"That's not fair!" he says about a twist in a competition for children to fight to the death.
KATNISS is a plant, the roots can be boiled similar to potatoes. In the books her father is coined for saying "If you have yourself you'll never go hungry.
PRIMROSE is a flower.
Awesome call outs from the books. You’re a Sharp Girl (see what I need is there 😉)
Can confirm
@@PatrickStewart316 she got the knife when the girl threw it at her
The knife wasn't in the backpack, it's the one that she blocked; it went into the backpack and so she gained herself a weapon/tool.😉
So technically it was ‘in’ the backpack but not in the backpack;)😂
@@ajandrianjafymusic "on" the backpack
@@gailseatonhumbert dude the knife was thrown and got embedded into the backpack therefore it was in the backpack

You have to remember that Hamish won the Hunger Games once himself and no doubt has some PTSD. but he's also had to mentor and watch tributes from his district die every year since then. No wonder he drinks.
very good point!
Also, Haymitch won his games (a special version with 48 tributes instead of 24) by taking advantage of the force field around the arena. He noticed that if you threw rocks at it, they bounced straight back at you. At the end of his games, Haymitch was badly wounded and the girl who was left threw an axe at Haymitch. He ducked and when it hit the force field, the axe bounced back and struck the girl in the head, making Haymitch the winner. The Capitol felt Haymitch had won unfairly and in retaliation, killed his girlfriend and his entire family. That's why he was warning Katniss that they don't take these things lightly. Between that and watching his tributes, who had no chance, die quickly year after year made him turn to drinking. When Haymitch saw he finally had tributes with some hope of winning, he cleaned up his act. There's one scene where a servant is about to fill his glass with more alcohol and Haymitch puts his hand over the glass to prevent it. Easy to miss but it was an important sign of the changes in Haymitch.
Yeah Katniss's plan was just to blow up their supplies, that way they have to spend more time foraging etc rather than hunting other tributes. Also that puts Katniss at an advantage because she's skilled at living in the woods whereas the tributes from the richer districts would be less practiced.
May the odds he ever in your favor. ✌️
The woman in the crazy outfits is named Effie. She is their escort. Also I want to mention the second installment my favorite of the books and movies. In my opinion the second film one ups the first.
Second one coming Monday
I want to thank you….
He’s not in this movie (comes up in the next), but Finnick is the character I named my dog after…
he died in my arms just a few hours ago. I live alone, so watching your videos is like having a friend with me.
Thanks.
My heart goes out to you and Finnick. It was such a great name for a dog. I'm so sorry for your loss.
So sorry for your loss, Meg. ❤
@@sharpgirl72 I named him that cause he was the only dog out of 100 that made it out of the shelter alive that week.
I’m so sorry make sure to keep pictures and cherish them

I think they did great job casting the characters from the books to the movies.
Liam Hemsworth is Chris Hemsworth’s brother, aka THOR
Regarding the hand symbol: "it means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love"
The books were commissioned by Scholastic Books to teach middle school students about politics and war. There is another series for younger students The Underland Chronicles.
Interesting thanks
There any kind of analysis out there on how well they executed this pupose?
"What do they do with the bodies?" It's explained in the book but not really addressed in the movies. The Capitol collect them, picking them up in (practically invisible) ships along with any weapons left with them as soon as anyone else moves away. That's why Katniss had to go and grab the bow off of Glimmer so quickly, before it was taken away. When she was putting Rue to rest she couldn't really stray away too far to stop them collecting her.
And if I remember correctly, if the body is in good condition, they'll send it back to their home district so the family can have a proper funeral. Keyword, IF.
Re your question about where Katniss learned her archery: it's not explained in the movies at all, but her dad taught her that when she was really young, before he was killed in a mining accident. Hunting in the woods surrounding District 12, is illegal (that's why Katniss keeps her bow and arrows hidden in the woods), and that's why District 12 is fenced off, and the fence is supposed to be electrified (hence the "High voltage" sign), but it's not, because the authorities are not that bothered to waste the power on the poorest district, which 12 is. Peacekeepers in District 12 are also really corrupt, and often just coudn't be a*sed to do a proper job, so they Katniss quite frequently even sold her game to them (note how in the beginning, in the woods scene, Gale asks her what she would do with a deer, and Katniss says "I'd sell it... to the peacekeepers").
Good info thanks, I don't remember that from the books
Liam Hemsworth is Chris Hemsworth's(Thor) brother.
That's what I came to say. 👆🏼
Oh that's interesting
Just read the books for the first time in the past 6 months. Finished the movies last week. They have been adapted surprisingly closely. So glad you started watching these now.
I agree. The only changes they made were to account for the difference between the fact that in the book, it's Katniss' POV whereas the movies are done as a third person POV
James, having read the books I’m not surprised that there was a lot you didn’t recognize. While the story is the same, it’s easy to manipulate details in a movie to make it more watchable. Visuals inspire you the way that the cinematographer wants them to. Kind of like the game makers.
Agreed
Suzanne Collins is the writer. On the audiobook version of this she gives an interview. She says she worked in television and drew from her experiences of that world with those people.
Katniss is the hero, to be sure and created the spark to light a rebellion, but Rue was really the catalyst or martyr that ignited the entire situation that allowed it to blossom and take hold. If katiniss had not taken the time to honor Rue (in the midst of a fight for her life) and taken time to protect her, none of that wouldve happened. The people noticed and began to actually fight back
The women in the fancy getups is Elizabeth Banks. I think she mostly does check flicks but she was in a couple Spiderman films and Seabiscuit which was really good. True story about the famous triple crown hose winner.
She played the second wife of Seabiscuit’s owner. Seabiscuit never won the Triple Crown. He never even raced in any of the 3 Triple Crown races. You may be mistaking Seabiscuit for War Admiral who’s the rival horse in the movie. War Admiral won the Triple Crown in 1937.
It’s a great movie. I wish people would react to it.
Imy favorite scene is when she shots the arrow at the apple in the pigs mouth.
These movies are so good I know I'm gonna enjoy every week watching them with you
I love the Hunger Games series, and I just want to tell you how much your reaction means to me. It may sound really weird, but you have the same inflection when commenting on the movie as my dad. He passed away over 10 years ago, and we never got to see these films together. I feel so comforted by your reaction. It's real and genuine.
The kids names are put in the bowl every year from 12-18 in the districts and it's cumulative.
If you are poor and starving you can opt to put your name in more times in exchange for grain and oil. You can do this for every member of your family.
There are five members in Gale's family and he's been getting them all grain and oil since he was 12.
That's why his name is in so many times.
It also divides the people within the districts against each other. Those who are better fed and don't have to put their names in more often vs. the starving.
District vs district, rich vs poor
All a distraction to divide each other and prevent them from uniting.
Jennifer Lawrence, Is from Louisville Ky. Josh Hutchinson is also from Ky. Katnis, and Peeta.
Great editing there, James. That scene with Peeta talking about his crush, then you cut to her angrily elbowing him to the wall, seriously, that's pro editing there.
And speaking of "I've read the books..." and stuff... I know you mentioned way back that you'd read The Firm and that you "know the story" 'so why bother'... but I can not beGIN to implore you, lol... PLEEASE watch the movie. And I'm not even a Tom Cruise or book or book author fan, I just think it's a well made movie. Sure, you know the 'story', but that's what makes cinema, well, cinema. The choice of cuts, the music, the lack of music, the tight close-ups, why a wide shot is used, why a camera sits on a persons face even when they've finished talking... or cuts away. It's one of those movies that I've honestly lost track of how many times I've watched it. Just seeing how a director can juggle so many characters, and yet you hardly notice the 'choreography' of it all. Nothing like Hunt for Red October (another film where multi locations and characters are effortlessly weaved together) that you already watched. You don't have to watch it... but I hope you just consider the points I've raised in approaching this movie, or any movie for that matter; honestly, I'd hate for you to overlook this one 'just' because you've read the novel already. Did I mention pleeease? lol.
- still subscribed and always will be :)
Thanks I'll take a look
Enjoyed your reaction, like always. It's funny that after seeing this movie a number of times, it wasn't until this reaction that I noticed the game maker is Jamie from "Yellowstone". If you haven't seen that show, I (a random stranger in the comments) would recommend it if you like cowboying and ranching.
A great series of movies & books!!! Sadly Philip Seymour Hoffman who shows up in the 3rd movie passed away before the final movie.
Can’t wait to see your reactions the sequels. Your son being into archery was cool to learn as well . As a writer myself, I am intrigued about your Novel. :)
Thanks Quincey, lots more to come
@@AwesomeUSMovies For the 2nd one, I hope you pick the IMAX version (if available). So good.
James really engages with his patrons so it's a pretty rewarding Patreon.

The only Thanksgiving movie I can think of is "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" with Steve Martin and John Candy. Hilarious!! ✈🚂🚙🦃
Already reacted to it. Go check it out!
Congratulations to your son on competing at Nationals!! My brother took archery for his phys ed requirement in college and continued using it as a hunter.
It's a great talent to learn
20:26 in case I didn’t comment on this the first time I watched, I’d love videos where you talk about your novel! Or at least how it’s going. Maybe you can also have a channel of book reviews? Either way, you’re one of my favorite reactors here on YT, so thank you for sharing with us - and your positive attitude.
Thanks, make sure you check out my Q&A videos. I talk about books and things each time.
Liam Hemsworth is Chris's brother. Chris Hemsworth played Captain Kirk's dad and Thor.
Great reaction! Can't wait for the next one 😁
Another great reaction!!! Well done sir!!!
Thanks
Dont think it was mentioned in the movie, but if i remember right, the eyes of those dogs were the dead tributes eyes
3:05 | Liam Hemsworth (who plays Gale) is Chris Hemsworth's brother. Chris is also an actor, I imagine a little better known, and maybe you know him as Thor in the Marvel universe. Maybe that's why the familiarity??
That's his brother??? cool fact!
I haven't read all the comments and maybe someone told you already, but the ways you can get your name in is with your age (first year is one time, second year is 2 times, third year is three times etc) and you can also put your name in more times in exchange for grain and oil for each member of your family, per year. So Katniss would put her name in 3 times for herself, her mother and her sister, on top of the ones that are automatically in. Gale's number is high (42) because he has his mother, 2 brothers and a sister
very interesting thanks!
I used to do archery and it drives me crazy how she's always raising her elbow, even in the promo shots. 😂Other than that the movies are surprisingly good. I'm looking forward to your reaction to the sequels, they're even better.
Next one coming Monday
I do love these movies, perhaps more than the books (and that’s not something I say often)! It may be because the books are YA lit, but it may also be due to the stellar casting and amazing set design/visual effects. Thanks for your great reactions - highly enjoyable, as always! November is going to be FUN!
The books were published by Scholastic Books to teach middle school students about politics and war. Not exactly "YA"
3:19 Liam is the younger brother of Chris Hemsworth, an even more famous actor, who plays Thor in the Marvel franchise.
Liam hemsworth is related to Chris Hemsworth how played Thor
"Give her her pin back" you mean the "lucky" one that "protects you from anything bad happening" but actually was very unlucky and got Primrose selected against pretty big odds in the first place?. the movies were pretty good, the books even better (which is usually the case)
Fun fact: Josh Hutcherson (Petta) is 5’5” and Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) is 5’9”.
*Peeta
Oh how I wish Hollywood would just let tall women be TALL already.
Read the books and watched the movies and there just great !!! Fun fact I can remember the plot and characters of every book or movie I have read or watched but I don't remember the people I have met last week 😂
For a while now, I've been thinking a lot about the Minotaur and its Labyrinth. Just for fun. I wonder if the tributes for the Labyrinth were selected similarly.
If you like the Hunger Games Movies. I highly suggest you check out and watch The Maze Runner Movie Trilogy. They are another future dystopian series which in my opinion is action packed, great story and characters as well. I personally love it and find it more entertaining then this series but I still like the hunger game movies as well. 😊
You recognize the Boy Scouts salute.
Yup, a few relatives are eagle scouts.
haha.. I was literally just watching an older reaction of yours and saying.. man I cant believe he hasnt done hunger games yet.... illuminati confirmed lol . Interstellar is a great one I recommend if it hasn't been recommended yet
I have the book series but haven't got around to reading them. The films are pretty good.
As for your book, just keep writing. It took about 5 years to get my first book finished with a false start and rewrite, plus all the editing. The second book has turned into a monstrous difficulty with two moves due to landlords deciding to sell, losing my private office space in the last move, dealing with long Covid, and several other life-interruptions, plus parts of my plan for the series not turning out how I anticipated in book 2 requiring some rethought. You just have to push through. When you get a finished book in your hands, it is a good feeling, but it is a lot of work.
I have I think 3 novels currently "in the works" but one of them is very promising so that's getting all the attention.
@@AwesomeUSMovies same here. My dark fantasy series (seven books maped out by scene, one book out in the world, second one in the works and getting most of my attention), a second dystopian series, first book partially written (probably two books, one covering the fall of society from its heights to total collapse, second one deep in the collapse and disentigration/attempt to regroup), then there is a two to three book Middle grade novel series (the first book planned out by chapter). Then there are a dozen or so ideas they may never go anywhere. That's probably how it is for most writers. Let me know when yours is done and ready to go out into the world, I'd be interested.
You probably recognize the name Liam Hemsworth because his brother is Chris Hemsworth who plays Thor in the MCU
One thing that annoyed me to no end, is how they took away what happened to Peeta. In the book, he lost a leg. But I guess that was too much reality for the movie. So they ended up taking away both a show of Peeta's real strength and disability representation.
Liam Hemsworth is Chris Hemsworth’s (Thor’s) brother lol
Is there a polite way to fight for your life?
A good movie to react to would be Deepwater Horizon, it's based on a true story and an amazing movie
if you want to know how the Games started there's a prequel film in production starring Peter Dinklage as the original architect of the Games.
What is it called?
@@AwesomeUSMoviesThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Due out end of 2023.
Its not staring Peter dinklage, but it is a great cast includng him, viola Davis, and hunter shaufer.
Love the books and movies ❤
Happy to hear it, watching all of them this month
I read these books as well. I liked the movies a lot. Still prefer the books though.
The three fingers I always took as a sign of respect
No sure if it's respect or solidarity. I'm sure it's just a big F U to the overlords.
@@AwesomeUSMovies its like a funeral symbol. It basically means see you never/respect
I recommend reading the books before watching the movies it makes more sense when you can make connections between the two
I have read all the books, it was just 15 years ago.. lol too long to remember much
Sorry I realized that but it’s weird when you read it and can make the connections especially in the newest book but reading isn’t for everyone I personally have them on audiobook for a better understanding but I do feel like they left some things out of the movie that they had in the books but I guess all movies are like that and I mainly said that for those that only have watched the movies and haven’t read the books lol
3 fingers is for District 13, a district that doesn't exist anymore because it was destroyed.
Its actually a funeral symbol specific to district 12, which is why its such a big deal that the residents of district 11 do it back in solidarity when rue dies
It's an old rarely used symbol of goodbye use at funerals.
I first saw Jennifer Lawrence in the movie Winter's Bone. It is really good but I don't know how many views you would get reacting to it.
I love this movie!! The only thing that bothers me is that when Rue died, there wasn't a canon boom for her????
I believe that they did even though we didn’t hear it. Plus it’s basically the Capitol’s fault for the uprising because when Katniss placed the flowers around Rue, it made people sympathize with her.
Hello there, I have not seen any of these. I'm looking forward to this.!
Hope you enjoy!
I read the books after enjoying the movies.
The girl throwing knives, you should watch her in Orphan.
I'm sure people have already said that's Chris Hemsworth's brother speaking of which are you ever gonna get back to the MCU?
Fun Fact for you, James:
Jennifer Lawrence is BFF's with Lenny Kravitz's daughter, Zoey
So, whenever she'd speak to him between takes, she'd address him as "Mr. Kravitz" instead of his first name, and she'd gotten a lot of flack from her other costars about this
Hey James, since you've read the books, you'll definitely notice a lot of differences between the books and the movies
Your talk of archery reminded me of high school gym class. We were split up one day, the boys playing baseball and the girls doing archery. Baseball is stupid so archery sounded way cooler. I begged but they wouldn't let me do the archery. Doesn't archery seem more like a manly sport? You'd think the boys would be allowed to do it.
Happy Halloween to you and your family from me and my family
Same to you!
Good movie. Good books.
I still see Woody Harrelson as Woody from Cheers.
I get that
So stunned in my retro binge-watch to see him in the credits of the season 4 premiere.
Love this series n your channel, you should watch the fast and furious franchise after this 1
I've reacted to the first F&F franchise, need to watch the rest
Oh I forgot I already watched that aha
These are all good. Jen law is amazing. Only thing I didn’t get is, why would you team up with people you gotta kill. There is only 1 winner.
Power in #'s I guess. Nobody is going to attach a group of 4
If you're interested in how the games came to be and who thought a lot of it up read Of Songbirds and Snakes. Be warned it is not a happy story.
Oh I'm sure of it
Now you got to watch the next one cause there is several of them it's a series

"what do they do with the bodies?"
well...in the book, the organisers pick them up the moment no one is watching and take them away, use genetic manipulation and turn them into horrible half-dog monsters meant to hunt down and kill all the surviving tributes.
seems plausible
The remove the bodies because while there are no rules cannibalism doesn't play well in the Capital.

Hi
Crazy premise! Manipulation at its worst!
I have a funny experience when we watched this movie at the theaters... People had their pictures taken with me because they said I looked like Katniss. 😅😂
Fun!
Not exactly a movie I expected for today. Based on your description maybe Nov.7th would have been a better date to upload this.
His post did say starting with Oct 31st...possibly because of Thanksgiving week? I imagine he won't want to film during the days of family celebration.
Don't forget to vote, America.
One city with overreaching power over all the rural communities... The reason that we have an electoral college to prevent the exact same phenomenon in the US
26:00 SO much racist stupidity about this poor character and young actress
I'm confused? How is this racist? Was it my question about how the game makers are removing all the bodies?
@@AwesomeUSMovies Not you or in casting; entirely a bunch of viewers' reaction to the character on-screen. To listen to them, they couldn't see Rue as somebody "vulnerable", "cute", "tragic", etc. ENTIRELY because she was Black, despite the fact that if they'd bothered reading the damn book she was all along. The backlash resulted in the actress getting harassed too despite being a freaking child, and remains a stain on this film's legacy to this day. Even before the 2016 election, if anyone needed any basic proof that something is deeply wrong within the American people, this movie's reaction is a good example.
The hunger games? Really?
Your channel name should be above this....
Have you read the Lord of the Rings books? Or the Harry Potter books? Those would be fun to see you react to reading the book then seeing the movie. :)
Yes, I've both read and seen all the HP & LOTR books/movies.
