Woodpeckers Parallel Guide System Unboxing, Usage & Review

- I've wanted the WoodPecker Parallel Guide System for Soo long and now I've finally got one.
Here's my review of it covering unboxing, setup, calibration, usage and observations.
I bought mine directly from WoodPeckers in America for two reasons. It wasn't available from a UK or European supplier and it was cheaper to buy direct. I paid $369.99 plus shipping plus import duty and Vat.

😳 I appreciate the review. I have a makita track saw I’ve never had an issue using dovetail clamps
Great review. Thank you SO much.
Thanks for your review. I was on the fence about buying but this video convinced me to buy. As an added bonus, I'll now know how to calibrate thanks to your excellent demonstration. Cheers.
Great tutorial on using the WP PGS. Thanks for sharing. Like many other viewers, I own a similar product, and much appreciate your taking the time to share your experience. You make a number of good points regarding the possible inclusion of a detent to calibrate the guides, and the fact that only one of the stops is critical to the initial setup.
Like you, I recalibrate every time I change rails. 👍
Hi SaltySoup, thank you. 👍
Looks very impressive
HI Paul, it is!
First thing I did was replace the mounting screws with socket head cap screws. One tool for everything. Love mine!
Hi Slappy, damn top idea. 👍😁
Great vid thank you !!!
Thank you. 👍
Thanks for this demo. I have received a similar system and did know very well how to calibrate and use. Your explanations have solved my questions so many thanks. This kind of tool helps may be not to be extremely ccurate but for sure to perform exact repetitive cuts which is the most important. An other point regarding the calibration, i am sure we can imagine a DIY way to set a zero ... Last point regarding this particular brand: so expensive ... way too expensive even though the quality is great. Thanks again Graham
Hi Jean Luc, I agree greatly over priced. 👍
Great review . I’ve wondered how accurate they would be with add on extensions but it’s repetition you’re after I suppose and probably a bonus as you say because you’re not lugging long bars around when not necessary 👍
Hi Toffeenose1966, as did I, but the pudding proved itself, if you follow. 😁
Good as always ! Am looking at benchdogs but like the woodpeckers oh decisions!!
Hi Travis, I know. Where to turn next, so many decisions, the stress of it all. 🤣
Nice new tool Graham! The combination with the Festool track saw appears to make a table saw look obsolete when it comes to sheet materials. Enjoy!!!
Hi Mike, yea for sheet goods in my small workshop its superb.
Hi Graham
Great review, like you these have been on my wish list for a while as I have the Festool set and they are a complete pain to use, trouble is the word is out which is making them difficult to sell
All the best
David
Thanks David, completely agree, I've just covered mine up in the corner somewhere so I don't have to look at them. 🤣👍
I was wondering why I was able to purchase a used Festool parallel guide set so cheaply. The first time I tried using it, I found out. The Woodpeckers version is so much easier to use. Of course, a $30,000 Altendorf sliding panel saw with digital read outs might be easier and slightly more accurate, but on the whole, I'm quite pleased with the Woodpeckers parallel guide set.
With regard to the joiner bar... The latest Woodpecker training video has the trainer join about 25mm to one side of rail and 45mm to the other. In other words, it doesn't appear that the joiner bar needs anywhere near the 50/50 distribution on the rails for accuracy.
Hi Ryan, yes indeed, although a 50/50 split just feels right don't you think? Maybe that's just an OCD thing. 😊
@@GTWoodshop no, it's not just you... Even if it's just aesthetics I prefer it as close to 50/50 as possible myself!
Hi thanks for a very informative video, one question when you carried out the calibration the all-important reference pointer what is the reading on mm scale. Thanks
Hi David, I'm really sorry I don't remember. 😢
Hi Graham, great tutorial.
One question I would like to ask is how did you find the stops and alignment to the metric scale rule, did you get any parallax?
I have heard this mentioned before I just wanted to know your experience on this.
And when you set the stops are you confident they are at the correct measurement.
I only ask as I was torn between the woodpeckers and the TSO and I have the TSO but I feel I will be sending this back as I cannot trust the gauge, I have to double check the measurements with a rule, it just does not sit right when you look down the gauge and it seems more guesswork with the settings instead of accuracy you would expect for a £500 piece of equipment.
The other question is do you leave the heads attached to the extension arms otherwise you have to recalibrate.
Karl, I find it really easy to misalign the stops as they are aligned by sight alone. I would have liked better for the money.
@@GTWoodshop Graham I have found out why I have a inaccuracy in my TSO rails, look at the play in the connection between the heads and rails these are suppose to be self centring but they wobble when fully tightened down.
Won’t let me upload a video to this link.
When you switch from one rail to other do not have to reecalibrate again?
YEs, I do just to make sure as it quite quick to do once you're use to it. 👍
Hi there, do you think this is good enough to do away with a mft top? I am trying to make my mind up to go with a mft top or alternative. I feel the mft thing seems to suck you out of your cash
Hi Chris, that's a hard question to answer. The PGS is superb for cutting down large sheet goods, to large for the MFT table, but it would become cumbersome on smaller parts I feel. The size that the MFT table excels at.
I find they compliment each other. As with all tools, its down to your own primary use. Not sure that was any help to you at all Chris?
@@GTWoodshop perhaps make a bigger mft table is the solution
Just bought TSO model. Honestly I’m a bit disappointed to see they included Phillips head screws. They’re more prone to stripping.
Hi PF, same with WoodPecker. 😢
@@GTWoodshop Sorry I meant with the woodpecker. TSO does not have Phillips head screws
The connectors go on the bottom of the track, not on top.
HI Gregg, its easier to alter with th connectors on top, that was my thinking.
Its $500 now with a month wait because its on back order.
Wow. 😢😢
Turn it up the other way so you can't see the "WoodPecker"
HA!, never thought of that! 😜
???
TSO TSO TSO. Listen I am a big fan of woodpecker precision tools myself. I own no less than a dozen of their tools and love everyone, but that does not make me bias. I know better value when I see it and especially use it. The TSO system is just as accurate, has a more efficient setup, and costs half the price of the Woodpecker system. TSO.......Yes please!
Hi M, thanks for the tip, I have been looking at TSO but they seem even more difficult to find in the UK. 👍
Hi thanks for a very informative video, one question when you carried out the calibration the all-important reference pointer what is the reading on mm scale. Thanks
Hi Dave, could you rephrase the question? Not sure I follow.
@@GTWoodshop thanks for getting back to me but I have sorted out the problem thanks anyway
