  • Hi all! Today we’re taking a look at the Mission Gold Pure Pigment Set, thanks to viewer Katherine, who took the time to set up the dot chart for me so that I could get a video out to you all. In this first impressions video, we’re going to take a look at the individual colors in this set and compare them to other brands. We will not be covering the various mixes provided in the brochure in this particular video, but if that’s something you want to see, let me know in the comments below!

    $94.50!?!? I came across this set in an art shop in Seoul and it was like... $60ish after converting from KRW to USD. I was considering picking it up, but now it looks even more tempting with that discount! haha Thanks for reviewing this. It's given me some things to think about.

    They don't care about multiple pigments in the paint because Asian watercolor is traditionally not mixed by the artist, FYI

      @user-xo4jd4ot8s Před 4 lety +3

      yeah if a specific hue is required, artists premix them and use them alone without mixing in pallete. The mixing of colors are close to transition or gradation thant mixed on paper.

    Interesting that they market their Pthalo Green YS under Holbein's name for it ("Bamboo Green"). Wonder if the paints have the same handling properties as Holbein as well (non-active, easy re-wetting, etc.)?

    Hi, Denise. First of all, I really enjoy watching your videos! Yours is my go to channel for watercolor paint info.
    I have a Mission Gold Pure Pigment set (24 + w&b) purchased last year on eBay. It is labeled Pure Pigment Set MWC-1524P. I really like this particular set because it has a very balanced color assortment, unlike the set you reviewed in this video. It contains Dioxazine Violet (PV23). Plus, it contains a very pretty Cobalt Turquoise (PB28) which when mixed with “Cerulean” Blue (PB15:3), turns into this gorgeous Peacock Blue.
    Speaking of “Cerulean” Blue, I labeled my color swatch with the word Cerulean in double quotes following your lead. :)
    Interestingly, I noticed that Schmincke also calls PB15:3 “Cerulean” Blue - it’s called Helio Cerulean; PB36 is called Cobalt Cerulean; and PB15:1 is called Phthalo Blue. (You turned me into a watercolor pigment geek. LOL!) Anyways, looks like Mijello was not too far off when they named their PB15:3 “Cerulean.”
    Thanks for creating videos worth watching!

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  Před 6 lety +2

      Thanks so much for all your kind words. Those sound like great additions to the set! Cerulean hues are made with PB15:3 and a white pigment but should definitely be labeled as hues :) This POW of color screams phthalo blue :)

    I'm drolling over here. I've found the set on ebay for US87 and I'm soooo tempted. I certainly don't need more paints, but this set has many pigments that I've never seen in person... I love vibrant colours! And I've read somewhere (I think it was Jane Blundell's blog) that they have a very small drying shift, which I love. Impeccable review, as always, Denise! Thank you!

    I went back and forth several times when I decided that Mission Gold was the paint I was going to go with when getting back into watercolor painting. I just loved the consistency of the paints I sampled and the lack of fillers and true to life colors. I finally bought the 36 color set with the Mijello palette. I am a little parsimonious, that's a $2 word for cheap. I still do not like spending on paint I may or may not use, but I have since bought more colors in the 15ml sizes. I have since (based on your recommendations and reviews) Bought some DaVinci watercolor paints and I have found them delightful! I almost wish I had discovered your channel before I purchased anything, but I would never have started painting, and at some point you have to get started or you never will get any paint on paper! So thanks for all you do and I am looking forward to more from you in the future!

    Denise I love watching your videos from the past. So here I am. Awe Yes, Steve Mitchell's favorite mixing cool yellow is Azo Green, being PY129 a green gold. Steve has his 10 favorites in M Graham that the company produced for him with his name and logo in custom set. It's a beautiful set. Have you seen it? So tempting but I already have those tubes. It's still available. I wonder why PY129 isn't in the Mission Gold set. It's clearly a different hue from PY150 in most brands.

    That's the nicest dot colour chart I've seen! (thanks, Katherine) Here's my thoughts on the cerulean controversy(!) - I did a bit of research a while back, out of curiosity. Apparently, the word Cerulean is derived from the Latin word(Caeruleus) that means...(sky)blue. And as you can imagine, there can be many different variations. As far as I know, the term 'cerulean blue' wasn't in use until the mid 19th century, so it's a bit difficult to dispute which cerulean is right and wrong - even counting the ones made from PB35, because the pigment itself is 'named' as cerulean, not made to be cerulean. I've seen a few brands selling a cerulean that is not of PB35, some in Europe(though mostly specified as 'hue'). Holbein does a Manganese blue that is of PB15 rather than PB33 - and in my opinion, cerulean and manganese are very much interchangable in watercolours. I think the inclusion of the phthalo blue was good nonetheless...and a perylene maroon! I must add that I also love the unique burnt sienna from them, too, haha! I love its vibrancy on its own and great shades of deep, muted sea/forest green it makes with blues. Absolutely gorgeous.
    Thanks for doing the review - it's nice to have a closer look in some tools that are unfortunately too pricey for me. (this set is sold for around 150 euro here, crazy!)

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  Před 7 lety +3

      Amé Binnarä Thank you for all the information :) I like the burnt sienna well enough as a color, I just have a huge issue with them calling it burnt sienna. Burnt sienna is widely regarded as a color that mixes with Ultramarine to create a grey which this does not do. I'll give it a try to make some greens though, maybe with phthalo or Prussian :) I'm glad the review overall was helpful!

    • @yuame
      @yuame Před 7 lety +2

      Your reviews are always helpful - especially the colour swatch comparisons! I got to learn how to make them from you. :) And you're right, I am curious about the reason behind its name, too. Personally, I have an issue with PR101 burnt siennas...they're okay, but...they aren't really close to PBr7 hue wise, and not too special to stand out in the sea of burnt siennas. Well, technically speaking, neither(Mijello's mixture and PR101) should be named a burnt sienna, because they've no earth in them :p

      It's a mission 24 color set. I didn't put a date on them but it's been over a year or so. Now my swatches are not as professional as yours but it did them on watercolor paper. It was mainly the browns and a red. Probably what I need to do is reswatch them along the lines of what you do. My sample was just in the drawer with the paint not sealed in a plastic and binder either but out of the sun. The more I type I think I'm answering this query for myself. When I feel better I'll redo them and we'll see what happens. Thanks for listening.

I've been thinking about getting myself some quality artist paints since watercolor is my medium of choice and I was looking at the mission gold sets since they are affordable and the colors are so vibrant! I wonder how you'd feel about the color selection in the 34 color pure pigment set vs this one. There's actually less overlap between those two sets that I would've thought, in fact it seems like the 34 color set (from Korea) has colors that are unlisted in their English language site. I love Mission Gold vibrancy, same as you I don't like that some color from that set is mix *cough burnt sienna*. As far as violet I remember they have a PV29 and there is another blue PB60 from their full selection. - about 30$ a tube , I guess I'm lucky they are cheaper here - I got PR176 - Rose Madder e 15ml for 14$ equivalent in my currency.

I felt out of practice...lol 😉 Your video was a great reminder that you really should always list the pigment number with your swatches. • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  Před 7 lety +1

      Valarie Connell /DrawingWithFire as a friend of mine would say, must be Mercury in retrograde, or something like that. It shall pass soon haha. I do definitely recommend the pigment numbers. I know a lot of people don't like to bother with it and that's fine, but at very least it can save you money so that you don't double up on paints you already have. But I also enjoy being able to recognize many colors more easily just by looking at them these days :)

    • @DrawingWithFire
      @DrawingWithFire Před 7 lety +1

      In Liquid Color lol! Yes, mercury retrograde. 🤣 I made a second swatch chart...I also have my big binder too. I took a 9x12 yellow Strathmore wc pad that still had 5-6 sheets still bound and charted each page based on family colors. I then listed my 5 main brands along the short side (there are a couple of empty rows to add later with other brands) and did 14/15 columns across with the color names of what i have. So all of my blues are on one page and I can just pick a color I like and easier to compare to the other ones...kind similar to your big swatches without the details. Its just a quick chart to pick colors from and to see how many of the same name, so no buying doubles within a specific brand. I do think I'm going back to these swatches and put asterisks on the multiple pigment colors to remind myself to check the pigments & mixing with other colors before adding to a piece. 😃Hubby says I'm way to organized...lmbo!😂 He said he just picks an acrylic color by closing his eyes & grabbing a bottle...he can be so silly. We have 2 separate art studios to spread out in & because we work in 2 different ways. We shared for years 1 studio & it was great, but I love having my own space to do whatever in & so does he. 😆

    Wow, the Permanent Rose Color you rant about retails in Germany for about 11€ that's cheaper than most Daniel Smith colors in the 5ml tubes here :) the cheaper colors are about 5€ and for 15 ml super affordable.

      Ah if only! I did hear that Jacksons started carrying them, which we can order from the US too. I'm on a paint buying ban but keeping that in mind for next year ;)

    30$?! Even 18$ on DickBlick seems way out of scale. In my country, the Philippines, the E series only retails for 625PHP - equivalent to 11.55USD! Looks like it's more expensive in your side of the globe...
