    They look so vivid and lovely to handle. They remind me of my White nights but perhaps even more vivid and transparent. That palette doesn't seem to have much mixing space though.

    Hi Steve- these seem to be very nice - thanks for the demo. I am slowly accumulating my M. Graham collection which I love, but this looks like a great alternative to buying more tubes of paints before working with a variety of colors that can be mixed. Please keep us posted on how you like them in your paintings. Thank you again for your time and dedication!

    I pulled the trigger and ordered the 36 set and it comes with a pallet so I'm looking forward to that. I looked around their site and found a set called pure pigments all the paints are a single pigment and they have a mixing chart to create another 26 colours so it turns into a 56 colour set
    how cool is that!
    hope your having a great week Steve!

      +Blissfulthings Yes, I saw the pure pigments set and I think thats the best idea they've had. Its really nice paint. I spent the weekend (my birthday) in Charleston, SC watercolor sketching with the the Mission pan set. (video to come) The intensity of the colors kept surprising me. I was constantly having to tint back the washes.

    I've been eyeballing the 34 color (15ml tubes) set for awhile, which is priced around $95 (ship incl. to US)...Your channel is the only one I've found that shows this pan set, so thank you for this! I followed your link and it is selling at around $115 for this 24 color (2 ml pans) set with incl. box. I just want to suggest to all those considering this set of watercolors that you can purchase a large, generic travel box with half or full pans for $20-30 on Amazon, so the 34 set of 15ml tubes is very much the way to go. Thanks for the video and the info, always a joy to watch your stuff!

    Thanks for making this great review! I was actually considering getting their 36 tube watercolor set having positive reviews on it. I was set on getting a Hoblein's tube set because I've seen so many illustrators use this as well as Dr. Martin's concentrated colors. Honestly I'm going to own all these brands but I guess it's worth trying Mission Gold first since I'll get three times as many paints to work with.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety +1

      +Marlisa Monther Mission Gold does seem to be a good value. One word about Dr. Martin's Radiant Concentrated colors. They are dye based and not light fast. Popular for illustrators who scan and reproduce their work but not good for fine art that might go on display. Dr. Martin's Hydrus is a better choice for fine art since it is pigment based.

    I have the tube set of 36 in the double U palette (the $67 one on Amazon) I had to get a second set because I love the palette itself and I was running low on quite a few colors. I really like these paints!!!! I'm a Daniel smith junkie and really do like these paints a lot! The weirdest thing I found about the set that I have is the "Bright Rose" (opera pink color) glows under black light!! My pest control guy and I were scorpion hunting my property and I paint outside and when I ran the black light over my painting set up that Bright Rose just light up like a candy kid at a rave! It is fugitive but the glowing aspect was rather intriguing thinking what the heck is making it glow!!! Great review! Glad you like them as well.

      +Erin S. How do the tube versions dry in the palette? Do the they re-wet super fast like the pans?

    • @erins.5420
      @erins.5420 Před 8 lety

      +The Mind of Watercolor the tube paints dry perfectly! There is one red that dried cracked but only one out of the set did that and I dropped my pallet and not one color popped out or came out of the well. They can rewet with a damp brush and can compare them with Daniel smith on rewetting. Amazing paint really, I am doing my own lightfast test because I don't trust any company's lightfast rating. That is something k have to test for myself. One thing I don't like is mixing the ultramarine and burnt sienna (not sure if the paints are named that but the hues are what I would call them); don't mix to a nice grey, the mix to a muddy green. But other than that so far so great!

    A while back you did a video on plein air and making your own tripod system. Well, I managed to get 26 half pans into a small Altoids tin. 14 on the bottom stuck down with double stick tape. Then I cut an old credit card to size and stuck 12 more on, leaving room for my fingers to remove it and fit it into the open Altoid cover. Voila! 26 colors in my shirt pocket!

    @IllustrationsByPete Před 8 lety

    Love your videos. So great to see a proper review of these paints. I know there is a lot of controversy on some sites about them but it's nice to hear a professional opinion. Some of the concerns raised are that they use mixes for earth tones instead of pure pigments and for some colors they use more staining dyes like Benzimidazolone colors mixed with fugitive pigment colors, but I think all companies do that with at least some colors. I'm new to this whole thing so I don't know if that makes a big difference or not but if the watercolor master gives it a thumbs up then I have to think its good quality. How do they compare to your M Grahams?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety

      +IllustrationsByPete Thanks Pete! They compare well, but I will always prefer my M. Graham to just about any paint. Some of that is just due to a sterling reputation. Art Graham (the founder) has a reputation for taking the most meticulous care in selecting and milling the finest quality pigments. I was also interested in these because these are new and from an unlikely source. To some extent I put pans in a slightly different category. I think you can make a few compromises. I like pans for journaling and plein air (though tube color is fine for that also). In a backpack this would make for a nice portable set. If I were doing a full finished painting plein air I would probably bring a palette of my M. Graham. That said, I judge color in a pan by what I can see and by rated lightfastness. I personally don't care how they arrive at the color as long as its archival and permanent and I like the way it looks and flows. Consider that Schmincke pans (alway touted as one of the best and they are quite good) will cost you nearly twice as much for a set of 24, come in a smaller generic tin and a plain white box and NO COLOR CHART info is included in the package. Plus I saw higher lightfast ratings for most of these colors than for the Schmincke colors.

    Very nice indeed, very similar to my set of watercolors I use from "Kuretake" Gansi Tambi out of Japan. You should try these also, they are exceptional colors and when used wet on wet the colors stay vivid even after drying. Find them on Amazon (but shipped from Japan so don't expect them overnight) very reasonably priced at $38.56 for 36 extra large half pans. Enjoy!

    The one thing i hate about this is the pans. I think the paints look great but the pans are just annoying in my opinion. The pans only work for the mijello sets, but with traditional half/full pans they can be arranged and put into other palettes easily, as pans are pretty universal across brands. Thats my honest to god stupid nit pick about these, but i think its just a tad less convenient then other brands. (But i have to admit the palette these pans come in are very pretty)

    • @mindofwatercolor

    Hi Steve, I just got off the phone with a man from Mission Gold via the US distributor, Martin Weber. The samples I ordered on 5/1/16 never arrived. Michael Gorack, in C.S., told me about a new "Pure," pigment set that they are releasing. It contains 24 pure pigment 15 ml. tubes and 2, 7ml. tubes of black and white. I asked that they send a sample to you and Marty Owings for review.
    The pure pigment price is like buying gold but I believe it will be considerably discounted on some web sites upon release. Retail price is well over $300. I hope they do send you some for review. I can't wait to hear what you think of them.
    Also, He told me that the 24 pan set you are reviewing here, is an extraction pan set, and that they fill several times and use 2+ tubes of paint? Aren't these pans about 7ml? I thought that might be of interest to you as well. thanks for the attention to detail in all your demos. I appreciate your service to us all.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety

      +Julie Montoya Yes they are removable but they are an odd size so a standard half pan will not fit in there unless maybe it was glued. Replacement pans are available via open stock which is nice!

  • @saltlakerenee
    @saltlakerenee Před 8 lety +5

    I bought the 36 color tube set that comes with the palette. I read that the tube paints are made WITHOUT any type of thickening agent. Is this also true of the pan sets? By the way Amazon is selling them for only $67 which includes the palette!! The regular list price is $279.99

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety +2

      +saltlakerenee Yes, I believe that is true of the pans as well. In reality, that is true of most high quality artist's grade paints. Thickeners are usually used as a filler when less pigment is used, like in student grade paints.

    • @fyoty42
      @fyoty42 Před 8 lety +1

      +saltlakerenee , Thanks for the tip on the low Amazon price. That makes them less expensive than the Grumbacher Academy student grade paints I had purchased when starting to paint a few months ago. At this price, I just grabbed a set of these Mission Golds with the palette.

I also noticed the yellow ochre and green gold were nearly identical with only a very slight shift towards green in the green gold.

    I love product reviews. What originally brought be to your channel was a review on Qor watercolors. I was wondering if you could do a review of LUKAS Aquarell 1862 Artists' Watercolor Sets, they are available at Jerry's Artarama. I am curious about what you think of the sets.

      +Brandon Moreno I would love to say yes but probably won't. I'm not primarily a review channel and like to keep product reviews to things that are new-ish and products I'm likely to buy and use. Thats not to say that Lukas is not a worthy brand. My friend Marty over at the Owings Art channel has done a review of the pan set you might find useful. Give it a look. I trust his judgment. czcams.com/video/oi_hP6e4ryg/video.html

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety

      +Lee Jennings Rounds are usually best to start with. A great all purpose brush and many artists use nothing else. Sizes depends on how big you want to paint. Add an oval wash or flat next. If I could only have 4 brushes it would be a 3/4" oval wash, #12 or #10 round, #8 or #6 round, and a rigger/liner (if you paint landscape)

    Hello! Can you please comment on the lightfastness of these colors? I mean, not from the information on the box or from the manufacturer, but from your experience. I read a blog post from someone who made a lightfastness test of these in 2013 and she determined that the line had serious problems with that aspect of the paints. I am wondering if the company made any reformulations to correct that. So, can you please comment on this? Thanks!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety

      +Jeannie Pagan I honestly don't know. I haven't light tested them myself. Its possible. My primary paint brand for most of my work is M. Graham. I bought these pans for location journaling so lightfastness is not really an issue in a journal. They do use legit pigment formulations from what I can tell.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety

      +Susaleena They compare very favorably. I will always prefer my M. Graham first just because of their formulation and stellar reputation in milling and choosing pigments, but I was interested in Mission Gold because because of these pans. A good value for the money. I'm pretty impressed with them even when compared to other artist's grade pans like Schmincke and Sennelier.

    What the main upside of having single-pigment paints? Less drift in hue as it ages in light, or fewer surprises when mixing, or something else?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety +1

      +Deipatrous Yes, predictability in use and multi-color mixing mainly. Single pigments are also considered more pure. Less chance of mud. Multi-pigment colors are considered more acceptable in convenience colors where there is less chance of mixing it with lots of other colors.

    Hey there, awesome chanel, just saw your workshop coming up on Strathmore...What scanner works best for scanning watercolors, do you know? I knwo there is CCD and CIS technologies...but I'm having a hard time scanning in an Epson/ CIS, as parts that dont completely are in touch the glass get blurred, and the reds and pinks are not being captured very well, they look too much alike..

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety +1

      +Monica B I'm not really a tech reviewer of current products so I don't know whats out there right now, but over the years, I've liked Epson or Canon scanners. For art scanning, I am currently using a very high-resolution Canon, CCD, stand alone scanner (all-in-ones are not recommended for art, nor are CIS scanners). The glass problem is a problem with any scanner you choose. The art must contact the glass to get a sharp scan. Art that won't lay flat usually has to be photographed in high resolution with proper professional lighting to get reproduction quality. And then there is the image post processing. Whole different subject, but you'll need a pro-quality program like Photoshop to get good final results. Suffice it to say that the road to high quality scanning is littered with pitfalls.

    • @monicab7809
      @monicab7809 Před 8 lety

      +The Mind of Watercolor . I worked in ad agencies looong time ago when the only way was to get the art to a drum scanner for reproduction...Is your Canon the 900F model? I saw some Epson scanners for art but they cost a couple of thousand dollars...

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 8 lety

      +Monica B CanoScan 9000F MarkII. Yeah, Epson makes some larger ones I wish I could afford. 8.5 x 14 is pretty limiting. Oh yes, being a commercial designer for some 30+ years, I remember the drum scanner quite well. I remember an ad rush job where I hand carried the art to the scanner guys and waited (watched) while they scanned it. That scanner would not even fit in my art studio. Huge!

      Bread и Butter if my guess is right, pan watercolors are usually more expensive is because of the palette. The 36 is such a deal on Amazon because they probably ship directly from Korea. And the real retail price is actually like $200+ (which specifically made for a foreign country so their price is higher than "shipping products", on the other hand they are the same thing though)
