It's stated in the books that Robert never sent assassins after them only that one instance and only because Dany got pregnant. Before that Robert just view them as two pathetic children at the other side of the world. So yeah, Viserys was paranoid.

@@Viffido no he wasn’t because he was right, obviously they wouldn’t be “pathetic children” forever, if viserys and Danny married and had like 6 children all to be used for political purposes, Robert would try to kill them and most probably even before they ever married, viserys was right in a long con kind of way, and the assassin thing wasn’t just from Robert , Viserys was wise to move from place to place because being the last 2 members of a family that’s able to ride dragons, is very dangerous especially given their vulnerable state since we saw that it wasn’t only Robert that tried to kill Daenerys and Viserys. Viserys had every right to be paranoid. Even if Robert hadn't sent assains yet. I would imagine I'd be just as paranoid that the people who murdered babies in their beds would come after me too. So his paranoia was not unfounded. This does not make his cruelty acceptable

He was a boy with memories of his brother dying in a war, his father the Mad King stabbed in the back by his own Kingsuard, caring for Dany after her birth led to his mother's death... yeah, not saying he was a Saint but that's a pretty traumatic childhood experience, definitely destroyed his trust in others. Also when he was born, it was after a series of miscarriages from Rhaella and the King (Aerys) was so overprotective that he locked Viserys up and not even Rhaella could see him for a while. When she was finally allowed to see Viserys, that's also when Aerys started abusing Rhaella and its very likely that Viserys heard or witnessed this. He was crowned by Rhaella and after her death, when they had to flee, he sold that crown and earned himself the title the beggar king. Dany said after he sold it all that was left in him was rage. Viserys was also afflicted by madness, and usually its the second Targaryen that is born that way. I’ve always felt a lot of pity for him, hes such a tragic character but there wasn’t much that could be done for him

A childhood running away from assassins who had taken away everything you've ever loved, selling away your pride & sentimental possessions bit by bit (their mother's crown), all whilst "taking care" of a baby sister. Can anyone see how that might be just a lil bit unhinging? LOL.
Such a tragic character, the depth of Visery's backstory is awesome. A shame that most people (at least that i've watch the show with or spoken to about the books years ago irl) don't look past the abusive nature, & see how it's just as easy to become that way themselves.

Nope, Viserys did nothing of note other than bicker and try to speak his way into royalty. Even Danerys marriage was something that Ilyrio arranged. If Viserys had truly been wise and resourceful, he would have befriended or tried to befriend Drogo or at least skilled himself to be respected as a king. Remember this is a land where people with Power, Money and pull are respected. While Viserys was not wrong in expecting to be king, he did very little to achieve it. Selling off his sister as an asset (Which we in the modern world called Pimping and rightfully so) was the only "good" political move he did and he didn't even wait for the right time. In a real world, people who are dreaming big at least prepare themselves properly and wait. Yes, they fail, but they at least prepare well and are not delusional and entitled like Viserys. The game of thrones is a disgusting world indeed.

I kind of feel bad for Viserys if I want to be honest. Granted he was a colossal prick and an abusive excuse of a man but it wasn't entirely his fault.
He grew up completely sheltered in the red keep, because his mother was afraid that his mad father would one day turn his sick attention towards him. Then a war breaks out, he and his mom have to flee to dragonstone and there she dies while giving birth to Daenerys. So Viserys is already angry at Daenerys for killing his mom.
Then he and his sister are smuggled to safety by ser William darry and other loyal servants. Time and time again they had to run away because Robert was hunting them down as if they were some animals (and for crimes they had no part in)
Ser William darry, the only paternal figure Viserys could hope that would have make him a proper man suddenly falls sick and dies. And then the ungrateful servants run away with much of the Targeryen recourses thus condemning Viserys and Daenerys to just starve to death.

His fate was sealed practically the moment he struck that bargain with Drogo. He made the mistake of thinking of Drogo as just another mercenary or robber baron he could enlist by pimping his sister, and that once he’s king he’ll just toss them some titles and plop them on some bog land somewhere. Drogo’s like “thanks for the gift, little man. But these warriors are loyal to me, not you. This is MY army and my empire, which I’m gonna build on the rubble of yours if I feel ambitious enough. Your sister is just the icing on the cake. She’s the key to MY claim. Now go water the horses😆”
That’s why Illytio told his dumbass to stay in Pentos. He knew what a terrible impression he’d make on the Dothraki if he rode with them. Also figured Viserys might use the time to enlist more allies, so that he’s not just relying on Drogo.

Viserys grew up in the Red Keep, protected with a mother who loved him and a father who Viserys was kept ignorant about his true insanity. He was the spare to the Throne and most likely well taken care of.
Then it appears that his father is being rebelled against for no reason. His brother disappears with Lyanna Stark and he's moved to Dragonstone with his pregnant mother. His beloved mother dies in childbirth, leaving Dany only with the girl who cared for her as their "birthright"is stolen, his father is betrayed and the children are nearly betrayed by the garrison before loyalists steal them away to Braavos(or not Braavos, given the stories around it).
Viserys lives in exile, with the Targaryens robbed and thrown out when Willem Darry, their last supporter, dies(not knowing of the marriage pact Darry signed for him). He lives in terror of being assassinated and says that Robert has "made attempts"(which is sheer paranoia, as we find out that Robert decided to follow Jon Arryn's advice and let the children live, against his better judgement). He sells his last heirloom of his kingdom and his mother when he sells her crown and Dany says that was when he lost all his joy in life. He feasted different sellsword companies and begs for help to take the Seven Kingdoms and is laughed at. All the while, he looks after Dany, sometimes being a good brother, but more often lost to rage and taking it out on the only person he feels he can.
At Illyrio's house, he's still mocked as the Beggar King. His impatience and arrogance nearly makes him ruin the deal with Khal Drogo and his sister shames him on the Dothraki sea by making him walk, which is only compounded when Drogo offers him the cart(for cripples and eunuchs)and is mocked as "Sorefoot King'and "Cart King"in turn.
In Vaes Dothrak, he is "ordered"to come to dinner with Dany, which gets his back up(which is likely why he treated her so poorly). However, on the other side of things, by the time they arrive in Vaes Dothrak, Dany is already planning to usurp him, though maybe not out loud(she notes as she considers the Bloodriders, comparing them to the Kingsguard, when her SON takes the Iron Throne, he will need Bloodriders of his own. Why would Viserys allow that unless he was dead?)Dany stands up to him and he promises revenge. Then he attempts to steal the dragon eggs and Jorah spurns him(Jorah, who swore his service to Viserys and promptly abandoned and ignored him soon after in favor of Dany.)
Lets consider all this before Viserys, drunk, comes to the tent where the Khals are partying, is stopped by Jorah on Dany's orders and then told he can't sit with the Khals, but can sit with the eunuchs, cripples and braidless boys as the Khals laugh at him. Viserys, drunk, broken and laughing and crying, draws his sword as he weeps and threatens Dany, wanting his crown. When Dany translates and Drogo makes his promise(Viserys's death), Viserys puts up the sword and finally smiles. "Thats all I wanted. What was promised." Dany says the smile was what hurt her afterwards.
With all we learn of him, I see Viserys as one of the most tragic characters of the series and he just wanted ONE thing to go his way. To have a promise kept, to get something to make him not feel like a weakling and a beggar.

    Khal Rhaggat.
But seriously, I sometimes even see Viserys as a victim of Dany. The proof is also in the text. Go and re-read AGoT.
The chapter before Visery's death, Dany arrives in vaes dothrak, and her and Jorah chat about westoros, about how the kingsuard didn't work as a member (Jaime) betrayed Aerys. Dany then remarks in her inner monologue, "WHen my son sits the iron throne, he will have bloodriders before a kingsguard" (They come up to Drogo's weird hut palace and she sees his bloodriders out front)
Note, viserys is well and truly alive. He is looked down upon, but he has done nothing yet to deserve to die.
Dany was already planning on how to get Viserys out of the way.
Now dany is a narcissist. SHe has a self conceptualized idea of herself as good, benevolent and kind. However, she is also power hungry, and willing to do just about anything to get that power, so long as it doesn't mess with her self image she uses to cope and justify herself.
Eg after viserys dies, Dany goes from loving wife to schemer, Trying to fin ways to manipulate drogo to invade westoros. Now eventually Varys' plot with the wine merchant and jorah saving her works, and drogo gets motivated to attack Bobby B. Next chapter is the rape of the Lhazarean. Dany solidifies herself and says she is th blood of the dragon and that this is all fine, and looks away from the horrors. Childrens heads litter the street. She even looks away from Ereoh who is being raped. It's only when the girl lets out such a blood curling scream of desperation Dany is affected and turns around and "saves" her. It's only that Eroeh found a way to make danny uncomfortable, that Dany bothered to do anything.
    It hurt her self image.
Then next chapte, Drogo is dying. Dany, literally has the gall in her internal monologue to think somthing like "Why were the gods so cruel. She had finally found a safe place. Love. SHe was finally going home"
One chapter ago, at her behest, Drogo was pillaging and raping an entire town/city to buy boats to get to westoros. Yet when life hits her, "the gods are cruel".
I think Dany wanted viserys out of the picture from about chapter 2/3 of hers. SHe just didn't know how to do it without breaking her own self image. I think she deliberately shamed him in front of the khalasar so they would never give him an army. To forc a confrontation she would eventually benefit from.
That being said, viserys did himself 0 favours. But he really only features in 3 chapters. Bringing Dany to Drogo's pentos party. Slapping Dany in the great grass sea and then being demoted to Khal sorefoot then Kha rhaggat. Then his death chapter.
We could always argue that Dany, as a victim of him herself was taking out all her resentment. Overall though i don't think he deserved to die. Fair outcome is exile, and he lives, or more likely dies, on his own.

After reading "Fire & Blood" I came upon a curiosity. On page 374 ArchMaester Gyldyne's observance of Prince Laenor Velaryon and the purple eyes, aquiline nose and silvery white hair that bespoke his Valyrian blood. Only one other person in all the aSoI&F books with those three particular physical features is the Darkstar ~ Ser Gerold Dayne.
I began to wonder if the midnight black streak of hair on the Darkstar's slivery-white head was hair dye ala (f)Aegon in DANCE and the blue hair dye of Young Griff. GRRM does display a tendency for the literary device of false identity throughout the 📚 books and I 🤔 think he has a fetish for it honestly. As there are over the course of all the novellas and books more than 27 imposters, substitutes, frauds, bastard deceptions, replacements, child swaps, etc, etc. What false identity would be of greater plot significance than for Ser Gerold Dayne to be revealed in the epilogue of WINDS as 👑 King Viserys III ~ Great-Great grandson of Prince Maekar Targaryen and Lady Dyanna Dayne?!?
It would make all the seeds that GRRM planted throughout the books like DANCE and FEAST make sense 🤔 regarding the Darkstar and why GRRM doesn't want us to know when exactly he was born nor to whom he was born . . . but we do know who gave birth to the newborn Laenor Velaryon don't we? A Royal Targaryen princess in Rhaenys Targaryen aka the Queen who never was so it begs the question for me . . . did the newborn Gerold Dayne have a Royal Targaryen mother too in 👑 Queen Rhaella Targaryen?!?
Keep in mind how Prince Tommen Baratheon (a false identity via bastard deception) was so precious to Lannister loyalists in CLASH as 👑 Stannis sailed with his armada on the capitol . . . that he was placed into a false identity of a dark hair dyed page at Castle Rosby by the Hand of the King Lord Tyrion Lannister. So the precedent for hiding a high value royal child into a false identity at a castle is not an original occurrence then. "Hermitage" translates to the disinherited and so the Castle High Hermitage sounds like a great place to shelter an exiled boy 👑 as it's probably reclusive and removed from the hustle & bustle of common folk and nobles alike going about their daily lives in Dorne.
Why was Princess Myrcella Baratheon (yet another false identity via bastardy) provided a Royal decoy in her cousin Rosamund for her security detail down to Dorne but not one of the Targaryen loyalists on Dragonstone thought 🤔 it might be a good idea to secretly recruit a Royal decoy for Prince Viserys III from among the seeds in Dragonstone village . . . even after the royal family ~ children and all~ were slaughtered during the sack of King's Landing?!? Why does GRRM want us to know about the Valyrian blood that flows through so many of the residents of Dragonstone and how they have purple eyes and platinum hair like Targaryens do?!?

He literally took out his trauma on his little sister because there was nobody there to help him through it. He’s a tragic character. What really fucked me up was how Dany allowed him to be murdered. She got power hungry when she became a Khaleesi. That’s it.

Also there's a new adaptation coming, which means there will be more traffic to GRRM related channels. This is the worst time to start branching out.
