After the success of 2009’s Avatar, Hollywood was determined to make Sam Worthington the next big leading man. Along with Terminator: Salvation, he was put at the forefront of several huge productions- one of which was a remake of the 1981 film Clash of the Titans.
Clash of the Titans definitely raises some questions though. Like why is this called Clash of the Titans when there are zero titans in it? What’s the Kraken doing here in a Greek Mythology story? What was the point of those two guys who show up for a bit and then randomly leave? Why was Perseus so selective about which god gifts to accept? Why didn’t Zeus bring back his family in the end?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to Clash of the Titans.

To be fair, Zeus having other people stop the plans he set in motion is probably the most on-brand thing in this entire movie.
Yeah, in addition to knocking up human ladies.
I‘ll add to that list: only believing in part of oracles or thinking one could avert their predictions is very spot on, too. Feels like that’s what the whole Greek mythology build up upon

I love how Hades, the absolute nicest and most chill of all Greek gods is the one that sets loose the Kraken, a sea monster from Norse mythology. Poseidon must've been taking a nap or something, because I clearly remember Poseidon doing that in the original movie. :P
You're right about Poseidon rrkeasing it in the original. It was some giant squid-looking thing. I think.
Did you get the Norse thing from wikipedia? Have to admit I went looking for that after watching this PM. Funny thing, way down at the bottom of the page under "See also" is Cetos - an ancient sea monster slain by Perseus in Greek myth. So this is a case of writers, of the original film, choosing a better known name for a sea monster, rather than writers of this film getting their mythological deeds wrong.
Poseidon did it in the book, too, and by book I mean Apollodorus's Bibliotheca, New York Times bestseller of 153 CE or thereabouts. These movie adaptations always change things.
Poseidon is the behind of scenes villain of the original Perseus story (while the monsters and king polydectes are the properly villains), in Ovid version he screwed up Medusa (altrough in all other versions he did nothing), but he was the one that set up the monster Cetus to Aethiopia, and Perseus killed the monster to save Andromedra.
it wasnt poseidon, it was davy jones
"what about his family?" "Nah" absolutely killed me lol.
I never even thought of that lol
to be fair, it would bee kinda creepy if they where brought back instead... and he started making out with them.
Yeah that was a good line. But ironically wrong. Io was family - like his great great great granny. If you look at the wikipedia page for this film, it notes that this character Io and Perseus lived centuries apart, and she was an ancestor. Eeew.

So glad you mentioned Medusa's messed up situation. In EVERY version, she ONLY kills people who break into HER home that they have to go out of their way to find. Whether she was turned into a monster by Athena or born one, she literally just chills at home and people bother her for shits and giggles lmao
And for that first backstory option, she's also a rape victim cursed for being raped who is just trying to stay the fuck away from humanity.
And they're actually coming to decapitate her so she's really just defending herself
she sounds like she just seems like a creature that just wants to spend her days living alone not bothering anyone with her terrifying power unless of course they seek her out and try to kill her, seems like its more of a case like where when animals who are just minding their own biusness get randomly hunted because they are either hunted for sport or humans are hunting them because they are afraid of them despite the fact deaths to that animal is exeptionally rare like in the case of sharks, we murder millions of sharks a year and yet they only kill like 5 or 10 of us a year
Yeah, that’s always a big problem I have with stories featuring Medusa.
At best, she’s defending herself; at worst, she’s a victim of horrible circumstance, and some stories *insist* on making her a horrible victim.
What’s even sadder is that I only know of two stories where Medusa is portrayed more favorably-Disney’s Hercules: The Animated Series (where she does get a happy ending, but doesn’t become a main character), and (I kid you not) an ASMR RP series by Macalda Reye called “Meeting A Modern Medusa.”
Which… I mean, I like ASMR RPs, and I recommend checking that one out because it gives her story some justice, but that’s still much too low for a character like her…
Honestly, I’d pay money for a reimagining of the original story where she becomes a hero or at least helps Perseus and gets to live in peace afterward.
@@psionicsknight6651 there has been a series where modern people get stranded ina fantasy land were gods also run around and mostly are just people, as well as most monsters. they did well in giving them personalities and agendas, though too many things were silly or ended up unexplained.

Poetry retroactively tying your culture into the culture you're trying to appropriate is TIGHT.
I am going to have you get all the way off my Greek mythology back right now.
Oooooh really ?

There is a bit more to it than that. The elements were always there and Ovid didn’t strictly retcon or make things up. He just gave it a different perspective, which, if the pattern holds, he wasn’t actually the first to do so. A lot of writings and plays are lost to us, but the pattern of looking at the same story through a different lens is certainly well established in the Greek mythos, from Prometheus to Medea, we actually see this at play. Ovid is certainly the most visible and the best at it. His skill at writing is absurdly and annoyingly good. So, he’s the first that we have that fully reimagines the story, but there’s nothing to indicate he was truly the first. We’re also talking about a myth that arose during the Greek Dark Age after the Bronze Age collapse and was codified in the 700s or 600s BC while Ovid writes around the turn of the millennium. Even in 300 years in Greece myths and stories change radically, let alone up to 700 years of oral, poetic, and prose tradition
"Well, it certainly sounds like a movie!" You got that right.
Ah yes, Hades using his traditional weapon, the sea monster. Seems like kinda a lot of responsibility for him to handle alongside the underworld - maybe he and Zeus should advertise for another King to split their powers with, a third amigo if you will. Pity no one like that exists.

Originally Medusa was just one of a bunch of similar monsters, years later Ovid wrote his own version where she became a tragic figure cursed by the gods and since this is the most popular version, people assume it’s the definitive and not ancient fan fiction
Even something recent like Athurian mythology is without a single canon source.
To be fair, pretty much all of mythology is just built by a succession of ancient fan fictions added on top of each others.
@@andeolevain We're doing it even now with our own western mythology

Thank you for bringing up the tragedy of Medusa
I think too many people think she’s just the “evil snake hair lady”
I literally just learned about all that, just by wondering what messed up story he's talking about. I'm shook
Well, only in Ovid's telling of the myth does she have a tragic story. Most Greco-Roman depictions of Medusa paint her as born a monster, like the otehr gorgons. Ovid's telling isn't 'wrong' in any sense but it is strongly divergent with all the other sources which talk about Medusa and Perseus.
Except that interpretation was not the original myth. In the original she really was the evil snake hair lady. The version you’re thinking of came from a guy with a anti authority streak, whose versions of the stories portrayed the gods as more callous.
Medusa is in an odd situation. Most of the original versions of the myth portray her as one of the three Gorgon sisters. The poet Ovid might be the first story of how she was raped in a temple.
Playing Devil's Advocate for a sec; what does it matter to this story? She's a fictional character, so it's not like a real human is being slandered. What does it matter if a fictional character is being retold in a new way?

Just to reassure everyone - Medusa was born a gorgon (and NOT a victim of SA) in all versions except for the one by the Roman poet Ovid. Because Ovid's whole deal was that he saw the gods as petty a-holes and all his re-tellings were to illustrate that.
So people can choose to find meaning in the story as one of surviving SA if they want. But you can also just see her and her sisters through the original meaning of some big ol' monsters with cool powers, and not feel bad about that.

oh please do "Menu" , i can't wait to see it!!
It would be awesome if you would do a pitch meeting for the original Clash of the Titans (1981) as well!
The classic Greek dramatic formula: a love story between MAIN CHARACTER and PRETTY EXPOSITION LADY. Echoes throughout all Western art.
I don't think I've seen 90% of the movies the Pitch Meetings are about but I never miss one 😁
It's really strange that you watch almost zero movies... Missing out on so much in your life :(
Congratulations..... *Nobody Cares*
@@cenciende9401 I watch a lot of movies, just not the ones in the Pitch Meetings. New movies don't seem to interest me and I end up watching a lot of older ones.
@@rinraiden couldn't agree more. I watch new stuff to torture myself and then old ones to remember why movies are worth it... and I never miss a pitch meeting even though I haven't seen 90% of them.
I watched the original in middle school but I never actually seen this version.
I actually also once fell asleep in the middle of the teacher reading a text version of Perseus' story and had a dream that had something to do with gorons lol.
Congrats on 1 Mil! 👏🏾
I have no intention to ever watch this movie in my life and never heard of it in the first place.
But we have a pitch meeting and I am here for it
Trust me, you ain't missin' much... this movie was _trash._
@@PeteTheGrouch To each their own eh, I actually enjoyed it very much
@@Mash__d mhm mhm…I’ll order a new mind for you, if that’s okay? It’ll take a couple weeks to get in, but I think you may enjoy it
Thank you for releasing... this video.
You're always Kraken me up.
Oh, the pun, the pun 🤢🤮😉
Ohh *yes!!* My band name is now Sudden Giant Blood Scorpions! And the tracks on the album will be titled:
-Pretty Exposition, Lady
-Use These (as Little Horsies)
-All The Ugly Witches
-Don't Believe Oracles
-Hey Shaddap
-Sword From Zeus Isn't Just a Euphemism
-"Oh No!!!!"
-Know How To Tame (feat. These Djinn People)
.......and many more!
The movie reads like a video game:
Objective: Acquire Medusa's head
Oh PLEASE do a Flash Gordon Pitch Meeting! It's a classic!!
My favourite thing about this movie is that Nanny McPhee is in it. I think Emma Thompson said in an interview that they were filming in studios next to each other and she paid Liam Neeson a visit and hid behind his throne in a scene. The camera was on Fiennes but anyway.
"Don't Pay the Boat Operator Guy" is my favorite Chris de Burgh song.
Pitch meetings are great but so are Ryan's post credits...dude's always coming up with something fresh 😂
The plot of the movie does in fairness make slightly more sense than the actual story of Perseus. Those Greek myths were pretty out there.
This was a junior high school book report with big budget effects and a sequel
Actual story of Perseus is much better, it's more personal and conflicting involving safety of Perseus's own mother as well as lots of adventure. And the best part is that in there Hades is an ally while Poseidon is the villain releasing the cetus monster to kill Andromeda.
Thanks for your videos… they’re always put a smile on my face 😊
I've seen both the original version of this movie and the remake that's covered here, and I don't remember much about either, but I do remember one specific thing. In the original, there's an owl automaton that accompanies Perseus throughout at least a portion of the movie. This character isn't in the remake, but at one point when the characters are in some kind of junkyard, Perseus picks up either the original prop of the owl or something that's been very well designed to look like the original prop, which was a nice little easter egg
The little mechanical owl was called Bupo and he was a Gift from Zeus that was Created so that he could help Perseus in his Adventures.
You know, I think this might be the first time I knew this remake even existed, or my brain wiped that knowledge away a decade ago... either way, thank you for the upload
