prestige or Dunkirk).
Definitely do Batman Begins. Even though it rips-off most of the plot from The Shadow, it’s such a great film.
Tenet is one of the worst studio movies ever made, so your comments on that would be…interesting.
The leather and sunglasses was maximum cool factor in the late 90's.

YOIR BEST REACTION YET!!! I know you're a book guy; before filming, the Wachowskis had three books that were required reading for the cast to get an idea of what they were attempting to portray. The first one was "Simulacra and Simulation" by Jean Baudrillard. It was actually featured in the film. It was the hollowed out book that Neo retrieved a mini CD for one of his customers. The second book was "Introducing Evolutionary Psychology" by Dylan Evans and Oscar Zarate. The third and final book was "Out of Control: The Rise of Neo-Biological Civilization" by Kevin Kelly. It is my personal favorite and it changed my life. My Oprah moment if you will. :)

I've watched a lot of CZcamsrs react to The Matrix but you're the first person to ever mention what a "wet wall" is, and I've been wondering what it is for over 20 years since I first saw this movie! So thank you very much for that James! Cheers and best wishes!! A Fellow Iowan.

Using humans as batteries would be totally inefficient and make no sense at all.
However, in the original script they had a much cooler and more plausible explanation for why the machines kept humans alive. They weren't using them as batteries. They were using them as wetware... a giant interlinked neural net processor. They used their brains as millions of interlinked computers. This actually does make sense. And in addition it explains why the machines would want to keep the humans partially conscious with functioning brains, sedated obviously, but relatively content in their slumber. Otherwise, y'know, it would be a whole lot simpler just to make a Matrix out of people that had been lobotomized. Or... maybe out of cows.
However, at some point some exec thought the interlinked neural network idea was too complicated or hard to understand. So they changed it to batteries.
Although... the idea that the machines are using people as batteries is information we get from Morpheus, who is after all shown to be an imperfect narrator who doesn't know everything. So I prefer to believe that the original explanation is the true one and that Morpheus simply doesn't know what he's talking about.

Nope...both concepts are stupid. If they were using humans as extra processing power, it would be counterproductive to have them "dreaming" at all. And, it wouldn't be necessary. If they were going to do that, then they'd capture some people, test all their neurological performance, clone the best one, and leave them blank for their entire life. And it would still be pretty crap compared to any computer that can run true AI in the first place. They'd have zero need for it. The only real gain would be in parallel processing, which could still be done more efficiently just by making lesser non-AI processors that still far surpass our brains.
Every single thing about the Matrix is stupid. It's just a good action movie, and absolutely nothing more.
There's a similar idea in the TV show Dollhouse

The part where the chunk of stone falls off the pillar after the gunfight wasn’t actually planned or scripted, but they kept it in for effect!
Our buddy wanted to go and see this so badly, he paid for us to go that friday. There was barely anyone in the theater because it wasn't heavely promoted, and Frank knew that. It was so good we tried go the next night, but every movie house was packed! This movies set a new tone for cinematic greatness! Check out the Animatrix as well!

I second Animatrix. For anyone who don't know, it's an animated "movie" made up of several short movies made in different styles by different directors and independent stories about Matrix. My favorite is Matriculated.

I loved it!
The Wachowski sisters, who wrote and directed this, were actually the Wachowski _brothers_ back then; they both came out eventually. What was funny about this is that they didn't do so at the same time, so references/perceptions of them transitioned _twice,_ with going from "the Wachowski brothers" to "the Wachowskis" to "the Wachowski sisters". Go fig.
Weird
The original intention of the movie was to be a Trans metaphor but the world wasn't ready for that yet. Lily Wachowski confirmed it in an interview.

The sisters did great TV series called sense8. Thoroughly recommend it!
Whilst inside the matrix, the operators can only see code, they just got so good at reading it, they don't see code anymore, just what it is. There is a throwaway line in there mentioning it. So that fight between Neo and Morpheus, they were just looking at lines of code. You'd basically be an operator for how much you read hey?

This movie was ahead of its time. It lead the way for movies of this style and was a blockbuster movie. Now you see the concept used in many movies including Marvel Comics. Keanu Reeves and Lawrence Fishburne were amazing. Thanks for the reaction.

Forever a classic movie. So glad you enjoyed it. It's always so much fun watching someone see your favorite movies for the first time... just wish that I could forget the movies so that I could watch them again for the first time xD
This is by far my favorite movie and I’ve watched it more than I can count. But I never caught that “copper top” line, I just wanted to thank you for that 🙏🏻

I remember watching this in 1999 with my girlfriend, & my mom. It changed everything in the film industry, & while watching it you knew films were going to change.
I had the privilege of seeing this with my wife in a drive-in in 2001. Utterly awesome. All i could think at the time, as i sat there like 😮 for the whole movie, was (like Cornwallis in The Patriot):
"THIS.... will change _everything."_
And so it did.

I remember seeing this for the first time on television when I was 11. It absolutely blew my mind as a kid.

I did a paper on this movie for my Art of Film class in college. The thing I found most interesting is that for Neo to become the One (Neo is an anagram of One), he had to understand that nothing what so ever in the Matrix is real, not even himself. The "There is no spoon" concept and that he's just a disembodied mind. Then he can understand that his body could never take damage because it's not really there. He didn't have to contend with things like gravity or mass or momentum and he could do whatever his mind could conceive of, free of limitation.
Love that way of looking at it. Totally makes sense. I need to watch the second one

Especially this first Matrix movie is still a real classic and also thematically doesn't get old (obviously ;) ). The whole "simulation theory" topic is a really fascinating and interesting thing to think about, not only in movies but in general.
“Buckle your seatbelt Dorothy, because Kansas, is going bye-bye” is a reference to The Wizard of Oz (1939), which it sounds like you haven’t seen. It’s a must watch.

The marketing for this movies is GENIUS. Keep in mind that this was released at the cusp of Y2K. It was intriguing and captivating. AND the movie DELIVERED in spades!! Still stands test of time!

Bro. At the Kung fu Trainer part, We realized something. After long fighting, Neo sweats but Morpheous doesnt sweat. Because morpheous's Brain know that this is just computer simulation. But Neo's Brain still thinking that this is Real world. Because of this Neo sweats

This film was special because it pioneered new ways to capture the shots. They set up banks of cameras around the actors and they would start shooting offset in time from one to the next. There is probably a documentary on here about it.

Pretty sure this was the first Keanu Reeves movie I saw being that I was 8. Still is one of the coolest ones out there, especially for the 90s.
Same for me too, I think I was maybe 7 or 8 as well but it was a few years after it has released.
continuity point: when Trinity points her gun at the Agent on the roof with the helicopter & says "dodge this" she's pointing at his temple, on the side of his head. a fraction of a second later when she pulls the trigger he's facing her head on & flies backwards from the impact.
Continuity counter point., He turns his head. He can move fast enough to reorient himself in relation to Trinity, but not enough to also dodge
I think his whole body is oriented same as head in both
Neo does his bullet time thing then the Agent walks up to him, you can see his shadow on Neo. Frame on Agent saying "only human" & raising his gun. At this moment he's full on Neo. Trinity walks up, "dodge this" & gun to his left temple with him facing to her left. He does turn his head a bit then the frame changes to further back so we can see both of them. Now he's full on her, head & body aligned, at least 90° right of where he just was. She pulls the trigger & he flies backwards. It's a glitch.

This was the first R rated movie I ever saw in the theater. I'll never forget how cool I thought I was being able to see it lol. Great movie that changed the game completely.

maybe this will alleviate me of my nighttime worries, by finally writing it out. For the 2nd Matrix movie, my mom got tickets to an advanced screening. She got 4 of them, and didn't go, so it was Dad, My 2 friends, and myself. In the room they had free bottles of drinks like coca-cola, sprite.
During the movie I kept talking to my friend directly next to me. Not talky-talking, just muttering jokes, and he laughed the whole time so I kept doing it.
I feel bad because I've never done that in a theater, and I might have ruined someones experience.
but at the end of the night when we're dropping my friends off, I gave him 4 of the cokes I pocketed and that's the part he brings up when we hang out.

It's essentially the same concept as playing as Spider-Man in a video game.
The Wachowskis love Japanese anime (animation). The lobby scene shoot-out in this movie was inspired directly by the finale to the 1995 anime masterpiece Ghost in the Shell, which I've already recommended and is on your list. Worth checking out if you want to see where some of these ideas came from.

When the Oracle said, "sorry kid", she followed it with, "you got the goods (meaning he IS the one), but it looks like you're waitin' for something."
She told him he is the one, but like you, he heard only what he thought she was telling him.
He was waiting for love
Also in that scene, she says "You look like a man that is waiting for something."
"What?" Says Neo.
She replied with "Who knows, your next life maybe."
At the end of the movie, Neo dies, and Trinity brings him back to his next life.

I’m so jealous. I saw it on senior skip day in 1999. Was the most incredible movie experience I had ever had.
All of them are excellent. Original trilogy are earth shatteringly good though. Was one of those films came outta cinema and was like what did i just witness. Film history made infront of my eyes. Watch these films a good 2 or 3 times a year and never fails to entertain

When this movie came out it set a new bar for special effects. I watched it in the theater multiple times. And as a broke college student, that's saying a lot. Lol!

You know Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) from Captain America : The First Avenger where he was the villain Red Skull. He is also the elven king Elrond in Lord of the Rings, not sure if you have seen that yet.
When I watched this in the theater many people had a hard time wrapping their heads around what was even going on. And these days your Ex-Iowa-Farmer immediately goes to : "Oh, it's his avatar". How things have changed.
I prefer the original idea of having people connected in a giant neuronal network that runs the machines operating system or something like that but in reality there would be no reason for the machines to keep us alive. But then we wouldn't have a movie.
I think the sequels get worse and more and more convoluted but they do have some fun fight scenes.
So far there are no more inceptions.

I’ve seen an agent punch through a concrete wall. Men have emptied entire clips at them and hit nothing but air. Yet their strength and their speed are still based in a world that is built on rules. Because of that, they will never be as strong or as fast as you can be.
Neo: What are you trying to tell me, that I can dodge bullets?
Morpheus: No Neo. I’m trying to tell you that when you’re ready, you won’t have to.

It's got the woman who plays TRinity and is Christopher Nolan's (inception) first professional movie. Has the typical Nolan high concept ideas around time in an accessible Hollywood action film
Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) played Elrond (father of Arwen) in the "Lord of the Rings" franchise, V in "V for Vendetta", and Red Skull in the first Captain America film. He also did the voice of Rex in the excellent film "Babe" (I highly recommend this one for a farm boy like you).
That's Carrie-Ann Moss. Known primarily for this film. The film was directed by the then Wachowski brothers but both of them had sex-change operations so they are now, Lana and Lilly Wachowski.
Keanu Reeves was not the first choice -- it was Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee's son. Unfortunately, Brandon died during filming of "The Crow (1994)" and Keanu took the reigns.
Every now and then, a film comes along and change the way how movies are made. The Matrix is one of them. One, it opened the door to more films like Inception that challenges us to question our concept of reality. Second, this was the first use of "bullet-time" -- slow-motion done while the camera is panning/moving.
My only issue with this movie is that when someone is still hardwired to the Matrix, and they get shot, for instance, they're not really getting shot, just like they're not really getting shot when they've hacked in. So in order for them to die, the machines would have to send some kind of signal to their pod, to kill them. But when they're hacked in, they're no longer connected to the machines' system, so there would be no kill-signal sent, which means anyone should be invincible in the Matrix, once they have been unplugged.
well... maybe they just get jumped to another "area" body. The body is only programming so when an agent takes over they could just clone the body and move it.
@@AwesomeUSMovies I'm not sure what you mean, but I'm talking about when they die in the Matrix, I don't understand why they would die in real life, if they're no longer hardwired. I think it's just a concept that will raise the stakes, for the benefit of the story, but it doesn't make any sense.
I went and saw this movie on a holiday Monday...and then I called out sick from work the next day to GO SEE IT AGAIN!!! The only other movie I had ever done that with before was Return of the Jedi, but I did not need to call out from work because I was still in school, so I just ran to the theater as soon as school got out. ✌💯😁

Family got a DVD player in 2000. It came with 4 movies. Austin Powers Spy Who Shagged Me, Blade Runner, Matrix, and Lethal Weapon 4.
this was the only one I watched, and the "I know Kung Fu" is still my favorite.

This is the film where the Green Screen was created, and where they created the spin around shots. They used several Hero cameras encircling the scene to get those spin-around shots.

Wow, John Wick was the first Keanu movie you ever saw? I've been watching his for so many years. I guess Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure was the first time I really took notice of him.

As a teenager I absolutely loved this movie and tried to make my mom watch it she only lasted 15 minutes now as an adult I totally understand why my mom who hates violence hates it

Growing up with Keanu, it seems so strange that you know him from John Wick (his most recent movies). You should check out some of his early movies like "Bill and Ted" and "Parenthood". Both are fun comedies

The green " coding" are actually the set designers mothers japanese cooking recipes.
"The Matrix" supposedly comes from 30 or so pieces of claimed source material, but it is actually a mashup of just 3 movies:
"Remo Williams The Adventure Begins", "Scanners", and "Dark City".
These sources have never been admitted.
Remo includes the bullet dodging and the bend-over-backward dodge, running around on the ledges of tall buildings, and learning insane martial arts, waking up with a new face, and the costume from the climax is almost exactly the same thing Neo wears at the end, also the Internet on Neo's screen looks the same, but Remo is from before the Internet, so it should look weird and so that has to be an homage to original source.
Scanners has a secret organization that teaches people to hack reality.
Dark City has almost everything else, agents, a secret overlying all reality and even the rooftop sets used in the Matrix are from Dark City.
Heart O' The City Hotel is a very hard wink that we are literally in the heart of Dark City.
But the Wachowskis have never admitted it.
Man it’s been fun to see your movie journey, and can’t wait for you to see the rest of the series. They are all good as really it’s all one giant movie storey like load of the rings.

Fun Fact. The stunt team that worked on The Matrix created and are directing the John Wick movies. That why those movies have such great stunt work. You can find many Matrix easter eggs in John wick.

That Nokia phone was only available in Europe, except my group at AT&T had two of them to play with. We loved them but no US carrier decided to carry them.
FYI - Neo was able to come back because the Oracle gave him a “persistent cookie” :-)

@@AwesomeUSMovies About the phones? I was in on of the groups at AT&T Wireless that tested them back in the day. The great part was that I would get new phones in alpha, so I always had the latest, greatest phone - but they barely worked. We always kept a Nokia 2600 handy because we never knew if the latest, greatest would stop working. I went through a ton of phones that never made it to the US in the end. I even got to help design a device - the Ogo. Look it up on Wikipedia. I was on the design team.
When neo asks why his eyes hurt a d morphius says "you've never used them before" just clicked for me for the forst time lol

IN College my philosophy class was called the Philosophy of The Matrix. It was shot in Australia and the Oracle said Neo will become the one in another life.

The hint is that the oracle says he IS not the one - note tense! Then that he is waiting for something - what is left unsaid is that when he has that something, he WILL be the one.

Matrix is definitely a movie to watch at least once. A lot of people dismiss it because of the "not possible" argument, but as always with Sci-Fi it is not the tech ideas but the question of "What if?" that is crucial. We have reached a point in history where more and more people realize we don't even need to be hooked up to machines to be puppeteered as if we were and that is the philosophy of this movie.
Like the 3rd time out of many viewings, it finally sunk in that NEO was a hacker before he was taken out of the Matrix. He was already perfect for being the one...or subconsciously preparing himself...yeah, have fun with this one & avoid the 4th movie like it was a hybrid virus of corona & monkey pox! I had the same reaction in the theater at the ending when he flew away. Great Reactions, BTW!!!

While I did not get to see it in theaters, I did get to see it when it was first released on VHS and DVD. Absolutely loved this movie. The sci-fi story of a post-apocalyptic future where humans are all batteries and plugged into a machine that is feeding an imaginary world to keep us unaware while it harvests the energy we produce was such a unique idea to me at that time. I liked the performances, I like the black leather and emo/hacker attitude portrayed by the characters, and the ultimate villain in Agent Smith, as well as Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus. This is such as great film and the Wachowskis should have left the story alone with just the first film.
Didn’t care for the other Matrix movies but loved this one. Have you reacted to Devil’s Advocate yet? Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino are an incredible combination!!
This is in my top 10 of all time, what an amazing movie across the board!
Filmed in my hometown in Sydney! Australia, I Remember seeing the helicopters with stunt men dangling from harnesses flying over the city.., it was amazing to watch… Great reaction! Go answer the phone !! go answer the phone!!

Dark City ( 1998 ) if the matrix was The Sandlot then dark city would be Stand by Me . Different but also pretty similar . The matrix even reused some of the dark city set . Now that I think about it like stand by me , dark city also has keifer sutherland 😂

This was such a radical movie when it came out. Nothing like it during its time. That kind of feeling is impossible with how things are today even if it’s your first time seeing this. Maybe would have been nice to see this before the John Wick movies because the nostalgic feeling seeing the actor Fishbourne and Keanu was amazing even though the stories between movies have no similarities. You're going to hear a lot of mixed messages about the sequels to these films...
IMO the trilogy is worth watching. Even if the later two films are not quite as original and inventive as the first one (how could they be), in my own humble opinion, the second film (Reloaded) is as good as the first especially in terms of the visuals and action set pieces which far exceed the original. Great style. The highway chase scene is intense. But a lot of people didn't like the 2nd movie for being too long, complex, wordy, confusing, improbable, or weighed down by philosophical and verbose mumbo jumbo especially in the film's climax. Other people disliked it because they felt it betrayed how the first film ended in order to keep the stakes artificially high. And still more people disliked it because they thought it spent too much time in the human world of Zion and there was a sweaty naked sort-of club dancing scene that stretched on.
The third film (Revolutions) ... IMO has good and bad things about it. The climactic battle inside the Matrix is pretty intense, though not the way that a lot of people wanted to see things go. The attack on Zion shown in the film... and some other choices they made... eh... let's just say that there was a lot of criticism about these things and some was fair. But it's not a bad way to conclude the trilogy in my subjective opinion. I can understand that other people would have liked to see it end differently, or just end more ambiguously the way the first film wraps up. And... also at this point they really seem to have shot their load in terms of creative visuals and action scenes in the first two movies, because the ones in part 3 you can tell they were trying to do some different things but it just feels gimmicky and doesn't land. The final fights both in and out of the Matrix have a lot of questionable CGI so there's that, too. But if you like these movies I would still give it a watch.
The 4th film, released much later and down one Wachowski sibling (Resurrections), is almost universally regarded as terrible. Though they did do some things with it more creative than what we got in the 3rd movie... I think almost everyone would agree it's best left unwatched. Whether you prefer how the 1st film or 3rd film wrapped things up both of those endings were superior to how the 4th left things. And... well... if you make it through 3 then you'll probably see how it's confusing that they would even bother making a 4th film.
Much of the hate aimed at parts 2 and 3 are born out of a bit of misdirected anger by people who overhyped the first movie, or just had unrealistic expectations going in. Or they are nit-pickers bent on hating everything. But that always happens.
Pretty fair and thorough analysis without giving anything away. A lot of people didn’t understand the philosophical message in the second one, and a lot of those who did didn’t like it for a specific reason I won’t say. But, I mean, it follows logically from what’s revealed in the first, imho.
I think I'll watch them regardless of perception.
@@AwesomeUSMovies I really loved these films, even if I had to watch some breakdown videos to explain it all to me. 😆 There are two guys who call themselves Cinema Therapy here on CZcams who did a really good analysis of this trilogy’s philosophies about seven months ago that I recently watched. Definitely worth checking out.
@@BDogg2023 yeah there is a ton of philosophy, religious symbolism, etc etc hidden in these movies. I had a friend who took a college course once on nothing but the Matrix. ha.

I'm so glad you liked this one. I've seen a few other people react to it and, while they liked it, their reactions were kind of lukewarm at best. You seem to be the exact audience that the film was made for. I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out and had pretty much the exact same reaction you did, going from confused to "enlightened" along with Neo. Back then, the advertising for the film simply asked "What is the Matrix?" and told you nothing about the film, so everyone was going into the theater as blind as you did.
There are four films in total. The first three make up a trilogy that tells a complete story. The fourth film is interesting for the direction that the story takes. The other films are also worth watching, though they don't deal with quite the same philosophical questions that the first one does so they feel more like straight action films. They also tend to get quite confusing about the actual Machines vs Humanity plot so they can be a little difficult to follow. However, they're visually impressive and fun but just not as deep as the first one.
You mentioned that you didn't recognize the name Hugo Weaving. He played Agent Smith, and you'll see him again when you get around to watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Yeah, no. The next two films are waaaaayyyy deeper than the first. It’s why most people don’t get them and don’t like them. That and the bloated action scenes.

@@AwesomeUSMovies He was Elrond, the elf leader, in LOTR. He’s also most well known as the voice of V, in V For Vendetta, another amazing film that everyone should see, especially in these times.
@@AwesomeUSMovies Weaving played Elrond in Lord of the Rings. He was the father of Arwen and the one who got the line proclaiming that the group was the Fellowship of the Ring.
I love that you finally checked out this movie and enjoyed it. It's too bad you didn't see this earlier on; it was funny hearing you say how this reminded you of Inception, when...! Also, you were sadly robbed of the experience we all got with the 'wow' factor of sitting there watching the John Wick series and suddenly 'Morpheus' shows up. Your kids should have known better, lol, and made you watch one definitely before the other ;)
