In October 2019, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey posted a tweet supporting pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. In reaction, the Chinese government censored NBA broadcasts in China, and Chinese companies suspended business deals with the world's premiere basketball league. As the controversy spun out of control, NBA commissioner Adam Silver, Houston Rockets star James Harden, and NBA All-Star LeBron James were all asked for their opinion on the growing crisis. In this video, we dive deep into the relevant history that led to this critical moment.
For decades, the NBA has been pushing a business strategy to attract fans in China, where basketball is more popular than in the United States. At the same time, the government of the United States has been pursuing a trade policy with China intended to generate profit for American businesses while simultaneously exposing Chinese consumers and businesses to ideas of democracy and free speech through the transactional dynamics of globalization. Originally, the hope of US leaders like President Bill Clinton was that this trade would lead to the democratization of China. What China's fight with the NBA shows is that the opposite seems to be occurring.

China should kowtow to us. Not us to them. We must be prepared to suffer rather than abandon our values and allow restrictions of rights. They are giving people scores now. Not credit scores, but value as a human scores. Considering the population imbalance there, we should be prepared for when they are forced to try and expand their territory

I understand all of what you said such as freedom of expression. But, there is only one thing I had to mention. every country has its red lines. And in China, any single comment that tried to break up our country and spilled our territory badly hurt and offense our values and dignity. We welcome anyone from the world to be our friends and earn money in China. But, respecting our people's values and dignity should be concerned. I don't think it is an undue request just like when we come to America, we respect your lifestyle, your values, your concern and your respect of the black people. I sincerely hope you can understand these. what Daryl Morey said is right a free comment and a free expression, but it broke up our red line, and as a normal and independent country, we have the right to let you decide to respect us or be the enemy. I really don't think it is unreasonable.
And also, I always wonder that you guys always think our Chinese people are suppressed by the CCP or Chinese government. But, what is joyful is that you are not Chinese. I, as a real real and can't be more real Chinese people, guarantee that our life couldn't be finer, we feel safe and free and be respected in China! I beg you guys never use "we want to free Chinese people" as a slogan to interfere with or restrict or blame China any longer! Find other reasons if you have, we don't need "your help" at all.
      in a word,
firstly, IT IS RIGHT AND FEASIBLE TO RESPECT OTHER COUNTRIES' OR NATIONS' RED LINES.
secondly, PLEASE DO NOT SAVE US FROM CCP, WE DO NOT NEED THAT AS A NAME OF FREEDOM.
I entirely hope we can respect each other equally and be great friends.

Also it's not necessarily US being an anomaly for the past 200 years. It's rather that we've seen the "fall and rise" of China, where it kept tripping over its own feet until only the past two decades.

@@LuElv1 You don't necessarily give up "natural Liberty," which was the type of Liberty Franklin was commenting on. In fact, you cannot give up natural Liberty without creating a paradox. Natural Liberty can only be stripped by the use of force. The most pure natural Liberty is liberty of thought. Second to that is liberty of speech. And finally, there's the liberty of self ownership. If you give any of these up, how can you continue to do so of your own free will. You have effectively destroyed your own free will, which is impossible. Because how could you sustain not having a free will without a free will to do the sustaining with. This is what Franklin is referencing. To maintain civilization and order one need only forgo the ancillary benefits of existence, but not existence itself. And houman existence boils down to these three things: freedom of thought, freedom of speech, and self ownership.

@@thonks8729 Capitalism is focused on one specific freedom. And that is private ownership of property. Now when we talk about property in this context we focused on utility producing property. Thing that help you make stuff or services.
Sadly this actually often comes in to conflict with the notion of you being able to be self sustaining. The system of Capitalism is not only OK with people working for other people. But promotes this from of relationship as something good.
Someone own the factory, farmland, building and so on you work in and is not you (For most people in a capitalist model that is. There are of course exceptions). As such your not really free. Especially not if we hold that private prosperity right are above all other rights.
In such a system you do as your told when you employed by someone else or just exist on there property. There commands are laws not to be broken as doing so not respecting someone private property rights.
This is by far not a new concept. In fact old feudalism works on a similar mode. Though the rights officially often is given by god, then transferred to the king which may then transfer it to other feudal lords.
(Though in reality is more that the guy with commands most troops and arms gets to decide and we created some sort of justification for this sort of power balance to help them strength there claim.)
Anyway with such strict adherence to property rights it can really be exploited to oppress people. You need other rights to. And modern democracies actually do try to provide you with lot of rights. Right that may limit prosperity rights. You are for example not allowed to excuse someone on you own property in most parts of the world. Especially not that person is considered invited (but most part of the world actually have laws against putting up traps and using to much violence against trespassers to)
Again people tend to conflate this other rights with a part of capitalism but that is not something you should be sure are there. And when these right are there there actually limiting private ownership rights in some ways.
Naturally I could go on in to more detail. This is actually a extremely complex topic and we likely need to get down to just setting our definitions first so we know we talking on the same level. These terms can mean different thing to different people. Like the term Private Property vs Personal Property used by some can get people confused who are not used to the jargon.
But I think this post is long enough. Especially since my original post was just a once sentence statement meant to make people think about the terms and how mixing them up can be problematic.

"All" the shots would be an overstatement... US did literally just destroy Huawei's reputation in the West, blocking them from crucial Android updates and banning them from distribution in some places (namely the US). I think "Money is calling all the shots" would be more accurate. Those China millions coming in from NBA = 100s/1000s of jobs in the US too, so it's a double-edged sword, no doubt.
