My favorite part of this song is introducing it to people who have never heard it before. Their confused faces are priceless.
I had dinner with Thijs Van Leer (yodeler, keyboardist, whistler, flutist) 2 years ago on a rock and roll cruise!
Coolest comment of all time!!!
Do tell us more.
I attended Cruise to the Edge in February of 2018. I was a solo traveler. On the first night at sea I went to the sushi bar for dinner. (A la carte, costs extra but you know the sushi is fresh on the first day of a 5 night cruise). As I walked in another solo traveler was there and after a 30 second chat we decided to sit together so we could chat about our cruise plans. We sat down and ordered but before it arrived, Thijs Van Leer (whom we both recognized) stuck his head in the door. I jumped up and invited him to join us which he did with a big smile! He sat down, ordered his own sushi and over the next 90 minutes (Focus wasn't playing till the next afternoon) we shared each others sushi and a bottle of sake. He shared many stories of his youth in Holland and of the history of Focus. The most remarkable story was that his great grand father, his grandfather and his grandfather's brothers all escaped death in Nazi concentration camps by entertaining the Nazis with music. He comes from a long line of flutists and he still tours with 2 of the flutes that his family used to survive the war. It brought tears to our eyes! He is a wonderful person that was a joy to meet. I have a framed photo of the 2 of us from that night that I brought on to the 2019 Cruise to the Edge and he personally signed it for me! If you want to see it (I dont think I can post a picture here) go to my facebook page (Robert Heckman). I will change my profile picture to that shot. You should be able to see it without having to "friend" me.
What a great story
@@robertheckman8013 Hey, there's only about a million Robert Heckmans on Facebook. How can we narrow it down, lol.
When you said now I'm ready for it, I started laughing and said no you're not...
This is what you get when TV gives you 3:30 to do a 5 minute song.
That was Miss Gladys Knight introducing them.
Lol!!! I said that same thing! ( late comment- new sub)
He started out unsure and by the end was reeled in. Definitely too fast, but good lord! How can you not give props these Dutchmen 👍.
Midnight Special doesn't limit anything. This is edited for VH1 best of Midnight Special. Go search CZcams for the full version that's over 6 mins long.
They're playing it extra fast to fit it into their time slot on the show. They didn't want to shorten the song. It's certainly unique! 😊💜
Yeah I thought it seemed maybe a bit coked up.
Nope. This is same speed they recorded and was played ad nauseum in the early 70s.
I was there.
And yeah, def coked up, haha 🤣
@@kaiakreations i was there also, though very young. But that's irrelevant as we can listen to both versions here on CZcams and this version is clearly being played much faster than the studio version.
@mamamurray2
Ok, you are so right. I pulled up the recorded version and played it next to this one and I can easily hear the difference.
I can't sing the recorded version either, ha!
@@kaiakreations haha, me either! Doesn't keep me from trying though. 😄
"You ain't gonna do me like this". 😂😂😂. We all knew it was coming and waited with abaited breath for that part. Glad you liked it!
Yupp.. that cracked me up when JV said that... lol!
"I'm used to it now"
Yodeler picks up flute, band rips guitar solo and yodeler whistles like an elf in the forest.
Ready for round 3?
FunnyStrange yes - I loved it when he pulled out " Freddy the Flute" from Puff n Stuff 😂🤣
This is one of those songs that make you say, "Huh? What the--?" when you first hear it.
Then you recognize the immense talent
This song played on the radio a lot when I was in my teens. Everytime my mother heard it she yelled and snarled, "there's that dumb song again." Then without warning she promptly turned it off. I however, being so bad, turned it on to even higher decibels. Those were the days!!!
LOLOLOL The WTF look on your face is priceless!
hahaha, yes, PLENTY of us were "expecting that" :D
I remember hearing this for the first time in 71' and I wasn't expecting this either...
Their musicianship is off the chart. Jan was doing sweep picking no less. There are a lot of awesome live videos of them from this time on CZcams. Amazing time period for music.
Jan Akkerman - amazing !!
It’s a crazy song but a lot of people liked it 🤫
That's because we liked the racket!
lol.... I hit the play button and I heard my mother roll over in her grave say, "Will you turn that radio down?????????" I loved this song cause it was so weird and I played the crap out of it. Enjoyed your reaction, Jay.... take care and be well.
further info:
"Hocus Pocus" is a song by the Dutch rock band Focus, written by keyboardist, flautist and vocalist Thijs van Leer and guitarist Jan Akkerman. It was recorded and released in 1971 as the opening track of their second studio album Moving Waves.
Story goes they were told they had to trim this song from 6 minutes to 4 just as they were to go on stage. They refused and instead just sped it up. Genius!
That story is actually true... The original number is about 7 min, but they got told on arrival Hey, you only got a 4 to 5 min slot, so could you trim it please? To which they esponded with: Nah man, we got it. We'll just double-time it. Hang on to your socks...
@@metatron76 LOL , I love that!
Stop spreading this urban legend and just search CZcams for the full 6 and a half minute version. This was edited for VH1.
Om goodness! Yes!! When I was younger I called this the yodel song!!!
LOL, heck, I never knew it was called Hocus Pocus for a few years myself.
I am 65 and know this song very well but never seen the band ! It added so much being live !Thanks !
i was expecting it....just waiting to see your face when it happened!!
My Favorite Video To See People React To. All members of the band, give double excellent performances, and more.
I've loved this song, since I heard it in the mid 80's.
Thank You.
I always come away from listening to Hokus Pokus with a huge smile on my face. Incredibly uplifting and fun.
I love waiting for reactions to this song cuz I know what’s coming lol
No you are not prepared 😉😜. It gets weirder
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 BEST REACTION YET!!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was a teenager when this came out, so yeah, I knew and was waiting I your reaction 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I`m 62. I loved it in `73 i was 15 years old. Great times to grow up. Beatles, Stones, Zep, Doobies, Tull, Eagles, many many more!
I always knew the radio version of this, but at age 60, this is the first time I've seen this live performance. Mind blown! Jayvee, thanks for featuring this version. I'm as amazed by this performance as you were.
Big fan of you Jayvee. Many of your reactions you are calm, cool, collected -- almost poker face at times. I couldn't wait to see your reaction to this one, and yes, hilarity ensued big time! I was laughing and snorting so hard!!! Thanks for posting!
We had cool novelty songs like this and "Frankenstein", that really added some spice to life in the 70's.
I loved this song when I was little kid ... spent YEARS trying to learn the words. And by the way, none of these guys spoke much English at the time.
I’m sure they did!
Ik dacht dat alle Nederlanders Engels leerden vanaf hun allereerste school.
Ik bedoel, wie spreekt er nederlands? lol
@@Isleofskye LOL. I saw these guys on TV here in America once, the interview didn't go well, nobody could understand anyone else.
Ben Mobi May you have a point there. They were not used to practicing English. In that time you learned how to read and write it. And it was before television, so you didn’t hear it a lot. Interesting thing, last on a video channel a girl asked why is it that all Dutch speaks English. Now I know. The school spent more time with conversation, and you hear it on t.v. Thanks for this information.
I've seen a few of those! Cringe-worthy and it hurts because you're really rooting for those guys (haha).
So happy I'm a subscriber of yours because I have wondered about this song for years but had no idea how to Google it. Your reaction is a lot like mine when I first heard it. One of your best!
this band is responsible for some of the most beautiful music ever recorded...try Answers? Questions! Questions? Answers!
" Quote: Mr.Steve Harvey " , " A Man has got to be in his Right Mind ! " . 😂 For Sure Lol ! , When you listening to " Hocus Pocus " . 😎 song.
Jovaughn your reaction was priceless and I was right there with you because I never heard this song before and I was 13 at the time of this performance! You made me lmao!
It was one of those songs that grew on you. We only had a couple of radio stations to choose from so we listened to whatever was played... Rock, Country, R&B, etc. It's why we like so many different genre's.
I was sitting here with a smile on my face, waiting for your reaction.
The show wanted them to cut down the song, so instead, they just sped it up.
I have no thoughts on this song because they blew them straight outta my mind! 😂
I loved how you were so innocently sitting there having no idea what was about to come!!
Out of all the fast paced rock and heavy metal out there, I'm pretty sure nothing goes harder than this song.
It's great to see them having fun with this hit song of theirs' but.... This is a very serious and talented Prog Rock band from the early 70's , i have all their cd's.🤗
Oh thank you this will be priceless.
This song certainly calls to mind some mad wizard frenetically casting spells in an incredibly epic mages' battle.
Hocus Pocus!
I love watching people react to this video!!! 🤯
His name, Thijs, is pronounced "Tice". Focus still tours with him and original drummer, Pierre Van der Linden with some new blood on guitar and bass. And they still kick ass live!
Couldn't have asked for a better reaction! Hearing it and seeing it are totally different lol! Thank you!! Btw.. we never got high, lol! 💖💖💖
Thanks man for this reaction. You made me smile. Youre face on that first Yodel was priceless.
I bought the 45 for this song when it came out in 1973, but I had never seen this live performance until I started watching reaction videos on CZcams!
So much fun!! I love to watch people seeing this for the first time!
Listen to the studio version one time. Hell of a composition.
So I love this it’s a crazy wonderful song they didn’t want to leave anything out so they played it twice as fast.🤪🤪 I think it’s listening gold ❤️😃👍✌️🌼 Great reaction It always makes me laugh when someone hears this for the first time.😂🤣😂🤣
In the 60's and 70's you have everything to expect in music!
i new he was going to do that as i was listening to it in 1973 when i was 14 lol!
Love them Keep in shining your ever living light down on us
Back in the day it was like treat hearing them on the radio. We're I'm from they didn't get much radio play. Such a bad ass jam
'This is new and refreshing' Nearly 50 years old !
So pleased you enjoyed it
That was fun, talented and yes eccentric with some humorous gags thrown in. I read a comment that the lead guitarist was number 1 on a Top 100 list of guitarists around the time of this performance. I'm definitely impressed with his speed and sound.
Fantastic musicianship from all band members
YES THAT WAS HILLARIOUS! FANTASTIC BAND, THAT IS WHY YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE!!
Wild huh? Loved this as a kid!!
Haha! Love your reaction!
Thank you
This song made it into the US top 10 back in the day..It'a a dutch band with very skilled musicians. The band still exists today, however not with all the same bandmembers.
Focus is one of the best prog band in the early 70s. Try "Sylvia". "Focus II", "Focus III".
The thing to understand is that this song is an exploration of where an instrument can go and what it can do. Thjis’s instrument (besides the keyboard) is his head.
This guitarist is so damn good. I had the album
Some of your subscribers, got you watching EVERYTHING! I can't hang... Lol
Focus shows up & production say ‘It’s too long, find a way to shorten it., once your time is up, the lights are on’. Focus is rightly ticked so they huddle up & come up with a solution, they were nervous but saw potential-so they played it twice as fast! They used up that time perfectly, the house lights came on ASAP!
The person who introduced Focus in this video clip was none other than the great Gladys Knight, without her Pips.
Please hear their #2 smash (with her Pips) called Neither One Of Us Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye studio version. A #1 Soul hit as well.
The song by Focus/Hocus Pocus. was a one hit wonder from the early 70's. No other hits came from this group in the USA.
The studio version of the song is significantly slower tempo, but they were only given this long a slot to play so in order to play this (their most famous song) they had to play it a lot faster
Dude, in the early '70s Focus caught us all off guard.
You guys, this is not just music. It is spell casting. There is a picture these insane guys are painting here. And it is very coherent and understandable picture.
I’d forgotten how crazy this song is. Thanks for reacting!
Yes it's a famous CZcams video ✌😎
Don't forget the speed that they are playing ! They took about a minute off the studio recording because of the TV show ! That's not just a flute.... that's JAZZ FLUTE ! Anchorman 😉
I don’t remember this band or recognize the song and I’m old enough!
Your face when the yodeling started. 😄 you seriously thought for a moment you were being played. But no..it's real. 😉 This song used to give me the creeps when I was a kid. 😂😂
What a bizarre sound!! Lead vocals and band are very talented!
You had me laughing in tears..your reaction! LOL! #LOOKOUT
#HappiestReviews.
That is how you fit a 7 minute song into 4 minutes :)
You should listen to their album Moving Waves. Some very beautiful and relaxing music.
There former band,,,Brainbox,,,,the smile,,Scarborough fair,,,Down man etc etc etc
Focus is a tough band to get into as they like to jam for long periods of time but Hocus Pocus is a phenomenal song.
I love your enthusiasm young man. I have been watching you for a while and it makes my heart swell to see you enjoy so many different genres of music. May I make a suggestion from an old woman to a young man? I would like you to listen to scorpions the song winds of change.
Thank you for the reaction. This sure is a fun song.
Soon as I saw you were reacting to this I had to watch knowing what was coming and you didn't disappoint.
This music is a crazy quilt of solid sound!
I remember this song from my childhood but I never knew the name of the group or the song! Off I go to iTunes!
The look on your face Jay is priceless! LOL my friend
LOL 😂 Ya it was like that.😂🤣
Loved your reaction and kudos for keeping such an open mind. Focus and another band called Ekseption were the two main prog rock bands of the Netherlands and both very good. Jan Akkerman, the guitar player, was voted best guitar player of the world in 1973 by UK magazine Melody Maker and he is brilliant, technical wizard and his melodies are so different from what anyone else did before and since. Actually all four were extremely accomplished musicians.
Thijs van Leer is stil playing,he’s now 75 years old
1:16 "Is my man good?"
Oh yeah. He's real good.
Great reaction JAYVEE. Have a great Christmas.
Thanks. I have not heard this for years. Yes I like it. Prog rock, to me is the bees knees. It's deep.
The original is about 7 minutes long. I believe for this performance they only got about three and a half minute. Instead of breaking off the song halfway they decided to play a bit faster so they could still do the whole song.
You really should listen to the recorded version of this song. Right here on live TV
it sounds a little distorted because they’re playing fast and you really can’t make out the lick. It really is pretty cool.
Don't think they'd make it on American Idol nowadays if that were their audition song, LOL. Must say, they are talented though :)
How did I forget one of the greatest guitar solos, Peter Green
‘Tears in my Eyes’ live at the Marquee 1967.
Considering most of your viewers probably grew up with this song like I did, YES we were DEFINITELY expecting it.
This song screams don’t do drugs kids. Lol!!!
It was a weird song back in the 70s, I never forgot it.
It sounds extra weird at this tempo.
How many octave voice, 3 1/2? That one crooked front tooth of his came in handy for the super high not. That was some high speed guitar too.
This song was a big hit. More of a novelty song. How would one dance to it? By making believe they were being stung by a billion bees.
That was fun. I get a kick out of seeing the reactors get freaked out. This was a great freak out. Stay freaked my friends; stay freaked.
was a great forgotten band from the 70's
👍They used this track in the film Baby Driver (a film well worth watching)
Well done for staying on-screen whilst listening to this, your co You-Tuber was so shocked he walked off camera......
That's the funniest vocals I've ever heard, yodeling to rock and roll. Yes, let's it mix it up, followed by scat. Unexpected for sure.
Hold on ...hold on....caught me off guard too. But I loved this so much Don’t know how I missed this in my youth.
