    Goodness...7 years on, and watching this video after receiving my MG paints, I can't tell you how helpful this is. Thanks so much, Steve, you've given a completely brand spanking new beginner such a great understanding of how to use the MG pure pigments to approach the mystery and reluctance in starting to mix pigments. I know the brochure provides the basic info, but there is just nothing like seeing it done by a great teacher and gifted watercolorist. Love your videos and your art. 🙏 ❤🙏

      K Werner Design I know right! Kind of interesting, I actually linked a video of yours (masculine card with hero arts set using the mijello paints) on one of steves other videos talking about mijello because he said he couldn't find much information or video on CZcams about these paints and at that time that video of yours was practically one of the only ones that showed anything slightly telling of its properties.
      I remember earlier this year I think it was in January or so suggesting mijello on someone's periscope because there were some that were uncomfortable with the investment of Daniel smith. I think Sandy allnocks or Dawn WPlus9 I can't recall, and I was so thrilled to see a week or so later you had gotten them and omg the paint sets flew off the shelf and sold out! And now they are $10 less than when I got them!!!

    The new version of this set has a MUCH better color curation that is so much better balanced across the spectrum: I can’t wait to try to cobalt turquoise!! It also gives you a clear percentage ratio for the color mixing combinations they give to create their full line yourself from the tubes

    After watching your video again, I like the way the palette spread out the paint after you used the 1500 grit sandpaper to prep the surface. I think I'd get confused trying to follow a different configuration of the mixes in a different palette, so I going with the one you have in the demo. Will be great for learning how to mix my colors more predictably.

    I got this set last summer and love it. I did not get the palette but I did mix sap green from their recipe and I regretted it so I don't think making the mixed paints would be right for me but it is a neat concept. I recommend these as well, great quality and price! I have a DrPH makten palette I cut the edges off so it would fit in my big Jones palette (where my M Grahams live) and I can sore these colors there and use the lid of my m graham palette for mixing. Great review!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 7 lety +15

      Cool, thanks for the input Lindsay! Yeah, really the only benefit to the mixing system is to help someone know which colors to use to mix what. You simply can't combine the fresh tube paint paste accurately. You have to mix visually on the palette with a wash. But I found most of their combinations to mix pretty accurately with a little trial and error.

    Receiving the paints and palette this weekend. So excited to start setting up the palette. I have the 36 non-pure pigment set and I LOVE it (with 36 Palette - prefer the walls over the pans) . As someone fairly new to painting, I love that these are pure pigments, for cleaner mixes, and that it will help me better understand color mixing. I only just started learning the "magic" of neutralizing colors with their complements. I know this is old news to most, but as a beginner, I'm thrilled at how many more colors I have, just by starting to learn about color mixing. I paint mostly florals, so the heavy reds are another bonus. With this set, I'm going to try putting the paints on the shallow end to see how I like having the option of diluted paint pooling at the bottom. Thank you for your thoughtful reviews. I've learned so much from you already!

  • @christierella
    @christierella Před 5 lety +3

    I'm so excited I ordered these pure pigments, I can't wait to get them. I didn't order the palette, I don't have a lot of space. So, to keep cat hair, and dust out I opted for the porcelain Stephen Quiller palette. I'm getting to the point with W/C that I am concerned about light fastness, and making my own mixes. Great video!

    Thank you so much for reviewing these pure pigment sets from Mission Gold - what I found most helpful was your explanation of the convenience colours and your suggestions on how to set the strips of colour into the wells instead of mixing them all together into the recommended convenience colour, review from other people talked about them but never actually explained the system as thoroughly as you have. After this review I am seriously considering the pure pigment set. I too have Mission Gold pan set and love it.

    Thanks for sharing your review. I cheated and bought the full set of 105 colours and the convenience colours are definitely a convenience since I'm new to painting and not comfortable with mixing. I will say that it does help to create a swatch chart, and time permitting, a mix chart. Thanks for including a review of the palette. I've just been using a ceramic plate but that definitely looks great for at least keeping the paints in so I can still use the plate for mixing, etc. Also, they do get harder with time; however there are still a few that are still somewhat malleable. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

      Yes, I tried that first but didn't work. This surface is pretty tough.

      I almost cried when I got my palette and saw everything bead up. I was using a glass plate before I bought a real palette from Mijello... I didn't do anything special to mine, but kept mixing and it began to behave more like I expected. I am so happy you mentioned that in the video because it seems to be a popular choice and I thought I might have gotten a lemon :-) I think wiping mine down with a dry paper towel a few times between projects may have scratched the surface a bit. Still, the sandpaper tip is priceless!

      Yes - my palette actually came with a magic eraser. I've also used comet on a plastic palette and that has worked too.

    I just purchased mijello, pure pigment 34s. They'll arrive in a month. So I'm learning everything I can about it base from the reviews. It's my most expensive art material purchase, and I 'm not a professional. So I'm kinda nervous and excited to use it.

    I am a beginner in watercolor and was very excited by the options explained in your review. I purchased the watercolor set and the pallet through Amazon, but the chart for color layout was not included. Do you have any suggestions on how to find the missing chart? I tried to get a screen shot from your video, but it is just a little too blurry for my poor old eyes to make out. Meanwhile, I greatly enjoy your videos and your artwork is amazing. I am very grateful for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and experience. Thank you.

    Oh my goodness! This is the best explanation of pigment numbers! My mind just went…😮 duh! 😂 seriously, I’ve always been so confused by the numbers, nor did I care. I just started to pay attention. 😊

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 7 lety

      Yeah I've done that too. Don't want to do that though if paint is already in the palette. The steel wool bits get everywhere. 1500 or 2000 grit sand paper is neater.

    Love the review, I really wanted to buy this set but I had bought another set also sold by that same amazon seller and had awful customer service, and I won't buy from them again. So it looks like I can't have it unless I want to pay a ton more.

    Steve, thanks so much for this review. I received in the Mijello Mission Gold 36 set with pallet. I have only been working with watercolor for almost a year and have been using student grade pan set (St. Petersburg). It has done well for learning but the Mission Gold is on a whole other level. So creamy and rewets so beautifully. It loves Arches and Canson paper. The colors are so different from what I have used before. Thanks again.

    This video was great, I probably would have mixed the paints in the little pans... I have the 36 tube set, and I admit that I really wanted to love these, but I don't. I think for those who do loose and fluid watercolors this brand is not the way to go. The colors don't move, and they lift so easily when I add more layers on top. Obviously many people enjoy them, the colors are bright and lovely, so maybe it's just me :) Thanks so much for your wonderful videos!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před 7 lety +4

      Not all paints are for all people thats for sure. They do move a bit sluggishly. Thats actually a plus for some artists. Depends on style. I'm puzzled though by the lifting. Thats usually a function of paper not paint. I suppose the formulation could change that. I didn't a notice a lifting difference on Arches but you've made me want to recheck that.

    • @mindofwatercolor

      I didn't notice a significant differences with other paints. Specific color can also make a difference with flow.

    Got my new set of 17, was very excited. I have one big issue with the tube paints. They're quite liquiddy and after pouring into pans they don't seem to dry up. Unlike any other brands I poured into pans the same day.
    Is it just me?

    I love your channel. The paints I usually use are Daniel Smith and Winsor Newton along with a Schmincke purple. I have been wanting to get more information about these Mission paints and really enjoyed your demo. The fact that these paints have honey in them do you think that they would mix okay with DS and WN? Also have you tried rubbing toothpaste into the surface of a new plastic palette? It is less scratchy. You can use it to remove the staining too. Merry Christmas and a Guid New Year from bonnie Scotland xx

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před rokem +1

      Yep they mix fine. Toothpaste works but it’s slow and messy. Since this video I tend to just let palettes break in on they’re own. Also slow but it eventually happens.

    Hi Mind of Watercolour...have you tried glue stick to prep palettes? No grazing, no staining!
