    This review helped me decide my first purchase of artist grade watercolors after years of practice with student grade!
    Not only do you provide intuitive swatches, you actually show examples of the paints at work in illustrations (for all your reviews!). This has been very helpful as I found a lot of watercolor reviews don’t show the watercolors’ performance outside swatches.
    Thank you very much, Teoh! I’m now very much enjoying these paints because of your help!

    Good review of the Mission Gold Paints. You indicated that you had been using these for a couple of months, do you prefer these paints over other brands that you have reviewed in the past?
    Loved the sketch book as well, thank you for sharing your sketches/paintings.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 8 lety +8

      +corikay They are very high quality paints definitely but they are not really significantly better than other brands with high quality paints. The thing is, I started out using Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith, so I have a preference for those brands. Having said that, I enjoy using all these three brands.
      If you're thinking of which brand to buy, go for the brand that you can find easily at your art shop. Or if you buy online, the store that has reasonable shipping fees. Mission Gold is slightly more expensive than other brands.
      If you want something different, unusual, try Kremer Pigments. www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-kremer-pigments-14-full-pan-watercolour-box-set

    Hi Teoh, thank you for the review. I enjoyed this video as well as your other videos I've watched :)
    I'm actually contemplating whether to get White Nights, Mission Gold or Kuretake Gansai as my first watercolor set. The latter is the cheapest, Mission Gold & White Nights are actually about the same price since I'm thinking of getting a set of Mission Gold on my coming trip to Korea where it's wayyyy cheaper there. Which set would you recommend though? I think I like more transparent watercolor as I really love the look of loose & dreamy watercolor washes if you know what I mean.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 7 lety +1

      Mission Gold, White Nights and Kuretake Gansai in that order. With Mission Gold, you need to get yourself an empty palette box though. White Nights come with box.

      I would say definitely go with mission gold. You can get 24 7ml tubes pretty affordably on amazon. You can asp get a 36 7ml set with a palette too. I have the palette set (have almost used all those tubes) and two 34 sets, one of which has all but the white and black of the same colors from the palette set, but in 15 ml tubes, and the other is the 34 pure pigment set. They don’t always suit my style for every painting but I definitely recommend them!

    Teoh, do you have any info on the lightfastness of these paints?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 7 lety +2

      I saw that you pasted the link from the Wetcanvas site. I don't have any info on the lightfastness. I generally choose colours that are most likely to be lightfast and durable. E.g. I won't choose opera or pink from any brand because this colour is usually fugitive. Sometimes, I would look at the pigment code and compare the same pigment to other brand to see their lightfast rating.

  • @terencemolloy1827
    @terencemolloy1827 Před 8 lety

    I bought a few of these to try. Some of the pigments are the same as other brands so are very similar. I was surprised to see that ultramarine has two pigments instead of one. I don't like the violet tinge that comes with it. I only have 5 tubes so a bit restricted on what I can do.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 8 lety

      +Terence Molloy A restricted palette is good for practise. It's easier to achieve colour harmony

    • @terencemolloy1827
      @terencemolloy1827 Před 8 lety

      I really needed another red to broaden my scope. The ultramarine also contains a violet pigment which reacts strangely with the other colours when mixed. I like your choice Of W&N ultramarine to add a different dimension but it would have been nice to do a piece with just the Mijello paints.

    Hello Teoh, thanks for the review!
    I was actually considering either buying Mission Gold or Holbeins paints and have been getting mixed reviews on both ends. As much as I would love to purchase Daniel Smith watercolors, the price would kill my wallet in my country. So, I'm considering buying either the Mission Gold 36 with the palette set or Holbein's 24 set but I don't know which one is better quality wise. I'm not too worried about the quantity with tube sizes and the extra palette, just the paint quality because for the right paints, I'll buy a palette tin. Which one would you recommend?

      the threat you mention on Wetcanvas is from 2012. Mijello reformulated and re-released the Mission Gold in 2013. The paint you buy today is totally different from the pre-2013 ones... Hello again. I was considering buying the 36 color Mission Gold palette which is on sale on Amazon. Since I don't NEED it I went to the manufacturer website to see what colors were included. I was thinking probably it's better to buy new pigments than keep purchasing palettes and getting the same colors over and over again. So one thing that struck me about these Mission Gold paints was the incredible amount of mixed pigment colors, many of which made from 3 pigments. How do you feel about that?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  Před 8 lety

      +Meda Halmaciu Try to get single pigment paints as much as possible. When there is too many pigments, they tend to dull down easier when mixing. Note that Mission Gold may use different names for same pigment compared to other brands.
