    Hi. First time viewer and I loved the way you addressed what was important for yourself specifically and why. Regarding Mission Gold, their issues were mainly when they first came out on the market about 5-7(?) years ago. They had a very bad marketing scheme in which they paid well known watercolorists to rave about them and at the time, were MUCH more expensive. Since then, they have learnt their lesson. They fixed their lightfastness issues, removed most (if not all) of their dyes, and their Pure Pigment line is the line that packages all their single pigment paint colors. I happen to have this one. I've found that they name the colors different from the pigment, choosing to name via what they look like vs what they are. They do not granulate or wick out on wet paper much due to their formulation of leaving out additives. I also think that it is a style choice. I've found Asian paintings tend to go for more smoother transitions so it could be just a regional preference. I love my pure pigment line and have renamed each tube by their pigment so that I'm not confused as to how they will act. Their transparency is great and I set out a swatch of the Pure Pigment line out by the window for one year in southern CA and there has been minimal shifting. Due to their creaminess, they also can be loaded into the nib of a dip pen. Happy painting!

      My Panda Paints thank you for taking the time to give a review of these paints as well. I find it's always helpful to have more reviews on products. However, I find that I can truly trust her opinions on everything she demonstrates. I just wanted to acknowledge your opinion as well.

      I like the formulation for these paints mostly because I can control where the paint goes so the lack of flow or wicking of paint is my favorite feature.

    If I remember well, when these paints came out a few years ago, there was a big negative thread in one of the major artists forums, mostly complaining about lightfastness and the pigment formulation. After that Mijello reformulated the paints and also released the Pure Pigment Set.
    I'm also a little disappointed that they don't spread much when applied wet on wet but at this price, if I need to paint using the spread effect, I can use pans from St. Petersburg White Nights. They spread like crazy :-)

    Hi Meredith, that was really helpful. I'm an art therapy student and I work only wet in wet (on soaked paper) and with glazing - so hearing that these colours work well in the glazing technique is great as I have read other reviews on Amazon to the contrary. Thank you for your complete review :-)

    Thanks for your review. I also read the reviews about the pigments and lightfastness. I also had read that they reformulated them to address the lightfastness. I didn't have a problem with the pigments. I liked the look of the paints and that was good enough for me. I guess when the pigments become unavailable or too expensive to obtain, these won't look so bad to those that put them down now.
    I don't have any problems getting these to mix on paper. I've got the set of 34 that you reviewed and will also be ordering the pure pigment set as well. There are some colors I want and it's cheaper to buy the set than buy the individuals.

    This was an awesome review. I have a review vid of the 36 color set myself and just recently someone commented with a link to an interesting site where someone tests the lightfastness. I was surprised to see that even a couple colors that have a 5 star lightfast rating on the box still changed. They did a 1 yr lightfast test. The colors that changed were Bright Opera (of course), Prussian Blue, Indigo and Olive Green. Send me a message if you'd like the link. It also includes a bunch of other lightfast tests. If I add it here I believe my comment will go into spam lol. And thanks for sharing! :) P.S. Those mushrooms are soooooo amazing!

    hey! Great video btw
    so i was doing it while watching how u do watercolour, and i'm using just like block paper... and it doesnt blend well
    idk how to really explain it tho ...
    like the water dry off really fast and when the paper im using get water on it and i use the watercolour to paint over it .. the paper just like .. small bits of the paper is coming out ?
    so i wanted to ask u if i'm using the wrong paper for watercolour or is it just something im doing wrong.

    • @TheWittyGrittyPaperCo
      @TheWittyGrittyPaperCo  Před 7 lety +3

      Hi there! It sounds like you are either using paper that isn't actually watercolor paper, or perhaps you are using a hot press block of watercolor paper.
      The reason using actual watercolor paper as opposed to just any paper when painting with watercolors is so important is because watercolor paper has something called sizing in it. Sizing is basically a gelatin layer sandwiched in the paper during production. It keeps watercolor paint on the surface of the paper, preventing it from sinking in before you have time to work with it. Other papers do not have this sizing in them, causing paint to dry too fast, warp the paper, and pill the paper too.
      On the other hand if you are using a hot press watercolor block, you're probably running into a problem because of the finish of the paper. There are actually 3 finishes watercolor paper comes in; rough (which has a lot of texture) cold-press (which has a medium amount of texture) and hot-press (which is smooth because it has very little texture.) Hot press paper can be troubling to beginners because although it is genuine watercolor paper and has sizing in it, it dries faster than the other finishes. And if you try to work it too much while it's drying the paper can pill (or like you said it, little bits can come off.)
      My suggestion would be to first of all, make sure that you are using genuine watercolor paper (the package should have the word watercolor on it) and then perhaps try to find some cold-press paper. Cold-press is actually the most common, so it shouldn't be too hard to find. Sorry for the super long response, but I hope that helps and thank you so much for watching! I hope you have a lovely day! :) Best, Meredith

    I was wondering on which one I should get....Mission Gold Class or Mission Silver Class. Can you give me recommendations? Oh and are they good? To like shade...? And can you give me a link to one of your pallets that you like the most? Thank you for this video! You gained a new subscriber! :D

    • @TheWittyGrittyPaperCo
      @TheWittyGrittyPaperCo  Před 7 lety +4

      Hi there! I honestly can't give an opinion on the Mission silver class watercolors as I have never tried them. However I would recommend this video by one of my favorite other CZcamsrs where she compares them side by side: czcams.com/video/AFHMsYtXPF0/video.html
      The mission gold watercolors are great to shade and overall, I really like them. Most of my favorite pallets are ceramic so, you could really just use a ceramic dinner plate and you'd be on your way. I usually pick up a few at the thrift store every so often. If you wanted something designed for watercolors though, this one is a favorite among my subscribers: www.artistsupplysource.com/product/58381/porcelain-flower-palette-7-well/?origin=google_product_ads&gclid=CjwKEAjw7ZHABRCTr_DV4_ejvgQSJACr-Ycw6KxsH_x5nZ-2_8lDgi7FX_zApfyL11fdMQ9CgI3RhhoCqP_w_wcB

    • @TheWittyGrittyPaperCo
      @TheWittyGrittyPaperCo  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi there! Sorry for the delay in my response! The Winsor & Newton Cotman paints are my #1 recommendation for less expensive student grade paints. They are similar to Winsor and Newton's artist grade paint except they are made with more filler and less pigment, so they can be sold for less. It only means that they will be just a bit less vibrant than the more pricey artist ones. Other than that, they are a great choice, they mix well together, they come in both pans and tubes and they are made in the same color range as artist grade paints. Hope that helps and thank you so much for watching! I hope you have a lovely day! :) Best, Meredith

    Really nice review! I love how you arranged them on your palette and your artworks with them look wonderful! From what I saw in other reviews of the Mission gold watercolours, they really don't flow much. Regardless I found this great lightfastness test of these and only 4 of them turned out to be fugitive. Surprisingly their Prussian blue was not lightfast. Here is the website where I saw it: theenchantedgallery.com/lightfast.html
