    I've used synthetic ox gall to help with the flow and now they act more like my sennlier, you mix the synthetic ox gall (4 or5 ) drops with 8 Oz of water you can paint this solution onto your paper and let dry or you can have it mixed up in a container to dip your brush in after you have rinsed it and one last way and I use this way on Daniel smith paints in my pallette is to put a drop or two of the mixture to soften those paints up because I hate that DS paints dry so hard and get flakey and I'm not going to destroy my Sable brushs on them just to lift out of my pallette!
    sorry for this long post 😊

      Don't be sorry, I appreciate the info! I think my Mission Gold paints will go to my daughter, or be used for less fluid work... Luckily I have paints that work better for my personal needs. And yes, the Daniel Smith ones do dry hard... I always spray them with water before... That's def a plus for Sennelier, Qor and M. Graham. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      I use ox gall with my mission gold (pure pigment set) of watercolors. I thought I was the only person in the world that has a problem with Daniel Smith watercolors.lol! You can added a couple drops of glycerine to DS it helps, but for the price I feel they should paint with out me adding product. My personal favorite watercolor paints are M. Graham, they work very well with my Sable brushes. I love to use Winsor & Newton iridescent medium for a little sparkle. Also, when I'm painting with colors I find are not easy to lift, I use W&N Lifting Preporation. Just add a few drops to clean water and paint on...let dry...and paint with our fear of a stray drop of color ruining your art.

    Another great review Irit! I have a smaller Mijello Fusion palette and love it. When I bought it, there was a peacock blue tube inside and it was so vibrant I didn't know what to think at first. I've come to appreciate its vibrancy. I guess it's like all art materials, there's no bad ones. I just have to play with them for a while to find their best use for my style or they take me somewhere new I wasn't expecting. Thanks for the review and comparisons.

      Hi Eveline! Yes, if there's one thing to be said about these, is that they are bright. I do want to play some more with them and get to know them better. As you said, one has to work with ones supplies and get to know them, I completely agree. I also got some Qor paints recently, and at first wasn't that impressed, but the more I use them the more I enjoy them. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      I'm glad you're finding this helpful! How are you enjoying the St. Petersburg ones? If you're interested in learning more, I think there's an interesting class coming out soon by Angela Fehr for crafters. I hope I will feel confident enough one day to share my watercolor journey with CZcams ;) xoxo

      My St. Petersburg ones have not arrived yet ... they seem to be on a slow boat from the UK LOL; I am trying to be patient LOL! thanks for the info about the class by Angela Fehr; I don't know her work but will go and research. Judging from your two recent IG posts, I would say your watercolour "fun" is more than CZcams shareable (is that a word LOL) - they were beautiful. xoxo

      Hi Dawn! I would also suggest trying Qor (by Golden). The individual tubes are really expensive, but the sets are a good value for money, and the colors really seem to explode on paper when water is added. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I use them to make gouache like paintings. I mix titanium white gouache with the paint to make a diluted gouache. This works well for illustrations I scan. I find them super pigmented. I also use them for urban sketching.

    If you like flow you must try Qor if you haven't already. They explode like fire works. I love this characteristic. Could be because they use a different binder than everyone else. I just got mine and I'm in love.

      Susan I know! They are so fun to play with! My favorite is the high chroma set. I actually used some to see what mixes I can get with a new paint I got (not Qor) in a recent video on my channel, and that poor new paint was just chased around the paper by the Qor paints. Def something to take under consideration when using a mix of brands, but I do enjoy them and have some on my custom palette. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I enjoyed this video as well as a couple of your other videos I've watched. Thank you for your effort :) how would you compare this to White Nights? I'm actually contemplating whether to get the Mission Gold, Holbein or White Nights. They're all about the same price here where I live..

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 7 lety +2

      I guess it depends on the set, and whether you care about pans or tubes. All three are great. I like different things in each brand. Mission gold 36 tube set is great value. I love their pinks. The blues are not that great IMO. All too turquoise and bright for me, and the ultramarine is for some unknown reason a mixture of 2 pigments. Holbein is fantastic. I'm in love with a few of their colors (like bright rose), but I don't have a whole set, just some tubes (love their cobalt violet light, mineral violet, horizon blue, mind you, some of those are also mixtures of pigments). The white nights 36 full pan set is great value, the colors are vibrant and beautiful. I do miss that wow pink in their range, like Holbein's bright rose or W&N opera rose, but one can easily just add that instead of a less used color. My gut reaction would be Holbein, but I'm not sure there's any logic behind it, and it comes down to personal preferences. All 3 great choices for sure! Hope this helps and if you have any more questions I"m happy to try and answer :)

      Yes I can imagine they would work well for detail work. That's why it's always important to see who's reviewing and if their style is similar to yours. If you want a higher flow in your paints, use oxgall. Some brands have natural oxgall, (warning: pretty gross fact ahead) which is made from the liquid in cow gall bladders. If you are vegan or just dont like the premise of using cow gall bladder juice in you paintings you can buy synthetic oxgall by Qor. Just add a drop to your water jars, and you're good to go!

      Yay! I'm hoping to get atmospheric flowers at some point to complete my collection. I admit I have no idea what I used it. By the way the color moves it doesn't look like great quality. Also it's just a spiral bound that I took out the pages once done, it's not really a sketchbook... Sorry! Doesn't seem like you're missing much though 😉

      Irit Landgraf it looks like a handbook spiral journal. I’m using the Khadi now and just got the giant one! I like the rough paper. I also love the Canson watercolor spiral journals. I do some paintings that I frame but for the most part I work in journals just painting for myself. I mostly only frame pieces I Exhibit in Gallery shows.

    Is there any kind of watercolor for beginners which is also nicely flowing like the Daniel Smith's? Or do I need to buy the more expensive artist colors for that pupose? Which brands have the same effect as the Daniel Smith ones? Thanks for your help!

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 3 lety

      I'm not sure what you mean... I have found that flow, besides the exception of Qor that are notably more pushy when combined with other brands, is more connected to pigments than brands. Meaning that certain pigments tend to flow better than others due to the nature of the pigment, size of particles etc. One can add ox gall to increase flow. If you have particular demands perhaps buy a half pan of one color you use often, like a primary blue or yellow with the same pigment from two or three brands that are readily available to you and compare which ones you enjoy most 😃

    • @Eifelwicht

      @@iritlandgraf Meine Frage auf den Punkt gebracht: Sie haben in dem Video ja die Mijello Mission Gold getestet und gegen Ende des Videos verglichen und festgestellt, wie leicht die Farben von Daniel Smith ineinander flossen und wie schwer sich hingegen die Mijellos mit dem Fließen taten. Da ich gerne leichte Blumen-Aquarelle malen möchte, bei der die Farben ineinander fließen und alles in Richtung abstrakt geht (also mit etwas Kontrollverlust ;-) ), frage ich mich, welche Marke Aquarellfarben (außer denen von Daniel Smith) dazu geeignet sind, denn die Mijellos scheinen es ja nicht zu sein.
      Herzlichen Dank!

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 3 lety +1

      This is a really old video, and I gave away that mijello set years ago, so possibly my opinions also changed and my style of painting. I use daily a combination of Daniel Smith and other brands such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Lukas and Qor and they all work well. I have used Sennelier, white nights and aquarius for years and they perform well as well. So to me all those brands are quite comparable. Flow depends mainly on pigment, combination of pigments (so a pushy paint combined with a "weak" paint will give you a different result than two pushy paints or two not so pushy) and the amount of water used, so for example one paint from Daniel Smith will have much better flow than another from Daniel Smith (like Nickel Azo yellow- very pushy paint). All the brands mentioned are great. If you want to increase flow you can add ox gall to your watercolors. Bottom line there's no one brand that works better than others in my opinion. It's finding a combination of pigments and learning to balance them and water ratio together.

    Thanks for the great review :) I bought mine a few weeks ago and I love working with them! I personally have no problems with the way paint flows, compare to other brands. But I think since the paint is almost too strong that could be the reason why many feel that way. Maybe you need more water because the paints are thicker?? Not sure if that's the right word.. But again, since the colors so strong if I just add more water and that's fine with me haha

    I just bought this today (7/12/21) on Amazon for $58. I'm so excited, mostly for the palette! I've used up all my 24 7ml set I got for Christmas 2016 so I was ready for more. I've already planned to replace the weird mixtures like yellow ochre, burnt sienna, ultramarine, etc with my M Graham single pigments for better mixing. The multi pigment greens and oranges don't bother me but the staples I've listed definitely make a difference when it comes to mixing.
    As for the flow, they don't contain oxgall. I've got QOR if I want highly flowing paints. These work great when you're being intentional with your work.

    Thank you Irit! This was very helpful. I just bought Mission Mijello paints but haven't used them yet. I like to work very loose and it sounds like these aren't the right paints for that. In your opinion what is the best brand to use for loose florals? I have several kinds of watercolors, like Prima, Altenew, and Pelikan. What do you recommend for loose florals? Thank you so much!!! Love all your videos.

    • @iritlandgraf
      @iritlandgraf  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Renee! I think what would work best is to find the right colors. Within each brand there are colors with stronger flow, also some brand will push aside other brands. So thing which colors you'd like to be the pushers and try to find the right ones. I use for example Nickel Azo Yellow from Daniel Smith, a very pushy color. Also when I use a Qor paint with other brands it will push them all aside. Qor is known for that but I don't have enough paints to say if they all move like that. Maybe get their gorgeous high chroma set and try. Also I remember reading there's an additive that can be added to paint to increase flow (ox gall?? Not sure.). Hope that's helpful!

      Well, the value is there. You're getting a good palette (although it is quite bulky and big) that can be used with any tube paint, lots of artist grade colors, although many of them are not single pigment. The colors are vibrant and intense, the color selection is well put together with the exception of the blues. The blues are weird and I would change a couple for more classical choices, like ultramarine blue. Having said all that, I personally never fell in love with them, but many people enjoy them.
