Robert is a tragic character and it's normal to like him or feel for him. The people that hate him are the Rhaegar-Lyanna apologists.
The common people were happy under his reign .
He wasn't that bad as a king he succeeded to keep the peace .
Plus his Rebellion was 100 % legal .
@@chaimae3652 there's no such thing as a legal rebellion. It was fair though.
What was not legal about Robert's Rebellion ?
Νίκος Μελιδονιώτης I don’t love or hate Robert, just never cared much for him. Started a rebellion over a women he barely knew.
Ned had more reason to start and be the head of this rebellion tbh, the crown abducted his sister, murdered his dad and brother and asked for his head.
But meh, guess that’s just how the story goes.
Feel very sad for Robert. He loved his best friends sister. Died thinking she loved him back. Died thinking how she might have suffered before dying. Can't blame him for being a bad king or being an alcoholic. He was traumatized. Probably never wanted to be king just wanted to get his love back.
rj I think by the time we see King Robert he is a shadow of his former self. He was traumatized by his parents death and more so by losing his true love.
The fact that you have such a simplistic, naive, and one-sided view of his mindset and circumstance shows that your emotional maturity level is still not up there yet.
@@ZhangK71 He said it himself. Should have been Ned that had the throne
He didn't even know who Lyanna actually was. He made her into a perfect model and blamed all his massive failures, as a King, husband, and children, on "losing" Lyanna. He couldn't own up to just being a shitty person as he grew older.
Essen Slug I reaffirm my statement: Anyone who can sum up someone’s life-especially that of Robert Baratheon-as a black-or-white judgment is too young, whether physically and/or mentally. Because joffrey was such a damn disaster himself. Joffrey was probably the worst king they had.
Robert Baratheon was the best King that we have been shown on TV. That says a lot about how bad the other Kings and Queens on the TV adaptations have been 😂 I guess the Good Kings and Queens don't create enough trouble for our entertainment 🤔 I'd love to see them do the Blackfyre Rebellion or Robert's Rebellion
I also only watched the shows.
From what I have seen, his worst quality as a king was being a spendthrift.
He knew he wasn’t made for managing a country, so he chose a very good hand (Jon Arryn and, later, Ned Stark) whom he trusted entirely. His council wasn’t bad. I would say Pycelle and Littlefinger were the biggest problem there.
Yes, he was a drunk and lustful man, but he also knew he wasn’t made for kingship, assigning thoses duties to men more suited for this.
Imagine a prequel series following young Aerys, Steffon and Tywin. Pure gold
Should be a fantasy sitcom tbh.
I was thinking it should be a sitcom too, especially the opening sequence like typical 90s upbeat music
That would suck

@@petebondurant58 why would one have to be black, aren't all 3 white?
When they had ridden forth to win a throne, the Lord of Storm’s End had been clean-shaven, clear-eyed, and muscled like a maiden’s fantasy. Six and a half feet tall, he towered over lesser men, and when he donned his armor and the great antlered helmet of his House, he became a veritable giant. He’d had a giant’s strength too, his weapon of choice a spiked iron warhammer that Ned could scarcely lift. In those days, the smell of leather and blood had clung to him like perfume.

The ego of Jaime is quite frankly insane. All 3 of those guys are basically mythological figures of their era. I mean, Arthur Dayne is like their version of Achilles. Jaime wants to act like only old men and dead men once had a chance at beating him. Meanwhile Jaime is living in the same time as The Mountain, The Viper, Lord Beric Dondarrion (an immortal man with fire blood), and The Hound. Where are you getting this info? The book clearly explained that Ned always brings Robert to Winterfell, and I assume that Lyana visits Ned in the eyrie. Lyanna might not love Robert but they knew each other since they were kids.
4:14 She found out about his bastard daughter in the veil and knew he wouldn't remain loyal. he's future marriage to Cercei proved her to be right.
What? Its true that Lyanna didn't love him but it has nothing to do with loyalty. I mean why would she think that while both she and Aegon are also cheating with their betrothed and wife, respectively. And about Cercei, Jon Aryn ever the practical, forced Robert to marry Cercei because they needed the alliance of the Lannisters to the new king. Part of the reason why Cercei is a bitch throughout the series is because Robert made it clear, probably at their wedding day, that he loves a dead woman and cercei will not change that. There is a big possibility that Robert would not whore around if Lyanna was married to him.
I find it very ironic that Lyanna accused Robert of not remaining loyal, but then run away with a married man.
@@thegreatpage5912 Where did she accuse Robert of this, or state that was her reason for not wanting to marry him? I don't recall reading that in the book, only hearing it here in this video. Nothing GRRM that I read stated that she gave a single shit about Robert's bastards.
Meanwhile, @Batotit Oftwotree makes a very good point that contradicts the video - she knew Robert. She didn't love him, but she *knew* him. Also want to agree that if Robert had married Lyanna he probably would have remained faithful, but I think if she'd been forced to marry Robert there was a good possibility of Lyanna turning into the Cersei we see in the show. Hateful, bitter, unhappy, and in love with a man she can't have...

@09hicktown where did he say that in the books. His complaint about Cersei was her nagging and advacment of Lannisters political interests.
So lyanna didn't want robert because he wouldn't be faithful but she got with another guy who was married and...wasn't faithful. 😂😥
I think its unfair to say that Lyanna was "right about Robert being unfaithful". Who's to say what her true reasons were for not loving him the same way he did her. It is true that Robert was unfaithful to Cersei, but Robert never loved Cersei. To remain faithful to someone you can never love would be a difficult task for many men. Had Robert been allowed to pursue his love, it might have changed him as a person. I feel that the true purpose of marriage isn't just to spend the rest of your life with someone. The purpose of marriage is for both parties to become their best selves through union, love, and devotion. When you have married the wrong person, or are wrong yourself, it leads to a toxic and unprofitable situation, much like Robert and Cersei.
Robert Baratheon (in his prime) vs The Mountain.
Robert. His Warhammer would be an effective weapon against the mountain's heavy armor.
Robert is an extremely skilled and quick with a war hammer he's only matched by few in westeros history
Why do you want to see Gregor Clegane dead?
@@Abdul-Akeem_Akinloye Yes, yes I do.
Jamie : "By what's right does a wolf judge a lion"
Me: "By what's right does a stag kill a dragon"lol
"By what's right does a lion stab a dragon in the back"lol
@The Law are you talking about the Tarlys?
A Polar Bear has joined the chat
Stag kill a dragon because rhaeger took his betrothed when his father Stefan died after he went to find rhaeger a wife
Lion stab a dragon in the back cause he was a crazy wanted to blow up the city
Bro a dire wolf would mess up a lion!
The Baratheons were the first House that the Targaryens and Valeryons took into their fold when they came to Westeros after the Doom of Valyria, so it was no surprise that Robert was seen as the heir to the Iron Throne.
They didn’t. Baratheons were founded by bastard brother of aegon the conqueror
There are still those in the seven kingdoms whom call me Userper 😡
The Baratheons would've been so undefeated if Renly, Stannis and Robert were united together
I love that rhaegar got what he deserved his thievery and selfishness caused the deaths of untold men brought about the end of his own dynasty
True, but at some point Aerys would have still shown his true colors. The war simply escalated the process.
@@gabrielcarrasco8414 Perhaps or Aerys could have died from insanity but we will never know but what we do know is that Rhaegar's selfishness caused the deaths of many good men
Nothing is more satisfying than thinking of how Robert crushed Rhaegar's pretty face .
Look at Alt Shift X's video on Rhaegar Targaryren and the prophecy of Azor Ahai
@UC1UGb77j1eM39JAVQk8RP8w lol robert was not gored he was poisened by lancel still managed to kill the boar .
Robert Baratheon was actually a good king. He was at peace with all the other 6 kingdoms.
Others ruled in his name while he drinks, eats and goes to whores.
@@stefanozucchelli5410 exactly, it was pretty much jon arryn and stannis ruling lol
@@karikim6905 But we can see that he take all important decisions. When its not important hes not interested.
@@propheon9789 nah, he barely did anything. The most important decision he made was to have Daenerys killed. 🙄
The internal peace was more of a consequence of circumstance than his good management, that was bad, as we saw how in debt the kingdom was during his reign as a good example of this. The North, Vale and Riverlands were secured thanks to his friendship with Ned and Jon Arryn. They both also married the Tullys, protecting their alliance with the Riverlands. The Lannisters were rich and powerful so securing a marriage with Cersei was the best move (that Jon Arryn and Tywin did btw). Not sure what the Tyrells and Martells did after they lost the rebellion, but the new loyalist alliance around Robert was far superior over the two others lords who also hated each other, so even an alliance with just the two was probably out of the question too.
My dawg back. Been missing you
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Gendry is the rightful heir to the iron throne.
Bastard does not inherit
@Gino Victory doesn't work, Robert died before even knowing about gendry as such, stannis is the rightful heir and is the only one who has the right to legitimize gendry, but since stannis would be king to do that, then gendry would still inherit nothing.
@Gino Victory But Gendry was legitimised by Daenerys who wasnt rightful queen. Stannis was and with him and Shireen the royal line died. Cersei was technically Queen of the Andals etc after Stannis' death cause she held the Iron Throne.
You are mistaken my friend, Stannis is the rightful heir.
Gendry is a bastard and thus the rightful heir to nothing.
Lyanna: Robert could never be loyal!
Also Lyanna: omg he’s willing to leave his wife and kids for me! So romantic!
His father had talked of him often: the peerless Robert Baratheon, demon of the Trident, the fiercest warrior of the realm, a giant among princes.
-Jon I, A Game Of Thrones
Bobby B. was the best king in this entire series. Fight me. ;)
Even better than Jeoffery the kind?
I can't fight you if you're stating facts.
who has a better story than Bran the Broken?
No arguments here.
Stannis would have been if he weren't an idiot.
The dialogue and delivery was amazing. I absolutely loved the early seasons. Just great story telling
I’ve recently started watching your videos and have yet to be disappointed. Thank you for the time and study you put into these.
Liana didn’t like Robert for being a player, but fell for a man with a whole ass family lmao
Yeah but the other guy was the prince and future King she thought so it was okay. Little did she know Robert was actually the future King lmao
@@mysteryjunkie9808 Okay...no. He was married with a member of another eminet House, which could have been legittimately pissed off by that and indeed it was for how Rhaegar had insulted Elia at the tournement of Harrenhal.
I just love when you do the videos with the actual looks/Images from the books and not from the show! Keep up with this great work, congrats!
Robert had quit an advantage compared to the other warriors and knights of Westeros, a warhammer is an effective weapon for destroying armor which most knights use, a sword can pierce armor only with a thrust through the gaps while a hammer could destory armor head on. Most people don't use hammers or maces because they are too cumbersome, making strikes slower and less maneuverable then with a sword but because of Robert's incredible strength he could swing a warhammer without affecting his mobility that much.
Even though I knew that whole backstory, that was an absolute treat. Something about your voice is very soothing and makes the material 10 times more interesting, as interesting as it already is to begin with.
I was rewatching season 1. And when they were near lyannas grave, it was like Sean Bean already knew the secret, so he acted it so well, and so subtle, atleast to me, it now seems so obvious the secret he keeps.
The part with Robert and lyanna is what reminded me.
wish they make a prequel of Robert's rebellion..
Could’ve shown it through Brans visions.. wasted opportunity
Robert Baratheon proved the Targaryens ain't shit without their dragons 😆 mad respect
Aemon the Dragonknight would clobber him, and he's only one in a long line of Targaryens who could at least give him a run for his money.
Thank you for mentioning that most people don't even realize from TV show and the books that is different that Robert is also Blood of The dragon he is 25% Targaryen his grandmother was eggs youngest daughter from the ruling line Robert's father Stephan was the first cousin to the mad King.
He's still technically a usurper, just from a different line of the family.
Alexander Christopher and the Targaryens are foreigners to Westeros. It’s just about who wins and makes it to the top and can stay there.
Alexander Christopher actually no Robert’s ancestor is a Targaryen bastard « orys Baratheon » the half brother of aegon the conqueror so it’s the same family
Need a prequel to the original series! Imagine seeing The Battle of the Trident. Imagine seeing all the events leading up to it and those after!
that would be the sadess thing i have ever seen
Keep up the good work man! Covered Absolutely brilliantly!!! I appreciate these immensely! Would love more character profiles!
My favorite character from the series. He is a lot more wholesome than people give him credit for. He's a real man's man & I enjoy the parts of the story he's featured in a lot
Someone else mentioned it and I agreed.
Lyanna is a damn hypocrite.
She believes Robert will be unfaithful and a defining reason she doesnt love him
YET
She goes off with a MARRIED man, who whether he truly loved his wife or not, still marrried.
Lyanna’s morality has no say to defend her for what she did after hr views on Robert.
If anything, it is worse on Lyanna’s part since she took an already married man. It is not like she just had sex with him and that was that.
Robert Baratheon, the legend wielded a massive war hammer 🔨💥 , a nameless monstrosity of spiked iron, however Rhaegar knew it as the BREASTPLATE STRETCHER
Gino Victory 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@MAN_FROM_BEYOND 😇🙏🏾
If we ever do get Roberts Rebellion series it should be told from Jon Arryns point of view. Dude was ordered by the king to send Ned and Robert to their death and instead he helped them overthrow a dynasty
the history of this world is insane and awesome to see the friendships of each generation and how those friendships affect the generations to come
YAY NEW VIDEO LOVE YOU THANK YOU WHYCREATE
I'm rewatching GOT at the moment and I want a show about Robert so bad. He destroyed Rhaegar in a fight what a monster he must've been.
8:30 that's what separates Robert from a lot of other people winning wars/gaining power. You have to know when to retreat. Robert was bloodthirsty and a drunk AND he probably felt invincible with all his wins under his breastplate stretcher. Yet, he knew when not to push his luck.
"breastplate stretcher"
Lol nice touch
Robert and Stannis are my favourites ! Great video by the way
Keep doing these videos please, Really love them!
Love Robert he actually was a decent king only one rebellion and maintained peace with the north and he wasn't cruel
He was a poor King, the realms debt expanded and lots of corruption happened. However I don't think he was a bad person or wanted to be king.
Game Of Thrones needs a remake but with more story detail. They should start from the very beginning when the Targaryen took over the Westeroes with their dragons and built the 7 Kingdoms
A remake? you mong. lol
They are making the prequel series now,House of the Dragon
There’s lore videos read by the cast read about houses and history all on CZcams.
Thank you for this video, it's rare for me too find details I've never heard of before in the GOT universe
dude u did a good job with this. nice work kid
I would want a show like this showing the young Robert Ned and Tywin and how they got to be also the Targaryen dynasty would be amazing to see
I loved Stannis and Robert. I wish we got a scene with Stannis and Robert.
this is an AMAZING video.. great job !!!
For some reason Robert baratheon was my favorite character
Mine is Tyrion, but Robert is in my toplist too,
Robert was quite a major character in the 1st season of the show, but in book 1 he barely appears
Huh?
What...? He's in the book with pretty much the same frequency as he is in the show.
His relationship with Cersei is more fleshed out. D&D said they added scenes with them because they needed the episodes to be longer
Lyanna was 14 and Rhaegar was 23, that is just weird, that is not love.
Awesome video, super well done and enjoyable
Agreed! Obren was my absolute favorite character as well! I would love to see that video!
the secons spin off has to be roberts rebbelion
I think they said none of them would be that
@@rraw6282 just the like the writers of GoT
@@101mrcrazyman yep :(
@@EssenSlug Actually, the information that I got was that the prequels start with the longest night. This is the first war with the Wight Walkers vs the first men. The second will be about the Targaryen Dynasty and the 3rd is supposed to be Robert's rebellion
are you sure? but all of us would know the final and what happens, i would not be so exciting
I wouldn't mind an animated series about roberts rebellion
I wouldn't mind an entire ASOIAF animated series, to me!
A show on this all would just be the best thing ever
One thing that was completely hidden, or went unnoticed in the GOT series is- how Ned had to sacrifice his love (Ashara Dayne) because of the consequences, Ashara committed suicide, after knowing about her brother's death, and Ned's marriage to Cat. All this while living rest of his life knowing Lyanna wasn't actually kidnapped, and had to sacrifice his honor to raise her child as his bastard.
Still depressed that a character that never had any prominent scenes in the series or chapters in the books died...
Robert deserved POV chapters in AGOT (just like he had more scenes in the show) before he died!
This is a great video! My personal theory is that Bran's time-travelling interference is the reason Lyanna and Rhaegar got together, not out of love or to fulfill a prophecy, but because Bran needs J for the the fight with the others.
This was brilliant 👏 thank you.
Out of all the characters from the war it’s Robert I wish I could’ve seen in his prime. His confidence as king was so bad ass. None of the Lannister kings had the same presence.
Would’ve loved to see him take on a warrior of similar skill
Robert was the most fearsome warrior when he lived. The best fighter in the 7 kingdoms.
