Hello there. As they expand their library of streaming content, Disney has been absolutely churning out streaming shows tied to some of those most popular characters and franchises. After series like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, the House of Mouse has now released a show about who is arguably one of the most well-known Star Wars characters- Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Obi-Wan Kenobi raises a lot of questions though. Like how did Obi-Wan intend to protect Luke without keeping up his training in any way? How did Reva know that the powerful Bail Organa would reach out to Obi-Wan instead of his network of people? How is killing a bunch of Jedi a good way to get revenge on the guy who killed a bunch of Jedi? What was up with that weird laser fence scene? How did making a fire help Obi-Wan escape from Vader, who had just started a fire of his own? Why would Obi-Wan leave Darth Vader alive?

It sounds like Disney is slowly planning to reboot the whole series so that their creations better fit the original stuff

But other that there'll be some minor tweaks that remove any sense of continuity of storytelling and just be lots of unconnected action scenes where long dead actors disturbingly rigid CGI faces turn up, say "Hi, I'm and " before disappearing and having absolutely nothing else to do with the rest of the 'story', sorry, bad habit... 'unconnected action scenes'.
It'll finish with the remodelled death star that now for some reason has 2 additional slightly smaller spheres evenly spaced on top. The rebels will fail to destroy it and realise that actually life is great under their oppressive overlords and they should just learn to live with it and appreciate the friends they made a long the way.

The writers could have at least _tried_ to make up a reason why Obi Wan would walk away the _second_ time after not finishing off Anakin. He gets the premonition that Luke is in danger and has to run, the Emperor shows up to save Vader, he remembers he left the oven on... literally ANYTHING other than, "Welp, I guess I learned nothing from what happened last time. Have fun surviving and continuing your reign of sith terror, Darth."
Why would they do that when they did not really put any effort into making any other part of the story make sense.
That's what irks me about this show. Everything else was contrived just to get them to have a rematch. And the fight itself was very good. But there is literally no reason that Obi Wan should spare Vader at the end. As good as that fight was, the existence of this show really doesn't make sense.
But Luke wasn't in danger.

i have not seen the show, but the clip of 10 year old Leia "escaping" her kidnappers by running like a a toddler is just hilarious
the kidnappers even chase her as if they're an uncle playing with their 2 year old niece, ""running" as slow as possible to avoid actually catching the kid

He generously ignored the way Darth Vader's underwater base has glass that shatters easily under blaster fire. In a base full of stormtroopers.
Structurally flawed underwater fortresses are TIGHT
It took 2.5 seasons to redeem Prince Zuko for the reign of terror he set in throughout the world while searching for the Avatar. It took 1 scene of Reva not stabbing a child after years of betraying and murdering her fellow Jedi. Clearly, this is the superior method to save time (at the expense of any potential entertainment value or emotional investment)
10 points to the light side for a great cultural reference, Avatar character arcs were well done..
To be fair, we don't know what the writers were thinking or if Reva is intended to return. Her sparing Luke could be a lazy attempt at a redemption "arc", but it could also be just the first step on her road to redemption.

"Star Wars fatigue" isn't a real thing. If these movies and shows were actually good and not just platforms to push a feminist agenda, then every movie and show would be a massive hit. I haven't watched any Star Wars since The Last Jedi, but it has nothing to do with there being too much Star Wars. I can't go back to that world after they shat all over Luke Skywalker. No matter what they try to do to salvage his character in The Mandalorian or whatever, I cannot forget how he will end. I just can't go back to that world, even the original trilogy. And this sucks because before that abortion of a movie, I was going opening weekend to every Star Wars release since the Special Editions.
Making good stories with good characters and you will be successful every time. Make shit stories with characters being overpowered if they're women and abject failures (or comically evil) if they're men and people will walk away.
Star Wars fatigue surfaced back around when the third new movie was released and that bombed at the box offices. Solo, was it? Rogue One was the only one that had some originality and wasn’t just pushing for money,..

The “if Obi-Wan is not training and has no Force powers how does he protect Luke” hit me hard. I didn’t think about that. I thought about a lot of other flaws in the shows tho.
Obi-Wan should have been training pretty hard, like Uncle Iroh in the prison.
Obi-Wan isn't exactly in a mentally healthy spot at that time, so his lack of logic makes a lot of sense.
Tala had no force powers and she did a great job at protecting people...until she deployed the thermal detonator. I wonder if that's where Leia gets the idea from in Return of the Jedi?
@@ecobasetech4558 That protection would have totally failed if Reva hadn't decided to just randomly not kill them. In fact it failed regardless. My point is they definitely should have died. But can't have that. Contract issues.

One thing that i really love in these pitch meetings is that you actually don’t know who’s the sane person and who’s insane. Sometimes the producer sounds like he’s the voice of reason and sometimes it’s the writer and madness applies on both!

I love how producer guy's lines consistently show that he has never seen the original or prequel trilogies! Like even when writer guy says that Vader needs to be alive because he's gotta be in the other movies producer guy assumes it's a contract thing rather than the fact that he's LITERALLY ALREADY in the other movies. It's the lines like that that make these pitch meetings so dang good!

Yeah, I noticed this as well. Bit of a jab at guys like the showrunner for Obi-Wan who had asked Pablo Hidalgo lore questions that were clearly answered in the prequel movies. Like maybe give those a rewatch before you start writing this show. It is like they write them not knowing the other movies happened sometimes.
Pretty much reflects the Lucasfilm writers.

What's fascinating to me is that, I felt pretty certain that a show focusing on Obi-Wan would be a huge success, critically and financially; turns out to be the weaker of the Star Wars series on Disney Plus.

@@JurgenErhard I think, during the time it was first announced, a ton of people were talking about this online and getting really amped about it -and understandably so! You would think a story focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi would be exciting and edgy! Ended up awkward and nonsensical at times!
The Book Of Boba Fett was way worse IMO, atleast this one had some cool moments, but yeah it was very mediocer overall
Should've just done a side story about Obi-Wan in some adventure on Tatooine. For God's sake, don't try to involve Darth Vader and Leia. That's just asking for continuity errors!

Your ability to spot, and call out, the absurdity in show and movie scenes is top notch!
Kinda weird they didn’t talk about Reva’s parkour through the city, making sure it was just long enough that she didn’t immediately catch up with Obi-Wan and Leia but when Leia is running through the tunnels she instantly teleported to where she needed to be despite Leia having a massive head start.
Ex machina jedi teleportation powers are tight!
Or the fact that the "impregnable" Fortress Inquisitorious was so easy to sneak into, or when Tala sat right next to 3 bad guys while staying on comms with Obi-Wan, or the fact that they didn't launch any tie fighters during the escape...actually, I'd like Ryan to do an entire video on Episode 4.
Her very slow climbing down the one building was extra hilarious considering bracing yourself with the force to jump from taller places is suoer easy, barely an inconvenience. I'm pretty sure every force user in every IP has done it once except her lol.
Leia’s ability to outrun people via jumpcut is tight!

Star Wars always was partially cartoon. IDK why people think it wasn't. There always were cartoonish scenes, especially in the prequels with the non stop CGI sight gags and literaly cartoon characters like that Diner and Jar Jar Binks and things like that.
Nicely done! Cramming so many plot holes into 7 minutes is a feat to behold.
The biggest one for me is the fact that according to this Vader now know he can get to Obi-wan at any point through Bail and Leia.. which is kind of a big deal.
… which is why they included the scene at the end of the Emperor telling him to end his obsession with Kenobi. He couldn’t do anything more.
exactly - why would the emperor want to track down one of the last two surviving masters of the Jedi Council? Clearly it's better we just forget about it, since overlooking the exisitance of two hidden members of the opposing force tradition worked out so well for the Jedi.
The fact that they needed to shoehorn in a scene at the end with the Emperor telling Vader to just drop the matter was absolutely insane. He doesn't want Vader filled with anger and rage, like an actual Sith? He doesn't want to pursue and kill the one person who could pose a threat? If a writer has to do dumb stuff like that just so it will tie in to the pre-existing movies, then that writer has no talent whatsoever.

Don’t forget he has a huge ass empire to run and putting your best enforcer to chase obsessively after one guy that doesn’t a pose a threat to you (at least from his perspective, he doesn’t know about Luke yet) isn’t a good use of resources.
@RahulPatel-og2ke that's such a cope and you know it. Palpatine would 100% be down for Vader tracking down Obi Wan freaking Kenobi. For all the emperor knows, Kenobi can lead them to more Jedi, even Yoda. This is a horribly written show and you know it.
I like they pointed out how ridiculous it was for Reva to have all the stormtroopers shoot at the door only to later cut it open with a lightsaber.

I looked away from the TV for like a second and looked back and she was dragging Obi to safety and I had to ask my wife "wait, did they escape?" "Yes" she said, but she couldn't tell me how.

The plot for Kenobi sounded like one script writer- with no idea what happens in the original trilogy- handed in their homework for the afternoon, and after really sucking up to the top execs, they were given the go-ahead, and six other people with less authority spent the entire time subtly trying to fix parts that would mess with the original canon without messing with the original favored script writer's work too closely.
Why, why do they insist on attempting these kinds of prequels where the opportunities to mess up are just endless. At least Rogue 1 only had a loose connection, in this one every single line has the potential to ruin the original trilogy. Does the interaction between DW and obi wan in episode 4 lose its gravity? How about Leia sending a message to obi wan after they have obviously spent a bunch of time together at this age? It just never ends well.

This is so accurate and I love how he doesn't have to make fun of anything, the ridiculousness of the writing speaks for itself.
I can’t get over the fact I’ve watched a thousand pitch meetings, and I laugh hysterically at the same phrases time and again. Not to mention, it’s so brilliantly done, I literally forget it’s one guy playing two roles. Ryan is underpaid, regardless of how much he’s getting.
I get unreasonably excited when I realize he's about to say it, and laugh every time in spite of knowing it's gonna happen. Like when Andrew Rousso says "phuck!" like he's sneezing at the end of most of his videos; it never gets old.
I like when he sneaks in the quick and barely audible "ya, shutup" when bossman sarcastically calls out the nonsensical plotlines
Our squishy human brain is just a giant pattern recognition machine. It likes finding and recognizing patterns.
Ryan has found that sweet spot of recognition of the pattern, using the pattern differently every time so our adhd brains don’t get bored, and rewarding our brains for enjoying said recognition.

"It's a contract issue" is probably the funniest line in any of these pitch meetings, and I can't believe I missed it the first time I watched this.
Everyone is talking about the catch phrases "super easy barely an inconvenience" and " (...) is TIGHT", but my all time favorite is when the producer guy says " I guess that makes sense"

The best thing about these videos, to me, is imagining that these meetings to make these movies happen EXACTLY like this. I love to imagine that something with this much money behind it is simplified to this level and i dont know why. Love this stuff.
So...
1. Action with very little stakes or consequences
2. Characters gaining and forgetting abilities as the plot demands
3. Retconned characters with no impact
The ultimate combo of mass produced content + stories that are neutered by existing canon.
I mean the first point was bound to happen consider we already know the fate of most of the characters in the series.
@@nkkenlken3220 Good writers can do prequels without falling into this trap by introducing characters the other's care about or by having an intentionally lower stakes story. I'm not even kidding when I say that's something the Prequel Trilogy did pretty well.
And the Star Wars fans still praise it to heaven and back. Which is why Disney will never put effort into their content again.
But at least there was a majority of female writers, so we all applauded.

Bail Organa sending a message to Obi-Wan when he thought something bad may have happened made me think i was having a stroke.
I can practically see the "spying on ten year old boys through binoculars is tight" line lying on the cutting room floor. Probably a good call.
It was obvious that should have been the line, and was startling when it wasn't.
I just realized Leia is always being kidnapped. In the first movie, that was the whole plot of rescuing the princess. The second movie she and Han were kidnapped to lure Luke into a trap. And by the third movie she's being captured by both Jabba and little bear Ewoks. She is constantly imperiled but at least by the third movie she has more of a sense of agency behind it e.g. killing Jabba and being worshiped by the Ewoks.
And here is Disney once again trying to subvert out expectations and demolish gender stereotypes but actually doing exactly what we expected and reinforcing those stereotypes with titanium plating.

Yeah, Vader kidnapped her in New Hope, then he kidnapped her again in Empire (after she got eaten by a space worm). Then she got kidnapped by Jabba and by the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi.
It's kinda her thing.
That Laser gate where they could just walk around it....just did it for me with that series. It felt like hey, lets have a load of cool scenes that everyone wants to see and hang a half arsed script around it. No one will think any of it through as they will be distracted by cool scenes.
I assumed they were gonna drive the truck after shutting off the laser, but nope, they just went off walking. It was so easy to make them turning off the laser be a sensible move. It was right there. It's baffling to me how they can be this dumb with these easily fixable plotholes or nonsensical decisions.
Another one is Darth Vader not extinguishing the fire the 2nd time, letting Obi Wan escape. The show literally showed Vader extinguishing the flame just seconds ago, so why can he suddenly not be able to? Again, another easily fixable scene by just not showing that Vader can extinguish the flame with a force push in the first place.
I liked the part when Disney writers made obi wan think about little kids in order to get his powers back. Very on brand for Disney.

3:49, to be fair, that’s also the case in the original movies. In the 1977 Stat Wars movie the film starts with Darth Vader kidnapping her and her having to send a distress signal to General Kenobi. In Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader kidnaps both her and Han Solo and tortures them to use them as bait to lure Luke Skywalker into a trap. In Return of the Jedi, she’s kidnapped by Jabba the Hutt.
This was worth the wait, but I thought for sure the line would be: "So Vader leaves Reva for dead on a deserted planet, but she needs to get to Tatooine by the beginning of the next episode!" That's impossible. "Actually, sir, it's gonna be super easy, barely an inconvenience!"
She used those teleportation powers that she used to get to the tunnel to kidnap Leia a couple episodes ago!

This show was honestly the final nail in the coffin for Star Wars for me. Its when I realized the franchise was dead and I need to stop caring and move on. So I did. I dont know how you can mess up an Obi Wan show but they somehow did.

it's even more egregious when the supposedly highly trained troopers (and the ragtag partisans) all start firing at each other in a tunnel WITHOUT ever looking for cover. like, wtf? why stand in the MIDDLE of a fucking TUNNEL while dressed in WHITE when everyone's really got nowhere else to shoot??
even better: the stormtroopers barely hit anyone with their superior firepower. the partisans with rusted weapons managed to hit a few, and they instantly fall dead, despite their shiny white armors.

@@alveolate Even better that chick with the robot pointlessly sacrifices herself with a thermal denotator that is designed to be thrown like a grenade and subsequently does no damage to the enemy team advancing. They were far away enough to not be affected by the blast and for her to easily throw it and remain in cover under the robot.

Well to be hired at Disney nowadays you have to be a "progressive" activists first and a screenwriter second or third or fourth. It really doesn't matter as long as you can inject the show with "the message".
I assume every job is gotten through contacts rather than actual talent. Since the market has gotten the people used to garbage scripts and cliché plotlines, they can afford to hire whoever and still make bank. People largely don't care about talent and actual value, and this is true for most mediums nowadays. They just want more of the same.

Hey, we got some stuff like that from the prequel‘s, it was just harder to notice because there’s a 20 year separation and most of the characters are dead, this is just what happens when you try and tell other parts of the story, no matter how well thought out they are

It never fails to astonish me how these Cinematic Universes routinely feature writing worse than the average related fanfic. It's just marvelously entertaining and helps the average viewer feel superior to Hollywood millionaires.
The continuity and logical structure of these serialized shows are amazingly bad. I'd like to see some investigation into why, just out of curiosity. Are these young, inexperienced writers? Older writers who have mostly written episodic shows, and so are not used to tracking continuity? Producers cutting corners on script supervisors?
@@EndPoliticalCorruption I worked for a major Hollywood studio as a writer, and I gotta say that sometimes the director screws up the story, but even if they don't the producer(s) almost always will. If you pitched The Wizard of Oz, they'd like it but want to change it so Dorothy seduced the Scarecrow and prevented a nuclear war, and also can we get Cate Blanchett in this with some weird European-ish accent.

@@inspectorwhoreacts Yeah, they didn't bother changing his name. And she did question Owen. My issue with this is really that she had no reason to find Owen suspicious. He came off anti Jedi and seems to legit be anti-Jedi TBH, so he's not even lying here. There's nothing suspicious about him. Correct me if I'm wrong, but she never came across anything tying Owen to any of this. And if they talked about "the boy" it could be anyone.

There is also the sudden switch to shoulder mounted cameras that gave it a b-movie feel... or the transport that can juke from side to side and then birth a slightly smaller ship out of it's cargo hold... or when Vader takes down the first ship but ignores the other one that actually has his former master on it.
I noticed the same, here and there there's some serious clashing with the rest of the rest of the shows feel.
Would have made more sense if vader mentally controlled the pilot to make the ship land, then Reva attacks Vader so he has to stop controlling the pilot and the ship can escape.
It was also ridiculous to see the Imperial destructor shooting at the small ship and always failing.
Oh, the shaky cam was so terrible! Is it some free plugin for Adobe Premiere? It looked like garbage.
He was exhausted and had to catch is breath. We've rarely seen such a display of force power in Star Wars. Even for Anakin, that must've taken a lot out of him
I thought that scene would have made much more sense if Vader grabbed the ship out of the sky, but as he pulled them back in, then Reva would have tried to stab him the back, allowing them to escape.

Now, if it was something completely new, that Disney made up, then we'd have a problem, but fortunately that's not the case.

I’m fact, Qui-Gon being dead is just an exclamation point on this phenomena. Reva and G.I. survive the same gut stab, Maul gets cut in half and survives a huge fall, all because of vengeful rage. #JustSithThings

I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned Liea has the dialogue of a grown adult and we don’t get to see her grow as a character sense she was essentially prebuilt with leadership skills from the get go as a child. Very inspiring.

My favorite part of the show was when Anakin and obi wan have their finale fight scene, and then obiwan flies away into empty space, and there isn't a giant destroyer ship still idling there, ya know the one Vader deployed from, and had the grand inquisitor on it, etc...

I don't dislike the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, but it feels like the opposite of Better Call Saul, in terms of being a prequel. One does it masterfully and surprises you with how much tension and suspense it can create despite you knowing so many future details. The other getting road blocked at every turn and awkwardly adhering to the cannon with more stumbles then deliberate steps.

You forgot to mention how the inquisitor just got stabbed without a fight by someone standing right in front of him that he knew was upset with him. He also was theoretically stronger then her but he couldnt even feel it coming through the force.
The ability to sense incoming attacks through the force is proportional to the amount of plotarmor a forceuser is wearing. His plotarmor wasn't enough.
@@Elias_Ehler Enough plot armor for the strike to be a temporary inconvenience (he's got to show up for _Rebels_ in five years), but not enough to sense her killing intent. That's a very specific amount of plot armor.
Also it makes it seem like Reva has been pretty much subordination incarnate for her entire time there. If she wasn't a main character she would have been executed for that ten times over already Darth Vader has killed for far less.
